What the hell, Texas?!

Postby Page » Tue Sep 25, 2012 10:48 pm

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... story.html

My first reaction to reading this article was "assaulting students is still legal in schools in America?!" And no I am not an indignant European, I am actually from Florida and never heard of this shit. And no, in case you were about to ask, this does not involve private schools. These are the public schools funded by taxpayers.

Now I think it's pretty fucking revolting for men to attack male students or women hitting female students, but a Texas district has now ruled that administrators can now beat students of the opposite sex, what the hell?

For a state whose politics are mostly ruled by conservatives who warn us of our impending doom if the Muslims win and impose Sharia on all of us, I sure am perplexed by them imposing policies that would earn a thumbs up from the Taliban.

She *literally* chose to take a spanking instead of serving whatever her other sentence would've been.

If I were a student in a high school and they said they wanted to hit me with a paddle, I'd tell them to go fuck themselves, consequences be damned. But these kids grow up in a culture of fear and submission and I wouldn't blame them for their learned helplessness.

If someone tried to paddle me, and I was in high school, I know I would have swung back. They don't even ask the consent of the kids, just the parent.

She told them she'd rather be paddled then face other consequences.

I mean, seriously:

CNN wrote:Springtown High School sophomore Taylor Santos requested corporal punishment because she didn't want to return to in-school suspension, a punishment she said she received when a classmate cheated off her, CNN affiliate WFAA reported. Her mother agreed because it was Taylor's preference, but expected her daughter to be hit by a woman: A district policy says corporal punishment should only be administered by people the same sex as the student. Although a woman was in the room, a man hit her, leaving red marks and welts that lasted for days, Taylor and her mother said.

They asked for corporal punishment.

They got corporal punishment.

Now suddenly they don't like corporal punishment?!

Mommy doesn't come out as exceptionally bright, either. Must have been the spankings: that's what happens when the organ one uses to think gets hit repeatedly.

OP link wrote:Cathi Watt, whose daughter was one of the two girls recently paddled, said Tuesday that she’s OK with paddlings in schools “because they need it once in a while, and I got them when I was a kid.” But she said the male administrator used too much force, so she does not support the new policy.
Watt said her 16-year-old daughter, Jada, deserved to be spanked after she spoke sarcastically to a teacher and an assistant principal, “but she did not deserve to be bruised.”
“And what kind of message does it send these boys?” Watt said. “Is it telling them that it’s OK to hit a girl?”

Meh. Pales in comparison to Massachusetts, where the state can force autistic children into a special (semi-?)private school straight out of the era when mental health facilities dished out lobotomies like brain candy; at this school, children are humiliated, beaten, punished with sensory depirvation and all the, for lack of a better term, old-school abuse tactics for dealing with autistics, from the dark days of behaviorism. Gee, thanks for looking out for us, Blue States.

Just so you guys know, I have zero respect for the parents that tolerate this. If I were there with kids in school (well first of all I'd move to civilization), they'd be in a secular private school, a charter school, or homeschooled.

That's pretty fucked up. When I took a psychology class we once toured a school for special needs students with conditions like autism, but they were all treated exceptionally well, none of that happens down here.

That it is even possible for a student to choose " corporal punishment" is eyebrow raising.

Besides which - apparently the corporal punishment wasn't properly administered if the district says it has to be delivered by people the same sex as the student and it wasn't.

It reads like "we'll if I'd known a guy was going to be doing the paddling neither of us would have agreed" - is it possible to back out of a paddling, or once you've selected that as a punishment your locked into it? Presumably because the paddler had gotten their paddlin arm all warmed up.

Sorry, between this, the AL MVP (baseball) discussion, the NFL replacement ref discussion, a Marine shooting his friend in the face to get rid of his hiccups, and 4 hours of sleep last night, my sensitivity to stupid things is on the mend.

I can understand the general case, but that's not what happens at that school - the parent knew her daughter would prefer a spanking, and it's at the consent of the parent, rather at the whim of the school. That she asked for corporal punishment and complained when she got what she asked for - notwithstanding her claim that a man shouldn't administer corporal punishment either because men hit harder or they can't control their urges - is frivolous.

As far as the cheating thing goes, I'd assume that she either helped the person cheat or didn't take any action to prevent the person from cheating.

Typically, no, it doesn't - but since I have no clue what qualifies for that kind of offense in Texas high schools, I kind of have to list all the possibilities.

Actually, from reading the link provided in the CNN article:

Taylor said she didn't know a fellow student copied some of her classwork, but the school sent both girls to two days of in-school suspension.

There you go.

Oh, and:

"I think Taylor is proof that we need to keep that policy," she said. "I don't believe a man intentionally meant to do that to her, but it still happens, because men are too big and strong to be hitting 96-pound girls."

That's her reasoning.

Ehh I can see the issue if there's an over use of force. I mean I do think the U.S schools form of discipline is well lacking. From my highschool experiance the forms of discipline (in Kansas) that the school was allowed to use didn't do shit to discipline the fuck up kids. But I also don't think a male teacher should be able to wake the hell out of a female student I do think so form of physical punishment should be used. Although spanking has been so demonized I don't think it would work.
