Units

Postby Lenzum » Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:06 pm

What units are used in your country? Also, how strict is this.

Lenzum requires strict use of Imperial units only, but allows metric supplementary measures on items that may be sold outside the Empire.

Metric is 'officially' used here in the US, but it's more of a tradition thing than an official thing. We use both the Metric and Imperial systems obviously.

Edit: Oh, you mean the NS countries. Well, I guess mine would use both, don't really care about it.

Might want to ask a mod to move this to the "Factbooks & National Information" forum, it'd fit better there.
For when that happens, Celtic Colonies is 98% metric, only a few older folks still hang on to the old imperial system.

I agree. This looks like an RP thing. Don't worry, you're new here. We'll go easy on you this time ;)

Bosiu uses the units of SI, though there are exceptions to certain industries.

Metric is the standard, but it's not like it's illegal to sell stuff calibrated on different scales.

We use the metric system, although kids are taught the imperial system at school. (Nobody's quite sure why it appears in the maths syllabus, though, since it's never used in CL.)
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)

Metric is measurement.
Celsius is temperature.
Spelling is US version. (Except for Grey.)

Imperial is seen as quite useless, Fahrenheit as too awkward, while British English looks funny.

Metric are used UNLESS you are driving, in which case you use miles per hour. We also accept metrics and imperials for weights of persons. Anything else must be metric

YellowApplans generally use a hexadecimal adaptation of the Système international d'unités, called the YellowApple Measurement System. Key differences are that instead of multiples of 10, YAMS utilizes multiples of 16 (0x10). Thus, 1 YellowApplan kilometer = 4,096 meters, while 1 YellowApplan millimeter = 1/4096 meters. All base units are equal in YAMS and SI except the gram, as the kilogram is regarded as the YAMS base unit for mass (1 YAMS gram = 1/4096 kilograms).

The government uses, out of habit, the metric system and the Celsius system. However, the imperial system has worked its way into colloquial usage by the general populace.

SI units and not very strict
Kalaspia-Shimarata's flag represents the Union between K&S. The dark blue represents the sea and the light blue represents the sky. In Kalashi language considers light blue and dark blue to be different colours. England colonised, and unified K&S, between 1774 and 1953, and English, light blue and dark blue are considered to be the same colour. Therefore, the contrast between dark blue and light blue represents the union, but the differences between K&S where as blue being two but simultaneously one colour represents K&S being two, but simultaniously one entity. The opposite to the symmetry represents the unity and indipendance of K&S, whilst also representing the Kalashi culture of opposite symmetry.KS is 75% Christian, hence the cross.

Further to my initial posting, Lenzum requires nations that are importing to provide Imperial equivalents on their products.

Metric is educated briefly in schools, at around age 11, but the system is seen with derision as 'units for dummies' even by the lower intelligence students.

Lenzum, sadly, is quite xenophobic. :(

Imperial Russian measurements for most things, metric for many import/export products and those requiring international standards (eg. most of our military weapons, and military and civilian motorized vehicles, are Swedish made so soliders and mechanics have to know metric). As the international influences grow, so does familiarity with metric and we will probably convert completely to metric by mid-century.

We use the metric system and only the metric system; the Imperial system is ancient and outdated, and is taught nowhere else outside of history classes.
