Pokémon Discussion Thread

Postby Milograd » Fri Mar 16, 2012 7:58 am

Wied said that posting something akin to this was kosher, so I figured I'd try it out. I've just started playing SoulSilver again, and am doing so after having beaten the original Gold/Silver games as well. Thus far I'm in Goldenrod City, but my party is fairly feeble outside of my starter. I'm currently trying to raise its EVs but am having a fair amount of trouble doing so for whatever reason.

Regardless, seeing as there is no active Pokemon thread in A&F, feel free to discuss any aspect of Pokemon herein. Cheers.

Bulbasaur is pro, and I tend to pick it in the Kanto-based games when I'm not using Charmander. Furthermore, here's my party. I'll include movesets later.

    Milograd's Party

    » Quilava Level 26 | Ability: Blaze

    • HP: 65
    • Attack: 40
    • Defense: 39
    • Sp.Atk: 49
    • Sp. Def 39
    • Speed: 41
    » Beedrill Level 14 | Ability: Swarm

    • HP: 43
    • Attack: 29
    • Defense: 18
    • Sp.Atk: 18
    • Sp. Def 29
    • Speed: 33
    » Togepi Level 1 | Ability: Hustle

    • HP: 11
    • Attack: 5
    • Defense: 5
    • Sp.Atk: 5
    • Sp. Def 6
    • Speed: 5
    » Mareep Level 9 | Ability: Static

    • HP: 28
    • Attack: 14

Bulbasaur certainly takes the first two gyms a lot easier than Charmander does.

Yes, it does, but ultimately it's a Breeze blowing through Erika and such when you have a Charmander. Furthermore, I've always been up for the challenge of a type disadvantage personally.

Ahh, Pokemon. I love that stuff. Wish I still had a DS so I could play it.

The last one I owned was Pearl version. My main team was undeafeatable. I remember it had a level 100 Staraptor, level 100 Kyogre (I don't like to use legendaries though), and a level 80 Empoleon.

Fun times...

You could always use an emulator or something akin to one if you want to keep playing.

Ooo. A Pokémon thread. Awesome.

I've been replaying Emerald recently, trying out a couple new Pokémon I haven't used before. I chose Mudkip over Torchic this time, and I can't believe I never used it before. Mudkip is fucking awesome, especially after it evolves. I'm also using Swellow and Cacturne for this run, and I'm finding I like them a lot. Sure, Cacnea is hard to raise, but it's worth it.

Yeah, I've got a great DS emulator called DeSmuME. Though, I'm not sure if it's available for Windows or if it's Linux only...

There's got to be one for Windows before there's one for Linux, I assume... :s

Mudkip is really pro and Swampert is a personal favorite of mine. Cacnea are troublesome at first but Cacturnes are really helpful as stallers, although their defensive stats leave much to be desired. They also look very cool.

I don't know. Linux users are the ones who use all the emulators being that it's the only way to use a lot of programs. :P

I've wanted to use a Cacturne for ages now, but I never got around to it. The same with Tentacruel. I've always wanted to use one, but I just never do. I always end up using other water-types and other poison-types. :/

I certainly know the feeling; I always tell myself that I should train an Arcanine and a Aggron, but sadly I never get around to it.

Aggron is worth it, at least it was when I used to play. That was one of the only pokemon I obsessively tried to train.

Indeed; it had excellent defense stats as well which made it useful, and its attack wasn't too shabby either.

Arcanine is awesome. I used one in HeartGold.

The problem with Aggron is that whole double weakness to fighting and ground thing...

lv.70 Swellow
lv.50 Mightyena
lv. 70 Ludicolo
lv. 70 Ninetales
My Diamond Team was

If we're sharing our teams, then my Platinum team was Empoleon, Gengar, Crobat, Roserade, Gardevoir, and Gallade, all of which were at level 87 last time I played. HeartGold was Umbreon, Lapras, Arcanine, Weezing, Fearow, and Haunter (I never got around to evolving him), and I believe they are somewhere in the mid 60's.

My friends seem to have gotten back into pokémon again recently, a nostalgia for the first few games and they were very noice, though my first game was Ruby. I've also played Emerald, FireRed (then I lost it...) and Diamond. Being young though when I played them in the rather... non-tactical manner, defeating everything with my super leveled Blaziken and ahem using my other pokemon for HMs/shields. Still, I had lots of fun :) (and I suppose the beginnings of a balanced team are emerging on Diamond)

That strategy is rather pointless. Sure, Facade's power is doubled because of the status ailment, but Usaring's Attack is halved because of the burn, giving the move a net gain of nothing, in addition to the damage done by the burn. You'd be much better off with a Silk Scarf and some other move, like Slash, Strength, or Return.
