Frequent crashes becoming even more frequent.

Postby EvilDarkMagicians » Wed Nov 11, 2009 1:21 pm

I just wanted to say that I have noticed crashes are becoming very annoying.
Why is this happening? :(

I am not a site admin, etc etc.

But my suspicion is that it's simply becoming overloaded at particular times of day, most notably when the east-coast USians log on while the brits are still active. The old forums used to have problems with load, and I'd be extremely surprised if the new ones managed to totally escape it.

Don't forget the group of other European users, there are lots of Germans and other kinds of Europeans just 1 hour away from the Brits.

But yeah, I guess it is server load as well :(

I've noted problems the last two days, at various times - I am CST myself and am on at a wide variety of times - just now I am seeing 503 errors and I'm also being told that the search function is unavailable/ yesterday it was acting like a server overload problem repeatedly.

I'm in CST, also, and around the times of 6-8, I can hardly post due to the server lag. I'd also guess it was overload from the amount of users active/signing on/posting/etc.

It is a bit annoying, I blame it on the Americans logging on when us Brits really should have priority, first ones on should have the rights to the forum.

Bah! You can't keep it all to yourselves, ya dirty Brits!
But, anywho, you'll just have to get over the lag, it always subsides after 10-15 minutes.

Oddly enough, every time I've gotten a crash since I've made my puppet Emperor Penguin Land, I'll log back in and it'll automatically log me in on that account.

Also, almost every time I open a new NationStates page from starting up my laptop, I'm automatically logged on.

Do you have any puppet nations? I feel they might be a part of it, or maybe it's just updates/cruddy computer connectivity/cluster of log-ins.

Part of me grew up here. But part of growing up is leaving parts of ourselves behind.

Yeah. I don't have any puppet nations, but I do have a few inactive ones that I don't log onto anymore. And, you're right. The amount of people who log onto multiple Nations at the same time are probably a big part of this issue. When you have that many people with multiple nations, you really strain the server capacity.

The load has mostly been because of the growing forum: if a lot of people are on, and a few of them do server-intensive stuff at once (searching, editing long posts), we start to chug. We've just rejigged some disk stuff to hopefully make this better; if that doesn't work, we have other alternatives.

That's presumably because you have "Log in automatically" set to "yes". And logging in with puppets isn't particularly load-intensive compared to the kind of stuff [violet] was talking about.

Can't you just delete some of the older threads on general and stuff?
Or is that not taking up much bandwidth?

It's the actual usage with matters I believe, so those threads don't take put any bandwith if they're not being read or posted to or having some thing attached. I now they take up space but not bandwith (correct me if I'm wrong). The issue the forum had is a lot of people were online at once (which is amazing news) and trying to do server intensive things like attach and search at the same time.
