What's the deal with country music??

Postby Super Pie Lords » Fri Jul 22, 2011 7:54 am

Yesterday, I was listening to country music in my car at a stoplight with my windows down. This guy blaring rap out of his car pulled up beside me and said "Man, turn that &#%$ off". It got me thinking why so many people don't like country music. In May, one of my friend's sons was listening to country music on the bus and someone told him that country was "stupid" and that he needs to start listening to "real" music. It's not like country music is talking about rape, drugs, and murder. When you turn on a country music radio station, you could easily go through an hour without hearing a single curse word. It doesn't inspire anyone to kill themselves or anyone else. I dunno, maybe I'm just venting my problems :/

A lot of it is just really unpleasant. Also consider that most country music comes from the US, specifically the southern US. Imagine an accent you hate, and then imagine a genre of music that revolves around that accent.

Yes.

Unless of course it's not OK for a woman to ask for a female to ask for a female officer to carry out body checks. In which case, the answer would be no.

Some people have a problem with fans of genres of music they don't like. It's not really anything to do with that genre of music.

For any genre of music, the most widely known examples of it are usually the 'lowest common denominator' ones that are usually very simplistic, poorly done, or not actually representative of the genre as a whole. However, as they are the most widely known examples, they are what non-fans of the genre know. If these examples, as is usually the case, are average or worse, non-fans will invariably get a negative perception of the overall genre. Next time someone tells you that country is "shit" or "stupid", ask them if they like Johnny Cash or Elvis (strong country influences there). Or point out that many mainstream acts of the 60s and 70s (everyone from the Rolling Stones to Ray Charles to the Bee Gees) were influence by country at some point.

Then don't listen to it. But also don't force the rest of us to listen to your music. (And that's not directed specifically to you, but in general to everyone who complains about someone else's choice in music.)

Incidentally, Johnny Cash was one of the original "rappers," since a rap is simply rhythmic chanting of words to musical accompaniment. "I've Been Everywhere," "One Piece At A Time," and several other songs of his feature rap.

Doesn't inspire anyone to kill themselves? Have you ever listened to country music?

It seemed as if the person listening to there rap music believed it was the music of "RACIS AS HONKY AS CRACKAS". I for one would have bugged the hell out if someone insulted my music like that.

The reason why is because it is imperialist. It is, but so is rap.

Thanks. I'm not really a fan of sweeping generalizations. Characterizing all "rednecks" as violent, ignorant, et cetera is no different from calling all Jews greedy, or calling all Asians math whizzes, in my eyes.

which is one of the reasons I <3 Country Music!
it just seems to be a deeper and more emotional genre than some of the others,
some are sad stories you can relate to (taylor swift), some are fun as hell and remind you of your own life (toby keith) and some tell heartwarming, tragic, or religious stories.

please note, the above are just my opinions and such.

Honestly, I could care less about Taylor Swift songs, but Toby Keith is definately my favorite artist.

That's funny, because gangstas and rednecks actually have a lot more in common than either would care to admit.

That said, I don't think there's "good" and "bad" genres, but good and bad in all genres. I like to listen for the good in all kinds of music, and find it in what each does well. The enemy of country isn't rap, the enemy of good country is bad country, the enemy of good rap is bad rap, and so on. I'll listen to Johnny Cash and Ice T back to back without a problem at all. But Garth Brooks and Vanilla Ice alike you can keep to yourself.

It's just about personal taste. Personally I can't stand country music, and think that a cat in heat makes a better sound than country music. However, not everyone will love Alternative rock like I do. We like, what we like.

It's a widely known fact that country is objectively the most terrible genre of music around. Along with rap, disco, easy listening, techno, emo, screamo, ska, dubstep, hip-hop, trance, metal, pop, rock, jazz, classical, Tuvan throat singing, electronica, opera, showtunes, gamelan, folk, ragas, industrial, reggae, avant-garde, noh, flamenco, gregorian chant, house, R&B, J-pop, K-pop, S-pop, C-pop, soundtracks, punk, funk, pfunk, glam neoclassical rockabilly deathcore, fusion, polka, military marches and anything involving panpipes. Just ask any internet messageboard, really.

Depends what you mean by country music. I like a lot of the folky stuff from the '70s, but the modern stuff is mostly annoying twangy crap.
