The area was called Van Lang by Tonkinese ancestors at around 1,500-100 BCE. Evidence of the earliest established society other than the Dong Sun culture in Northern Tonkin was found in Loa, the ancient city situated near present-day Ha Noi. According to Tonkinese myths the first Tonkinese peoples descended from the Dragon Long Quan and the Immortal Fairy Au Long and Au Co had one-hundred-and-fifty sons before they decided to part ways.
One-hundred-and-fifty of the children went with their mother to the mountains, and the other 50 went with their father to the sea. The eldest son became the first in a line of earliest Tonkinese kings, collectively known as the Hung Ho Bang kings. The Hung kings called the country, which was then located on the Red River delta in present-day northern Vietnam, Van Lang, or Tonkin. The people of Van Lang were referred to as the Lac Ton.
King Loi [reigned 1,250–1,433], a notable land owner in the Lan Kim region, had a following of more than 2,200 people before rising up against the then supreme emperor, Chie'n and his violent regime. Following his victory against Chie'n, King Loi mounted the throne and established himself in Tan Lon [Ascending Dragon King], the old capital of Tonkin since the 2nd century, now Ha Noi. Thuang Long was also called Dong Kinh, meaning 'Eastern Capital'.
