American Paranormal Society Chapter One: In the Eyes of God

Postby Nationstatelandsville » Sat Jul 23, 2011 12:41 am

"In the eyes of God, we are but ants. Insignificant. Even the greatest among us are just stubborn roaches to our Lord."
Benjamin Hart, founder of the New England Paranormal Society, circa June 1803, two months before his assassination

August 23rd, 2011

Oliver sighed, glancing at his watch. He was ten minutes late, again. And he was still twenty minutes away from Franklin Avenue. The big guy was going to kill him this time, he knew it. And in the APS, when a member says the boss is going to kill them, they mean it literally eight times out of ten. The other two times they suffer a horrible torture first. He strolled down the city streets, searching for the subway the whole time. If he was going to be late anyways, why rush?

He eventually happened upon the subway and took it to Franklin Avenue, arriving within five minutes. The problem was not the trip, but the intense security protocols. The Franklin Avenue Building, a warehouse that was (appropriately) the only building on it's small street seemed normal enough. Housed within it though, was the greatest secret in human history. The American Paranormal Society, protecting the nation from the supernatural for 210 years. And what a joy it was to participate in it.

He soon arrived, and after kissing the secretary's ass, he was able to get his new assignment despite the delay. It was simply a black manila envelope containing some papers, but it apparently took A LOT of work and bureaucracy to acquire it. So they would have you believe anyways. Oliver found a bench outside the warehouse and searched through the files, discovering that three out of the seven papers were a list of students. Strange. Another two pages were procedures, another was a recommended weapons list, and way in the back was yes! The mission itself. The description read as follows:

This is a training mission. You are to lead a recruit of your choice from this list into battle against a tame mega lizard that has been set lose in a contained set made to look like a mountain town. The trainee believes this mission to be genuine.

He sighed. He hated training missions, especially against the Godzilla-esque mega lizards. Any idiot who had seen a monster movie knew how to bring one down, especially when everything has been set up for them. He sighed again and began scanning the recruit list.

Nicholas had been laying in his bed within the Franklin Avenue building, gazing up at the cieling, pondering his thoughts for a moment, enjoying this quiet, subdued time of the day. He had prepared for his imminent assignment, as he was informed that he faced the possibility of being used in a hunt for the first time. As he slowly closed his eyes, a child like voice broke into his mind, followed by a girlish giggle.

"Hi Nicholas" the voice said as he opened his eyes and sat up, observing "Little Ghost Girl," who claimed her name was "Elizia" when she was a living being. She looked to be from the victorian era, being garbbed in an elegant dress for all young girls at the time.

"You're seriously gonna follow me here too?" he said, sitting up. The girl had followed him nearly everywhere he spent extended periods of time at, and he'd grown accustomed to it.

"Yep!" she replied defiently, with another giggle. The blueish aura that surrounded her ghostly figure flashed for a minute, as she took a seat next to him. She hadn't changed at all ever since he first met her, but Nicholas had changed his appearance dramatically, the effects of aging obviously.

"You realize I've kind of outgrown you, no? As I recall, you attempted to kill me over this." he said with a smirk. Truthfully, he'd also grown accustomed to the defiance of the girl, it was almost like having a child...only...not alot of people could actually see her...and she didn't need taken care of.

"Yeah, sorry about trying to kill you." she said, looking up at him.

"I'm not exactly saying sorry would cut it." he said, returning the gaze.

The girl then looked up with a smile. "Hey, if you get killed in your new work, you can come live in my place!" she said excitedly.

"Well, I'm glad to see you hope I die."

Simon awoke to what appear to be another day of monotonous book work since most of his physical training had been completed in the military he was stuck learning with the books. He got up and got dressed into his typical fatigues laced up his boots and walked to the classroom he would be in this day. He looked around and sat down in a seat near the back of the class. In the Military he had been a weapons specialist he worked with all kinds of weapons including the experimental railguns that he continued to carry. While he waited for the teacher arrived he got out his notebook and reviewed his notes on the various creatures and methods of killing and or detaining them he was determined not to fail yet another test.

Bruce awoke from yet another night full of horrifying dreams. Cities built entirely out of bone, the smell of burning flesh, and worst of all the eerie silence that accompanied the otherwise hellish landscape. These had been the only dreams Bruce had ever known he had never told a single soul about his dreams. He felt that revealing this would portray him as weak or incompetent.

As he sat up in his bed he heard the sounds of life. Apparently he was not the first one to awaken at Franklin Avenue. Bruce grabbed a nearby table clock and checked the time. Oh, my god. I can't believe how long I've slept. Nearly 20 hours. As he thought about it, it made sense he had just swept through an entire den of vampires. Bruce proceeded to place the clock on his bedside table and rise to his feet and stretch out his aching muscles.

He took a look around the room he had been given in order to rest between assignments. The walls were bare save for a poster reminding him of the best exit route in case of a fire. Next to his bed on the table sat the clock and next to it a picture of him as a young child standing next to a older bearded man, his adoptive father the late Dr. Belicer. Bruce took a long look at the picture remembering the days he had spent with the Dr. before he had been recruited to the APS. But, it was pointless the Dr. was gone and he was an agent now, he had a job, nay a calling to keep the "normal" world separate from the "paranormal" world. Bruce strode over to the dresser which sat next to the door. He removed a t-shirt, a jacket and a pair of jeans.

After tying his shoes Bruce stepped out of his room and into a hallway. He looked up and down the hallway finally, deciding against eating in the mess hall. That was one of the first things he learned while in training, if at all possible avoid APS food. Bruce decided that the best option was to simply relax in the assembly hall and wait for his next assignment.

Austin ran outside. He was excited about joining the APS. He was halfway down the block, when he realized he had forgotten to put on a shirt. He went back inside, and put on a Corre shirt. He then ran to the APS, ready for some action. He walked into the building and waited.

The secretary nodded at Austin, though she preferred him much more without a shirt.

"Mr. Stevens, I have a mission assignment for you."

She pulled out a black portfolio and passed it to him.

"You also have a meeting with Mister Grey at 3 o' clock."

The secretary nodded, secretly growling at the agent. She pushed a button to activate her intercom, which she could tune in to any building in the APS through magic. She accessed the Lincoln Institution's systems and left a message.

"Mr. Moore, please head to your closest teleportation disc and arrive at the Franklin Avenue Building as soon as possible. Thank you."

Austin went outside and sat on the steps. He opened the portfolio, said a small prayer, then began reading. It was only two papers. One was a list of procedures, another the mission assignment:

"A meeting point of two dimensions, ours and one of this universe's hells, has been located in a woman's basement in Atlanta. Your job is to seal the portal before any demons can emerge from it. Use the Dimension Kit for this. Your partner will be weapons expert, Simon Moore."

Simon looked around the room confused but did as he was ordered he mumbled to himself

"Well this is a little odd...Wait what am i saying this whole place is weird."

He headed to the teleportation disk down the hall, he stepped on the disc and punched in his desired location. In seconds he was at the Franklin Avenue building. he stepped off the disc and put out a hand onto the wall to steady himself he had not acclimated to teleportation yet and often times it made him sick. Once he felt better he walk over to the secretary's desk and said

"Simon Moore reporting Ma'am."

He saluted sharply.

Nico walked into the APS headquarters at the Franklin Avenue building. "Now that I've got my stuff..." he muttered, looking around quickly, then continued. "Time to find out what the mission is this time." He walked slowly towards the secretary.

"Well.. Alright, let me stop by my house. It's right around the corner." he said.

Nico grabbed it, for a second seeing the world warp, then shook it off. "Thanks." He quickly leafed through the folder, wondering what he needed to do this time. He walked over to a seat near the corner of the room and sat down, as his dream from last night recurred for a moment, and suddenly things from past the world were pulling themselves... No. Just a dream. Mission is what counts.
Fuck. he thought to himself, then turned and looked over to the teleport pads, getting ready to head to Vienna Beach. This one is going to suck... He continued thinking though.
