Has the NRA lost its way?

Postby 7 Deadly Sins » Tue Jan 22, 2013 2:15 pm

I know this may be a touchy subject but I've been seeing forums from all over saying that some people think that the NRA has lost it's way, has become too big, too rich, and/or too corrupt. I may not be an NRA member but want to know about your honest opinion. Has the NRA really lost its way?

Rather than requiring people who play violent video games to carry guns? I guess so... ;)

Considering the shift in leadership, and subsequently priorities, back in the 1980s or late 1970s I'd say they've left their original mission of gun safety far in the dust of money and cash.

All my life the NRA has been nothing but a lobbying force for the gun industry, so if they've lost their way, it's not a recent thing.

It's kinda mixed. It promotes Guns, but not violent video games. It is mixed with it's "Freedom".

I don't see that many NRA sponsored safety courses offered in schools any more. I'd say yes.

Here's what I love about humanity:

The NRA is openly arguing that the solution to rampant gun violence is to increase the number of guns, and that the reason so many students are getting shot is because there aren't enough people carrying guns in school...

...and people are asking if the NRA has lost its way.

The first time I heard of the NRA was in the book Jennifer Government, so I keep imagining a military.

I think their delaying tactis were correctly use, poeple were gunning for "Assault weapons" and extended magazines after sandyhook.

turns out Adam lanza did not use the assault weapon instead he used four hand guns with regular sized magazines.

Things like the assault weapons ban are ideas people propose when they are emotional and have not taken the time to fully gather the facts.

Or, more people you thought were killed by assault weapons were really killed by pistols.

The original purpose of the NRA was to defend the second amendment right to bear arms, so they definitely have not lost their way.

Having guns in the right hands doesn't prevent guns getting into the wrong hands, that's why regulation is needed and that's what the NRA has consistently opposed.

Regular sized magazine? Do you mean the full capacity ones, or the limited, 10 round ones?

I'd say yes, it values people's rights to own a gun over those lives that continue to be lost by those same weapons.

Honestly, it seems to me that they let their earlier focus on safety (covering the responsibility half of the right to bear arms) slip away.

I disagree. After the introduction of post-Port Arthur gun regulations in Australia, gun crime plummeted.
That is why we need more in the right hands.

So you want to minimize the death toll rather than work to reduce the risk of occurence?

The US has experienced more school shootings in the last three years than Europe, Canada, Asia and South American combined have since 2000. The US seems to be the only place in the world where such events are prolific.
