Re: Games of the IV Olympiad—roster thread

Postby Quintessence of Dust » Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:28 pm

This post provides information about the Quintessence of Dust Olympic Delegation and may be subject to infrequent revisions. You can also check out our NSwiki page.

Nation: The Democratic States of Quintessence of Dust, The Green and Pleasant Region of Wysteria
Adjective: Quodite (informal), Quintessential (formal)
TLA: QOD
Kit: While outfits obviously vary by sport, most will be grey and black, with republican blue as a third colour. Notwithstanding the fact the NSOC might disapprove, all uniforms will feature a small pink emblem to raise awareness of breast cancer.
National anthem: The comas induced by playing the national anthem at the Winter Olympics have meant it has been dropped. Instead, "Crying" by Madison Violet will be played if any athletes win gold medals, to great confusion and without any apparent sense of irony.

Olympic Organization: Quintessential Olympic Association (QOA - or whatever doesn't clash with Qazox)
Secretary General: Dr Jose Guatemala de Salvador von Salvador san Salvador el Salvador con Calvador
Previous Games: 0 summer, 1 winter (IV)
Delegation Chief of Staff: Ye T'ien (former Director!!! of Energy at Wow! Health & Fitness Club)

Athletes: 549 individual athletes form 500 entries for 291 events in 25 sports.
Past experience: Although the country has never competed in a Summer Olympics before, some of its team have had limited international exposure (note to self: insert hilarious nudity joke here).
  • Samantha Benson and Lupo Korainnen competed at the Winter Olympics and also coached the DBC squad
  • Mathias Hedlund has been a reserve for the national rugby team
  • The water polo team won silver at the 2nd Qazoxian Sports Festival
  • Sprinter Heintje Kristofferson has occasionally been used as a specialist pinch runner by the national baseball team
  • Middle distance runner Arsi Sandell and - possibly? - some others have been noted for their football skills in the domestic leagues
  • Thrower Kaarlo Hautaniemi and cyclist Tom Gruenwald played for the national ice hockey team at the recent World Cup
  • Julius Sundberg and Raine Kauniainen both competed in the Tour de Qazox, winning one stage each
  • The field hockey team has played in two World Championships, albeit it in mixed format
  • A couple of the tennis players and one volleyball team also competed at the QSF
  • Most of the tennis players have competed in international tournaments before; the Ströms won the most recent Open title

Flag bearer (opening): Vanessa Chung (badminton)
Flag bearer (closing): TBD

Details of qualifying can be found in this post.

Both teams come from the Quintessential-Finnish community; positions are marked but realistically the hitters can swap positions pretty freely if needed - like anyone's going to RP that level of detail anyway.

RPing notes

An Blascaod Mór is a tiny nation which is proud just to represent itself on an international scale. Even a 7-0 thrashing will be deemed a success if someone who had never heard of the country before learns of it (and the local pub is good, even a clean sheet or a goal will merit a national holiday). All 143 citizens of the island will be at the tournament supporting the team and will be about as load as 143 people (minus the 17 players) can be. Neutral fans are also welcomed with open arms by the ABM support. A large number (roughly 1,500) of Sorthern Northland will also be there to support their neighbours. The nation also leads a perhaps primitive lifestyle lacking things such as roads (and therefore all forms of transport except donkey and boats), TV's, computers and electricity and the like. This is not to say they are unaware of these things and find them foreign as they can be found easily should an Islanders visit the Sorthern Northland mainland. The players will though find big city's and playing in a ground that is more than just a patch of grass a new experience. Although seeing as they've (the men's team at least) have played in a couple of World Cup qualifying games and a number of them play for the An Blascaod Mór team in the Sorthern Football League they might be used to proper football grounds by now.

With the recent announcement of the Tirkanese Olympic Team roster, we are designating our top runner, Giovanni Genovese, as our flag bearer. The National Anthem of Tirkana is Hail to Thee, Tirkana. Available from most good music stores today.

Re: Games of the IV Olympiad—roster thread

Postby Candelaria And Marquez » Sun Aug 23, 2009 1:55 pm

Nation: The Republic of Candelaria And Marquez
Adjective: Candelariasian
Really?: Uh-huh.
Really, though?: Yeah. But if it makes you happier, other options include Candlearisian, Candalian, Candlearian, Canderlian, Cadelarian, Canderlari, Candelaris, Candelbran, Candelbrese and Candelalalian. As you please.
TLA: CAM. Not to be confused with COM, who’re the hosts an’ everything.
Kit: Variations upon a theme of navy blue with lush green lumpy bits, with baggy shorts for the fellas and teensy tiny knickers for the ladies. Apart from the Muslim ones.
National anthem: “O, Sweet Nation”, a deeply forgettable offering that’s highly unlikely to be heard more than once or twice anyway, thank God. The second verse is likely to be chopped for brevity’s sake, which is unfortunate given that it contains the only bit of good, honest smut on offer during these tedious medal ceremonies.
Roster format: Unashamedly nicked from our Quintessential pals.

Olympic Organisation: Candelarias Olympic Committee & Candelaria And Marquez Athletics Organisation (COCAMAO).
Chairman: Tom Flowers
Previous Games: 1 summer, 2 winter

Athletes: Discounting exhibition events; 250 entries for 176 events in 23 sports. God knows how many actual athletes. Do you want to count? You can count if you want to, I don’t mind. Gowon. COUNT, MOTHERHUBBARD.
Officials: Approximately 400, comfortably outnumbering the athletes themselves. Many wear dark glasses, don’t smile an awful lot, and generally don’t appear to have a great deal of interest in sporting pursuits.
Travelling supporters: Few in number compared to many other modestly proportioned teams, the Candelariasians will generally keep themselves to themselves and pop up to lustily cheer on their countryfolk at the events they have particular interest in – association football, inevitably, there’s-always-the-field-hockey, badminton, tennis, horsey stuff, pre-pubescent girls’ gymnastics, women’s volleyball and, of course, bocce.

General demeanour: Affable, excited but nervous to be travelling overseas for probably the first time in their lives, unwilling to be ridden by strangers but typically swayed by a bag of their favourite oats.

As for the humans, Candelariasian athletes will go short on jingoistic tubthumping, those unnecessary little jiggles before races, and whopping gold crucifixes (apart from the afro-Caribbean ones, obviously), and are unlikely to be found getting riotously drunk and starting fights in discos (apart from the Northlandish ones, obviously. And the korfball team, poor things) or in foreigners’ beds. Unless you really want.

Flag bearer (opening): Bianca Forkel (trampolining)
Flag bearer (closing): TBA

General RP Permissions: Anything. For the love of God, anything.

TEAMS

Men’s Association Football Team

Ancil Liebeskind, fresh from leading the C&M under-21s to somewhere-or-other, no idea, final, first-round exit, who can say, mumble mumble at the 11th Di Bradini Cup, takes charge of this motely bunch. Good for him.

Sooo… Probably a 3-5-2, maybe, and something like Becker – Archer, Stewart, Cummins – Tekeste, Zoric, Nakatsuru, O’Airmeadhaigh, Randjelovic (c) – Macanás and Williams.

20. Luís Sáez, 23, Striker, Marquez-Onwere

Women’s Association Football Team

Former Ariddia international Naoki Tonnelier, a C&M resident since the age of nineteen and former manager of Ironside-Talinger, takes this role – assembling a squad of one or two genuine CMSC1 stars, a whole lot of squad players, and some random vets from Jeruselem. For some reason.

The starting XI, a 5-4-1, is likely to look something like… Giménez – Nichutin, Money, Döpper, Kennedy, O’Rourke – Nicholls (c), Plowman, Young, Jenkins – Page. It’s bloody defensive.

22. Adeliz Giménez, 22, Goalkeeper, Cathedral City, Starting Goalkeeper

10. Amy Idle, 21, Forward, Radyukevich CSC

Men’s Water Polo Team
