If you were president of the United States

If you were the president of the United States of America, what party would you be a part of and what would you do as president?

I would be a Republican president and I would lower taxes, increase state sovereignty, let each individual state decide whether or not they want to legalize homosexual marriages. I would also make healthcare optional to the individual and abolish social welfare unless the people actually want to work. I do not know if I would support a national ban on abortions or if I would leave it up to each state. I would also cut spending on the military, but promote national defense. I would also abolish the U.S. Patriot Act and promote isolationism and non- interventionism.

What would you do as POTUS?

I would do nothing because the president doesn't have sufficient power to do most of the things candidates claim they will do. I would instead spread five years doing photo ops and secretly planting marijuana forests in Rhode Island while things took care of themselves.

I'd be an independent, so naturally I'd never win.

I would commute the sentences of all non-violent drug offenders, pull out of Afghanistan, realign American forces worldwide, and open the border so immigrants can do all the jobs we expect them to do without fear of being caught. It would make it much easier to track down people who actually aren't supposed to be here, like human smugglers/smugglees and drug-traffickers, if we gave laborers a pass.

That'd defeat the purpose of illegals. If we wanted to pay people minimum wage to do that stuff, we'd get Americans doing them.

Cut taxes in general and make it work by smashing and combining some federal departments (Energy, Veteran's Affairs, Education, and few others that escape me now). I'd do my best to create a policy of non-interventionism, re open trade with Cuba and other countries we have trade restrictions with. I'd smooth out relations with France, Russia, and China, especially China. Co-operative missions and more trade would be a good place to start. Abolish the electoral college and go by a general election. Give gay marriage, abortion, and drug laws to the States. Trash NCLB and drastically revamp our immigration laws.

But you can't really solve the problem of an overwrought Border Patrol unless you stop putting so much undue focus on people who are only here to work. I don't remember if past worker-permit bills, like McCain-Kennedy, even required laborers to be paid minimum wage. I don't think they did.

Assuming that our power as President is enough so that we can get done what we intend, and I'd be allowed to run even though I wasn't born in America and I'm not over 35, I would be a Democratic President. My plan would be to make sure I'm running the country during a time of economic prosperity. I would introduce universal healthcare, which if a citizen refuses to use in any way (which would be difficult) could get a tax return on it. I would severely cut the military budget to afford this and also be able to lower taxes. I would introduce electoral reform, abolishing electoral colleges and scrapping the First-Past-The-Post system in favour of the Additional Vote. The future Presidential Elections would run on a second ballot system. I would pass a number of federal laws regarding equal rights, including gay marriage and a bunch of other things. I would legalise Marijuana and decriminalise a lot of other more recreational drugs. I would open up our borders to more immigration and more trade. I would eliminate trade barriers or at least reduce them. I would support the private sector is taking advantage of these policies. I would slightly reduce government size but still allow it to be fully functional. I would improve education, welfare and a bunch of other programmes. No longer will a good number of Americans live below the poverty line. I'd also make sure to capitalise on the publicity of being an internet savvy president. I'd quote appropriate memes when I can, just for kicks. I'd try and make sure that political education gets to the extent where the two party system no longer exists and legitimate parties like the Green Party and Libertarian Party have a major say in states and general elections.

Oh, and I'd sign emission treaties and work towards more cohesive international alliances.

Oh yeah, and restrict the fuck out of guns.

Some of these things can't be done just by the grace of being president, you know... You need the support of Congress to pass laws and the Supreme Court to uphold them when your opponents call your most controversial bits unconstitutional.
