Rules on puppet filling regions?

Postby Division 11 » Tue Sep 15, 2009 2:28 pm

I like to ask the question if there is any ruling on how many puppets you can fill a region because from what I can see, things are going a bit overboard.

The Central Pacific is now filled with nearly 700 puppets, making it the "largest player-created" region in the World. Out of the other Top 10, Hellenic Civilization and Eastern Roman Empire are both known to be puppet or fake regions, both hover around 300.

Some concerns that I like to raise:
- If left unchecked, there might be more and more of these fake regions, making the "top 10" a complete farce and belittling the efforts of genuine regions who spent hours recruiting only to see their ranking artificially lowered.

- Even though these puppets currently are staying-put, there is the likelihood of them being moved. What are the impacts if the person controlling them decides to move them to another region (i.e. puppet flood), or to one of the feeders like The Rejected Realms and Lazarus?

Is it time for a review before it gets out of hand?

If they all moved to a region created by a different player or a feeder, then they'd probably be done for spamming the regional happenings.

As long as only 1 puppet is in the WA, there's been no word from the boss stating any limitations on the number of puppet nations a single player can own, and any such limitation is probably not going to happen. We've had puppet masters in the past with over 200 nations; it requires a lot of effort to keep so many nations going, that some might argue is just as much work as the "genuine" regions put into recruiting.

Obviously I can't speak with 100% certainty for what Max would say on the subject, but effort is effort, whether it's a dedicated recruiting effort or a dedicated puppeteer. I'm fairly certain he wouldn't see one form of effort as inherently "wrong" compared to the other; it's just a different way of playing around with the framework the game provides.

I don't see a problem with large puppet regions. True, they skew the "Largest Region" stats, but they're much more limited than "real" regions. A 100% puppet region will never legally have a Delegate, participate in raiding/defending, or have interesting RPs.

Nevertheless, if you're truly interested in rankings, you can simply ignore them - just as you do to feeders when you make a list of the top 10 "largest player-created regions".

Actually if you just fill out the first page, and then leave all the questions on the second page blank it really only takes a matter of seconds to create a puppet, then all he has to do is move it to the region, and possibly turn on vacation mode.

And if the creator of all those puppets manually goes through and logs into those nations, I'd say it's a waste of time, because it would be faster to just continue making new puppets. For example, a player could create 10 puppets a day and put them in the region (and turn on vacation mode). After 60 days has passed there are 600 nations in the region, and and as long as he continues to put 10 puppets in a day his regioin will remain huge. (Obviously, someone could do this with much more than 10 puppets/day.) And if THAT is how the puppet regions are being supported (and it makes more sense to do it this way), they will be running through names like crazy... Which may be a problem...

If I had a reason too, I could totally spend 5 minutes doing that.

The better question would be WHY people need to flood these regions with puppets, I just don't really get it.

I suggest asking them because I fear that the mods cannot mind read and instantly know players' intentions.

So yeah, ask the people doing it :)

One possibility is to claim, when recruiting, that they have a really large, vibrant region. That can attract people a lot more than "I'm starting on my own, come join me!"

I'm really interested to know how much time is needed to do this.. I may have to give it a shot, just to see if it really does take a long time ect.

I think that if I had to think up 700 names that might take a while... I mean... That's a lot! I'd probably start to repeat after a while. :)

I can understand creating small puppet regions. But, a 700 nation puppet region sounds like much more work than it's worth. I don't know if I could even think up 700 NAMES. And I shudder to think of keeping track of that many pups. I have enough trouble keeping track of a tiny fraction of that number.

I've seen sets of puppets that had a single, shared name with numbers added after this to differentiate them...

Since I seem to be on the forum today, might as well put my 2 cents into this thread too,I think if some guy/gal wants to sit about and create 400 puppets, let him/her, just I wont take a puppet region seriously after all my region is small, but they are for the most part, outside from WA troopers, not puppets.

If they really want to do that, as long as only one is in the WA and they don't use all those puppets against some nation in a war(5 million x 700 is 3.5 billion...) then I don't see why anyone would really care.

I think I've had about 120-130 puppets over my NS career, maybe more. The hard part isn't thinking up names, it's remembering the login details (names & passwords) -- and remembering to log in every sixty days or so. And I suppose someone could theoretically write a script that would log in automatically, although I don't know if the rules permit that.

That would most certainly be a "no." Salusa ruled that scripts that actually do any element of playing the game such as sign-in/eject or ban from a region/etc aren't allowed.
