Mind-controlling fungus discovered, ants turned to zombies

Postby Knoxcrest » Thu Aug 18, 2011 6:30 am

(From the national geographic site)
Originally thought to be a single species, called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the fungus is actually four distinct species—all of which can "mind control" ants—scientists announced Wednesday.

The fungus species can infect an ant, take over its brain, and then kill the insect once it moves to a location ideal for the fungi to grow and spread their spores.

All four known fungi species live in Brazil's Atlantic rain forest, which is rapidly changing due to climate change and deforestation, said study leader David Hughes, an entomologist at Penn State University.

Hughes and colleagues made the discovery after noticing a wide diversity of fungal growths emerging from ant victims, according to the March 2 study in the journal PLoS ONE.

"It is tempting to speculate that each species of fungus has its own ant species that it is best adapted to attack," Hughes said.

"This potentially means thousands of zombie fungi in tropical forests across the globe await discovery," he said. "We need to ramp up sampling—especially given the perilous state of the environment."

Alright, let's recap. Appearantly there's some mind-controlling fungal species that is growing on ants, siezing control of the body, and forcing them to do their bidding. A rather compelling discovery to say the least.

So, let's ask ourselves a question. Could this fungi evolve and become capable of infecting larger animals? Could it possibly begin to become a danger to more species of insects and other animals?

Hoho, good pun.

Yes but if it tries it on with people or our livestock then it had better be dioxin and napalm resistant if it wants to live.

Oh yeah, and it was from late March early June I think...

Not exactly recent, but still...rencent enough.

We're all doomed!

Nah, but this is pretty old news. And it would be very unlikely for such a group of fungi to move beyond the same genus of ants and to infect different insects in the same way.

I could see it progressing to infect something other than the average ant, given some time.

Maybe not anything large.

Appearantly ants aren't the only victim, wasps are prone as well.

All insects are affected by various fungal afflictions.
However, I doubt that the fungus infecting that wasp is of the 'mind-controlling' kind.

We've already got our own mind-control fungi. They're called computers.

Also, this would make for a great biological weapon.

This would be a fail bio weapon.

First, we find a way to advance the growth AND to implemet the fungi with objectives. How the hell do we accomplish that?.

Second, we get it to where it's going.

Third, it makes it to the person's brain.

Fourth, what exactly does the person do?
