Your nation's track gauge

Postby Hippostania » Sun Jun 26, 2011 4:38 am

The title says it all. What track gauge do your country's railways use?
Hippostania uses standard gauge, or 1,435 mm (4 ft 8½ in).

The rail service of the People's Republic also follows standard gauge, for the simple fact that it is common and 'standard'.

Some high-speed and heavy-loading tracks use 1600mm gauge track.

1435mm, like all other civilised nations. Certainly not "4 ft 8½ in", whatever that is.

The Unified Common uses the common Stephesons Gauge (thats standard gauge) of 4 ft 8½ in (1,435 mm).

It is often referred to as the 'Four Foot Way' by railway workers.

The Molgravian State Railway Company utilises two gauges of track. The first, for internal passenger travel, is the supremely comfortable 5' 6" gauge. The second, for goods travel and transport to foreign countries, is the international standard of 4' 8 1/2".

our industrial trains use 30 ft train gauges, it sounds stupid to everyone but not for us however as we transport many weapons and cargo, we can transport more material per trip with such large trains. our power source is petrusite and solar energy which we can easily retrieve from our hot environment. the trains are supported by magnets, allowing it to levitate and move without touching the rails. however, because the trains are still large, the speed is still hindered.

The standard inter-provincial passenger and freight gauge for Xanicean trains is 1,435 mm (much like the rest of the world). Metropolitan lines utilize the more compact 1,067 mm gauge, as comfort is not a priority and much of the metropolitan/zoned areas are packed with buildings and traffic, making it harder to run larger-gauge trains in the area. Finally, mountain train lines which undertake the coal, oil, and lumber runs utilize 600 mm gauge. Though quite narrow, the 600mm gauge requires less space to build, a huge deciding factor when creating mountain trains (which often follow the narrow cliffs that curve up mountains). Also, mountain train lines tend to move more slowly and have wider turns, with the average speed of a mountain train running around 40 km/hr (inter-provincial speeds average around 96 km/hr and metropolitan lines average around 65 km/hour).

The subways, which are the only trains in Frenequesta to use a conventional two-rail track, uses the 1600 mm gauge.

The national railway network in Udema is built to 1,435 mm or standard gauge. There are also some private narrow gauge lines, 50 km in metre gauge and 83 km in 750 mm gauge. The tram and light rail networks in our major cities are built to either metre or standard gauge. For example, Springfield trams are metre gauge, Nääsville light rail is standard gauge.

Most of YellowApple's intra-component rail systems have 1.435 meters between the inside edges of the individual rails. All rail systems have a single monorail track in the center for public transit trains, and some high-traffic rails in industrial sectors use 1.676 meter separation alongside 1.435 meter separation in a dual-gauge configuration, resulting in a total of three different gauges on the same track. The wider tracks are used primarily for heavy loading. On rare occasions, 1 meter gauges are used, especially for light materials transportation or localized passenger systems in specific districts, although monorails tend to serve this purpose more often.

Really, the selection of a specific track gauge is arbitrary, as not only are most passenger trains monorails, but nearly all train cars in use on YellowApplan railways have on-the-fly variable gauge axle systems to accommodate a variety of different track gauges. This makes YellowApplan rail vehicles popular for track systems with non-standard gauges, as a single car can adjust between 0.75 and 2 meters with extreme ease.

CL's rail gauge is the standard 1,435mm, regardless of whether it's the national rail system or the various underground/tramway systems.
Please note: Central Lothian is the direct successor to Mid Lothian*. As a result, I am still called Rebecca, I am still a Grammar Nazi and most information pertaining to ML also applies to CL (although I will be taking this time to change a few things).

* - And I may refer to the country as Mid Lothian. If I do, assume that I mean Central Lothian. (And not to be confused with "Midlothian" - I'm using that as a fascist version of CL.)
