History

(0-1500 AD) Prehistory
King's Reach was first inhabited around 1000 AD, by nomadic natives who arrived from the San Marini Isles. It is believed that these nomadic people were descended from mainland Nysan natives, having probably settled in the San Marini Isles around 100 BC.

They flourished in San Marini and the King's Reach peninsula, but with the arrival of large predators such as the Marsupial Lion from the other side of Marburran, brought by the recession of the barren desert that had once divided the island in half, they were decimated. It is theorized that these predators swam the short distance to the San Marini Isles, also decimating the population of nomads there. By the time the settlers arrived to found Kingborough, barely any trace remained of the nomads former existence.

(1500 AD-1800 AD) Foundation
Kingborough was founded in 1500 AD, by a group of colonists looking for a new life. The first [[Falsea]]nians to arrive on Marburran were the passengers of the Venture. Some six hundred people, of diverse backgrounds, were on-board and disembarked at Venture Bay, now the location of the city of Saint Martin. The colony prospered for its first fifty years, however contact with the homeland was lost in 1562 and the colony was left to survive on its own.

The second boat load of colonists arrived from Tyarchal in 1689 AD, to find a thriving community of ten thousand already established. The Victory's crew and passengers disembarked, and were welcomed heartily by the people of Kingborough. Under the governance of Tyarchal they thrived for just under ten years, but the trade lines to Kingborough were intercepted by sea born raiders and in 1703 the colony lost contact again.

However the colonist continued to thrive and fearing attack from the forces who had decimated their home land built extensive fortifications around Saint Martin, which stand to this day. Taking the advise of the most recent settlers the Most Serene Principality of Kingborough was founded on the 1st of July, 1731 AD. The first monarch, Prince Seamus I - great great great grand son of the original captain of the Venture - was enthroned the following day.

The colonies gained a reputation as bad luck in the following years, two sets of colonies having been lost, and no further colonial ventures were attempted by either Tyarchal or Falsea.

(1800 AD-1810 AD) The civil war of 1800
Kingborough, having grown large enough to consider settling its surrounding lands, had colonized the tiny San Marini Isles in 1751 AD. However, due to slow communications and the fact that many of the more troublesome members of society decided to join the settlement, a growing gap began to grow between the Saint Martin colony and the San Marini Isles colony.

By 1796, it had gotten so bad that some in the San Marini Isles began began clamoring for their independence from the mainland. The second prince of Kingborough, Seamus II, proposed giving some limited autonomy to San Marini, and even established a locally elected city council for the main settlement. However, it wasn't enough for the San Marinian people, and in 1800 civil war broke out.

Sparked by the sudden and suspicious death of Lord Henry Campbell, the vocal secessionist mayor of San Marini, over thousand men took arms and stormed Fort Princess Abigail in San Marini. They were successful in breaking down the meager fortifications, designed only to withstand wild animals, and then went on to slaughter the garrison of fifty.

Kingborough was ill prepared, having never fought anything worse than a Marsupial Lion or Genyornis, and the two hundred men they could muster were slaughtered on the beach at San Marin Town when they attempted to retake the islands.

Unable to take the islands by force for the next five years, when Kingborough did try again in 1805, it discovered that the San Marinian people had been hard at work training their military and building fortifications. The townsfolk simply retreated into the now well reinforced Fort Princess Abigail, and waited while the Kingboroughian men fruitlessly attacked the walls. Eventually, the Kingboroughian military was chased away by the hail of arrows that the San Marinians cast down on them, and they retreated back to the mainland.

It took until 1810 for a formal treaty to be signed, recognizing the independence of San Marin, but no more battles took place after the failure at Fort Princess Abigail.

Recent history
Kingborough first recontacted the world on the 2nd of January 1901, when a Tyronian naval vessel stumbled upon the island of Marburran. Diplomatic relations were swiftly established, and the Tyronians sailed away peacefully to report to the President on the unknown island they had discovered - with a nation of westerners already inhabiting it. Tyrone[fn1] returned in 1902, and established the first embassy between Kingborough and a foreign nation.

Through trade with Tyrone, Kingborough managed to catch up to the rest of the world technologically, and it enjoyed a peaceful 'golden age'. However, in 1952 Tyrone fell suddenly and the principality was forgotten about again; it wouldn't be until 1982 that Kingborough would be remembered again when someone noticed from satellite imaging that their was a city - Saint Martin - located on Marburran. Kingborough truly entered the world stage at this time, finally opening diplomatic relations with other nations.

The burning of the Royal Palace in 2000 was the first act of terrorism in Kingborough's history, and was committed by Jack Burnes. He claimed that he was "fighting the tyranny of the Princes", and he was to be the first of what is now a widespread anti-monarchist movement; a connected series of terrorist attacks took place during 2012, targeting the Prince. The perpetrator was arrested and tried by the International Criminal Court, but was released free on an administrative error. In 2012 Kingborough entered the Nysa supranational organization.

Following the Kingboroughian Civil War in October 2012 which was sparked by Prince Iosac II going insane and dismissing Parliament following their objection to actions taken by the Prince against the Duchess Anastasia. The government of the Principality was later overthrown by his daughter Princess Edana who assumed the title of Archduchess Edana I upon her crowning.

Geography and climate

Image
Kingborough and San Marin, on the Island of Marburran

Marburran's landmass of 2030km2 is located off the coast of the continent of Nysa. It is surrounded by the Mirovia Oean on three sides, with the fourth side facing the continent across the Strait of Marburran. The island has a semi-mountainous landscape, especially in the islands center - with the tallest mountain being Mt Victory at 1501 metres. Kingborough itself encompasses most of the entire island, while San Marin occupies the neighbouring San Marinese Islands.

The only remnant of a small and now submerged subcontinent that broke off from the continent of Nysa in the early stone age, Marburran has a unique climate and is the last known place that animals such as the Marsupial Lions and Diprotodon can be found. In previous ages, the island was split by a small dessert that finished receding in the 1200's, but which has left behind a grassy interior and created a slightly lusher belt on the coastline - where human habitation is centered. The continued climate change of Marburran has become a contentious issue for Kingborough, as Marburran's unique fauna is at risk of dying out as the colder climate of the neighbouring continent creeps in.

Environment and fauna
Marburran is home to many species which once roamed far and wide but which are now long extinct elsewhere. With an dry plains climate, and masses of grass and small shrubbery and trees spread lightly across much of the island, animals such as the sheep-sized echidna relative the Zaglossus hacketti have managed to cling onto survival here, giving rise to Kingborough's thriving tourist sector.

Government and politics

Kingborough is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, with a bicameral legislation made up of the House of Lords and House of Commons, each house consisting of 300 seats; The House of Commons is elected by the people every four years, and each member represents their local electoral region. Presently 75% of the members of the House of Lords are selected by the Archduchess, and the 25% of seats are reserved for the representatives of each religion practiced in Kingborough, with the number of seats delegated to each decided by the number of believers of that religion in Kingborough at the most recent census. Each house has 300 members.

The Archduchess of Kingborough holds extensive powers, able to dissolve parliament, call elections, select the Captains Regent and veto acts of parliament. However the last use of these powers by the former Prnce Iosac II led to widespread anti-monarchy sentiment, protests against the "tyranny of the Prince", two terrorist attacks and a civil war.

Administrative Divisions
Traditionally Kingborough's regions have been governed by hereditary Dukes who passed upon the position of governor to their eldest child. However in 2002 Prince Iosac II formally abolished hereditary governance and established elective regional governments following pressure by several rights groups and the wider populace, leading to the establishment of a system of Dukes and Duchesses elected for life by the people.

The modern duchies of Kingborough themselves were first established in 1854, and named by decree of the Prince after the homelands of the original settlers of Kingborough, the only exception being the duchy of Saint Martin, named after the capital city that sits within its borders. In 2012 three new duchies were added after the uninhabited 2/3rds of Marburran was annexed by Kingborough and the borders of the existing duchies modified slightly, however following the Kingboroughian Civil War the three new duchies were merged into the original duchies of Nova Scotia and Nua Eire.

In the hierarchy of Kingborough's federated government, after Duchies are wards and boroughs; each city, town or village in Kingborough is either a Borough or Ward depending on their population. Towns with over a thousand people are Boroughs, and are managed by a Mayor elected every four years while towns with less than a thousand people are Wards and are run by a Warden, a man or woman responsible for maintaining their assigned town's infrastructure and public services and who is appointed by the Duke.

The cities of Saint Martin and Saint Charles have special status as Royal Boroughs and are managed by the two Lord Mayors, who while elected like a normal mayor and holding the normal powers of a mayor have the additional status as a Member of Parliament for - essentially granting Saint Martin and Saint Charles an additional seat each in the House of Commons on top of their normal MPs.

Royal Family

Main article: House Ó Riain

The present ruling family of Kingborough is House Ó Riain, who are descended from the captain of the ship which brought the first settlers of Kingborough to Marburran. The house currently consists of the family matriarch Archduchess Edana I, her husband Prince Nicholas of Sovreignry, her sisters Lady Keena Ó Riain Countess Snow, Lady Finola Ó Riain Countess Tabitha, and the Princely Mother Lady Abaigeal and the Princely Grandmother Lady Caitríona.

Foreign Relations

Kingborough's first contact with the rest of the world was through the nation of Tyrone, but following Tyrone's destruction Kingborough fell back into isolation. It is only in recent times that Kingborough has begun to actively take part in international diplomacy.

Kingborough is a member of the Union of Celtic States, Nysa, and currently has embassies in the Republic of the Nineteen United Provinces, Triquoland, Rennersia and the Dual Monarchy of Holy Trek-Inuyashina.

As a tax haven, Kingborough also has many trading relations via foreign corporations who have set up branches in Kingborough. Kingborough also has a policy of openly receiving political asylum seekers, and does not take extradition requests for foreign criminals who have taken refuge in Kingborough.

San Marin
San Marin is a special case diplomatically for Kingborough, as it was the only other nation in Kingborough's locality for a long time. The civil war of 1800 is still a topic of contention between Kingborough and San Marin, but relations have been amicable in recent times. Each nation has an embassy in the others capital, and a visa-free travel zone is present between the two nations. Additionally, the Treaty of Saint Martin is still in effect to this day, and prohibits any military action by either party against the other, while recognizing each's sovereignty and assuring that each will always defend the other against any attempted conquest. Other similar treaties also grant San Marin various accesses to Kingborough military technology and assistance in times of need.

Economy

Kingborough's economy is built upon its four largest economic sectors, financial services, automobile and arms manufacturing, and tourism. The national economy has specifically been designed and tailored as a tax haven since Kingborough's reentry to the world, with nearly nil tax on business, although standard residential and civilian taxes apply. Along with a world class banking system that is renowned for its security and anonymity, this has developed and grown Kingborough's economy swiftly.

As of January 2012, Kingborough has a Gross Domestic Product of $50,426 billion, and GPD per capita of $80,489.

Demographics

With a population of 191,102, as of the 2012 census, Kingborough is a small and sparsely populated nations with the bulk of its population (roughly 100,000) located in the colony of Kartonia. Additionally around 3,000 foreign citizens are present in the metropolitan area of Kingborough at any time. The largest city of Kingborough is Saint Martin, with a population of 51,223. Saint Martin is followed by Saint Charles, the second largest city with a population of 23,250, and the third largest being Saint Bernadette with 7,456. The majority of the people of Kingborough are of British descent, and the population is made up of 45% English, 24% Irish, 9% French, 8% Breton, 5% Scottish, 3% Welsh, 2% Russian, 1% Dutch, 1% Jewish and 1% Other.

Religion
74% of the population professes to adhere to one of the many sects of Christianity, with the largest section of Christians (34%) being Protestants. 2% of the population adhere to Judaism, 1% Animism and 1% Ancestor Worship. The remaining 22% of the population is either Agnostic or Atheist.

Military

Kingborough has a small military of just 5400 men. Equipped for guerrilla warfare and defense, they were never intended to go on the offensive, and mostly assist the police force in cross-regional investigations.

However, to compliment the military's defensive tactics, large scale fortifications have been constructed across Kingborough. Fortifications ranging from castles left over from the early eras of Kingborough's history, to modern military compounds, forts and nuclear bunkers dot across the country, and all citizens over 18 are required to learn how to use a rifle, a machine gun, shotgun and a pistol, and keep their government issued Glock 18 and M14 semi-automatic rifle in working order so that the government may call them up as militias at any time, or so that they may fight any invasion on their own if central government collapses.

Six border patrol ships, and one second hand battleship make up the nations navy. However the navy almost entirely spends its time catching smugglers and could only make a token effort to repel an invasion by sea.

Culture

Image
The Kingborough Parliament Building,
a nationally listed historic monument built
in the favored Gothic architectural style of the nation.

As a predominantly Anglo-Celtic nation, Kingborough has long been influenced by the traditions brought over from the homelands of its first settlers; namely, the British Isles, Ireland, France, Brittany, the Netherlands and Russia. Most of these settlers departed the homeland in the 1500s, and brought with them the holidays, sports and also architectural styles of that period.

The most prevalent sports in Kingborough are fencing, bowling, billiards, tennis and croquet; over 50% of the population regularly plays at least one of these sports, and they have become a major part of the culture of Kingboroughians. Traditional holiday's in Kingborough include Christmas, the Festival of Romance[fn2], the Celebration of Democracy[fn3], Founders Day[fn4] and National Environment Day[fn5].

The music of Kingborough has changed very slowly over the years of Kingborough's isolation, with tradition instruments such as bagpipes and the harp dominating, as well as a prevalence of choir music. Traditional folk songs are most popular, along with hymns.
The most prevalent art style has long been of realistic, detailed works, and also bold, colourful classical works depicting angels, cherubs, deities and other divine symbols. Architecture has also developed slowly, over exaggerated gothic works being the norm for public buildings, the houses of the wealthy and monuments. A plainer style developed in Kingborough and called "Simplistic Medieval" is more widely used in average houses, and it has a functional medieval style, featuring sharp edges, lots of squares, flat roofs, stone, minimal decoration, thick walls and sometimes structures akin to castle towers.

Cuisine

The most common traditional Kingboroughian meal consists of roast lamb, with assorted roasted vegetables and possibly Yorkshire Pudding and thick, rich chicken gravy. Other meals are similar, roasted meats and vegetables making up many meals; cuisine in Kingborough has always been hearty, a side-effect of the wild and rough living of the founders of the nation. Hearty stews and soups are also common, and fish is also used in meals sometimes. An average dessert may consist of a simple combination of ice-cream, with strawberry or raspberry puree or chocolate or caramel fudge topping. More complex desserts do occur, mainly in the homes of the wealthy and at high-class dinning establishments but they will always include a topping of some form.
Beverages include cider, mead, beer, water, milk, and carbonated soft drinks. Ginger beer is a popular beverage, with Kingborough containing some of the world's greatest ginger beer breweries.

Media
Kingborough has two national TV companies, the privately owned National News Now! Network and the publicly listed Royal Broadcasting Corporation of Kingborough (the RBCK). Together the two companies operate six TV channels, three radio stations, seven regional papers and one national paper.

Religion
Kingborough has a background of diverse religions, with Orthodox, Protestant, Catholic, Lutheran and Coptic churches, Jewish synagogues and even one cult of the Greek pantheon operating in the nation. However by far the most widely followed religion is Protestant Christianity, comprising 34% of the religious peoples in Kingborough. Protestantism is lead by the Church of Kingborough - of which the Prince is the head.

Other sects of Christianity, animism, ancestor worship, Greek polytheistic cults and Judaism are also small but prominent minority religious groups, with even the Cult of Ares and Athene garnering around a thousand followers.

Religion has also played a major part in Kingborough because of the basic right affirmed in the constitution that all religious groups shall receive seats in the House of Lords with the number decided by the amount of followers. As such, religion has had much to do in shaping the government of the nation.

Footnotes

[fn1] - A fictional nation, created for history purposes.
[fn2] - Similar to Valentines Day, but just a bit more extreme, the Festival of Romance occurs on the 14th of February each year and is a public holiday. Traditionally a daylong celebration, it consists of an exchange of gifts between couples during the day and a lunch of fish with boiled epimedium as a side dish. Couples then spend the afternoon procreating, as epimedium is an aphrodisiac; hence its special significance on this day. Then, that night the young singles over the age of 16 gather in the town hall for a dance at 7:00pm.
[fn3] - The Celebration of Democracy is an informal holiday where people privately celebrate the passing of the constitution of Kingborough, which ushered in democratic reform for the country. It takes place on the 15th of October each year, and normally the festivities consist of the hoisting of the Flag of Kingborough by primary or highschool school children at every town hall in the nation.
[fn4] - Founders Day celebrates the day that the first settlers landed on Marburran. It is traditionally held on the 4th of July - though the actual historic date of the landing is unknown - and is a public holiday. The Prince traditionally makes a speech on Founders Day, and a twenty gun salute takes place in both Saint Charles and Saint Martin in honour of the first settlers.
[fn5] - Founded only in 1987, National Environment Day takes place on the 4th of September each year and mourns the swiftly dying ecosystem of Marburran. All flags in Kingborough flag at half-mask on National Environment Day and a high-profile meeting of government and private officials takes place at the palace, to discuss ways that the environment could be saved.

First of all, I would like to say: nice formatting! I am looking forward to read more about your nation's In-Character history, as it is gradually upgraded over time. I love reading in-character factbook, especially about history and economy of one's roleplayed nation in the NationStates roleplaying world.

Secondly: In-Character wise, would the current government of the Principality be interested with establishing diplomatic exchange programme with the United Provinces government? The exchange programme can be in the form of a consulate, consulate-general or embassy, which will represent one's nation in another country on behalf of one's government.

OOC: Thank you. I based quite a lot of your factbook, to be honest. Though I did have a question; as you may see, my tables have all jumped down the page and have several lines of emptiness above them. Yours do not do this; what is the secret to stop my tables doing that?

Also, I hope I can do a good job of building IC history.

IC: The Principality would be most delighted to establish an embassy with the United Provinces government. We will submit an application to your embassy program immediately.

You welcome. I love reading good factbooks (although they're still new); one of my periodical hobby and (weird) routines in NationStates.

That's fine. As I've posted here, I allow everyone to copy my formatting whenever the want to do that in their leisure.

The difference: yours have space/line in-between some [tr] code (mostly at the bottom group)

Good luck. Try to look at real life history for inspiration, then after that expand it by creatively imagining your nation in your head. What do you want it to be? What is it like? Don't be shackled by too many "realistic" limitations, as that will impede your creativity, as well as ultimately making roleplay in NationStates boring in the long run.

The United Provinces government will reciprocate with the establishment of a Yohannesian embassy upon the opening of your embassy programme.

Are the people of Kingborough aware of the Tedoka's existence? If they do, what is the popular opinion regarding our nation?

(OoC: I love your factbook)

IC: Tedoka is little known, but those in Kingborough who do know about you consider Tedoka a honourable country, with peaceful intentions.

OOC: Thank you Tedoka, and also thanks Yohannes - that worked like a charm!

OOC: Updated factbook with Kingborough's new coat of arms (see infobox), the current embassies of Kingborough (Foreign Relations), a load of new misc info in the infobox and just other general tweaks.

I've seriously rewritten Geography, Climate and the introduction sections. This is partially to fit Kingborough into the regional mapping of the Humanitarian League - now Kingborough's region - and also because I decided to swap from ice-age mammals to Australian megafauna as the endangered animals who still survive in Kingborough to this day (More patriotic and their cooler to be honest 8) )

All maps in the factbook have just been updated; see the announcement regarding the annexation of Marburran for an explanation; viewtopic.php?f=23&t=173345&p=10228565#p10228565

I got your population curve if you want it.

Image

Below is the list of populations. I can adjust the curve if you want me to or if you think this isn't right. I can make your population shoot up and level off by 1550 or less. I can also have it where the population grows very slowly until it shoots up in 1700. I just put it in the dead center so your population rises and levels evenly. It won't be hard for me to change it since I still have the spreadsheet. Also, I noticed in your history a second ship stopped on the island. If you tell me the crew size i can show that as a sudden jump in population. If the crew goes higher than carrying capacity then the equation will show a famine where your population dies off back to carrying capacity. Just remember the carrying capacity of your nation could go much higher given modern technology. I set it to 45 per kilometer squared because that is the best the middle ages could offer given what land is arable.

Year Population
1500 676
1510 996
1520 1,464
1530 2,147
1540 3,139

1560 6,589
1570 9,414

1600 24,719
1610 32,351
1620 40,893
1630 49,787
1640 58,378
1650 66,094
1660 72,584
1670 77,750
1680 81,683
1690 84,578
1700 86,656
