Sexual Assault Victim Faces Jail Time

Postby Gauthier » Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:02 pm

Savannah Dietrich, 17-Year-Old Sexual Assault Victim, Faces Charge For Naming Attackers

I thought this sort of thing only happened in Saudi Arabia, punishing sexual assault victims more than the perpetrators. I just can't write out a lot, it's just that wrong to me.

Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

Why the gag order if they have already been convicted (plead guilty)?

Er, all sympathy for the girl, but I'm not sure how she - and more importantly her parents - thought it would be a good idea to disobey an order by the court.

Yes, let's transform our justice system into a name-and-shame parade of scumbags, the sort of thing which makes Albertans piss themselves with joy. I don't see any problem with that (oh, except for the problem of false accusations, and the damage it causes to our ability to rehabilitate if necessary, and a few other things which i can't even be fucked

She is not jailed for being raped she is jailed for violating a court gag order.

Also the accused were minors, you do not release the names of minor suspects. It is so when their record gets sealed they can make a fresh start.

Sexual Assault Victim Jailed

Postby Cill Charthaigh » Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:22 pm

She wasn't jailed, and she violated a court order.

This isn't victim blaming.

I left that out intentionally to save your dignity, but okay. "boo hoo, rapists suck so we need revenge" is hardly the best thought-out policy ever imagined, and it doesn't address either of the problems I brought up with it.

Edit: hmm, I'm being a bit of an asshole here, aren't I? Do pretend I'm not.

I was getting ready to be all pissed off at victim blaming, but after reading the rest of the posts in the thread, I'm now pissed of at the OP for making an intentionally deceptive post so as to make me think it was victim blaming.

Er, you said "boo hoo, who cares if rapists are publicly shamed. this is a travesty."

I fail to see any qualitative difference between that and "boo hoo, rapists suck so we need revenge," other than that the original quote indicates that you're angry as well.

Is there some extra layer I'm missing here?

The threat of jail is real enough however, I think the OP should fix their title.

This is a shitty situation. On one hand: she violated a court order and thus it is right to charge her with contempt but I think the punishment she faces is ridiculous. On the other: I also think that the two boys in question are being given too much leeway and that would make myself want to speak out too - I think she was brave for coming out about it in public but she did so in violation of a court order and so broke a law so she deserves to be charged with contempt but simultaneously the whole charade is a miscarriage of justice in the name of efficiency.
