DNDLHQ OTTAWA: Canadian Armed Forces Looking for Embassies

H E L L O NationStates!
This is the Department of National Defence Canada for the "region" Canadian Forces. We just recently arrived in NationStates and we are looking to connect embassies with other regions within this game. If you have a region that would be interested, we will insure your nation with security and relief from (eg. invasions, attacks, threats etc.). Please consider the Canadian Forces for we are known as peace keepers.

Wrong forum, but it is true that the Canadian Forces just got snubbed by Germany regarding a new base placed near Cologne. So, NSG, as your new OP, what say you? Was it wrong for Germany to so callously refuse our inviting ourselves into the Cologne-Bonn airport to use as a support base? Was Canada too brash? Are both sides at fault? OTTAWA — German politicians and members of the public have rejected the Defence Department’s plans to create a military logistics base near Cologne, telling the Canadians they’ll have to go elsewhere.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced with great fanfare last week the decision to locate the small base, known as a support hub, at Germany’s Cologne-Bonn Airport (or as it is called in German, Köln-Bonn). MacKay released the news during a visit to Ottawa by German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere.

But MacKay’s plan came as a complete surprise to the public and local politicians in Germany, who were never consulted, and who are against the move.

“The airport of a major city is not the right location for additional military air traffic,” Cologne Lord Mayor Juergen Roters said.

The Cologne-Bonn Airport is one of the busiest in Germany and locals are against having additional military aircraft operate from there because of the added noise pollution. The airport serves Bonn, Cologne and the surrounding area.

Personally, I can understand the German parliament's opposition, considering first of all the lack of mention before Canada's public announcement that there were any plans to do so. Of course, on the other hand, I can understand the need for multiple logistical choices in an increasingly global tendency for conflicts, including our commitments with the UN.
