HIV vaccine to begin testing

Postby Wikkiwallana » Tue Dec 20, 2011 12:19 pm

A vaccine that may prevent HIV has been given the green light by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical trials in humans, according to Canadian researchers.

Here's hoping it works, this would be an amazing breakthrough if it does! Here's hoping this leads to AIDS going the way of smallpox.

Cynicism: unsubstantiated rumors of miracle drugs have floated around the HIV-positive community for as long as the virus has been around.

The vaccine would've already been developed by now if not for deforestation.

...but hey, here's to hoping.

FDA approval for human trials is not an unsubstantiated rumor. Also, what does deforestation have to do with this?

It means its passed rat and monkey testing. Human testing, in most cases, tends to be little more then symbolic.

It's passed animal testing, otherwise the FDA wouldn't be giving it the go ahead. How are you supposed to use a drug to treat a human disease if you don't use it in humans?

Or in vino ... sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway, while deforestation is deplorable, we can't weep over every tree because it might have contained a miracle drug. And anyway, they found other trees in the botanical gardens (see? imperialism has its uses) and another, related species that also has HIV-active compounds. Maybe we should send research teams to the older botanic gardens. Who knows what's lurking in there?

That's just another anti HIV drug at best, would put off development into full blown AIDS a little longer.

BS. Human testing is one of the most difficult parts of the clinical trials. More than that animal testing by no means tells scientists what will happen in humans. True aniumal testing will always occur before human testing but other animals and humans do not always react to a drug the same way. Human testing takes years to complete and tens of thousands of dollars. In addition I doubt FDA would insist on it if it simply were symbolic.

My 'don't know how things work' portion of my brain that decides to just make wild largely arbitrary assumptions (it made sense to me...) is terrified of how a vaccine test would work in crazy brain mode.

Because I assume, and have to be wrong, that you take the vaccine and then go get all up in that HIV to see if you don't get the AIDS. Which would suck ass for the guy if it didn't work. "Sorry, vaccine seems not to work, you've got the AIDS."

And this is why I seem not to get any of that research money I keep not applying for.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

If it is a major drug with severe consequences then yes, human testing is insanely important. However, the vast majority of drugs and makeup (also goes through testing) would probably not be approved by the FDA when it comes to human testing. Just look at the back of any weight loss pill or low grade skin care product.

And this is why I seem not to get any of that research money I keep not applying for.

From the article:
Phase 1. Beginning in January 2012, this phase will involve 30 HIV-positive people on whom safety will be retested.
Phase 2. This phase will examine immune responses in humans and will involve 600 HIV-negative people who are at high risk of contracting the AIDS virus.
Phase 3. This phase will determine the efficacy of the vaccine and will involve 6,000 HIV-negative volunteers at high risk of contracting the virus.

So, no deliberate exposures, just letting lifestyles do that for them.

Especially with HIV, what makes it so hard to make a vaccine for is it mimics the outer coating of our own cells. So a traditional vaccine does not work, would simply set our immune system into tearing itself apart like the virus does already.

Nah they are giving it to "at risk" types which in my own crazy brain means junkies, prostitutes and Russians in general. I think the real danger is retards suddenly deciding that they don't have to use protection if they are vaccinated against HIV which imagine has a 99% chance of happening.
