Barunian Football League - Season 6

Champion's League
For the first time, the Barunian Football League has multiple divisions. With the introduction of the First Division, the six teams that made up the original BFL have been rebranded into the Champion's League.

Porthaven United
Porthaven is the capital city of Barunia, and this team's home ground is the largest in the country. Porthaven are a well-supported club with a long history. A powerful club, Porthaven is the home side of international star forward Victor Castolo. Since the Barunian Football League began, Porthaven have dominated, winning the last three championships.

Marion Hawks
The Hawks come from Marion, one of the states of Barunia, and their home field is in Edwardton, the state capital. A defensive side, the Hawks are well known for the quality of their defenders. Former international captain and sports personality Joric Ruskin captained the side. A club known for its loyal fans, the team has a long standing rivalry with Porthaven United, who have eliminated the Hawks in three league cup championships, including last year's grand final.

Tildos Ravens
The state of Tildos is the heart of Barunian football. The Ravens base themselves out of the state capital of Delmars, and represent the island of Tildos. The Ravens are the most successful club in Barunian history, and are well-respected and admired around the country, with fans spread across all four states. They have a friendly rivalry with fellow state team San Baptiste.

Tridents
This team comes from Porthaven state, north of the capital. The newest team to be included in the Champion's League, the Tridents made their debut in season four. Since then, they have had only moderate success. The big name for the Tridents is Pablo Zokora, an international squad member and striker. The Tridents have been plagued by a lack of fan support, struggling to lure Porthaven fans away from the hugely more successful Porthaven United.

San Baptiste Sea Lions
San Baptiste is an island in Tildos state, famed as being the home of the first Barunians. It is also the spiritual home of Barunian Football, with the sport intensely popular in the Northern Isles. Sea Lions fans are known for being extremely passionate, and whenever the team plays at their home ground at Northport, the stands are packed and crowds line the streets outside. This passion has not diminished despite the team's lack of success recently, having ended last year's season in last place.

1st Division
With the increasing popularity of football in the country, six amateur teams have been promoted to compete at a national level. These teams will form the 1st Division of the Barunian Football League.

Trinity Saints
West Bay Mariners
Delmars FC
Monte Sol Warriors
Newland FC
Edwardton Eagles

After draws all last week in the Champion's League, Round Two was an opportunity to assert some early dominance. The Ravens showed they had what it takes, downing the out-of-favour Sea Lions 2-1. The Orcas held on to an early lead to win against the Tridents, despite a late charge from the boys in black. The Marion Hawks, meanwhile, sent league champions Porthaven to the bottom of the ladder with a narrow win.

In the new 1st Division league, Monte Sol Warriors remain unbeaten at the top of the ladder, following a 1-0 win over second place Saints. Newland FC slotted themselves into third with a win in an exciting three-two nailbiter against West Bay. Neither the Eagles or Delmars FC could lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a win, having to be content with a draw.

Sailing Q&A
Q. How is Sailing scored?
A. Boats earn one point for coming in first, two points for second, three for third, and so on. At the end of the competition, lowest score wins. In multi-class races, the first boat to cross the line from each class will be awarded one point, followed by the second boat from each class, and so on.

MATCHDAY 3
Porthaven United 2-0 Western Orcas
Marion Hawks 1-0 San Baptiste Sea Lions
Tridents 0-1 Tildos Ravens

This week's matches saw the Tildos Ravens climb to the top of the leader board after a win over Tridents. International forward Fabrice Sagoro proved the difference for the ravens, scoring the game's only goal. Meanwhile, over in the capital fellow international Victor Castolo scored for Porthaven, putting the team back in competition along with teammate William Cootes. Cootes scored a late goal in the second half to cement United's first win of the season ad put them on top of the Orca's on the ladder.
And in Edwardton, new captain Jack White led by example, scoring for the Hawks to ensure a win over the Sea Lions. That loss sees the Lions once again at the bottom of the league and still looking for a win. With the Tridents joining them in the search for elusive victory, and three ties for points across the board, the Champion's League is set to fire up in the next couple of weeks.

Delmars FC 0-1 Trinity Saints
Edwardton Eagles 3-1 Newland FC
Monte Sol Warriors 1-2 West Bay Mariners

The First Division saw some high scoring matches this week, with the three winning teams jumping to the top of the leader board. Edwardton scored three goals to down Newland FC, although Newland did manage a late consolation goal. The Saints scraped a win off Delmars City, with a free kick the deciding factor in a very defensive game. Meanwhile on Tildos, a new rivalry was born when West Bay faced off against fellow statesmen Monte Sol. The Mariners made the most of it, winning two-one in a close match that is sure to fire up the two sides for their next meeting. With that win West Bay climb to the top of the leader board. The Saints are equal to them on points, propelled there by their win over Delmars. That win also saw Delmars drop to the bottom of the standings, the only First Division team yet to win a game.

Sailing

Round 2 of the Porthaven Regatta could not have been more different from the first, with prevailing easterly winds making work difficult for all crews. Class 40 yacht Magnum Opus took line honours after a gruelling race, with second-place Nigel's Ark the best of the X-41 class. Interestingly, the next two boats across the line, For Susie and Juanita, have now moved into first overall in their respective classes. The adverse conditions proved too much for the crew of Memoria, who was recorded as a DNF after capsizing. No one was hurt, and the craft will compete in the next round.

This week in the Champions league saw the Ravens and Hawks continue their dominance, both with one-nil wins over the Orcas and Tridents respectively. Porthaven were held to a goalless draw by San Baptiste, with special mention needing to go to Sam Garcia, whose work between the sticks for the Sea Lions proved vital against a strong Porthaven attack. With that draw, the Sea Lions move off the bottom of the table, although with just two points they'll need to get some wins if they want to stay in the competition.

Winds were light for round three of the Porthaven Regatta, with the larger boats making the most of the limited power. Only two Class 40 boats made it into the top 10, with Wild Roar winning the class race. Line honours and victory in the X-41 class went to Marcus Polo, skippered by John O'Connor. A surprise second was Roger That, who was disqualified in the first round and finished eleventh out of twelve in the second. Third in the X-41 class was For Susie, who is continuing to hold onto the top spot in the tournament with the best overall score.

MATCHDAY 5

San Baptiste Sea Lions 2-1 Tridents
Western Orcas 0-1 Marion Hawks

Delmars FC 1-1 West Bay Mariners
Newland FC 2-0 Monte Sol Warriors
Trinity Saints 1-1 Edwardton Eagles

This week, the Sea Lions continued their fight to break into the top half of the ladder, defeating the winless Tridents in a close 2-1 game. That puts the Sea Lions in fourth place, just two spots behind Porthaven United, who are still behind Tildos despite a two goal win over the Ravens at United Stadium. The Raven's loss sees the Hawks jump clear to first spot, after they defeated the Orcas by just one goal.

Delmars FC proved their win last week was not a one-off fluke, coming close this week to upsetting division favourites West Bay. Delmars scored early and held their defence, until a late corner from the Mariners was turned into a goal by star striker Yohan Marris. In a bottom-of-the-ladder battle, Newland FC climbed out of last place and sent their opponents there with a win over Monte Sol, while the Saints remain just one step ahead of Newland after a draw against the Eagles.

It was a close end to the season in the Champion's League, with just five points separating the top 5 teams. The Tridents finished their disappointing season on just 16 points, well outside contention range. But there were no surprises in the final three, with Porthaven, Marion, and Tildos claiming the spots. The Hawks put last season to bed, topping the league by just one point over arch rivals Porthaven.

In the First Division, the West Bay Mariners had started strongly, and continued to dominate, winning the inaugural First Division Trophy. They had to stave off some strong opposition from the Edwardton Eagles, who finished a point behind with just one less win. The Trinity Saints also had a good season, again just a point behind the Eagles to miss out on a spot at promotion to the Champion's League

Finals Cup Results

Semi Finals
Marion Hawks 2–1 Porthaven United
Tildos Ravens 1–0 Western Orcas

Grand Final
Finals Cup
Marion Hawks 2–1 Tildos Ravens

Finally, after 6 seasons, the Hawks claim the greatest prize in Barunian Football: The Finals Cup Trophy.

Edwardton Eels 7–1 Trinity Reds
Newland Bulls 0–0 Porthaven Piranhas

GAME 2
South Coast University 0–3 Porthaven Piranhas
Trinity Reds 1–5 Newland Bulls
Delmars City 0–2 Edwardton Eels

GAME 3

Porthaven Piranhas 1–1 Trinity Reds

GAME 4
South Coast University 1–1 Trinity Reds
Delmars City 1–1 Porthaven Piranhas
Edwardton Eels 1–0 Newland Bulls

GAME 5
Newland Bulls 2–0 South Coast University
Porthaven Piranhas 2–0 Edwardton Eels
Trinity Reds 2–1 Delmars City

National Field Hockey League Table - After 5 games
# National Field Hockey League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Edwardton Eels 5 4 0 1 13 3 +10 12
2 Porthaven Piranhas 5 2 3 0 7 2 +5 9
3 Newland Bulls 5 2 1 2 10 6 +4 7
4 Delmars City 5 2 1 2 8 8 0 7
5 Trinity Reds 5 1 2 2 6 15 −9 5
6 South Coast University 5 0 1 4 1 11 −10 1

Season 4 started as predicted, with the Eels off to a flying start. The Eels showed why they're the defending champions, handing Trinity a 7-1 thrashing in the opening game and continuing to dominate their opponents, only dropping a game in the fifth round to Porthaven. The Piranhas themselves have had a good start to the season, not losing a match in five games. With three draws though, they will be looking for more wins as the season progresses. The Bulls and City have equal points at the moment, and where equally matched when they met in round three. The teams clashed in one of the best matches so far, with the final score a 3-4 result that saw Delmars just get the better of the Bulls.
The inclusion of South Coast University to create a six team league may have backfired, with SCU's performance in the first five games bordering on a farce. Easy prey for the better teams, their only success so far has been a 1-all draw against low-order Trinity, the only time SCU has actually scored. After getting pasted by Edwardton, Trinity then had similar treatment from the Bulls in Game 2, before steadying the ship and managing two draws and a close-fought win against Delmars City.

8 Western Orcas 1 0 0 1 0 1 −1 0

In a thrilling start to the season, last year's Champions faced off against the newly promoted champions of the Professional League. It was a tough defensive game, and neither the Hawks or the Mariners could find a goal, ending the game all square at nil-all. Across the city at the Hawk's old ground, the Edwardton Eagle faced off against the Ravens, who proved too strong, scoring two in the first half and then holding off a late charge in the second to seal the match. Porthaven couldn't find the same luck against the Tridents, with a late goal from Zokora robbing them of the first win of the season, while the Sea Lions were able to celebrate after defeating the Orcas.

7 Sheppardton Sharks 1 0 0 1 0 2 −2 0
8 Woodborough Athletic 1 0 0 1 0 4 −4 0

It was bad news for the four teams that come up into the professional league for this season, with three out of four posting losses. Only Haven City managed to save themselves by preventing the Saints from scoring to end their ninety minutes nil-all. Delmars FC made the best of it, jumping to the top of the ladder after hammering Woodborough by four goals.

7 Albatross FC 1 0 0 1 0 6 −6 0
8 Woodvale Wolves 1 0 0 1 1 9 −8 0

If the top leagues don;t provide enough goals to your liking, then perhaps you'll find yourself in better company in the NFL. The Mountaineers and Bluebirds kept things fairly low-key with one-nil wins over Appleburgh and Coral island, but Monkswood showed no such modesty, slaughtering Albatross FC six goals to nothing. In a one sided match, Monkswood took 83% of the possession and had 27 shots at goal in a match that looked more like a training scrap than a professional game. Albatross will need to lift their game a lot over the season. But even their defeat was overshadowed by the Woodvale Wolves, who were steamrolled by Babbage Town. The Wolves scored in the 38th minute, but it was their only goal and by that time Babbage Town had scored five. They continued to dominate, putting another four on the board in the second half to record the highest scoring game in BFL history.

National Football League Two
Rio Verde Vampires 1–1 Docklands Stevedores
Port Newland Destroyers 2–2 Secret Valley AFC

Rio Verde Vampires 1 0 1 0 1 1 0 1
8 Marion Coast Miners 1 0 0 1 0 4 −4 0

The first matchday of the second tier of the National Football League couldn't live up to the excitement of the first, with three draws. Barrett's Ridge Rangers did manage to spark some interest with a four-nil thrashing of the Miners, while Port Newland came close to breaking their deadlock with Secret Valley when they were handed a penalty, but striker Andrew Newheart sent the ball into the woodwork instead of the net.

Results - Matchday 2
Champion's League
Tildos Ravens 0–3 Porthaven United
San Baptiste Sea Lions 0–1 Northern Tridents
West Bay Mariners 1–2 Western Orcas
Edwardton Eagles 0–2 Marion Hawks

# Champion's League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Porthaven United 2 1 1 0 4 1 +3 4

7 West Bay Mariners 2 0 1 1 1 2 −1 1
8 Edwardton Eagles 2 0 0 2 1 4 −3 0

Porthaven found firmer ground this week, with a hat trick from Castolo and solid defending ensuring a win over the Tildos Ravens. The Sea Lions weren't so fortunate, dropping down the table with a loss to the Tridents, while a goal from Johan Marris was not enough to save West Bay, who went down 2-1 to the Orcas. However the big game of this week was the first Champion's League derby, when the Edwardton Eagles hosted fellow local team the Marion Hawks. Playing with their trademark 5-4-1 formation, the Hawk's solid defensive wall proved too much for the Eagles, who couldn't penetrate. At the other end of the pitch Marion Captain Jack White was on fire, scoring two brilliant goals to give the reigning champion their first derby win.

Professional League
Woodborough Athletic 0–0 North Islands Nightjars
Sheppardton Sharks 1–3 Newland FC
Trinity Saints 0–2 Monte Sol Warriors
Delmars FC 1–1 Haven City

# Professional League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts

7 Woodborough Athletic 2 0 1 1 0 4 −4 1
8 Sheppardton Sharks 2 0 0 2 1 5 −4 0

The new teams are still struggling in the professional league, although Haven City is showing promising signs, with another draw this week, this time against Delmars FC. The Sharks meanwhile scored their first professional goal, coming from midfielder Bryce Vaughn. It was not enough for the win however, as Newland FC put three into the net in reply. Woodborough faced off against fellow newcomers the Nightjars, the match ending without a goal from either side. The Saints continue their dismal form, losing to the Monte Sol Warriors.

National Football League One
Woodvale Wolves 1–0 Monkswood AFC
Coral Cougars 1–7 Albatross FC
Mountaineers 0–1 Southern Bluebirds
Babbage Town 0–1 Appleburgh Tigers

# National Football League One Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Southern Bluebirds 2 2 0 0 2 0 +2 6

7 Woodvale Wolves 2 1 0 1 2 9 −7 3
8 Coral Cougars 2 0 0 2 1 8 −7 0

The Southern Bluebirds jump to the top of the league this week, remaining unbeaten after a 1-0 win over the Mountaineers. After being slaughtered by Babbage Town last week, Woodvale came back to steal a win from Monkswood, while Babbage Town had to be content with a loss after Appleburgh were given a penalty to seal the match. The stand out match was between the Coral Cougars and Albatross FC, who looked like they were trying to recreate last week's big match. Albatross managed two goals in twenty minutes against a poor Cougars defence, before the home side got one back shortly after. Any chance of a come back was quickly snuffed out by Albatross though, as they ran away with the possession and tore apart the Cougars backline. Coral's keeper fought valiantly, but often he was facing two or three attackers on his own, and Albatross ran rings around him to score another five goals before the final whistle.

National Football League Two
Docklands Stevedores 0–2 Archer United
Marion Coast Miners 0–2 Hillside Wanderers
Secret Valley AFC 0–0 Barrett's Ridge Rangers
Rio Verde Vampires 4–1 Port Newland Destroyers

# National Football League Two Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Barrett's Ridge Rangers 2 1 1 0 4 0 +4 4

7 Port Newland Destroyers 2 0 1 1 3 6 −3 1
8 Marion Coast Miners 2 0 0 2 0 6 −6 0

The points are spread evenly out in the NFL Two at the moment, with four teams on four points. Three of those teams had wins this week, with both Archer and Hillside having two-nil wins, against Docklands and Miners respectively. Rio Verde had the better of it, defeating the Destroyers four-one, while Barrett's Ridge are looking less comfortable in first place after a goalless draw against Secret Valley.

Results - Matchday Three
Champion's League
Marion Hawks 0–0 Tildos Ravens
Western Orcas 0–1 Edwardton Eagles
Northern Tridents 1–4 West Bay Mariners
Porthaven United 0–1 San Baptiste Sea Lions

# Champion's League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts

7 Western Orcas 3 1 0 2 2 3 −1 3
8 Edwardton Eagles 3 1 0 2 2 4 −2 3

Last week the Sea Lions were looking decidedly shaky against the Tridents. This week San Baptiste proved they have what it takes, climbing into top spot with a win over Porthaven. Captain and veteran defender Andre Lopez was a stand-out at the back, stopping United's attacks dead. The Hawks also defended well, but couldn't put a score of their own on the board against the Ravens, the game ending in a nil-all draw. Newcomers West Bay showed they could be contenders for the Championship with a four-one thrashing over the Tridents, while the Eagles remain on the bottom of the ladder, dragging the Orcas down with them after a narrow victory.

Professional League
Haven City 2–2 Woodborough Athletic
Monte Sol Warriors 1–0 Delmars FC

North Islands Nightjars 0–1 Sheppardton Sharks

# Professional League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts

7 Woodborough Athletic 3 0 2 1 2 6 −4 2
8 North Islands Nightjars 3 0 1 2 0 2 −2 1

This week in the Professional League Haven City remain firmly in the middl of the table after a third-straight draw, this time 2-all against Woodborough Athletic. The Nightjars are still looking for a win after losing to the Sharks, while Monte Sol continue to dominate the group by winning their third match in a row, defeating Delmars by one goal. The surprise for this week however was undoubtedly Trinity Saints, who scored a remarkable 5-1 upset over Newland FC. After poor performances in the last two games, Trinity came out blazing in this third match, scoring three without reply in the first half. Newland managed a consolation goal in the second, but Trinity scored twice more to put the game beyond doubt.

National Football League One
Appleburgh Tigers 3–1 Woodvale Wolves
Southern Bluebirds 0–0 Babbage Town
Albatross FC 0–4 Mountaineers
Monkswood AFC 4–5 Coral Cougars

# National Football League One Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Southern Bluebirds 3 2 1 0 2 0 +2 7
2 Mountaineers 3 2 0 1 5 1 +4 6
3 Appleburgh Tigers 3 2 0 1 4 2 +2 6

7 Coral Cougars 3 1 0 2 6 12 −6 3
8 Woodvale Wolves 3 1 0 2 3 12 −9 3

The remarkable thing about the NFL is how quickly a team's fortunes can change. After hammering the Wolves nine-one in the opening match, Babbage Town has yet to score another goal, this week sharing a scoreless draw with top team the Southern Bluebirds. And Albatross FC, who had seven goals last week, were this week defeated by the Mountaineers four goals to nothing. The Wolves are remaining consistently poor at the moment, returning to the bottom of the ladder with a loss to Appleburgh. However, the big game for this week was between Monkswood AFC and the Coral Cougars, both of whom have been fairly inconsistent. In one of the most closely fought matches in Barunian football history, the teams clashed in a titanic struggle that saw nine goals, six yellow cards, and a serious injury to Cougars player Lance Woodward. In one of the most thrilling matches so far, both sides had scored four goals in regulation time. In the ninety-third minute Cougars substitute Hernandez struck the ball in the top corner to claim a shock win.

National Football League Two
Port Newland Destroyers 3–0 Docklands Stevedores
Barrett's Ridge Rangers 5–1 Rio Verde Vampires

7 Docklands Stevedores 3 0 1 2 1 6 −5 1
8 Marion Coast Miners 3 0 0 3 0 7 −7 0

In the third week of competition, Archer United move up to join Barrett's Ridge at the top of the table, after a win over Marion Coast, who are yet to score a point. The Rangers showed why they're at the top of the table, dominating the Vampires with a 5-1 victory, while the Destroyers dispatched the Stevedores in similar fashion. Over in the capital the Hillside Wanderers couldn't gain any purchase over Secret Vally, drawing their match nil-all.

Football - Community Cup

With the addition of the National Football League, the BFA introduced a mid season, cross-tier knockout tournament. By combining the two tiers of the NFL, a field of sixteen teams is created. Randomly drawn against each other, the teams will play a home-and-away elimination, with the top eight going through to the next round. There they will be randomly drawn against a Professional League team. The winners will go through to be randomly drawn against a Champion's League team, and from there it proceeds to a straight knockout tournament.

National Field Hockey League Table - After 10 games
# National Field Hockey League Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
1 Edwardton Eels 10 7 0 3 22 10 +12 21
2 Newland Bulls 10 5 2 3 25 18 +7 17
3 Porthaven Piranhas 10 4 4 2 18 8 +10 16
4 Delmars City 10 4 3 3 20 16 +4 15
5 Trinity Reds 10 4 2 4 15 22 −7 14
6 South Coast University 10 0 1 9 4 30 −26 1

Match day 6 saw a few surprises, with the Eels losing to low placed Trinity, while Porthaven went down to the Bulls. The Bulls have climbed into second place in the rankings despite a loss to Trinity and draw against Delmars. That rise was helped by a close win over the Eels in what proved to be a showstopper of a match. But although the Bulls may be in second, that position is precarious. The Piranhas are only a point behind on 16, and with Delmars on 15 and Trinity on 14, the last five games of the season will be interesting to say the least.

In a surprise start to game eleven, South Coast managed their first win over an out of form Delmars City. City would come back in game twelve to defeat Edwardton two-nil. But it wasn't enough to stop the reigning champions, who powered home with three straight wins to close out the season by six points and earn themselves a third NFH Trophy.

Th Newland Bulls were worthy second place winners. The decisive match for them was in game eleven, when they faced the Piranhas. With only one point separating them, it was a game both teams fought to win, with the Bulls managing to come out on top by a single goal, leaving the Piranhas to finish the season in third. Delmars made it into 4th after defeating trinity two-one in game fifteen to give them the three points they needed. No surprises that South Coast are in sixth place, finishing the season with a record number of losses and the lowest ever NFHL score of just four points for the season.
