Becoming a socialist.

Postby The Truth and Light » Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:37 pm

This thread is serious, fyi.

Recently I decided I wanted to be a socialist. Now, I am terribly uninformed, so I thought about my beliefs and I came up with several main tenets. All people are equal. All people have the right to personal freedoms granted in the constitution. All people deserve proper support if they are in need, and all people deserve an occupation with income.

I do have plans to read up on socialism, but I want to know what NSG thinks is important about the philosophy. What main tenets must I know? Who are the best philosophers? Basically, in your opinion, which socialism is best socialism?

Socialism is so loosely defined, there are days when I wonder if any non-lazziez faire system can be described with it.

The best socialism is when it does not exist. You know, capitalism.

Best form of socialism: mutualism
Worst form of socialism: command economy (isn't even socialist in the sense of worker ownership)

Socialism has always been rather vague to me as a Economic System it has been employed with various different flavors and systems of government.

I like some parts of it, like Universial Health Care and Education. But the whole community owned thing is not something I like at all, everybody should have a right to own their own business. The best version is a mix of Capitialism and Socialism, free markets for the most part, just regulated up to wazoo and government funded saftey nets like health care, social security and free education.

I'm not that well-read on the subject, either. (fucking college impeding my learning.) But I have some general knowledge. I think Bakunin and Trotsky are some of the more popular socialist thinkers, might want to read some of their stuff.

One thing I've always wondered is whether socialists believe that socialism is one step on the road to communism, like the Soviets thought. Or if they believe that socialism itself is the goal.

But seriously, being a socialist isn't that hard. You pretty much don't read or understand economics, people, or society; you just do.

How would you go around giving all people a paid occupation? Also, would the amount of income differ per occupation?

I'm really wondering how one decides to become a socialist when one does not know what it is

What I think is important is that it inspired to emancipate the unschooled labourers of the 19th century and ensured better conditions for them. For the rest I won't comment because I don't consider myself a socialist.

You might want to consider welfare capitalism first before you consider socialism. And read the many critiques of central planning.

Not sure how I said my views were better then yours in any way. Seems to me like you are trolling pure and simple. Obvious troll is obvious. In all seriousness though there is no best socialism. Socialism has never worked well in the real world. Just face facts, its a waste of your time.

Perhaps you should research Democratic Socialism. If you live in the US, the Democratic Socialist Party is a good place to start.

Anyway, I personally believe in free-market democratic socialism; I really don't know good philosophers that I ideologically agree with.

Technically, an anarcho-mutualist or market socialist style economy would be laissez-faire in so far as the economy operates.

How so? You live in the real world no? Proof enough. Unless you were born after 1981 then I guess you do not remember the epic fail of socialism.
