Geography

The United Kingdom Stefannica is an archipelago with 7 major islands, with a total land area, including inland bodies of water, of approximately 360,000 square kilometres. Stefannica has one of the longest coastlines in all of Alterra.

Most of the mountainous islands are covered in tropical rainforests and are volcanic in origin.

Situated on the western fringes of Alterra’s “Ring of Fire”, Stefannica experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity, though most of these are too weak to be felt and cause damage. There are also several active volcanoes, though not all notable geographic features are so violent or destructive.

Due to the volcanic nature of the islands, mineral deposits are abundant. The country is estimated to have one of the largest deposits of Quartz, Galena (PbSO4) and other heavy metals in the Alterran world. It is also rich in precious gems like sapphire and rubies, and emeralds. Some reserves of uranium had also been discovered in some parts of the country. Geothermal energy is another product of volcanic activity that the country has harnessed successfully, being one of the largest sources of energy, second only to Nuclear Power.

Flora and Fauna

Stefannica’s rainforests and its extensive coastlines make it home to a diverse range of birds, plants, animals, and sea creatures. It is one of the most biologically mega-diverse countries and is at or near the top in terms of biodiversity per unit area.

Stefannica’s maritime waters encompass as more than 2.2 million square kilometers producing unique and diverse marine life. Its waters also sustain the cultivation of pearls, crabs, and seaweeds

Climate

Stefannica enjoys a tropical maritime climate and is usually hot and humid. There are three seasons: the hot dry season or summer from March to May; the rainy season from June to November; and the cool dry season from December to February.
In considering temperature, location in terms of latitude and longitude is not a significant factor. Whether in the extreme north, south, east, or west of the country, temperatures at sea level tend to be in the same range. Altitude usually has more of an impact.

History

History

Polinipis were among the archipelago's earliest inhabitants but their appearance in Stefannica has not been reliably dated. They were followed by migrants from the earlier civilizations of Xia who began arriving around 4000 BCE, mixing with the older residents of the islands. By 1000 BCE, the inhabitants of the archipelago had developed into four kinds of social groups: hunter-gathering tribes, warrior societies, petty plutocracies, and maritime-centered harbor principalities.

Trade between the maritime-oriented peoples and other Xiaian countries during the subsequent period brought influences in society and culture. During this time there was no unifying political state encompassing the entire Stefannican Archipelago. Instead, the islands were divided among competing thalassocracies.



By 990 CE, 4 major kingdoms ruled the archipelago, Becu, Manoandi, Nimayla, and Pagmapan. Until 1800s CE, the kingdoms struggled for power, waging countless wars against each other to gain supremacy over the islands.

In 1814 CE, The Nabetseican explorer Jonathan Monne arrived in Stefannica and claimed the islands for the Nabetseican Empire. The Great Conquest soon followed, ending with the annexation of the four kingdoms.

From 1815 – 2010, Stefannica was split into 9 provinces, Cyberio (I), Imagna (IV), Interne Nueva Nabetse (III), Interne Nueva Sebastian (II), Nueva Felipinas (VIII), Nueva Sesillas (V), Nueva Romania (VI), “X56” (IX) and “X58” (VIII). The colonial capital was located in Nabetsepolis, Interne Nueva Nabetse.



Nabetseican rule contributed significantly to bringing political unity to the archipelago. For the first time, the entire country was united under one flag and under one government. Jonathan Monne was subsequently named First Governor-General of the new colony, which was named Stefannica, in honor of the Empress Stephanie, the empress-consort at that time.

The Nabetseican Church missionaries converted most of the inhabitants to Nabetseism and founded cities, schools and hospitals. Also, the Nabetseican form of government was introduced, however tailored to suit the state of the colony. The colonial rulers virtually made the Stefannican economy, by constructing factories, bridges, roads, dams and plants. While a Nabetseican decree introduced free public schooling in 1840, efforts in mass public education mainly came to fruition during the 20th century.

The Nabetseican colonizers maintained the isolationist policy observed earlier in Stefannica’s history. As such, not much was known by the Alterran world by the locals, save their masters who basically maintained ties with the neighbouring countries. The Technological Revolution (1830-1900s) followed by the Era of Enlightenment (1900 – 1920s) established Stefannica into a modern power, although, relations with the Alterran world was still heavily restricted leaving foreign policy to Nabetseica.

With the advent of the 21st century, the Alterran territories were slowly given autonomy. By 2011, the Stefannican colony was granted independence. The United Kingdom of Stefannica was finally created on 21 April 2011 by the Treaty of Stefannican union with the sovereignty being offered to the Nabetseican Emperor, crowned as Josh IV, First King of the United Kingdom of Stefannica.

Government and Politics

The United Kingdom of Stefannica is a theocratic-absolute monarchy. The King is the descendant of the revered All Father in Stefannican religion who took mortal form and now reigns and rules as Sovereign of the Realm. The King wields ultimate authority, being the foundation of the state, church and government. He delegates His powers to His representative, the Governor-General and to the three branches of government: the Executive the Legislative and the Judiciary, collectively known as His Majesty's Government.

The Governor-General as the King’s representative exercises the supreme power over the United Kingdom of Stefannica. The functions and roles of the Governor-General include appointing the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, ambassadors, ministers and judges, giving Royal Assent to legislation, issuing writs for elections and bestowing honours. The Governor-General maintains the power of the Sovereign over the government and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Stefannica.

Executive

The Executive branch is responsible for the day-to-day administration and operation of the Stefannican government ministries, bureaus, agencies etc. It is headed by the Prime Minister who is chosen through national elections for a term of 4 years and could stand for re-elections. The Prime Minister then suggests to the King, candidates for the Cabinet. Unlike the Westminster style, members of the executive branch are not sitting parliamentarians, hence, an executive that is independent from and equal to the Legislative.

Legislative

The Legislative power is awarded to Parliament which consists of an elected lower house, the House of Commons with 280 seats, and an appointed upper house, the House of Lords with 48 seats. Bills maybe introduced by either house, except budgetary and appropriations bills, which are introduced by the House of Commons. Treaties and international agreements are ratified by the House of Lords only. All bills must be given Royal Assent before they become laws.

Judiciary

Judicial power is delegated to the High Court, which consists of 15 justices, with one presiding as the Chief Justice. All the Justices are appointed by the King. The High Court is responsible for the administrative supervision of all the King's courts and personnel thereof.

Party System

The modern political party system in the United Kingdom of Stefannica is a two-party system dominated by the Nationalist Party and the Union Party. Several other third parties from time to time achieve relatively minor representation at the national and state levels.

Among the two major parties, the Union Party/UP generally positions itself as left-of-center and supports a Stefannican liberalism platform, while the Nationalist Party/NP generally positions itself as right-of-center and supports a Stefannican conservatism platform.

Foreign Relations

The United Kingdom of Stefannica officially joined the NS universe community of nations with the signing of the of the Declaration for Membership on April 21, 2011 with Parliament and the Governor-General ratifying the WA Charter on the same date.

The Alterra Memorandum for Membership was signed on April 23, 2011 with Parliament and the Governor-General ratifying the Alterran Charter on April the 28th 2011.

With its membership to the Alterran Assembly, Stefannica maintains official diplomatic relations with practically all Alterran nations. However, not all regional countries maintain separate established embassies, as these are settled following diplomatic agreements. Countries without embassies are represented by the ambassador-at-large for Alterra, currently also the Permanent Representative to the AA, Harry Torn.

The Stefannican Air Force (SAF) ) is the aerial warfare branch of the Armed Forces of Stefannica. The technologically advance air force tasks include nuclear deterrence operations, special operations, air superiority, space superiority and support, command, recovery and rescue of personnel, global precision attack, rapid global mobility and agile combant support of Stefannican troops Alterran-wide.

The Stefannican Army (SA) is the main and largest branch of the Armed Forces of Stefannica, responsible for land-based military operations. It is charged to preserving the peace and security, and providing for the defense, of the United Kingdom of Stefannica, other Stefannican possessions, and any areas occupied by Stefannica and overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts that imperil the peace and security of the United Kingdom of Stefannica.

The Stefannican Navy(SN) is the naval warfare branch of the Armed Forces of Stefannica. Stefannica maintains a sizable modern blue-water navy with the ability to project force throughout the Alterran world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in Stefannica’s foreign and defense policy in Alterra.

Tasked to prepare, maintain and develop aircraft, weapons, tactics, technique, organization, and equipment of naval combat and service elements. Also, the SN functions include sea control, power projection and nuclear deterrence, in addition to "sealift" duties.

The Stefannican Marine Corps (SMC) specializes in amphibious warfare. It is primarily tasked to seize or defend advances to naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns; development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing force and other duties which the King and His Government might require.
An amphibious, expeditionary, air-ground combined arms task force, the SMC is capable of forcible entry from the air, land, and sea. It is capable of asymmetric warfare with conventional, irregular, and hybrid forces.

The Stefannican Space Fleet (SSF) is the most modern, technologically-advanced branch of the Armed Forces of Stefannica. Tasked primarily with military strategies outside of the Alterra-world, its functions include space-warfare operations, space superiority, power projection, secure transport and rapid mobility and logistical support, agile combatant support. It is a key element to Stefannica's foreign and defense policy in the NS-Universe .

Bomber

In the Stefannican Air Force, the distinction between bombers, fighter-bombers, and attack aircraft has become blurred. Many attack aircraft, even ones that look like fighters, are optimized to drop bombs, with very little ability to engage in aerial combat. The distinction being bombers generally long-range aircraft capable of striking targets deep within enemy territory, whereas fighter bombers and attack aircraft are limited to 'theater' missions in and around the immediate area of battlefield combat.

Cargo and Transport

The Air Force can provide rapid global mobility, which lies at the heart of Stefannican strategy. Air mobility is a national asset of growing importance for responding to emergencies and protecting Stefannican interests around the globe. Cargo and transport aircraft are typically used to deliver troops, weapons and other military equipment by a variety of methods to any area of military operations around the Alterran-world, usually outside of the commercial flight routes in uncontrolled airspace.

Cruisers are large surface combat vessels that conduct anti-air/anti-missile warfare, surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and strike operations independently or as members of a larger task force. The primary missions of submarines in the Stefannican Navy are peacetime engagement, surveillance and intelligence, special operations, precision strikes, battlegroup operations, and control of the seas. Attack submarines have several tactical missions, including sinking ships and other subs, launching cruise missiles, gathering intelligence, and assisting in special operations.

Economy

The United Kingdom of Stefannica has a capitalist mixed economy, which is fueled by abundant natural resources, a well-developed infrastructure, and high productivity.

Historically, the Stefannican economy has maintained a stable overall GDP growth rate, a low unemployment rate, and high levels of research and capital investment funded by both national and, because of decreasing saving rates, increasingly by foreign investors. It is currently one of the Alterran world's most dynamic economies.

A central feature of the Stefannican economy is the economic freedom afforded to the private sector by allowing the private sector to make the majority of economic decisions in determining the direction and scale of what the Stefannican economy produces. This is enhanced by relatively low levels of regulation and government involvement, as well as a court system that generally protects property rights and enforces contracts.

Stefannica is rich in mineral resources and fertile farm soil, and it is fortunate to have a moderate climate. It also has extensive coastlines - these extensive waterways have helped shape the country's economic growth over the years.

The number of workers and, more importantly, their productivity help determine the health of the Stefannican economy. Throughout its history, Stefannica has experienced steady growth in the labor force, a phenomenon that is both cause and effect of almost constant economic expansion.

Retailing is a major sector of the economy of Stefannica, indeed, it is often credited as one of the "drivers" of the economy. Consumer goods are commonly obtained through international trade, but many consumer products are available that are made in Stefannica.

Antiborea Program

The Stefannican Antiborea Program is an organization of the Stefannican government which has presence in the polar continent of Antiborea. It co-ordinates research and the operational support for research in the region. The program organizes, funds and supports researches that can be done exclusively in Antiborea or that can be done best from Antiborea.



Currently, the Antiborea Program maintains 2 year round research stations in the continent (the Stefannican Royal Antiborea Research Station/SRARS and the New Yotenheim Station) plus research vessels that sail in Antiborea's waters.

Energy

Stefannica is a large-energy consuming country. The majority of this energy is derived from renewable sources: in 2009, it was estimated that 25% of the nation's energy came from petroleum, 5% from coal, and 20% from natural gas. Nuclear power supplied 20% and renewable energy supplied 30%, which was mainly from hydroelectric dams although other renewables are included. Given that a large percentage of energy demands are supplied through renewable sources (wind, solar and hydro power), the Stefannican economy is one of the greenest and environmentally-friendliest in all of Alterra.

Religion

The Treaty of Union that led to the formation of the United Kingdom ensured that there would be a Nabetseian succession as well as a link between Church and State that still remains. Nabetseism is the largest religion.

The Nabetseican Church
(Pronounced Na-bet-see-can)

The Church holds Lord Abriam, the Founder and Lord Emperor of the Nabetseican Empire as All Father. It defines its mission as worshiping Lord Abriam, spreading the Holy Words of Lord Abriam, administering the Holy Rites and exercising charity. It teaches that the reigning Emperors and Kings of the Nabetseican Empire and Realms are the successors of Lord Abriam Himself and that the Sovereign, as the successor of the Lord, possesses universal primacy. Nabetseican doctrine maintains that the Church is infallible when it dogmatically teaches a doctrine of faith or morals.

Organization

The Church's hierarchy is headed by the Emperor of Nabetseica, a position that makes him the leader of the Universal Church (which is composed of the Orthodox Churches in full communion with the see of Imperia). Directly serving the Emperor is the Holy Curia, the central governing body that administers the day-to-day business of the Nabetseican Church. The Curia coordinates and provides the necessary central organization for the correct functioning of the Church and the achievement of its goals. It is administered by the Vicariate-General of Imperia and the Cardinals, a rank of honour bestowed by Emperors on certain ecclesiastics, such as leaders within the Holy Curia, bishops serving in major cities and distinguished theologians.

The Nabetseican Church shares communion with several autonomous Orthodox churches, each of which accepts the paramountcy and primacy of the Nabetseican Emperor. These churches, are communities whose forms of worship reflect different historical and cultural influences rather than differences in doctrine. In general, each Orthodox church is headed by a patriarch, a high priest/ess or high ranking bishop,and has a degree of self-governance over the particulars of its internal organization, liturgical rites, liturgical calendar, and other aspects of its spirituality.

Individual countries, regions, or major cities are served by local particular churches known as dioceses or eparchies, each overseen by a bishop. The bishops in a particular country or region are often organised into an episcopal conference, which aids in maintaining a uniform style of worship and coordination of social justice programs within the areas served by member bishops.

Dioceses are further divided into numerous individual communities called parishes, each staffed by one or more priests, deacons, and/or lay ecclesial ministers.Parishes are responsible for the day to day celebration of the Rites and pastoral care of the Nabetseican laity. Ordained Nabetseicans, as well as members of the laity, may enter into consecrated life as monks or nuns.

Doctrine

Nabetseican beliefs are summarised in the Holy Creed of the Edicts of the Emperor and detailed in by the Magisterium of the Church. Based on the promises of Lord Abriam in the Holy Scriptures, the Church believes that it is continually guided by Holy Spirits (past emperors and kings) and so protected infallibly from falling into doctrinal error. The Nabetseican Church teaches that the Holy Spirits reveals Lord Abriam's truth through Sacred Scripture (the Holy Words and those written by the holy men), Sacred Tradition (those inspired by the Holy Spirits) and the Magisterium (the teaching authority of the Church vested in the reigning Emperor and the Holy Curia).

Holy Rites

Simply referred to us Rites, are visible rituals that Nabetseican see as signs the All Father's presence and effective channels of His's grace to all those who receive them with the proper disposition. The Church classifies them into groups the Rites of Initiation, the Rites of Worship, the Rites of Healing, and the Rites of Service to the Faithful.

Inquisition

The Holy Inquisition of The United Kingdom of Stefannica

Simply known as The Inquisition, the Holy Office is tasked to maintain and defend the Divinity of the Nabetseican Monarchs, the integrity of the Faith, and to examine and proscribe errors and false doctrines. For this reason, everything that touches in any way such matters fall under its competence. Given its significant duties, the office is seen as one of the most powerful institutions in the Kingdom. It is often viewed as the 'Fourth branch of government, or the Crown's branch, as its sole duty is to protect the Divine Monarchy.

The Inquisition consists of five Inquisitors, one bearing the title of High Inquisitor. Appointments are made personally by the Divine Monarch, each Inquisitor serving indefinite terms, unless recalled or reprieved. Inquisitors may or may not be priests of the Church.

The High Inquisitor serves as the chief magistrate of the tribunal and leads the entire institution. He in turn is subject to the Grand Inquisitor who heads the Supreme and Sacred Office of the Universal Inquisition.

HEALTH

The health care system in Stefannica provides healthcare services, including screening examinations, prenatal care and infectious disease control, with the patient accepting responsibility for 30% of these costs while the government pays the remaining 70%. Payment for personal medical services is offered through a universal health care insurance system that provides relative equality of access, with fees set by a government committee. People without insurance through employers can participate in a national health insurance programme administered by local governments. Patients are free to select physicians or facilities of their choice and cannot be denied coverage.
