Whooping Cough outbreak due to lack of vaccinations

Postby Wikkiwallana » Mon Apr 18, 2011 4:00 pm

http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/282419
A private school in Virginia that, against state law, allowed students to attend without getting vaccinated had to shut down due to an outbreak of whooping cough. The district health direct has stated that the outbreak is a result of lack of vaccinations. Despite this, the school is still allowing students to return without getting vaccinated as long as they take antibiotics.

Personally, I find this unacceptable. The school may be small, only 45 students, but this is needlessly endangering just so their parents won't throw a hissy fit. Vaccinations are safe and effective, but they lose some of that effectiveness if enough people aren't vaccinated to develop herd immunity. Whooping cough can kill kids, as can several other vaccine preventable diseases that were once rare but now on the rise again thanks to lack of vaccination. Confirmed cases of whooping increased 72% between 2009 and 2010 in Virginia, according to the article, and is also on the rise nationally. Way to risk your kids' lives people.

This or at least honorable mentions. Seriously there's no reason not to get the vaccination. Just a quick needle in the arm and your set. As for them justhanding the kids antibiotics rather then vaccinations, that's how you get superbugs. Just kill the weak ones by handing away antibiotics liberally.

People who endanger others are in fact explicitly barred.

Edit: Hanlon Awards seems a bit less provocative and a bit more apropos.

Parents should have the right to not vaccinate their children and once a child is old enough to choose for themselves it should be the choice of the child.

The state should not force medical procedures on people without their consent.

The individuals who choose not to get vaccinated took that risk. They knew the risk and decided not to get vaccinated anyway.

It absolutely does. It's no ones fault when one gets sick with a contagious disease unless released as a weapon. A virus is a virus.

This^ There's really no downside to getting vaccinated other then a little sore on your arm.

But it is your fault if you allow yourself to get infected by not being vaccinated and then spread the virus. Its not your fault you got it. But its your fault its spreading.

Bull frigging crap. I'm not going to die because you took a dumbass risk. You do that with any other activity it's called negligent homicide, but when a little needle is involved suddenly it's freedom of choice? Fuck that nonsense.

Sweet, I can start dumping all those disease-ridden corpses into the water supply. It's okay I'm not using them as a weapon.

Yes. And the school also has the choice to accept or not accept them. The school decided to accept them and the parents took that extra risk by sending their children to that school knowing there was a slightly higher chance that they would get sick as are result.

There are a multitude of choices made every day which likewise can slightly increase danger that are perfectly legal.

There should be exceptions for religious/ extreme philosophical requirements, but that should be minimal.

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.
