Rugby 7s WC II - Everything Thread

Postby Polar Islandstates » Mon Jun 25, 2012 2:36 pm

Welcome to the second rugby sevens world cup, held here in Polar Islandstates! We're all very excited to get things underway, so let's kick things off with the draw and the format...

Teams were sorted according to rank (with the exception of Polar Islandstates as host) and placed in one of eight pots. These pots were then drawn randomly to produce the four groups. These groups were then randomised for scheduling purposes. These groups are:

GROUP A:
Polar Islandstates
Megadia & the Prince Bartholomew Islands
Northern Sunrise Islands
Adun
Cyprardeos
Cyborg Holland
The Babbage Islands
Nakatumo Isle

GROUP B:
84733842
The Kiaser Colonies
Carmadin
Bloodbath Generation
Fiencia
Bongo Johnson
Western Cuba
Free South Califas

GROUP C:
Vamprican-Krumbian Confederacy
Deandean98
Dussianrepublic
Euskirribakondara
Filopines
Kulverint
Licentiapacisterra
Darmen

GROUP D:
Thatius
Falconear
Civil Citizenry
Khabarovsk Krai
Sakhovelo
Free University
Sicoutimont
The Icemark

FORMAT
I will be copying the format from the official rugby sevens world series IRL, only with groups of eight, not four. With this in mind, there will be THREE points for a WIN, TWO points for a DRAW, and ONE point for a LOSS. The top two of each group will go through to play off for the CUP. The next two in each group will have the opportunity to play off for the SHIELD. The penultimate two teams in each group will have the the chance to play off for the BOWL, and the last two will have the chance to play off for the consolation for the PLATE.

The matchups for the the quarter finals will be A1vD2, B1vC2, C1vB2, D1vA2, and so on down the pairs until the last quarter final for the PLATE is D7vA8. The semi finals will see the winners of each pair of quarter finals match up, with the losers playoing for position, until we have the full list of placings, from CUP WINNER, through p2, p3, p4, p5, p6, p7, p8, to SHIELD WINNER and beyond, all the way down the p16. If that's now clear now, hopefully it will become so later on, but for now just know that each team is guaranteed ten matches precisely. Tie-breakers favour head to heads, then points scoring, then points difference, the points scoring itself is standard rugby union. There are no style modifiers.

SCHEDULE
June, Thurs 28th - MD1: 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5
Fri 29th - MD2: 8v5, 6v4, 7v3, 1v2
Sat 30th - MD3: 2v8, 3v1, 4v7, 5v6
July, Sun 1st - MD4: 8v6, 7v5, 1v4, 2v3
Mon 2nd - MD5: 3v8, 4v2, 5v1, 6v7
Tues 3rd - MD6: 8v7, 1v6, 2v5, 3v4
Weds 4th - MD7: 4v8, 5v3, 6v2, 7v1
Thurs 5th - Day off
Fri 6th - Quarter Finals
Sat 7th - Semi Final
Sun 8th - Finals

CUTOFFS will be around 11pm BST on the days listed above, and be aware, RP bonus will be considerable, and rosters will count as 1 matchday's worth. As ever, include the permissions list with your roster, and multiple RPs per MD will be treated as one. And do not forget, RPs done on the day off before the quarter finals will COUNT DOUBLE!

VENUE
for those unaware, sevens tournaments are far more like festivals that regular world cups, with multiple matches in the same day, usually in the same venue. To that aim, ALL matches across ALL groups in a single matchday will be RPed as happening on the same day ICly, with the next matches the next day. In other words, apart from the fact that all match scores will be appearing at the same time, in terms of days, this tournament will be happening in real time. Ish. For arguments sake lets say matches in Group A are first and so on and so forth.

The venue for your triumphs and failures will be the home of the esteemed Polarian rugby union club, the Northbrook Harlequins - the 26,244 seater Harlequin Park.
Image

All RPs, Rosters, and Results are to be posted in this thread from now on. Bongo Johnson had special dispensation due to absence between this post and the start of the tournament.

Well, I think that's everything. At least if is isn't you'll see a swift edit...
Have at it!

84733842 43–7 Harvest Mice

The Federation were absolutely demolished by a nation spelled with numbers today. Federation citizen Élodie Xylander fared perhaps even worse in Free University's shutout loss. While there is a long rugby tradition in San Diego County, including the historic Rugby 7s IRB tournaments at Gaslamp Quarter Stadium, the Harvest Mouse representatives aren't expected to fare much better against the other international competition. We now face a -36 points deficit in tiebreakers regardless.

TBI Squad: Rugby Sevens World Cup II

This squad is entirely from the land of Ruadha, a one-time colony about 1100 kilometres south of the Islands proper. Rugby is not a big sport in their Gaelic-influenced culture. But a dedicated core of players exists, particularly around the seat of Stonehaven, and their convincing unbeaten win in the prestigious open tournament at Berkley University led to an invitation to represent the nation in the World Cup.

Asterisked players are women. The two star-quality players are the scrum-half O'Concannon and the full-back MacLysaght.

Forwards

Eoghainín Cochrane (Elgin), prop
Lochlainn O'Brennan (Greenlaw), hooker
Breasal Stirling (Kilkenny), prop
Gilleasbuig O'Conor (Castlebar), reserve forward
Tormod Barrett (Dingwall), reserve forward

Backs

*Raonaild O'Concannon (Stonehaven), scrum-half
*Saoirse Boyle (Stonehaven), fly-half
*Caitlín Ross (Clonmel), centre
Alex MacLysaght (Stonehaven), full-back
*Aislin MacBean (Stonehaven), reserve back
*Magaidh Jordan (Perth), reserve back
Ruaidhri Butler (Wicklow), reserve back

Permissions: No godmods or injuries likely to shelve a player for more than one match, please. Otherwise, have fun.
NS World Cup: Runner-up 55/59; Third place 50/52/58/62/63; Host 49/54/60.

Matimar is off to a good start at the second Rugby Sevens World Cup in Polar Islandstates. Our national sevens team posted a 43-7 win over Free South Califas at Harlequin Park to take the lead of Group B after the first of seven qualification rounds.

The depth of the Matimar backfield was evident with all four starting backs scoring at least one try each and seven tries scored in all. Lote Spura, wearing number six and starting in the pamsig slot, ran to glory four times. Although the inexperience of the Harvest Mice on the world stage was evident, they gamely fought on with occasional flashes of brilliance. Terri Winogrodski's second-half try to put Free South Califas on the board was an especially delightful piece of hard running and nimble evasion.

Our second round tie will be against rugby stalwarts The Kiaser Colonies, and it should be a good gauge of the real potential of this squad.
Our number script: 0=O, 00=U, 1=L, 2=R, 3=E, 33=I, 4=A, 5=S, 6=G, 7=T, 8=M, 9=P
(Of course, it's still a constructed language...)

Civil Citizenry 43–0 Free University

The Scholars went down in embarrassing fashion vs the Citiz. The intramural stars have been thoroughly humbled, and reminded of their relationship to international rugby competition. Domestic polls show that Free University fans don't expect much better from the rest of the tournament, but will continue to support their side regardless. The emotional impact of the blowout losses by both Free University and Free South Califas was felt especially hard in the pubs of the School of South Califas Law, though Califans are slightly overrepresented in the rest of the university too. Citiz students celebrated the victory in Citiz-owned pubs across campus.

TKC 26-10 Western Cuba

The Kiaser Colonies opened their second rugby sevens world cup campaign in good form against the previous editions hosts Western Cuba. Due to all matches being played the number of fans from both nations was scarce with small groups scattered around Harlequin Park. In the game before Matimar beat Free South Califas 43-7 to top the group. The Kiaser and West Cubans both have strong sevens teams and the game promised to be a real clash of titans. It was The Kiaser Colonies who opened the scoring courtesy of Natal Oritz's misfortune. Only 37 seconds from kickoff Stephen Gill crossed the line under the Western Cuba posts after Oritz lost his footing over on the side of the pitch while drifting across in defence. Gill took full advantage of the newly created overlap and ran under the posts from 40m out. The conversion was no trouble for him and The Kiaser Colonies led 7-0. Western Cuba hit back in the 3rd minute with a try of their own. After keeping possession for a minute and a half and twice being driven back into their half by a strong Kiaser push defence, a wonderfully timed grubber kick from Garcia Reyes put Monte Pena in behind James Watson just out side their 22. Watson had covered the 10 m gap between them just inside the Kiaser half but his attempted tap tackle only slowed Pena momentarily. Pena looked to be clean through to the posts but a determined chase from Will O'Connor from the opposite wing forced Pena to head into the corner to avoid being tackled. As a result he was unable to convert and they remained 7-5 behind. Jay Pen increased The Kiaser Colonies lead just before the end of the half when Conner Stefanovic drew 2 defenders into a tackle and put Pen through the gap with an inch perfect offload. Pen converted and left the score at 14-5 going into the second half.

Neither side made any changes for the second half after the close cut first half. Kiaser number 2 Daniel O'Brien was the fourth player to register on the score board in the 9th minute when he side stepped both Gilberto Mendez and Tajo Jimenez in quick succession only 15m from the line and dotted down in the corner putting The Kiaser Colonies 19-5 ahead. O'Brien was unsuccessful with his conversion attempt leaving the gap at 14. Stefanovic could have made it 24-5 soon after but knocked on Andrew Davies' pass on the line. Western Cuba did not give up on the game and continued to create chance after chance in the game. A piece of brilliant attacking rugby by Pablo Flores cut the Kiaser defence to shreds for their second try. The Kiaser Colonies defence found themselves bunched up in the centre of the pitch after being stretched by quick West Cuban hands. Flores beat Davies after shuffling* inside him while throwing a dummy pass and evaded Pen's cover tackle with a superb roll. Flores made it into the Kiaser 22 and was confronted by O'Connor and Watson who managed to chase back in front of him. Just before he reached O'Connor he popped a pass to Mendez who ran a great line between the defenders leaving them with no chance at tackling him and securing Western Cuba's second try. Unfortunately his conversion hit the post and left his side behind by 9 with 2 minutes left on the clock. Western Cuba continued to attack and were unlucky to concede the final try after the siren when O'Connor intercepted Reyes' pass and ran from outside the Kiaser 22 and under the Western Cuba posts. He made no mistake with the conversion and and the final score finished 26-10.

After day 1 The Kiaser Colonies are 3rd in their group after Matimar defeated Free South Califas 43–7 and Carmadin beat Bongo Johnson 36-7. Also in group B Bloodbath Generation lost 17–19 to Fiencia in a thrilling encounter. Alex Murray's TKC (ranked 7) face Matimar (ranked 26) in their next game. Despite the large gap in rank an upset could be on the agenda for the underdogs as they looked very dangerous against Free South Califas. Even though Western Cuba were the team most likely to cause an upset it is still possible that Matimar could push the Kiasers to the edge.

FILOPINES LOSE TO EUSKIRRIBAKONDARA
When the Filopines rugby sevens walked onto Harlequin Park, they thought they could win this. But they were wrong. Euskirribakondara scored 4 succesive tries and converted them all. Then they scored a drop goal to have the score as thirty-one. It took us until the last minute to score a try with Murray English scoring the try.

Free South Califas 24–12 Fiencia

The Harvest Mice looked downright awful in yesterday's thrashing by 84733842, who they are now tied for second place with. At 1-1, they are also tied with Fiencia, as well as Western Cuba, Carmadin and Bongo Johnson. The group is obviously wide open. However, FSC still carry a -24 PD, next worst to Bongo Johnson in that group, and only by three points. After being all but shut out by the numerical nation, the bit of offense versus Fencia is a pleasant surprise.

Free University 0–50 Khabarovsk Krai

The R7WC2 campaign went from humbling to just plain ugly today for the Scholars. After losing 43-0 to the undefeated Citiz, they were shut out again in even more humiliating fashion somehow. Free University were expected to do poorly in this, their opening tournament, but this is just embarrassing.

In other group news, K.K. and Civil Citizenry lead the group with Thatius, all tied at 2-0. The Citiz beat Sicoutimont (1-1) 29-7, while Thatius downed Falconear (0-2) by the same score.
