I love fishing.
Sadly, I've only been able to go to a canal and try to catch sunfish and peacock bass.
In the past, I tried to fish for cobia and kingfish out on the ocean.

I approve of this thread. I've fished my whole life, mostly in creeks. Started tying my own flies recently too, carrying on a bit of family tradition. My father lived for it.

I do fish during the Summer Months. Never caught anything in my life though. Kind of makes it hard when everybody here in Hunting-Fishing Land has caught a Fish and killed a Deer.

Also it's legal to make a Homemade Pond? *Grabs Shovel and Pick*

I absolutely love fishing. I used to go every summer with some buddies up to northern Quebéc to fish muskies, northerns, and walleyes.

I've been fishing a few times, and find it rather enjoyable.
It's not exactly a hobby, just an occasional pastime... once in a blue moon.

Never really fished until this past year.

Girlfriend and I moved into an apartment above a Bait/Tackle shop that's a short walk from a river filled with fish. Being an old hand at it, she convinced me to go fish with her.

Loved every minute of it. Only caught some smallish large/small mouth Bass (as well as a few pest fish we got to destroy cause the law said we should) but it was still a lot of fun.

Wouldn't eat any though. Something about eating Fish out of the Detroit river seems like a bad idea

I love and have always loved catching northern pike. They are fascinating fish, and they fight like nothing else. I've never had much luck with muskies though.

Going out to a nature preserve, seeing and hearing birds, bees, and everything in between, while watching and waiting and hoping that maybe today you'll catch "The Big One™" :p. To me, it is a break from normal life, a way to release myself while hoping for a big fish and dreaming about trips around the world to catch fish and experience nature. Even talking and arguing with people on NS over politics comes no where even close to enjoying a day of lazyness at a local pond. But enough about me, because this is the thread for learning other people's experiences on the water, to enjoy a good controversy on favorite equipment and baits, and to have a place to discuss species and other fun parts of fishing. Basically, a thread dedicated to the discussion of, drumroll please... FISHING.
So, NSG, to start off this conversation, here are a few questions for anybody who fishes as a hobby, or even just for fun:
What species do you tend to fish for?
Any favorite Baits?
On a scale of one to ten, one being "I don't care" and ten being "I am willing to murder for a chance to fish at a halfway good lake", how much do you like fishing?

Enjoy!
PS: I am pretty sure this is the right forum, but if it isn't please tell me :)

I don't go in for fishing much, not liking fish, but I've caught a few eels, just like the rest of us.

ALthough, one was with my bare hands (plus three other pairs).

Small fish can be fun to catch. Perch are pretty sweet and make great eating.

I once caught a perch that was 2 lbs. That's about this big *gestures with hands*. It was the biggest perch I've ever seen.

For me, having attended a private school, fishing was a convenient excuse to go have a smoke or two. Still, I can fly-fish with reasonable skill because of it.

I find it hard to smoke and fish at the same time.

Fly-fishing is quite challenging, but it still is my preferred method of fishing. I haven't been fishing in about three years, though.

I fished once in my life. That was enough for me. During that trip I was the only one who caught anything, and I ate my catch. But after that I never wanted to go fishing again. And if I did, I would throw the fish back in the water. I kind if just became like my dad and had a hard time just watching a fish squirming, and then killing it. My dad used to fish and throw them back, until he and his brother caught one and threw it back, and it just floated to the top. They both pretty much went "This sucks" and never went fishing again.

I took up golf for the same reason though how I thought anyone was fooled by me thwacking a golf ball with a 5 iron across fairways direct to the surrounding woods with a couple of friends...

Used to fish when I was a kid. In lakes and streams, and in the sea.
Lakes/streams for trouts and chubs.
Sea for mackerels, pagelli, occasionally a sole and even a conger.

Baits, that is the problem. No bait for the trout (just the fly sometimes), but the bait for seafish... yeeeuck... Mostly that's why I quit fishing. I couldn't stand having that can of ugly big disgusting green worms around anymore.

Anyway you forgot the most important part of fishing... mine was bigger. :D

Cougar attacks on adults are practically unheard of, but it's a good idea to pack a knife or two with you anyway, simply because knives are damn useful.
