Postby Reichsland » Tue Dec 18, 2012 9:09 pm

What are your views on higher taxes for the rich? In my oppinion, it is a rather bad idea. However, who cares, because I asked you about yours.

I think that if the rich get payed more, often for some frivolous activities, the least they can do is help the area benefit by taxes, so I'm for for taxes based on income.

Progressive taxation is the way to go. I'm also guessing that you are asking about the situation in America, since that is where most of such discussions on this forum are centered around, and I will add that Clinton Era tax levels seem to have been very, very successful.

The idea behind low taxes on the rich is that its supposed to push them to invest more in the economy, resulting in more jobs and higher economic growth.

Many many companies have seen record profits in the last year, and yet jobs in the US are not growing. Giving the rich more money obviously did nothing to help America at large, so...

Raise their taxes. If they won't give back for the benefits we've given them, they shouldn't get them. Raise taxes back to the Clinton Era.

My opinion is that there is nothing wrong with asking them to pay more, so long as it is within reason of course...
The Imperial Republic of Amehstris elects an Imperial High Council, the high council then elects a High Emperor, whom will serve as the head of state/head of government until their death, or if they betray the nation. The Prince-Elect means the likely favourite candidate to run for the throne during the next electoral stage.

You have to remember that a flat rate would still result in the rich paying more money - and you must also remember that many rich people started off with very little, and had to work their way up to the top. Higher taxes for the rich make people associate working hard and becoming rich with negative consequences. Therefore, although it is quite easy to sit back and say "They have money, so let them pay more,", it is much better to have a flat rate and encourage people to work hard in order to become rich.

Yes Tax the rich

it is the middle classes who power the economic cycle as both producers and consumers, therefore it is better to leave money with the middle class consumers.

money left with the rich becomes a burden as it sits as savings or is spent on one-off luxuries. Even trickle-down investment is only viable if the middle class consumers are willing to purchase the increased supply.

Then we should go to the Clinton Era spending levels. An entire Clinton budget could now fit into one of Obama's yearly deficits.

People want to raise taxes on the rich? How about we get everyone paying them first? Many don't (who are not poor).

Nope. Taxing the job creators will create nothing but poverty and unemployement. Income and capital gains taxes should be abolished anyway and replaced with a FairTax system.

I believe in raising them only and I stress only if they pay a lower tax rate (meaning flat, not including deductions and whatnot) than people making less than them. They should pay equal taxes. The danger with taxing the rich a ton like many people keep calling for is that they get sick and tired of being hated and taxed. Several big names in the USA have given up their citizenship so they do not have to pay taxes. In France where a new 75% tax rate on the rich has been enacted (not including property taxes, bills, etc.) several rich Frenchmen and women are moving, they are selling their houses and moving their place of residence not far from the French border so they can pay lower taxes. French people are willingly giving up their citizenship to avoid paying these taxes. Ultimately we have a spending problem, not a revenue problem, if we balanced the budget before then we can do it again.

Increase the sales tax on big purchases instead of raising income tax. That way, when rich people make big purchases, the money still goes back into the community, and it's not as outright theft as income tax.

Basically, this is the consumption tax, used by Singapore (where ever 1 in 6 households has over 1 million $USD in wealth). It's also used by Canada and Australia.

However, be sure to distinguish the consumption tax from the excise tax.

Consumption tax = good
Excises taxes = bad, and part of why America rebelled.
