UN tells Israel to let in nuclear inspectors

Postby Al-Faisal » Tue Dec 04, 2012 10:55 am

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/dec/04/un-tells-israel-nuclear-inspectors

The UN general assembly has overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling on Israel to open its nuclear programme for inspection.
The resolution, approved by a vote of 174 to six with six abstentions, calls on Israel to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) "without further delay" and open its nuclear facilities to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Those voting against were Israel, the US, Canada, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau.
Resolutions adopted by the 193-member general assembly are not legally binding but they do reflect world opinion and carry moral and political weight. And the resolution adds to pressure on Israel as it faces criticism over plans to increase settlement in the West Bank, a move seen as retaliation for the assembly recognising Palestinian statehood.

Israel refuses to confirm or deny possessing nuclear bombs though it is widely believed to have them. It has refused to join the non-proliferation treaty along with three nuclear weapon states: India, Pakistan and North Korea.

I think this is a good move. Israel wants Iran to follow NPT, then it should do so itself. I find it hard to believe anyone could be opposed to this. I know Israel will ignore it, like they do most of the time with the UN unless it's over something they want, but it is good the world is critical of Israel and is watching.

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

I don't mind them being asked to prove once and for all whether or not they have nuclear weapons. However, I see nonreason for them to join the NPT if they don't want to.

While I am certain many posters here support Israel's right to exist, I am also certain most of those same posters would agree Israel needs to be open with their nuclear program if they expect Iran to be.

Israel doesnt have nuclear weapons. What are they high? Just because we participated in that joint-test with South Africa, doesnt mean we have them. *sarcasm*

Posters here might take that tack, Americans in general won't.

They should do it, but not because the UN says so.

Americans tend to be fed their news in strange portions. Are any of their major news corporations even carrying the story? I find Fox News is.

No clue, I don't watch TV beyond a couple hours a week. I certainly don't watch what passes for news.

BBC's website has nothing, nor does CNN. I don't see the story on Al Jazeera either.

It would be interesting to have the No voters explain their reasoning.

As I former US military member... I think Israel should join the NPT. And I don't think we need to bomb Iran. I'm certain ISrael will refuse, of couse... this has nothing to do with my opinion.... merely an educated guess based on past experience with watching the stuff Israel does.

Yup.
Then again, Israel never signed the NPT so it's not binding for them. Bit rich for a country to request that other countries abide by a country they didn't sign themselves, though.

Iran SIGNED the NPT. It is not just Israel that expects Iran to follow a treaty it agreed. Israel, however, like India and Pakistan, never joined, and is not bound by it.

Why? They want those who signed it to follow what it says. India wants the same thing with Iran, and India isnt a signatory. Is it hypocritical for them to say that?

The UN and its gang of anti-semitic dictators and other scum can go fuck themselves. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, and to defend itself it needs to have a wide arsenal of different weapons that mustn't be revealed to the outside world.

If they do not have nuclear weaponry they therefore do not have anything to worry about, the UN should be allowed to send inspectors into Israel.

If they think it's a good treaty, why don't they sign it themselves?
And I didn't say "hypocritical".

Including Finland and America, I guess, which, being UN members, are part of the gang of anti-semitic dictatorships. Right?

1) What does being a democracy have to do with nuclear safety?
2) If you honestly think Israel need nukes to defend its nation, is purely asinine and truely wrong.

No. Expecting any state to comply with any treaty it is not a party to is stupid. Expecting a state which is a party to a treaty to comply with its obligations is not.

http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article13764.html This is why. If you sign the NPT then you must adhere by it. Thats what India is telling Iran. Its not saying its a good treaty, but if you signed. You have to follow it.

You have no idea what the point of having nukes is, do you? They're mainly as a deterrent. If the other country can obliterate you without landing a single soldier on your shores, you are not going to attack them, because that is fucking suicide. If a country doesn't prove it has nukes, then the value as a deterrent is gone.

And with Israel, its basically a policy of "guess and find out"
