Recommend me some music!

Postby Bewilder » Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:21 am

Sometime ago, I emerged from under my classical music rock and discovered Pink Floyd. I made a thread on jolt asking for help in discovering more great music and some of you were very enlightening and recommended stuff I wouldn't have found on my own. Sadly, I can't access that thread any more but I'm still exploring the vast world of non-classical music that I've somehow managed to miss until recently so here I am again, this time following up on some great guitar solos I've heard from people like Slash and Jimi Hendrix.

So NSG, what do you recommend?

and thanks in advance :)

Jobim's Stone Flower, Wave and Urubu albums.
Baden Powell's Baden Live a Bruxelles

Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell

If it is guitar solos I would recommend Maggot Brain from Funkadelic

Also if you haven't listened to the Stone Roses first album give that a go.

....and this has the most sublime bit of soprano sax playing on it - one of those shivers down the spine moments for me - probably not to everybodies taste though

You should also check out www.pandora.com. Once you sign up - and the basic service is free - you tell it what you like (guitar solos, electric guitar, maybe a few artists you know you like) and it will pull up pieces that match the criteria. You can refine it as you go along, of course, add new artists to your list, create playlists, share them. It's pretty cool.

I've been getting into Static-X recently, you could try: Start a War, Just in Case, The Enemy or I'm the One.

Other than that, for solos pretty much any decent metal or heavy metal band will have them. You could try bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC etc for some good ones.

I personally am a big fan of mashups/created duets. These two are pretty amusing.

Walking in Memphis (Cher & Marc Cohn)
Policy of Sweet Dreams (Depeche Mode + Eurythmics)

You won't find the typical blistering solos you might be looking for, but if you want to hear some excellent guitar composition, I would recommend Built to Spill's albums There Is Nothing Wrong With Love and Perfect From Now On, or Television's album Marquee Moon.

If you listen to Never Gonna Give You Up, its really good. Ignore the music video, or the Rick Rolling. He sings well, it has a nice tune.

I have multiple puppets here; only a select few are used to represent the continent of Astholm; others used represent Westholme, and do not artificially boost my nation's statistics.Previously i used puppets with nation names that did not identify as Astholm (e.g. Australis Australia; now all new puppets use ASTHLM, NORTHLM, SOUTHLM, WESTHLM (HLM denoting The Holmes.
NOTE: Other uses of Astholm here have a different continuity and refer to work created by the user Astholm, not the nation
