NS Military Realism Consultation Thread #2

Postby Galla- » Fri May 25, 2012 8:35 pm

DASHES wrote:Welcome.

Come here to get your questions answered about the realism/plausibility of any aspect/unit/item/etc. of your Nation's Armed Forces.

Keep the really bulky stuff like pics and details in Spoilers, please. Also, be respectful and patient.

Of course, anyone can answer, as well as ask. It'll work something like Wiki Answers. Lets help each other.

Well that's enough. Lets learn how to improve our units. Knowing is half the battle.

post here lol

MODEDIT: If you're going to take over as OP for the new thread, at least put some goram effort into it and link to the last, as requested. It isn't about who's name is at the top. It ought to be about who honestly wants to continue an informative thread.

Also, useful link to the modern standard soldier kit.

I am looking to create a realistic MT version of my nation so I can participate in some of the MT RP since FT seems to be a barren wasteland at the moment as far as decent RP goes.

I intend to base my military off my tracker stats as follows:
Image

Is this a good start point?

And where can I go to find the approximate price tags for various pieces of military hardware which I will need to equip my armed forces?
For: Free thought, 2 state solution for Israel, democracy, playing the game.
Against: Totalitarianism, Theocracy, Slavery, Playing the system
Tech Level: FT

I agree to these glorious terms.

I was kind of wondering who was going to jump on this.

world war 2 with abrams tanks amirite

nuclear weapons have defined modernwar since the late 1940s

they are as necessary for a modern, world-class military as the bayonet and the rifleman

Depends how real you want to be. In the real world you wouldn't need nukes to be a modern powerful nation because the nations protect you by wanting no more nukes used.

Ns though you need them as a deterint because other nations won't jump to protect you if nukes start to detonate

nop.... :p

actually if your going to make claims such as

they are as necessary for a modern, world-class military as the bayonet and the rifleman

then the onus is you to source it.

modern warfare has grown up in the shadow of the bomb. yet strangely many nations focused not on developing greater and greater weapons of mass destruction but on guerrilla and insurgent tactics that undermined its effectiveness. some of these nations would go on to achieved marked sucess against armies that not only considered themselves world class, but nuclear armed.

and as always, the infantry remains the Queen of battle.

Infantry may be the queen, but artillery is the king.

We all know what the king does to the queen, etc etc etc.

Anyways, NATO vs Warsaw Pact would have been a hilariously excessive war with tacnukes being dropped everywhere with more than two guys. That's how a war between two major nuclear powers will go, which is everybody on NS where the cold war only ends when it goes hot.

nuclear weapons are traditionally considered part of the artillery branch tho

also if ussr-nato or even nato-rusfed had went to war, i dont think they'd pussyfoot around with nuclear weapons but start using them immediately

this is esp. true of pre-START and pre-INF world such as on NS

nuclear weapons are a waste in coin becuase the objective is to secure the population's confidence, not destroy the population

it's also not rly kosher to use nuclear weapons on a power that can be defeated confidently through more conventional means like iraq or panama or grenada but that is a result of current RL treaties and political climate

said political climate exists not on ns thus nuclear weapons are v. fair game tbh

You might want to distinguish between combat and non-combat personnel, as well as between active and inactive units. It takes a great deal of support units to maintain a single combat unit, and those numbers go up with the complexity of the weapons used by your forces. I've seen arguments that a single combat infantryman requires between 3 and 7 supporting personnel, so your ratio of combat troops in ground forces should be about 1:3 - 1:7. For naval units (ships being more complex than rifles and tanks) this ratio increases to 1:5-1:20 (using civillians in the merchant marine can held keep this ratio low). For air force pilots the ratio should be around 1:50 (although including static or mobile air defense batteries - guns or missiles doesn't matter - to your air force will reduce this ratio significantly).

At any rate, you should list combat strength for all branches, using these ratios as a guide. You can then determine the total number of aircraft, ships, tanks, etc used by your troops. After than, it's just number crunching while you try to determine what level of weapons systems you can operate. It's generally accepted that all nations can produce any RL weapon system themselves, without resorting to a middle-man supplier. This allows you to hand-wave older equipment as being already in your military's inventory and just pay for NS designs, rather than the entirety of your military hardware. Estimate prices for many RL designs can be found on Wikipedia or its various links (remember to adjust for inflation!). As far as NS equipment goes, check the GE&T forum - Lyras, Anemos Major, and Yohannes seem to be the dominant arms exporters at the moment, with Questers having many good ships and Mikoyan-Guryevich having some nice aircraft. The NS Draftroom is also a good spot to find cutting edge NS designs.

I think it's like the only place to find designs that aren't a million years old and long dismissed by their own creators (which in NS timescale is 2008, by the way).

P.S. Also this thread's first page sucks, congratulations.
