Something fishy here

Postby Imsogone » Thu Feb 21, 2013 2:32 pm

So the fish we're eating aren't what we've been told they are. Indeed, one type of fish, the escolar, which has made it to many of our tables under false pretenses, can make us sick.

Now I understand that many of you don't like fish, but I love me some seafood - shrimp, lobster, crab, tuna, salmon, clams - you name it. I've chosen to stop eating some of my favorites because they've become endangered - like abalone. Others I won't eat because of heavy metal and toxin issues. But I would at least like to know that when I do eat fish, it's what the label says it is.

I've already pretty much eliminated beef and bison from my diet because I can't be sure of the source or even if it is beef or bison. I've cut down on chicken because I prefer free-range - it tastes better and the bird is actually healthier than factory farmed, but it costs a lot more.

I'm almost ready to turn vegetarian rather than to have to continue to fret about where the meat is coming from, how it's raised and in many cases, what it is. Almost - still have to have my bacon fix.

Are any of you ready to change your eating habits for health/environmental concerns? Have you already? Or are you a committed carnivore?

I just like meat. I dont care what it is as long as i'm told the truth. Even then, I often don't care.

If you worry about where you're meat comes from, then go hunting. You want fresh meat, imagine venison that was running in a field less than a day before.

The fish from the article is still fish, right? It is just that the species is mislabeled? If so, I don't mind that very much. So long as there are strict quotas which are enforced to ensure that certain species of fish don't become endangered or extinct from overfishing.

Wendy's has a lot of gall to dare to advertise its fish as Pacific Cod.

That's just a fiction; Cod is Atlantic. this stuff is merely greyfish, and the taste is inferior.

At least they're not substituting pollock, which is even worse.

personally i love tilapia. i also love raw cow. i also love the several varieties of tuna that go into real sushi. and yes, i even eat that stuff that ends up in cans.
i also eat chicken and turkey, and probably more meat then vegies, along with more pasta then either potatoes or bread.
i also eat my own cooking more then anyone else's. pacific fisheries have a problem with mercury, because of its having been used as an amalgum during the gold mining era and as a result its having become metabolized by certain mosses that find their way into the aquatic food chain.

so its undertandable that atlantic or other worlds ocians varieties would get mislabled as pacific for advertising purposes. not an excuse i accept for doing so. merely one i can understand.

tilapia tend to be "farm" raised, as would the frankinsalmon, which, while edible, may pose a potential threat to other fisheries.
truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

adulterated beef, adulterated fish... Is there anything corporations won't adulterate to make extra money? If there was a way to adulterate vegetables they'd do that too much to the surprise of smug vegans.

I have changed my eating habits for health and environtmental reasons. While I do not particularly care about an animals well being (the whole reason that they're alive at all is because they're tasty) but because of energy conservation reasons. 1 kg of meat is several kilograms of veggies. I can better eat the veggies. They're even healthier too.

I fucking love escolar, especially as sashimi. I just wish it would stop being labelled as white tuna.
Hell, if I wanted to, I could go out a couple of nights from now and try to catch escolar(although with night fishing, you really have no idea of what you'll catch. Gotta love vertical migration and all that).
Tasty fish. Don't really care about possible health concerns because I don't eat it often, and even when I do, I don't get the issues that some people get.

However, back to relevancy, the mislabeling of fish needs to end. I can't tell you how many times I've walked into a grocery store and looked at the "red snapper" only to see the eyes of a lane snapper staring back at me(Yes, I know my fish rather well). Same goes for their yellowtail snapper, which usually is mangrove snapper. One time, I even saw a mutton snapper mislabeled as a red snapper. That's a pretty extreme difference.
