What can't you joke about?

Hello, all~

I have a question. What is off-limits for you to joke about? Is there anything that you cannot joke about? Or can you make fun of everything and anything?

For me, I find that everything can be made fun of, but I will take care not to offend anyone. I will often be jokingly racist with my friends, but I know that some people will be offended by that, so I avoid doing it around those who would be offended. Also, I won't joke about something that's hurt someone I know personally. For example, I may joke about 9/11, but not around someone whose parents died in 9/11.
I know that there are folks who make fun of Islam, and that's fine, as long as it's completely respectful and/or not around me.

There is nothing you can't joke about. I've had jokes about my race, religion, and ethnicity right to my face and I'll laugh along if they're good ones.

The only jokes that are offensive are the ones that aren't funny, honestly. I think ethnic/racial/religious humor should be encouraged, because if you can't laugh about something then you probably haven't thought hard enough about it.

Actually if the question were "What CAN you joke about?", "anything" would be the correct response.
To the question "What can't you joke about?" the answer is "nothing".

Depends on the audience. I wouldn't make Jew jokes to my dad, or black jokes to my girlfriend for example.

Depends on the audience. I mean, with my friends, we throw around the sort of stuff that'd get us all kicked out of school. Understandably, I'm more restrained with family or with people I think might be genuinely offended.

I try not to joke around about women because I want in on that circle and making myself look like a dirty pig doesn't really help, as far as I can tell.

'Course once I'm in and planning on staying in, then the line will be subjectively drawn based on who I am conversing with and what I think or know will offend them.

I try pretty hard not to offend people if I can help it, I'm sort of a nice guy and like to keep that reputation active and well-maintained.

Anything. Even horrifying things that are recent should be joked about in my opinion, as laughter is good rehabilitation. Probably dead family members would be something that could be off limits for a bit depending on the scenario.

My only taboo is joking about something that, were it not a joke, would require immediate action. For example, one of my friends who's asthmatic tried to joke that he was coughing up blood after a fencing bout. Since the consequences of mistakenly treating a genuine case as a joke are so severe, I cannot help but take them seriously.

Other than that, everything else is fair game.

Like everything else: Take a look at who's around you before you say something Really Stupid. And when in doubt don't do it. For example, it's a tough way to find out that the kid staring at you in disgust really is a hard-core Mormon, and really kills the conversation when you learn that you've just severely pissed him off.
