This should be in General, really.
Anyway, I'm a Catholic, and I personally believe that you don't have to ask other people which religion is the right one: you need to choose yourself. Anyone can say that their religion (or lack of) is right, but it's up to you what you want to believe. If you want to stay a Baptist, be a Baptist. If you want to be an atheist, be an atheist. It's up to you.

I'm a 16 year old Methodist in a predominantly athiest community, so here's my two cents.

There is no proof of a deity's existance, or proof of a deity not existing.
That is why religion is called faith.

There are allot of anti-thiests around here who will practically try to convert you to being an athiest, all you have to remember is that, unless you're a biblical literalist, they really have no high point were they can say "There is no God" with scientific facts to back them up. They act on faith just as much as theists do.

I'm an outspoken atheist, and i will not claim that my position is the right one as it is not really a claim in itself but rather the skeptic response of a claim.

I can however give my reason of why i am an atheist and that reason is simple, because when someone makes a claim they will have to carry the burden of proof and present me with valid verifiable evidence that exceeds it from merely being a hypothesis. If a claim fails to do that than i have no reason to believe in said claim.

The same can be applied to religion which is why i am an atheist, i will however not claim that someone's religion is not real and respect people's reasoning to have one as long as they respect mine aswell.

That is a horribly ambiguous definition.

Atheism is the lack of belief in God. It cannot be a collection of beliefs.

It's heartwarming to see a message like this; this was a stage I was going through 5 years ago too, trying out different religions to see if I feel comfortable in them. That was because I was looking for a meaning in life and thought that religion would have the answers. There is such a staggering range of religions, with hundreds of major ones listed here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religions_and_spiritual_traditions), and probably tens of thousands of minor ones that are less well-known. It's impossible to try them all, needless to say. It would be like a lottery such that if there was a "real" religion as you say, statistically speaking I would be almost certain to not find that religion. Maybe it was out there and no one's ever encountered it ever.

Nevertheless I tried some because I thought finding the "right" one would more than make up for it, and tried, and tried, and in the end I stopped at Catholicism, to be specific, because the Bible contradicted with itself way too much, but in general, because I realized that religion directly conflicted with the core of who I am, and that justice does not exist in this world. Especially seeing that more than 1 in every 10 babies die in some parts of the world through no fault of their parents except for being poor, I was convinced that there is no way for there to be a universal balancing beam that ensures that justice is balanced across everyone everywhere in the world. For the baby and the parents had the odds stacked against them, regardless of how I had hoped that justice and fairness existed in the world. This fact struck me cruelly, and I took a step back from all my dreamy assumptions of the world, reset things I thought I knew back to zero, and started to trust only things that could be proven for near certainty, instead of needing to be believed in. I realized that it was infinitely more fulfilling now that everything I do is for my family, friends and society around me right now, living to improve the world I currently live in, living for the present life I have, which most probably is the only life I have, instead of trying to live for the future life, which most probably doesn't exist (or the past life - if you think about the afterlife, have you thought about if a beforelife exists too?). Actually, the afterlife certainly doesn't exist as we know from experiments in neuroscience too.

My life immediately became much happier when it appeared to me that it was most "right" for me to lack any belief in any religion, as my worldview now fits almost completely with the reality of the world as we know it (aspects of it that we know for sure and have proof for). So, I am now an ignostic, and with respect to specific conceptions of gods, I have been gnostically atheist thus far because the conceptions that I have come across or that people have described to me have so far all contradicted with reality as we know it.

Hope this helps. Sorry that my thinking was so naive in the past :P

Well, avoiding the whole theological debate (I'm an atheist), you can't really prove whether God(s) exist or not. You can prove that specific holy books aren't right, but beyond that, nada. You can prove the universe doesn't need a god to function, but you can't preclude the possibility.

The existence of supernatural phenomena is, by definition, unable to be studied scientifically or considered rationally. As prior posters have said, religious faith is faith for a reason.

There's not strictly any sort of proof, but there are two types of information which can inform your beliefs with regards to the Christian god specifically:

1. The Bible, 'God's Word', is riddled with contradictions and is an utterly unreliable source of information. Even priests and other religious officials ignore many of its teachings - not to eat shellfish is probably the most common example. That teaching was in the Old Testament, of course, so it's supposedly not relevant now - but since God is perfect, you wouldn't expect that his teachings would change over time. It's impossible to reconcile these things.

2. Scientific thought is reliant on the principle of Occam's razor, which states that - when faced with many possibilities as to what may be true - the most likely possibility is the one which makes the fewest assumptions. The universal model which makes the fewest assumptions is the irreligious one. This doesn't mean that there's definitely no God, of course, but all else being equal, it means his existence is extremely unlikely.

I am an Asatru (Norse Heathen) and since we believe that everything is for the most part an endless cycle I have come to a thought about things like dejavu or dreams that happen later. It could be that what is happening now has already happened in the last cycle and our spirit is remembering it since dreams are supposedly the mind rearranging memories. But you can believe what you want.
