Talath Romina wrote:Aglarost, Talath Romina
A cold wind blew across the plain, as often it did in the last gasps of winter. Spring was coming, and soon the birds would sing in the trees, and the flowers would bloom into a beautiful panoply of colors. Pulling his cloak a little closer to keep out the chill, the King could hardly enjoy the thought of the fleeing of the poor weather. Talat Romina, while blessed with a generally fair climate, was beset with more than a few rather serious problems at the moment. The goblin tribes in the mountains were once more making raids into the farming communities of the Lothnond region, after several years of relative quiet. Pirates have begun to menace the previously-safe havens along the sea, the local nobles proving entirely incapable of driving them off. Even the fair city of Aglarost, situated on a fertile plain toward the center of the country, had not been spared from the recent troubles. The previous harvest had proven less bountiful than had been initially anticipated, and some among the lower classes in and around the city had begun to run out of food. Blaming the government, as ever, roving bands had begun attacking bakeries and butchershops, stealing whatever they can, and the city guard was having great trouble keeping order in several districts.
King Michael the Second, of the House of Sirrond, knew that something had to be done to restore confidence in the Monarchy, which had been fading amongst both the nobility and the commoners. There had to be something that could remind them of the glory of Talath Romina. Perhaps even more dangerous than a lack of prestige was a lack of gold, and the Royal Treasury was very nearly empty. How, after all, could the Kingdom even hope to fight off pirates on the sea and goblin brigands in the mountains without gold to pay soldiers?
Stepping into his the Palace, he glanced across the corridor to a statue of one of his predecessors, King Robert the Northman. Staring at the worn, weathered stone, he was suddenly struck with an excellent idea. He hurried to convene the Council to discuss the possibility of commisioning the heroes of Talath Romina and the surrounding lands to retrieve something that had been lost.
An open letter of sorts, written first by the Royal Scribe, and then copied over and over again by his underlings, began to make its way around the Kingdom of Talath Romina and far beyond, beseeching the reader to gather at the city of Aglarost for a most important mission. It spoke of a vast hoard of treasure belonging to the Kingdom of Talath Romina that had fallen into the hands of a dragon several generations earlier, and promised a share of the treasure to every man willing to aid in its recovery. Just as well, it went on, the dragon was most likely dead, though the area in which the hoard lay had long since become the haunt of fierce goblin tribes.
Alright, then. So I was thinking for quite awhile of a good way to introduce a fantasy nation to NS. I tried to think of something original, but again and again my mind came back to a straight-forward quest for treasure. Instead of fighting this notion, I eventually took the low road and embraced it. Obviously, this is going to be a character RP, so we won't be sending companies of soldiers into the mountains to bring back the gold. Just one character per person.
As to magic, Talath Romina (if you hadn't guessed) is pretty strongly inspired by Tolkien, so I prefer subtler kinds of magic centering around enchanted objects and such. Of course I'm not at all opposed to the inclusion of a wizard or two, but I'd prefer we keep from turning magic into a big god-mode (i.e. turning a troll into dust without batting an eyelash). So, be reasonable, I guess.
Anyway, on to the form. It just wouldn't feel like a character RP without one.
