American Beer

Postby Lackadaisical2 » Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:11 pm

What do people for the US think of domestic beers?

Honestly I think they suck, in most cases. I'd gladly drink Molson or Labatts before taking anything American. I recently tried Budweiser for the first time since I was like 13 due to me moving to another area where Canadian beers are less common. I can drink Miller light, and I rather like Yuengling, but Molson is my fav.

Hey judging US beer by Budweiser is like judging German beer by Bitburger.

Miller light? You really havent experimented much.

My husband likes a lot of micro-brews. Budweiser is to American beer as Spam is to Pork chops.

Sam Adams is alright for a beer, but much better than other American beers. Blue Ribbon is my favorite.

haha, i didn't say it was the best, but apparently its pretty popular, I'd rather just drink water personally. I have tried a bit of beers from smaller breweries, but I find I still prefer my Molson to them. And yes, I find Coors a bit better than Miller, now that I think of it.

Spam is also popular for the same reason. It is cheap.

saying Sam Adams is a bit vague, do you mean the Boston Lager? Cause I ended up buying some Octoberfest, and apparently its not the beer of theirs that I like. I haven't tried PBR, at least not within memory, is it actually any good?

Have you tried Yuengling? Also, Sam Adams has many different varieties, you might like one of them.

If you want cheap beer Shiner is okay-ish.

Yes, Yuengling is quite good (I mentioned it in my first post iirc), but its not available where I am now :( besides it'd probably be expensive as my Canadian beer anyway.

I've never heard of shiner before, I guess I'll take a look.

ahhh... The only Texas beer I've had was Lone Star... yeah. I doubt they'd have it hear, since I'm quite a bit away from Texas.

Well, bock is one variety. Hubby drinks some kind of it with honey in it, it doesn't smell as bad.

My husband is a big beer fan. I really don't care for it at all.

We have some Redstripe, Redbridge, and Guinness on hand. It's all just beer to me, apparently there's differences in it though (he says).

American beer is generally bad because it isn't cellared properly. So it's all skunky. And all bottled beer is crap.

But if you have to buy bottled beer, avoid anything in a green or clear bottle. Only dark brown bottles protect beer from skunking.

Finally, the water is all wrong on this continent. Just like you can't get good tea in the US, you can't get good beer in the US. The coffee is passable. Cheaper american wines are also alright, if you remember not to have the chardonnay (can't get that right either).

I blame the FDA tbqh.

Cleveland is not known as the beer capitol of anywhere yet we do have some outstanding micro-breweries. Willoughby brewery has an outstanding red wheat. My favorite is Buckeye brewery's Buckeye brew and Great Lakes brewery hasmany nice seasonal brews.

I'd have to agree about the Chardonnay. I've had a few and the last one I tried from California was.. just not right. And I find I do generally drink beers from dark bottles, so no problem there.
btw, weren't you saying how the entire economy was going to collapse before? Are you still hedging your bets on that or are you looking towards recovery too?

I'm certainly no expert but last year my wife gave me a subscription to the Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. Here is the journal I kept as I drank my way through it over 12 months:
