So, what is your preference in brand, OS (operating system), and particular software for certain projects?

And the eternal question: Windows or Mac?

1. No preference, even better when I built it myself
2. Windows or Mac? well, there is only one obvious answer to that one.... Linux

At present, I'm using Win7(games)/Linux(everything duel boot (and a useless Dell laptop with Vista on it that I'm stuck on at the minute whilst I fix the above, but hey), using Firefox/Chrome for various online stuff, Blender for 3d stuff, WriteWay/WriteOrDie/Q10 for writing things, GIMP for image stuff, Dreamweaver (old version, got it free) for web development, CodeBlocks for coding stuff, OpenOffice for actually doing something productive on occasion and Thunderbird for email stuff.

The right tool for the job :P

Sometimes the OS is windows 7. Sometimes windows xp. Sometimes a linux flavour. Sometimes SunOS.
Sometimes I use word. Sometimes I use libreoffice. Sometimes I use LaTeX.
Etc. etc. etc.

Though I never use Apple :P

1.HPs usually
2.Linux, BSD and other Unix-like OSes. I particularly like Slackware and its derivatives, such as Zenwalk. Gentoo is pretty great, too.
3. Open source.

Windows or Mac?

The answer is quite obviously Linux-based operating systems.

I. I like Dell, relatively cheap and of reasonable quality.
II. Ubuntu is my favourite OS.
III. Windows 7 is okay.
IV. Chrome is the superior browser.
V. Default Ubuntu programs are usually sufficient.

Windows ME: Bad
Windows XP: Good
Windows Vista: Bad
Windows 7: Good.
Windows 8: Notice a pattern with windows?

OS?
Mac OS Classic Was cool, but its useless today.
Today i use:
Mac For Old mac stuff (i only have an ibook G3)
Windows For most other stuff
Linux For when windows breaks, or when i want a break from windows...
Looking at windows 8 though, i think i might have to move to a mac, or linux...
As For brands, I'm Not sure, I know i'm Not a massive fan of compaq (Because my main system, a CQ-61 Laptop has lasted less than a year, and already lost its screen, and the keyboard doesn't work either.)

My five year old Mac runs like a dream still, so for most things I use it. Also, it has iMovie which is sufficient for my video editing purposes.

However I built a PC that runs Windows 7 (and might run Windows 9 when it comes out because there's no way in he'll I'm putting 8 on it) for gaming. I had to have my Portal 2 fix.

Brand? I like Lenovo ThinkPads. Toshiba in a close second.

Windows or Mac? Linux.

I find Mac OS impenetrable and Windows 7 is just a joke, though I keep it for gaming. Dual boot ftw.

No, they were all fired because of Vista ;)

Linux, on the other hand, coded and contributed to by it's user base. I run all my games on it, and they do well enough.

I actually downloaded the developer preview and tried it. Three hours of download time I'll never see again. Though a funny quirk emerged: shut down doesn't actually shut down the computer, a least not in my experience. After a half hour of sitting and thinking, it restarts the computer. I tried it a few times because it amused me so.

Actually, I'm very green when it comes to coding and commands, but I find Ubuntu works a dream on my laptop. There's a large amount of internet help for Linux newbies too.

I needed to learn 2 phrases, google and the interfaces did the rest.

'yum install ...'

I use Fedora, but restarting tends to fix it. If not, then you're running something through the terminal at some stage from startup..?

EDIT: wait a minute there... How about you use the terminal first?

Well, Re-starting works sometimes....
What, Exactly, Should i do with the terminal first?
Its the default ubuntu application installer, and in one case, the updater that have given me this error....
Maybe i should just use a different type of linux all together, Though i couldn't install it on this PC, which is a problem..

I use fedora, it's:

su
yum install [your package]

But I know that Ubuntu runs slightly differently in terms of package manager, google your basic install codes.

My mother has viruses on her mac.
One of them is a win32 virus (Which i will accept, there is something like a 10% chance it was me)
The rest, there is no way they are my fault...
She's blaming me for the lot of them....
Although, its quite funny that "Macs don't get viruses", I Go about downloading crap all the time, I Barely think about viruses.
As of my scan 10 minutes ago, i have no viruses.
