Prostitution

Postby Genivaria » Sat Dec 03, 2011 11:12 pm

The topic of the day is Prostitution. Please present your arguments for or against now. :D

Ahem.
I think that we should legalize prostitution so that we can then tax and regulate it as a business and the women (or men in some cases) will be protected under the law.
Annnnd GO!

Legalization will result in licentious behavior and would effectively condone immorality.

(I should probably take the feminist route, since thats more sympathetic here, but eh... I can't stomach it)

Hehehe. And what is wrong with being lecherous if it is consenting.
I think its a little odd that if you pay someone to have sex with you on camera its legal. Take the camera away and then its a crime.

Legalize and regulate. Perhaps even incorporate. There should be taxes, a health care plan, educational opportunities. It should be treated like any business. The feminist objection to prostitution concerned the lack of respect given sex workers. Legalizing it is a step towards respect.

Perhaps pornography should be illegal too. It can be damaging to the moral fiber of society in much the same way prostitution is. Taking men away from good women and putting them in the hands of harlots. Pron can be addictive, and damages relationships nationwide. This is all a serious danger for society, divorced and single-parent families are typically 'at risk'(more likely to be impoverished)1,2, not to mention people who are perpetually single. Society, and thus the government has a valid concern.

It's legal where I live and because of this, it's safer for both prostitutes and clients, and doesn't put money in the hands of criminals. Outlawing prostitution will only open sex workers up to the kind of exploitatative and abusive treatment that occurs in the United States and elsewhere while taking away their legal protection, as well as greatly increasing the risk of communicable diseases. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

It would increase jobs. Pimps are little better then slave owners anyway.

IF it were legal, it would be moral. I personally wouldn't do it as it would violate my own personal morality.... but then there are plenty of things which violate my own personal morality which are perfectly legal.

This is the voice of laziness here, but is there a federal statute that prohibits prostitution? With Nevada pulling some kind of under-the-radar fly-by similiar to medical marijuana...
Or is it legal wherever people want to make it legal, and people just haven't done it outside of Nevada because, apparently, we're all idiots?

And yes, prostitution should be legal.

All arguments made either in favor or against the legalization of prostitution are cut of the same cloth as arguments made regarding marajuana. Those against make the weaker case, but (in the U.S.) consist of the vast (but rapidly shrinking) majority.

And yes, prostitution should be legal.

Prostitution in the United States is illegal except in some small rural communities in Nevada. In the United States, each state has the power to regulate prostitution in that state. Only in parts of Nevada is prostitution legal. In all other states prostitution is usually classified as a misdemeanor.

I say legalize it, why isn't this as big of a movement as legalizing pot though?

I say that I have to side with Carlin on this one... it's fucking stupid to make it illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal to give away free.
