50 years…

The Spires of Salvation, the city of dreams and wonder, unmistakable for any resident of the loosely assembled nations of Lustria. The walled city of Salvation stood as a safehold for travelers and a symbol of the unity of the Lustrian nations in the face of insurmountable odds. It was in this location where the mighty forces of Valtrox saw their inevitable victory.

50 years…

The furor of battle waged below as the god-like Rimoru fought a losing battle with the brutal Valtrox. Before his moment of victory, his general and twice turned traitor, Sarik the ungrateful, Sarik the Traitor-Lord…Sarik the Savior, struck the mighty blow, falling the Flame-Keeper, the God of Brutal War, amongst other things.

50 year…And things should have been better…

The setting sun cast its red beams on the bustling city, easily as big as the once glorious Imperium City, with no sign the busy people were slowing down. The street lights sprung up, either by magical or natural means. Fireflies sprung from their daytime hideouts to add their own sparkle to the shimmering sky.

The spires that rose from the brilliant white walls of Salvation kept watch over the city like a vigilant guardian, rising high above the trees outside the walls. The towers were built to protect the good people of Salvation from outside threats, threats that shouldn’t be there after Valtrox’s defeat. But demons still lurked outside the walls, disorganized bands, usually half demons mixed in with true demons. There were also the bandits, usually displaced soldiers who needed their fill of war as it was all they believed they knew. The occasionally were joined by the more intelligent demons, making them an even more potent force. But amongst the wild animals, barbarians, and bandits, the worst were the coordinated demons; enough sentience to know effective battle strategies and powerful enough to pose a direct threat to the city. That is what the walls keep out and have successfully kept since they were completed 30 years ago.

Within the walls stood mansions, markets, and other large buildings that kept the economy and the people busy. One could hear the shouts of a merchant attempting to sell the finest jewelry, crafted from the Guardian’s private jewelers themselves, or another trying to sell the legendary scales of Orogen, said to have healing properties and good luck for fishermen. Despite these tall tails, people purchase and merchants prosper, in turn funding the local taverns, brothels, and other businesses, keeping the coffers full and the city sprawling.

These prospects would certainly appeal to the ruler, who would most likely be considered the ruler of Lustria, a feat that has never happened under Lustrian History, as it was always divided.
There were the people of Iskan, a massive desert nation notable for its now ruined library, stuffed full of knowledge of varying kinds, even forbidden, hidden, and even forgotten information. The brilliant nation of scholars and mages were lead by the famed goddess-of-sorts, Rimoru, whose gaze was said to melt the heart of even the strongest willed men, who was said to have stolen faithful men from their wives only to be slaughtered as sheep and served as a meal to guests. The once unending deserts of Iskan have become pockmarked with glass, said to be from Valtrox himself as he raced to destroy the unified nations of Lustria. Rimoru City, the jewel of the desert was raised by the dragon-demon during the final battle, but is now the site of Salvation. What became of Rimoru or her family is unknown as they disappeared after the fight with Valtrox.

To the South, the Imperium, a nation built on laws and order, strict and powerful. The Imperium was said to have flexed their military muscle during the end of the last Gate War, before their city was destroyed by the demon dragon himself, Valtrox, in which they fell into disarray. Their endless plains now lay scorched and dead. Necromancers have been found to linger about the city ruins, attempting to find corpses but even the corpses are in short supply. The Arena still stands but it is no longer a tool used to dispatch of criminals but a tool for the enjoyment of the Arena ruler, a criminal himself who throws his opponents in the pits to fight against impossible odds.

Just south of the Imperium was the noble Illuminata, headed by the legendary Patriarch until his downfall while fighting the monstrous Inzikai. It is said that after his downfall, the Illuminata fell to ruin, the Imperium and the Cult of Valtrox destroying what was left of their once magnificent empire. Now, the majority of the towns are in ruin due to the massive offensive of the “Uncivilized Races” against the Illuminata before the final gate was opened. The former capital, Illucia, ironically enough, is under the control of the formerly known “Uncivilized Races” trying to keep their rag-tag alliance together. Their success is mixed as groups splinter from the once mighty barbarians.

In the north used to be the mighty Cultists of Valtrox, a land still flooded with disease and death, covered in swamps and literal ghost towns. The effects of the fanatical cultists is still felt as remnants of the Cult still occupy a significant portion of the nation, although they are scattered and disunified after their avatar and god fell to Sarik the traitor in what they believe should have been the decisive victory in their favor. Like most heroes of the final Gate War, Empress Teralynn, the latest ruler of the Cults disappeared. Most believe she died, whether by her own followers or by other means. There are still some who say that she yet lives, her never-ending schemes waiting to come to fruition…

In the Exe-Duun Mountains, where the mythic ferocious Morgrathiens lived are still home to barbarians, however after the final gate war, the barbarians broke whatever unity they had and fought amongst each other for territory, supplies, and nearly everything one could fight for. What became of War chief Higsthor, the legendary mammoth of a man is also unknown.

It certainly seemed to most Lustrian citizens that what should have been a happy ending certainly did not end up a happy ending. The mighty nations of Lustria have dissolved, giving way to anarchy and evil, too small a threat to create an army against but too large to be considered a nuisance. Salvation was the only city in Lustria worthy of note during these dark times and even then, should an army march against it, it is doubtful Salvation could save itself, its ruler ailing and bordering on the insane.

Yes, not even the ruler can enjoy being ruler much, having terrible ordeals to confront on a daily basis, basically leaving the city and its territories to the greedy hands of corrupt nobles who, although do some decent things for the city, act more for themselves than the poor rotting in the slums, giving way to crime and more corruption. The good side of town looked great while the slums were tucked away like a child’s poor attempt at cleaning his room, throwing his toys under a rug in hopes no one will notice.

Yet People still flocked to Salvation, pushing the limits of its manmade borders. Farms and smaller towns were built just outside of the wall’s protection, a treacherous run away from Salvation. The guards along the walls frequently patrol the outlying territories, keeping the peasants relatively safe from the dangers, more for the agriculture they provide than for their own personal well-being.

The bustling day in Salvation slowly sank into a peaceful night, the stars reflecting off what was left of the Lustrian Sea, a body of water that had seen better days, so the stories say. As the hours went by, the city seemed to fall silent except for the bustling taverns and brothels that dotted the city. The glittering stars began to dissolve amongst the rolling thick clouds, filled with moisture and ready to burst. Lightning arced through the dark grey mass, ever increasing in size. It was going to be a stormy night…

That’s for sure… A figure, cloaked in shadows lurked amongst the alleyways, avoiding other forms of life as much as possible. As the citizens scuttled for the safety of cover, the figure stepped into the light. It stood a good eight feet tall, at least, its shoulders bulky and broad. Its body was cloaked, preventing anyone from seeing what being resided underneath, not that anyone cared really. It wasn’t the most unusual thing Lustria had ever seen before. The figure walked down the cool cobblestone street, its’ cloaked head turning every which way as if searching for someone or something. It turned a corner, seeming to move faster after a quick glance at another clock, the fringes of the cloak giving way ever so slightly to reveal a reddish tint to what appeared to be a thin tail.
Where is he…I know he’s here… the cloaked figure thought to itself. It let out a deep growl as frustration began to boil over as it passed street after street, turning corner after corner, searching the alley ways for a specific figure. Someone who shouldn’t be here. Who shouldn’t even be alive... And suddenly, the figure leapt into the shadows, slowing its’ breathing almost to the point of breathlessness. Heart pumping, adrenaline rushing, the creature began to finger the hilt of a hidden sword. Must wait for it…
“Are you sure then? The arti…the people can be found in these cities?” rasped a voice from the alleyway. It wasn’t as the figure remembered it…but it had a similar timbre.
“Aye, milord. Me scouts found him themselves…with strange powers an’ e’rything…” came a half-drunken reply from an unrecognizable figure.
“Garren, you have done a good service to your people. Soon…we shall not have to hide anymore,” rasped the target again. “Soon…he shall rise again and right the wrong.”
“Good luck, milord. I look forward to that day.”

With that, the sound of armored boots came from the alleyway, stopping right at the alley entrance, a mere four feet from the cloaked figure in the shadows.
Wait for it…too many people around…I don’t want to get hunted again, thought the figure, fighting it’s’ hardest to keep from slashing out at the…thing in the alleyway. It was much smaller than the cloaked figure remembered. The creature stood perhaps five foot six with black armored boots revealed from under its own cloak. Yet there was no mistake that the figure was more than it seemed. Underneath that cloak was a creature the world should never see again. There was a flash of lightning, revealing that dreaded mask, then came the thunder, as though announcing his presence…
The shadow-figure couldn’t wait anymore, with an almost inhumane growl, it leapt for the shadows to deal the killing blow, right across the neck of the slimy demon, yet it was still as fast as the shadow-figure remembered. With a smooth, steady motion, a gauntleted hand pulled out a wicked, serrated sword that appeared as though it were embers glowing in a fire. Sparks flew as their swords caught onto each other.
“I should have smelled you, abomination…” growled the alley-figure.
“And I should have killed you when I had the chance, demon,” replied the shadow-assassin. Whatever innocents were still roaming the streets at that time soon ran, to the safety of their homes or to get a guard, they may not know for as soon as the shadowed-figure pulled its’ weapon free, the target leapt nimbly away, opening a gauntleted hand and letting free a blinding flash of light, straight into the assassin’s face, revealing gently curving horns on the shadow-figure’s forehead.
“Who’s the demon now, young one?” came the reply, almost gleeful before the figure took off, dodging people and carriages as he made his way down the streets.
The shadow-assassin blinked away the blindness, setting off to follow the running figure, frustrated at the purple blobs refusing to leave its’ vision, frustrated at the figure running from it, and moreso than that, surprised that the figure would even think about leaving. It growled as it knocked over a person and crossed the street, nearly getting hit by a carriage twice before it tried regaining distance, which it knew it could do with such size advantage.
Yet the smaller creature nimbly latched onto a support beam, despite the armor, to a second floor-balcony and quickly climbed up to the second floor railings and leaping up to grab hold of a gargoyle atop the building, hoisting himself up.
The cloaked assassin snarled obscenities before leaping up to the railings and pulling itself up, the iron rails groaning at the massive weight. As the large figure made its way to the ceiling, much the same way, lightning flashed again, with the tidings of the rain. Where did you go, demon? Then it saw him, leaping onto another second floor balcony from the ceiling of this building and making his way to the third floor, most likely to continue scaling the buildings to the roof. I hope you get what you deserve from the lightning was the only thought that crossed the cloaked figure as it dashed to follow the fleeing man, who had already climbed to the fourth balcony.
The cloaked figure leapt up to the third, the cloak covering the shadow-figure splitting in half down the middle back to reveal two demonic wings, giving the creature a boost to the fourth, nearly catching the nimble man, who had flipped out of the way to the fifth floor, flinging another flare into the demon’s face, who promptly looked away, feeling its hair sizzle slightly. “You’ll have to do better than-” Suddenly a blast of smoke choked its lungs as it nearly fell off the fourth floor of the building, its hands quickly grabbing hold of the rails. Yet the older rails of the fourth floor could not stand the demon’s weight and snapped from the balcony floor, jouncing the demon, loosening the grip it had on the metal bars. The demon let out a short curse before pulling itself onto the balcony and looking up, only to be pelted with heavy rain. Shielding its eyes, it leapt up to the roof, pulling out a small dagger just in time to deflect the deadly serrated blade from its neck, the cloak ripping from the closeness of the blade’s edge. With its other hand, it reached out to grab the head of its’ foe, however the alley-figure spun away from the demon’s hand, using its momentum to strike from the other side, which was quickly blocked by the demon’s main weapon, an elegant elf longsword, possibly stolen. The masked figure growled a series of harsh syllables and opened its palm, letting loose a blast of fire right into the demon. The demon shouted in pain and surprise, however swung the cloak in time for it to take most of the damage rather than the wearer. When the demon cleared its eyes, it only saw the edges of the masked-opponent’s cloak flapping behind it as it leapt off the edge of the building.

It rushed to the rampart of the building and quickly scanned the street floor below, only to notice the figure riding atop a carriage headed towards the gate. With another curse, the demon leapt off the building and spread its wings to catch up to the fleeing man. “You should be dead!” it shouted as it flung itself at the man, barreling him over, his hand barely latching onto an elegant handle atop the carriage.
With a growl, the man swung himself to the door, barely missing a slice at his hand from the demon’s longsword. The man balled his fist and punched through the carriage window, resulting in a scream from the occupant inside. The man then latched onto a ceiling handle on the inside made for bumpy rides with his inside hand before bringing up his serrated longsword to deflect a blow from above. The demon growled and struck down again, however the man caught the edge of the demon’s blade with his serrated edge and pulled down violently, toppling the demon, at least most of the way, so the demon was barely hanging on to the edge of the carriage, having to pull its feet up to keep from dragging onto the ground. Now face to face, the demon and the man glared at each other before the demon kicked out at the man, the force of the kick pulling him from his hand hold from the inside. His sword hand swung forward to grab hold of the door, which opened at his accidental pull, providing a barrier between man and demon. The demon’s only visible facial feature, its lips, smiled viciously, revealing large wicked fangs as it knew the man could not defend and keep hold at the same time.

The man looked up to judge the distance between his free hand and the rooftop handlebars he had just been holding onto. Just the opportunity the demon was seeking as it thrust out with a well timed strike. However the man expected this, leaping to the roof handle while pushing the door closed, the broken window catching onto the demon’s sword, twisting its arm in an awkward position and slamming on its arm. The demon yelped and fell away from the carriage, rolling some distance away to avoid getting trampled over by other street traffic. It rolled onto the balls of its feet, ready to give chase to the figure who had now commandeered a horse from the carriage and was riding out of the gate.
The demon swore loudly as it flexed its wings, the burned, tattered cloak beginning to fall apart, revealing a reddish tinge to the oddly textured skin, almost as though it were made of rocks. Someone nearby screamed and the demon felt a fist-sized rock smack into its horns. It looked over from underneath its hood, its eyes glowing in growing anger as it leapt to its sword, which had fallen a few feet ahead and was about to set after the origin of the thrown stone when something caught its attention along the edge of the sword. Hair…white hair… The demon narrowed its eyes, the world suddenly dissolving around it, ignoring the rocks and the clip-clop of guards approaching via horseback. Its eyes were focused on the silky strands of white hair…they were familiar…like someone else the assassin knew…
“Die, demon!” growled a guard as he slashed down at the demon. Unlucky for the guard, the demon snapped to reality and leaned back to avoid the shot, pushing its full body weight into a quick spin of its arm, digging its own sword into the guard’s shoulder, between the plates of his armor and dragging him off his horse. Then with a glance around, realizing causing more trouble won’t help things, the demon crouched low and soared upwards with a burst of speed, the cloak flaking apart as it went, its form revealing a humanoid body, a thin tail trailing behind it.
Something was bad was going on in Salvation, the people feared. They knew demons normally weren’t seen inside the walls. But it wasn’t the demon sighting that scared the people the most…it was not knowing why it was…

Deep in the slums of the west, near the dockyards alongside the Lustrian Sea stood the “Tree House”. The “Tree House” was nothing like a tree house, but was more in fact, a shoddy, run-down warehouse. A quarter of the roof had fallen in a few years ago, while most windows were cracked. There were makeshift beds, too small for a grown adult to sleep in, that littered the floors, along with random debris and knick knacks considered junk to most but held sentimental value to their owners. The Treehouse was the unofficial safehouse of the street children. It was usually occupied by children who had no home for themselves or from the street children caught in the middle of trouble, whether being hunted by guards or in the middle of a terrible storm, much like the one that had started to occur…

“I wonder what’s going on?” came a child’s voice.
“Certainly got the guards in a hurry…” replied another.
“Aye…maybe one of the nobles was murdered?” came another quiet voice.
“Nuh-uh. Would definitely be more guards and screaming…”
“Well, I ain’t gonna leave this. I don’t wanna get into the rain…last thing we know, the lightning is gonna hit one of us!”
A scream resounded through the slums before a few clanks of metal. The children looked at each other worriedly, cowering in what little shelter they had.

There was a loud knocking at the door, making many of the children yelp in surprise and worry. One of the older kids looked at the unofficial leaders of the Treehouse who nodded slowly, allowing the doors to be opened, revealing one of the older kids, a notable thief amongst the teenagers unaffiliated with organized crime.

“What are you guys doin’ here? There’s plenty of easy pickin’s here!” he said as he brushed his slick dirty brown hair out of his face. “I mean, there’s a huge commotion with the guards and rumor has it that it was a demon!”

There were more gasps at the word demon, something that frightened children and adults alike. While these children knew little about what had occurred ages ago, knew little of Valtrox and the millions of lives lost, they still knew full well the terror and destruction the demons can and have caused.

Out of a small hole around seven to eight inches tall, a very small and bony girl with odd wings that looked like they belonged more to a dragonfly walked out quietly. She had very pointy ears and was covered with dirt so much you could not tell what color her skin or hair was. Amongst the brown that coated the tiny girl, a bright green shined from behind her dirty face. Her clothes were just as covered with dirt as the rest of her, but a keen eye could tell that they were cast-off baby clothes from a rich household. Nothing else could fit the small girl. Her eyes and face were lit up with curiosity as she listened intently.

No demons have been sighted inside the walls before! How can this be? Or is it just a rumor that is being passed around? Perhaps there was a demon though! That's so interesting. Why would it be in here? How did it get in? Her mind was whirling with all the information that she wanted to shout out at the teenager. She had learned that among the street kids that it's sometimes easier to get information by waiting for them to finish speaking though so she kept her mouth shut for the moment, bouncing slightly on her toes in impatience.

“We don’t want to get eaten by the demon!” shouted a kid.
“And we don’t want them to put evil demon egg sacks in our stomachs or turn us into imps!” shouted another. Screams erupted from the crowds at this last worry.

“Pah, quit being a bunch of cowards!” the teenage thief laughed. “The demon took flight after it failed to kill its target…So, now the guards are all patrolling the streets.”

“So how does that make the pickings easier?” called an older kid, a veteran at finding secret tunnels and passages for the other kids.

“Well, ol’ friend. More guards on the streets mean fewer guards guarding the buildings…Think about it, the candy shop, the toy stores, the food stalls, the taverns, the palace. Let your mind wander because this night, anything is possible!”

“The palace? Nuh-uh. That is untouchable. I doubt they would have put all the guards from there on the streets!”

“No…but someone sneaky enough…could probably find out why the mighty king of Salvation won’t come out of hiding. I mean think about it, with that knowledge alone, you’ll have people craving your attention to try to find out who the ruler really is. They’ll feed you, clothe you, and serve your every whim. Not to mention the palace is said to have some of the most valuable trinkets Lustria has to offer. You could buy the palace if you wanted to!”

There were sounds of excitement and awe from amongst the crowd at this prospect.

“So, anyone want to try it?”

“Why don’t you? You have the skills!” said the unofficial leader, intrigued but not wanting to risk himself.

The boy frowned slightly and pulled up his ripped pant leg, revealing a deep gash running down his lower leg, almost to his ankle. “Got caught on a fence when I was trying to jump off of it. But look, it was worth it!” He opened up a large bag which probably served as his pillow case as well, revealing glittering jewels, jewelry, and other valuable trinkets. There more sounds of awe from the room as children scrambled to take a look.

“And I think you all are chickens to try to get this kind of loot. Even you,” he said to the children’s leader. “In fact, I’d be willing to bet no one is going to set foot in the palace. I’m willing to bet this entire bag for it. Heck, I’ll throw in all my belongings as well!”

More sounds of amazement however, no one seemed to be taking his challenge.

Knowledge itself would get people to wanting to be around me and they'd feed me regularly so I wouldn't have to steal all I ate? I'd be able to get new clothes? Valuable trinkets too? They're always soo pretty! Plus, why would the king not want to come out? I guess I would have a better chance than most of the other kids at getting into the actual palace.... They also have to have some better food than the street venders have. If I get some of that, I may not have to steal as much food for a while. Even if I don't find out exactly why the ruler won't come out, I'll get some respect for getting into the palace itself. The other kids may stop trying to steal my own catch if I can get that respect! The little girl thought with hope.
For a few more seconds the young girl watched the crowd of kids before starting to smile a little. She suddenly climbed up some rubble to get a better view and shouted loudly and proudly in a high pitched voice to be heard over the crowd, “I'll take that bet! I can get into places none of you can just because of my size so I could get into the palace without too much of a problem.”
All eyes turned to the tiny fairy-like girl. Most children raised their eyebrows in surprise. Some burst out laughing a few minutes after her outburst, while more stared at her as though she was joking.
“Buzz, you couldn’t get into the palace if your life depended on it. You’d run at the faintest shadow, hide at the quietest noise, and beg for mercy at the smallest nudge. You’re a coward,” grumbled the unofficial leader. Some snickers resounded in the Treehouse. “The only thing you’re good for is giving us sport to catch for fun.”

The young winged girl scowled. “I may run and hide at many things that you guys won't, but that's what keeps me from getting caught as many times as some of you have!” She glared at the one who had spoken as she addressed him, “My ability to run from all of your grasps has made it so I know how to find the small cracks so that the guards and others won't know where to look for me. My small size makes it so most traps don't actually hit me even if they go off because I was unable to disarm them, but all of you would have to admit, I'm quite good with disarming the traps. Plus none of you are brave enough to even think about trying to get in there! I am! I can get in if everything is like he said!” She gestured angrily at the teenage thief.
The thief smiled as he walked over to the little girl. “Buzz…” he pat her rather roughly on the back as he sat down on the rubble pile next to her. “I say let her go. Why not let her show to you guys how good she really is. Let her do a service to us and this town. Right, loyalty amongst the Treehouse. Right, Buzz? If you succeed…” he gently tapped her nose, “then you take all the credit but put all of us in the limelight. Perhaps this won’t just benefit little Buzz but me too. And you…and you! All of you!”
There were certainly a lot of conversations happening after that comment. The leader narrowed his eyes at the others, his own close friends whispering amongst themselves. “Alright Buzz. If you want to go humiliate yourself again, go right ahead. But if you do come back…well, we’ll talk about that if you do.”
The teenage thief smile and peered down at Buzz, “Congrats, Buzz. Sounds like we have our own little adventure.” He stood up, putting most of his weight on his uninjured leg and raised his arms for silence. “I will go with Buzz, as I have seen the guards and their patrol paths. Perhaps this is the night we begin a lavish lifestyle!”
There were cheers amongst the children, some of the younger ones beginning to chat, “Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!”
The girl smiled at the thief's confidence that she could do it. That didn't happen very often. She then scowled slightly at the leader's comment. She started to beam when the other kids started chanting her name. She wasn't much older than those that were chanting, but she had at least a year on the majority of those kids. She looked up at the thief for a moment then glanced down at his injured leg before saying, “You can help me get past the guards, but with that leg you said that you couldn't actually get into the palace. I'll be doing that alone.” She reached into one of her sleeves to feel for a small pocket that she kept a second set of clothes that she had made in. She tried to never leave the Tree House without one.
“Aye, you’ll have to do the palace exploration yourself, Buzz,” the thief replied. “Now prepare yourself. I will tend to my wounds and await you at the entrance. Don’t take too long, I don’t want the guards to go back to their positions ‘cause then things will get really hard.” With that, the thief walked off to “his” position and began bandaging up his leg before walking to the entrance of the Treehouse, his bag of loot tied on his back for safe keeping.

Buzz glanced around at the kids before quickly slinking back into the hole that led to where she slept. There she kept her tools for dealing with traps and locks. This is a big job, just to get in the palace. No one has done it before. I need to be careful the whole way. Now's the time more so than ever before to not get distracted or caught. I don't even know what the guards would do with me if I did get caught. She glanced at her small catch that she had collected over half her life. A few wigs, some stuffing from one of the noble's teenage daughter's when they had stuffed their tops to look like they had bigger chests, some baubles that had caught her eyes in homes she had broken into, and just a couple of coppers that she had saved from some people, who unknowingly, donated from their pockets.

Buzz picked up her tools and pulled out of her sleeve what looked like a tiny bag with little holes that a tiny head and arms could stick through. She smiled and tucked it back into her sleeve with a few tiny wires. In her other sleeve, she tucked the tools for locks and traps. She then walked out of her hole and carefully moved around the other kids to the entrance. She nodded at the younger kids who spoke up as she walked by to give her encouragement, and carefully avoided the hands and feet of the older ones who thought she was no good other than their own entertainment.

The thief was waiting at the entrance when she arrived there and she looked with distaste out at the rain, flinching slightly at the lightning. “I'm ready to go.” Buzz said happily, covering up her dislike of the rain and lightning. She paused for a moment before saying, “But can we try to stay out of the rain. I may need my wings and I can't fly that well when they're wet.”

The thief glanced at her and said, “Glad you're ready to go. As for staying out of the rain, it'll be almost impossible to do.” He glanced out into the rain looking in the direction of the palace before saying, “Let's go little Buzz. The longer we stand around talking the harder it will be for you to get in.” He started walking off staying to the shadows, but not trying to stay out of the rain.

Buzz glanced at her wings sadly before setting off after him. I cannot ask him more questions about the demon now. If I did, we'd be at risk of the guards hearing us and if they hear our conversation, they may assume we have something to do with the demon. I don't want to be caught even before we make it to the palace. She concentrated on not asking questions and following the leading thief while she tried to stay as dry as possible.

They had to stop a few times to allow the patrols to pass them by, often forced to retreat to alleyways to keep from being spotted. When they reached outside of the palace, the thief stopped in the shadows and whispered, “This is as far as I can take you. Good luck in there. I'll meet you back at the Tree House if you make it in and out, but I'll stay here until you go in to make sure you go in.”

Buzz looked at him insulted and said firmly, “I'm going in. I'll be finding out exactly why the ruler never comes out and you will be the first one I tell.” She turned around and quickly moved away from the thief.

She quickly climbed the fence and started to circle the palace She suddenly saw one window slightly open as she moved up to it she noticed the smell of food being cooked. She carefully climbed up to the window and peered in, keeping herself from being seen. Inside she saw one older lady working on kneading the bread for the next day. The lady's back was turned toward the table so Buzz slipped in the window dropping to the counter and then to the floor really quickly and quietly. She looked around slightly before deciding to grab some food to snack on during her explorations since she hadn't eaten in a while.

She sneaked quietly to near the furnace and turned her back to it for one minute to let her gossamer wings to dry before sneaking over to the door. It was left open to help heat the servant's quarters. She started to make her way through that staying carefully away from the servants that were moving around the area. Since these were the servant's quarters, there were no guards, but she had to figure out how to get through the door into the regular halls. She knew that those would be patrolled. If she opened the door and there were guards passing by on the other side then she'd be caught or as good as it.

She examined the door for a couple of minutes before smiling. She walked over to a corner of the hallway. And shifted sizes moving around in her sleeve for half a minute before coming out with the tiny clothes on. She quickly flew over to the door and laid down on her stomach. Crawling forward she moved under the door. Peering around after she stuck her head out she quickly pulled back. Well, I'm glad I tried this first or those guards would have caught me and Granz would certainly have recognized me. He's been looking for a reason to capture me for the last year since I made his patron, Lord Zwalaski, angry by showing that he wore a wig because he was bald. After a minute she looked back out. The coast was clear.

She crawled back and flew quickly back to her clothes and changed her size back putting on her other clothes again and tucking her small clothes back into the inside pocket. Then she went to the door and opened it slowly before slipping through it and shutting it behind her. The first thing she noticed was that the walls of the hallway. They all either had colorful tapestries or colorful paintings. All of the pictures showed battles. The colors were all eye-catching. The magic was always shown in some of the most bright and unusual colors. There was purples, reds, oranges, yellows, greens, and blues used to do the magic. She did take notice that all the swords seemed to be really pretty, but had no bright colors so she didn't pay much attention to them. She really didn't take notice of the people, except for the ones that were surrounded by bright colors. She started wandering down the hallway looking at the paintings as she went.

After a few minutes, she heard a noise like another patrol walking around, she hurried her steps, moving just as quietly as before, but this time it was with much more purpose. The personal quarters of the nobles are normally upstairs and that's where the nobles generally keep their secrets and their valuables. So that's where I'll start... Now just to find the stairs. After a few minutes she found the stairs and snuck up them before the patrol could get close enough to spot her. There she noticed everything seemed more barren than the downstairs. The walls and floors still had the same paintings which she couldn't take her eyes off of. There was also a few ceremonial sets of armor. She climbed up a few to get a better look at them and left lots of dirt marks behind her.

She kept wandering around and noticing lots of bedrooms that were pretty fancy, but they for some reason didn't look like they were lived in much. There was no dust or anything, it's just that they didn't have the feel of a regular bedroom. These are very fancy guest rooms, the fanciest that I've seen so far.... She looked around them, but they seemed to not have anything that she could easily lift. As she continued on she found the dining halls and noticed that they everything was very fancy as well. Nothing to take here either.

Eventually she looked down a hall and saw a pair of guards standing by one door. Bulls eye. She thought happily. Now how to get in there.... She glanced around silently walking around the hallways before climbing up to one of the helmets. She smiled as she gently picked it up. It was fairly round and would roll quite nicely. She walked back to a nearby hallway junction, glancing around to see if there was something she could hide behind nearby. She stopped there and put the helmet down gently she suddenly pushed the helmet with all her strength to roll it at the feet of the nearest statue which the helmet did not belong to. The second after pushing the helmet, she ran behind one of the other statues in the hallway closest to the guarded room.

The helmet crashed into the feet of the helmet and the noise caused the guards to rush past Buzz to investigate. As soon as they moved past, Buzz flew to the door that had guarded and tried to open it, but it was heavy and she couldn't the first try. She knew she only had a short time so she ran to the other side of the hallway before running at the door and throwing her shoulder against it. The door opened slightly and she slipped in and got behind the door to hit it again with enough force to shut it. She then looked around the room she was in.

There was no one in the room and there was actually a bunch of rooms that were connected. All the walls and floors were perfectly white with not a speck of dirt or dust on them except for where Buzz had left some dirt. As she wandered she found all the rooms were fairly stark. There was one odd thing in the rooms and that was a pristine and very fancy armor standing in one corner. She climbed all the way up it to get a good look at it all, leaving a trail of dirt and smudges all over it. After a few minutes of searching around, she decided that she needed to leave. She couldn't leave the way she came in so she had to find another way.

Looking around she saw a window and opened it quietly before slipping out and leaving it cracked. It doesn't look like anyone is going to come by anytime soon so I'll just leave this open. It's too hard to shut it. She thought as she used her wings to float down to the ground. She then walked back to the kitchen and snuck in the still open window and dried her wings in the same way. She went back to the door that she had entered into the public way before. Buzz avoided the guards the same way she had before.

Looking around the first floor led her to the guard rooms first. She glanced heard the talk of the few guards as they were about to switch duties. That place won't have any good items to take. She walked into a room that was silent and saw tons of armor and weapons that were not quite as fancy and looked more used. Guess this is where they store the stuff for the guards... Won't be much here. She then came upon some less fancy rooms that had the feeling of not being lived in. These rooms were not mad quite as well. Buzz looked over some of the bed clothes and shook her head thinking, Too much to have any value. There were some vases in the rooms and they weren't too big so they were easy to carry with her.

She continued her search avoiding patrols by hiding in small areas that no one else could stay in. When some guards were distracted by talking to a patrol about the helmet that was way out of place upstairs, she poked her head in a doorway that was slightly open and saw a large empty room. She walked squeezed in without moving the door at all. She gazed around the room it was covered in banners of things she didn't recognize. There was also a large fancy chair at the end of the room. She gave an almost imperceptible gasp when she saw it and quietly moved up to it. It's COVERED in Gems! She thought with excitement. She suddenly pulled out a small knife and pried a few of the gems off the chair placing them carefully in the small jars she had taken.

She hadn't realized it at first, but she had started feeling an attraction as she walked into that room. She poked her head around the throne and quickly pulled her head back before she was seen by the two guards standing by a door behind the throne. That HAS to be the treasure room or some big secret of the ruler! She thought to herself excitedly. But how to distract them? She glanced around herself and pried one more gem off the throne before taking a large breath and tossing the gem as far as she could towards the door she had just came in. The noise of the gem clattering to the floor attracted the guards from behind the throne as well as the ones from outside. Fortunately for Buzz, the ones from inside reacted first and she moved around the edges of the throne to the door while they rushed forward to investigate the noise.

She moved quietly up to the door only to find it locked. She pulled out her tools for unlocking doors and undid the lock feeling like she had to see what was inside this door. She started to feel like she could do anything if only she got to whatever was behind the door. She unlocked the door before the guards came back and shut the door behind her before looking ahead to what she had uncovered. It was a long hallway that ended in a small room containing a glowing red sword. She started to walk forward drawn to it. As she moved closer she started seeing images in her head of herself with everything she had ever wanted just because she had that sword beside her and in her hands.

This must be what is keeping the ruler on his throne! The sword does everything he wants and he doesn't have to do a thing. I must have it! It will help me escape from the palace and even get off the streets to above the life I had with my parents alive.... Her thoughts were racing as she walked as if dazed towards the sword. Unfortunately for her in some ways, there were magical wards placed all along the hallway so that no one could get to it without alarms ringing through the whole palace. She passed one and the alarms went off and the door was slammed open revealing the guards at the door.

“Buzz!?!” One of them shouted incredulous. That snapped her out of her daze as she glanced back and realized that she had to go if she was to get out of there without them locking her up or punishing her in some other way. She turned fully towards the guards and flew directly at the face of the guard that looked more angry than surprised. He ducked as she expected and she went over her head as the guards tried to catch her with their hands. She has had so much practice with maneuvering around hands she easily avoided them. The time for sneaking is past. They've seen me and recognized me so I just need to get out of here. It's time to fly all the way out. The servant's quarters will make a good place to get lost in and the kitchen window should still be open. She thought seriously as she flew out the large doors that led into the throne room since the guards were opening them to come to the aid of the ones inside of the room. These guards were too surprised to try catching her, but soon the cry went up to catch the flying thief who tried to get the sword.

She was able to avoid them with difficulty, and make it to the door to the servant's quarters ahead of them so as to swing it open and dart to the kitchen and out the window. She then dashed directly to the fence and climbed over it and was well on her way back towards the Tree House before the guards could either get out of the kitchen window or get to a door.

One couldn’t have asked for a better moment. Guards were running to and from. Something big had happened apparently, something other than the demon in the streets. Perhaps another demon had invaded the palace, or perhaps the same one. It didn’t matter, Rimoru had a mission to do.

She missed her old status, a status she had carried with her for centuries. Worshipped by most of her citizens, the ability to get anyone and anything she wanted, and godlike powers. All of it gone in a flash for doing what was “right”. Her empire no longer existed, now under the hands of low-rate nobles too young to know what exactly anyone fought for and who participated in it. Except for one…who held the Sword of Valtrox….

She had no respect for the fire god. He ultimately was responsible for her downfall. She herself, with her infinite knowledge, had no idea how he did it, how she lost her power, but she knew what she wanted and what she needed, both one and the same.

The dethroned empress pulled her dark blue cloak closer to her body and slowly trudged to the palace, using a simple spell to make her ethereal for only a few seconds- being all she could muster now a days. Enough time for her to get through the heavy steel bars of the fence. She rested against the wrought iron bars, catching her breath and regathering her magical abilities, knowing full well that the worst was yet to come.

Two minutes later, she slipped behind a wandering patrol, her soft-soled boots barely making a noise as she darted behind a tree near the front door. Again, she closed her eyes and mustered some of the magical energy to allow her a small scrying spell, just barely allowing her to glance behind the large doors and see about four guards holding watch, not flinching from their duty as the occasional servant wandered through to attend to an unknown duty.
Gonna need another way… Rimoru thought to herself with a quiet huff. When she accepted this mission, she didn’t know exactly what she was getting herself. If she was given the option now rather than when she had been giddy from having a bit of fun, she would think it suicide…but with even more thought, she would agree it was what she needed. She needed to get what she deserved, power and her old status back and her previous fling had presented her with the solution to her lack of power. It was risky, very risky, and very odd- something rare that not many can do. Especially of this caliber…but if she succeeds, and she had better or it is all over, she was going to get what she deserved.

With a quick glance around, she stole to a lit window nearby, hopes that it was unlocked or open. She crouched low in the shadows, pulling her cloak closer to herself again as she watched another patrol go by. With a glance up, Rimoru could not see any opening in the window and had no idea how these windows worked. She cursed inwardly for not being near the newest models of houses and accessories anymore and vowed that when she regained her power, if she did, she would merely conjure up her old palace. Perhaps conjure it on this shoddy mockery of a palace.
Concentrate, Rimoru… she thought to herself, refocusing on the task at hand. She peered along the wall, trying to find another hole she could hop into. She walked alongside the wall, hiding within the shrubbery when the occasional patrol marched by. It was lucky for her, however, as it seemed most of the guards had gathered at the main gate and marched out of the palace grounds with time. This was certainly a good night to achieve her goals. In fact, it may be the best bet, unless one of those infernal demons decided to assault the palace head on.
With many frustrating thoughts, curses, and grumbles, Rimoru finally found an open window near the back of the palace. It looked to be a window to the kitchen, or at least a kitchen of sorts, most likely the servant’s kitchen. She gently opened the window, let her feet search for a sturdy branch on the nearby bush and pulled herself in. With a quick glance ahead of her, she failed to notice the young girl eating a late dinner to the right of her..
“An assassin!” the servant girl yelped, leaping up from her seat.
“Shush, fool!” Rimoru yelped, clamping a hand on over the servant’s mouth. The girl seemed to ignore her order, annoying the former empress to no end with her muffled scream, in which she regretfully sent the girl into a minor coma. She would awaken in a day or two, however her head will be hurting when she did wake up, as when she collapsed, Rimoru could not hold onto her and the poor serving girl’s head slammed into the table. When leaning over to see if she was alright, she caught her reflection off a shiny metal pan. She paused over it and pushed back her blonde hair, staring at the bright blue eyes staring back at her. Her lips formed into a thin frown as she traced a few wrinkles along her cheeks. It seemed her age was catching up on her…too fast.
With a depressed sigh, she turned her eyes from the pot and walked out the door silently, watching for guards as she made for the pillars, dodging any other passerby that walked the hallways, servant and guard. Her magic was almost spent and she needed every last bit for her objective. She crept to a doorway and gently pushed it open, glancing out cautiously. There was no one walking the hallway, so she slipped through the door and ran to another pillar, glancing around the sights. Looks like the throne room… she thought as her eyes met the finely-crafted rug of a regal purple color with gold thread woven in to make intricate designs. She took the time to actually study the columns that stood in rows lengthwise across the throne room. They too had gold gilding along the tops that swirled and swooped. The section of the column facing the carpet held a face, someone she knew quite intimately. The Patriarch… her eyes turned to the other faces along the pillars, Lorathin, Ar’mai, Cadeyrn, Shara, Harlin, Minos, Ixair, me… her eyes stopped at her face, looking it over. The likeness was amazing but it only served to frustrate her now. She was no longer the person she was. She had lost too much…her youth, her power, her-Concentrate, Rimoru!
She closed her eyes to shake off her thoughts. She had to finish this or else she would never achieve her goal. And this was her last and only time to do so. She cannot stop and cannot fail. If she did, she had limited time to live the miserable life she does now. And that wasn’t the life for her. She took a few deep breaths before she opened her eyes and cleared her thoughts. Just in time too, as she heard armored footsteps approaching from the right.
With a quick burst of speed, she darted across the room, stepping across the regal rug and behind pillars on the opposite side, where she hugged the column, letting her ears track the movement move past the location she had been just a second ago. With a sigh of relief, she quietly continued towards the large elegant throne, covered in plush purple pillows that matched the designs of the rug. Elegant gold carvings appeared as tendrils intertwining and criss-crossing along the arm-rests and up the back where it formed a battle scene along the top, a demon-lizard man holding a large sword against a massive three-horned dragon- Sarik and Valtrox. Her eyebrows raised in slight surprise at the armrests- they appeared to be missing gems. Maybe it’s the new style these- She inwardly cursed again, realizing that she was in a very distractible mood. Without another moment to admire the designs of the throne room, she treaded lightly behind the throne to where she was told the door was…and they were there, all six guards…four more than what she was told to expect.

How in all the god’s names am I supposed to get through that? Her lips curled into a scowl as she tried to come up with a plan to get her past all those guards and to her goal without getting hurt or not having any magic left to cast the spells she needs to. She sighed quietly as she looked herself over, smoothing out the wrinkles on her clothing and perking up her assets before she walked seductively over to the men guarding the door. “Good evening, gentlemen.”

The guards turned at once to look at the newcomer, surprised anyone was here at this hour, especially after the disruption of the little sprite named Buzz. “Ma’am…” one of them said as he traced the curves of her body with his eyes, an action everyone followed suit with. She was a pretty woman, even with a few wrinkles. She had all the right curves in all the right places. She had bright blue eyes that were filled with a confident, perhaps even cocky glint to them, encompassed by supple, full lips that glistened in the candle-light, and smooth tan skin. She gently pushed her chest forward, giving the guards a good view of her endowments…and getting the result she wanted exactly.
The real Rimoru smiled as she snuck past the guards while her illusionary double handle the men. A task she would have enjoyed doing herself many years ago and something she doesn’t do much anymore. She gently opened the doors and walked in, the smile growing wider as she saw the gleaming red sword- the item that has ruined Valtrox and the cultists. But there was more to this sword than its accomplishments.
Images formed in Rimoru’s mind, similar to ages past. With that sword, she was young again, power emanated from her as rows upon rows of people worshipped her, serving her every need, her every desire. Her smile widened into almost a sadistic grin as she advanced further in, the sword seeming to fill her with strength with every step. Then just as suddenly, the images stopped.

Rimoru paused and glanced around. Wards…I almost forgot… She reached within her cloak and pulled out a small leather pouch and dipped her fingers in it. When she pulled her fingers from the pouch, they had a blue tint to them, a very fine powder and a very rare and expensive one at that. She scooped up some more with her hand and began to rub it over her body. It was a quick job, but it should work, or at least that’s what the man said who gave it to her. She smiled as she took a deep breath…and walked closer to the sword. Nothing. Another step…again, nothing. Her smile widened with each step. She couldn’t believe it, she was about to do it! Nothing stands in her way now. She will be returned to glory!
Her blue tinted hand gripped the blazing hot hilt of the Sword of Valtrox as she began to chant an ancient spell, one that even Rimoru had never heard of before.
Greetings, Rimoru came a deep, basso voice from inside her head. One she had heard before, a voice that struck fear into his enemies and respect from his allies. I see you have come to know the error in your ways. I am a solution to all you problems. With me at your side, this world will be yours…and mine.
“I know Valtrox…You are my solution,” Rimoru replied as she finished with her chant, her smile growing as the sword began to lose its glow. A humanoid figure began to fade into view in front of her, the fiery outline the only visible sign of his presence. “But, like me, dear Valtrox, we have been deposed. This world is indeed mine…but I’m afraid I’ll have no room for you, Valtrox. Not in my world.”

The outline cocked its head and began to speak when suddenly the god screamed. His outline began to shiver and lose its shape. Fire began to burst away from his form but the odd thing was the fire formed tendrils that searched for Rimoru’s form.

She let out a short, cruel laugh as she lifted her arms to either side of her and opened her hands wide, her cloak drifting to her side, revealing her tall, well-formed body. The fire tendrils multiplied, some reaching for her hands while others appeared to move for her nostrils. It was as though the dethroned empress was taking the power of the mighty god. Rimoru closed her eyes as she reveled in the stolen power, her figure beginning to hover from the rush of power. Her hair began to flare up, sparks running up and down the lustrous strands. Her eyes glowed even underneath her eyelids as her cloak even began to burn away.

“All this power…I never even knew it felt so…wonderful,” the ex-empress laughed, an eerie echo trailing behind her every word. “It feels even better than I expected!”

Yet all Valtrox could do was suffer and whither away as the woman he had destroyed tens of years ago took her revenge…and his power, perhaps even his very essence. All he could do was scream as he escaped one torture and ended with his demise…

Time passed and soon her illusionary double began to fade from view. The guards, who were enjoying their time with the fake-Rimoru suddenly jumped in surprise and horror as they turned to the sword room. Immediately they shuffled into the room, weapons drawn. What they saw shocked all of them. They saw the Sword of Valtrox lying off its pedestal…but it appeared to be a regular blade, the red glow absent from its gleam. But what got the guards gasping in surprise was the fact that no one existed in the room…
*************************************************************************

“Find the thief!” a gruff voice barked from a nearby street. The baying of dogs soon followed as footsteps grew closer behind her.
How am I going to get out of this? Dogs can’t follow scent in water too well…It’s raining, it shouldn’t be hard to find a pool or stream of water running downhill away from the palace, right? The pint-sized thief thought as she glanced around in terror. Why did I get myself into this…and why did I get caught? They recognized me, how can I get out of this? Where can I go for safety? If I can only get to the tree house or another safehouse. Even if I can hide in a safehouse for a few days…or a week…or two…I don’t know if I can stand two.
Buzz jumped in surprise as a blast of thunder resounded through the streets, shaking windows and her courage. No time to worry about lightning…I have big dogs to worry about… She looked back at the shadows of a few dogs as another streak of lightning flashed across the sky, creating menacing shadows.
She passed by a few more streets before she noticed one gently sloping downwards, towards the docks- and safety. She paused to catch her breath, setting the vases down in front of her. Her eyes danced between the two as she realized what she needed to do. I worked to collect those pretty hard…there wasn’t much in the palace that someone my size can take… With a heavy sigh, she dug out a few of the prettier gems and pocketed them before kicking the vase in the direction she had been running, hopefully to buy her enough time to get to the Tree House. She picked up her second vase and began to run down the trickle of water down the sloping road.
“Buzz!” came a shout from a nearby alleyway- a man wearing a guard’s uniform.
George! A friendly guard! Buzz thought happily.
“Get back here! I’m not letting you get away with stealing from the palace! I thought you knew better!” George the guard shouted as he took off towards Buzz.
As Buzz continues to run, she scoops a couple of the gems out and pockets those as well, flinging the vase at an odd angle, spraying the remaining gems across the street. George paused at this, his mind torn at what was the priority. Perhaps it was his kinder heart that let Buzz go or perhaps it was his job on the line that made him decide to gather the gems.
Buzz sighed in relief as she continued to bolt to the docks, sticking to the shadows as long as she remained in the water. She turned another corner as she began to enter more familiar territory. The buildings started to look shabby and dirty, along with the accumulated trash along the streets. She bounded up a small hill of refuse and gave a mighty leap, beating her wings to glide a bit farther down the street and give her tiring legs a small rest before she fell back to her feet to continue pounding down to safety.
As she noticed the tree house was only a few blocks away, two dogs and a guard skidded into view, immediately noticing the little trixie on front of them. Buzz skidded to a halt, her eyes going wide in fear as they took in the vicious teeth of the dogs. She glanced over her shoulder to the right, a common escape route for her when she was being chased down the street by guards…or street kids…or Old lady Neta, when she steals Neta’s delicious home made Nettleberry pie. She dove expertly through the gap in the fence and darted towards the opening on the opposite side. She crawled through the small hole and ran at full speed, as fast as her tiny legs could carry her, down the block. One more block to go! I’m almost there to fame, respect, fortune…and safety! Which I’d take right now! She glanced back as she heard the dogs trying to get through the fence and a few guards shouting out to any nearby guards available. She briefly wondered if George had finished gathering up the baubles but decided that he would need daylight to find them all. I think one of them flew into a bush…maybe that’s payment for the Jenkin’s for stealing their grandmother’s brooch. I hear they got it back…after it went through a few shopkeeper’s hands… As she smiled at their marvelously good luck, she noticed a shadow in the side doorway of the Tree House.
Her partner in crime, at least for the beginning of this escapade, stood there, beckoning her onwards, his hand propping the door open behind him. “Hurry up, Buzz. They’re gaining!”
Buzz glanced behind her shoulder, her eyes widening again as she pushed her tired legs even further. She gave a brief smile as she made it within diving distance to the door. If she didn’t make it inside, her fellow thief will push her. She closed her eyes in victory as she dove in between his legs and to safety.
Until she smacked into the closed door. The teenage thief picked her up and said, “Do you have the treasure?” as he eyed the approaching guards.
“Get me in!” she panted, showing one of the gems.
“Only one? I need to see them all!”
“No, after we’re in,” Buzz panicked, beginning to struggle to get free from his grip.
“You’ll jeopardize the tree house. We need to make sure that you have the goods so at least we may be able to buy off the guards!” the thief replied urgently.
Buzz, needing to escape, performed a daring maneuver she had seen the dogs do before and bit down as hard as she could on the thief’s hand, aiming for the flap of skin between his thumb and his index finger.
The thief yelped in surprise as he released the young Buzz. The pint-sized girl flapped her wings tiredly as she glided towards her other escape route that she used to avoid Captain Burg, when she stole some of his small fish. She once again made herself as thin as possible, bringing her wings as close to her body as they could go, before she smacked into something soft. She wearily opened her eyes to see an upside down thief that she knew commonly worked with the other that she had just escaped from.
“Over here!” the kid called to some guards as they began to walk over to her.
In her dizziness, distress, and fear, she let out a squeak and shrunk to an inch and a half tall, her clothes collapsing around her. She heard the kid shout in surprise and begin feeling around her clothes. Being an expert at dodging fingers, she darted past the indentations that were created by his probing fingers and found a small pocket within her sleeve that she stored her tiny clothing in. She pulled that out and quickly bounced into her bag-like clothing and soared out the sleeve opening. Her wings had some time to dry, not to mention they rubbed against her clothing a bit so she was able to gain the speed she needed to avoid the many hands and chomping jaws of the guards and their dogs as she flew off towards the “Protected” Neighborhood dodging into open windows and under overhangs to keep her wings somewhat dry and hoping against all probability that the mysterious protector may take her under his care....
The kid who had stopped her last smiled as the guards were distracted and quickly pocketed her treasure. He had quite a story to tell, being the one who entered the palace and all…
************************************************************************************

Wizard Aldios had traveled several months to reach the famed land of Lustria. He knew he could find what he was looking for in this legendary land. After the apocalyptic battle that helped determine the fate of the land, it had fallen into somewhat of a slump. It was almost as bad as his homeland of Belodron, which was being held in check by a single thread- a thread Aldios was trying to strengthen.

While the magnificent cities that he heard about as a child were no longer in existence, he knew the land still bred the heroes it was famous for. In ages past, the god-dragon Dominatistradz, an unstoppable force with powerful friends to back him up, guarded the world from evil. Then as his sanity deteriorated, such heroes as the Patriarch, Inzikai, War chief Higsthor, and Rimoru made their marks on history. And after them, Sarik, Kalzog, Hel, Cadeyrn, Teralynn, Maverion, and Eva, among many others. Each age brought more heroes, and each age brought more adventure. Perhaps this would be the next great adventure for Lustrian Heroes. Aldios certainly hoped so; Belodron desperately needed it.

The wizard was dressed in a royal blue robe that glittered in the night. His similarly colored eyes were covered by thin round spectacles sitting atop the bridge of his thin, well-sculpted nose. His nose rested above a neatly trimmed moustache that gradually formed into a thin white beard hugging his chin. White hair cascaded down to his shoulders along his back, underneath his hood that soaked up most of the rain that poured onto him. It certainly was a terrible night to walk into Salvation but he believed it better that it rained now than it did while he was out at sea, hopefully with plenty of heroes to save his home.

He walked into the Angel’s Risk, a nicer looking Tavern with a view overlooking the beautiful palace where the mysterious ruler lived. Perhaps another day he would request an appointment with said ruler just to get a glimpse as to who may be running this city and why it wasn’t as glorious as it could be. He already noticed the slums stretched quite a distance, a majority clustered around the dockyards. Then again, his escort informed him that the nobles that lived in the mansions around the city center were the real power within the city and the ruler doesn’t seem to stop them.
Aldios walked up to a man who looked to be the tavern keeper, sitting behind a bar talking pleasantly with a barmaid. He took off his hood and gave the keeper a cheerful grin and said, “My good sir, I wish to rent a room for an unknown length of time if possible. I have just come from a distance away and need a room to stay in as I try to gather up a few people.”
The tavern keeper sprung up from his chair, his grin growing wider at a potential customer as he opened his arms wide. “Of course!” he said happily, “This place is definitely the place to be, especially in a night like this! We haven’t had this bad of a storm since…last year or something. One of the other taverns nearby had a flooded cellar and who knows what kinds of damages it did down along the waterfront!” He opened up a record book and skimmed through a few pages before reaching under his desk and pulling out a set of keys. “We have the Ambassador’s Suite available, reserved for the best of the best, five gold per night usually, but business has been poor recently so I will allow five gold every three nights.”
Aldios dug in his pockets and pulled out some recently acquired native currency and counted it up before nodding his head. “I’ll take it then,” he said with a grin. “But before I retire to my room, I would like to know if you have any clue as to why guards are running around all over the place. It’s as if they are searching for something or someone.”
“Aye, they are looking for a demon here in town. It chased a man down the streets and up on top of the buildings, trying to kill him. I believe there’s gonna be a bounty on its head since it has been sighted here and there and the town’s worried it’s gonna bring an army to kill everyone in here.”

Aldios nodded slowly, gently stroking his beard. “Thank you, good sir,” he finally replied as he took the keys and walked up the stairs. And through the gloom, the silver lining still shines through. This bounty, perhaps it can be a test for people, for potential heroes. Perhaps I shall either find the one who succeeds in defeating this demon or find a someone to do so for me. Either way I find at least one person who has some skill that may be useful. Yes, this night may not be as bad as it seems…
With that Aldios smiled at nothing in particular before he arrived to his room, ready to finally get a good night’s rest on a comfortable bed.

"We can't take him with us. There's no telling what we'll encounter, and no doubt that there are a number of people who would profit from his harm."

"Ma'am, permission to ask why?"

"Speak freely, I am no longer your queen."

"You fufilled your objective; Valtrox has been crushed. Why not rebuild your nation here? Lustria needs you."

"The people here are beyond saving thanks to my actions, but there is someone I can still make right with."

"Marlene, we should really be going."

"Marlene!?"

"I'll explain that to you sometime later... just, just be sure you take good care of him."

"Aye ma'am."

The same dream of faceless exposition, which Lawfer has awakened to all his life. A blur of unrecognizable shapes and coarse voices. Sitting upright in his heavily padded bed he took a moment to collect himself. Too consistant to be a dream, too blurry to be a memory; the only logical conclusion is that it's a sign from the gods. But for what? From which one? Before he lets his mind run rampant with conclusions he dismissed the vision as a nightmare.

A brief glimpse outside revealed a setting sun barely visible from above the trees. Most people would try to sleep during the night and hide in the shelter of the light. Then again, most people didn't go out looking for the things that roam the wasteland swamps at night. Like roosters of the morning, the demons howled madly in the distance at the coming darkness. While their cabin at the edge of Salvation was quite humble, it was not built with the intent of impressing anyone. Few ever had the courage of living so close to the wastes.

Shining plate armor, a gift that simply arrived one day many years ago. More peculiar was the unusual polearm that came with it. There was no point, only a perfectly bent double bladed hook on the end. It didn't curve like a blade either, the three sides were bent perfectly at 90 degrees; the craftmanship was nothing short of divine.

"As the gods have given me the tools, I shall see their work be done." Lawfer prayed to himself before stepping from his room. He only needed to wait for his partner.

Viral, or Tox as he had been known as by his former queen, had settled down to do his final duty. He had no idea where his leader had gone off to, nor if she was alright. He hoped for the better and knew that was the most he could do.

Every evening he lay awake, wasting away as he contemplated how to make life better for the boy. He never was a parent, nor did he ever really imagine himself as one. Sure he had his crushes and day dreams about having a wife but rarely was a child involved. He let out a small sigh as he closed his eyes and placed his hands on his forehead. The grizzled war veteran had survived countless horrors from all sides in the war that ravaged Lustria and left it the reeking husk that it now was. He lost too many friends in that war, both mentally and physically, and it left him with even more scars. He opened his eyes and peered at his arm, a slight green tinge to it- a remnant from his cultist days when he was a mere toy to be experimented on by the maniacal cultist leader, Inzikai. He did have to admit he could not complain of it; it was a side-effect of poison immunity to a point where even the most potent chemicals were rendered harmless to his body. This gave him the luxory of being able to walk through poison gas clouds to ambush Drakonian soldiers as their dragon masters crushed life from...

He groaned again as he sat up, several bones in his aging back creaking. He reached for a nearby bottle and took a gulp from the caustic liquid within. A potent alcoholic brew that burned the throat about as much as it burned bad memories and the liver (that is, if he wasn't so resistant to the alcohol). He stole a glance out the window and gave a small grin. It was his favorite time of day- the time when he got to spend quality time with Lawfer and hopefully imbed his teachings on the kid...or tell stories, either worked, and either kept them happy. He got up slowly and leaned out the window before he heard the creaking of the wood that signaled his adopted child was ready.

He got up from his old, creaky bed and walked over to the mirror, brushing his hands over his short-cropped hair and examining his newly sprouted beared. It certainly made him look old, but he was getting on in his years as it was and he had little fight left in him. But he could still handle a fight, Lawfer made sure to test him on that most days, especially after he realized that Viral was not the best melee fighter. He walked over to his closet and opened the doors to reveal his old suit of heavy armor. That armor was the sign of many deaths in the Gate War, the alien design, the gunmetal mask, the bulkiness of the suit. He could not move fast but many people called it the juggernaut armor since the wearer could take a beating before going down. He ran his hand gently along the chest plate, occasionally rubbing off a small layer of dust, thinking about better times in Lustria. While he enjoyed the feel of the armor both inside and out, it was no longer feasable for him to use, nor was it decent for Lawfer. Not that the boy needed it, for he had much nicer armor that he got as a gift, some time ago.

No, this armor was not for Lawfer. It didn't allow the mobility melee fighters needed these days. And it was this exact reason he was not donning it. He had instead donned is lighter, hard leather armor, strapping a few knives along handy places in case he needed a weapon in a pinch. He then pulled a belt from its hanger, a worn and flimsy sheath attached to it, and tightened it around his waste.

He then unlocked another compartment, using a key he kept in his pillowcase, revealing a nice collection of weapons, all polished and like new, except for an exotic weapon that appeared to be a simple sword handle. But many Gate War Veterans knew that it was far more than a sword handle and those that served Hel knew that it was much deadlier than the average of its type. Back in the war, it was a gun, powered by an explosive powder, unlike the Iskani counterparts that ran off steam.

These days, much of that knowledge has disappeared. Guns are all but extinct in idea and form. But Viral saved his for defensive purposes. His could prove deadly to wielder and target if used by untrained hands and so he aimed to keep it away from anyone. The only other one who knew about it was Lawfer and perhaps even Cadeyrn and Hel. But Viral did not allow the boy to handle the weapon, much to Lawfer's frustration, out of worry. Viral's gun was just as likely to spray poisonous fumes on the wielder as it was on the target, especially being as old as it was.

With a grunt, he pulled out his trusty old demon-hunting longsword, which had kept him alive thus far (with Lawfer's help) and sheathed it. Without another thought, he closed and locked the weapon compartment, and then closed his closet before walking out to meet the boy.

"Ready to do some more hunting tonight? Maybe some old housewife found a demon eating children and the bounty for demon horns has gone up," he chuckled as he walked into the room, rechecking his armor, making sure it was all fitted and buckled right, before doing the same for Lawfer.

A heavily bandaged figure blazed a path down the streets and alleyways of Salvation, trampling drunkards and whores out of his way with a wild abandon. This was a man who apparently needed to fulfill some sort of appointment. A series of yells echoed through the streets; the man, figuring he couldn’t waste any more time, ran down a tight alley and began to climb, using windowsills and loose bricks as footholds until he reached the rooftops. Bounding from building to building, the man suddenly saw the source of the commotion flying upwards; the outstretched wings of a soaring demon blazed past him, shooting for the heavens.

“NO!” Zyergi Zyerga snarled in frustration. He put a hand into his coat to withdraw a wickedly curved throwing knife, but the figure was gone before a throw could be made. It’s the wrong one…he didn’t have wings last time. Slumping onto the rooftop in desperation, he felt something white-hot creeping up his body. Gritting his teeth, he suddenly seized with pain, jerking backwards and forwards while letting out a scream fit for a demon. His entire being burned with an unseen fire…

Fifty years ago…Valtrox’s defeat…Rimoru City, destroyed…Lustria, a shell of its former self…

Another flash.

Forty years ago…Zyergi can see himself moving stealthily through a network of caves. Rumor had it that a demon had made it’s roost here; there was no sign of anyone but himself, though. As he penetrated deeper and deeper into the caves, he began to pass obviously inhabited caverns. A tall pedestal holding a small crystal orb stood before him. Smiling, Zyergi picked up the ball, which flared red as he touched it, and slipped it inside his coat.

Zyergi was on the ground now, spasms of pain circulating his body. Another flash of memory…

Zyergi hadn’t even made it out of the caves. A dark figure, whose arms were covered in spines, stood over him. It’s tail slid around his neck and held him up to eye level, examining him closely. Zyergi could feel it reach into his coat and withdraw the small orb delicately. The demon, for that obviously what the thing was, touched Zyergi’s forehead with a single clawed finger, whose body started to shake uncontrollably...

The pain leaving his body, Zyergi stumbled to his feet. He could still hear the shouting and running of guards on the street below. Shaking the confusion away from his head, he grunted as he slid his knife back into it's belt sheath. Forty years of living with a curse, and not a sign of the demon who placed it on him. Zyergi had spent a fortune in gold to get any information on the beast, and it had led him to Salvation of all places. Ironic...As for now, it wouldn't be of any use to him perusing this new demon.

A tiny, almost unnoticeable flash of orange suddenly caught Zyergi's eye. Something extremely small was floating quickly through the air several blocks away; he could hear the sound of guards yelling in frustration. It seemed that Demons weren't the only things causing trouble in Salvation this night. Feeling his strength return to him, the bandaged man leaped to another rooftop towards the slight glow. He would search every single house in Salvation for his quarry if he needed to...Xanathanos, if that truly was the name of his foe, would not escape unscathed.

Salvation. An ironic name. It was here that Xanathanos and his demon brethren met defeat when their unstoppable god was stopped by that traitor. It was from here that he fled with disgrace from the fragile little mortals and their allies to meek out an existence pillaging and terrorizing undefended villages and towns. And now, half a century later, it was here that he sought his redemption, his salvation.

Xanath crouched over the edge of a rooftop, watching the people in the dark streets and the homes below. "Watching", perhaps, was not the appropriate term, as his eyes were closed.

The thick rain clouds that hung above blanketed the city in ebony, save for the fires burning in the homes and the lamps spaced out along the city streets. But whatever hid in the shadows of the night stood out all the more to Xanath as their own body heat betrayed them, glowing brightly against the blue-black backdrop.

He was not concerned that anyone would see him, given the darkness and his location several stories up. And should the occasional flashes of lightning give away his presence to those looking up at the right moment, all they would see was the silhouette of a cloaked figure. There were already plenty of those in this area of the city, and another one would not draw a second glance from anyone.

At the intersection of two smaller streets, a thin, almost sickly woman beckoned a passerby with finger. The man saw her and joined her under the overhang of the second story of the building that protected her from the rain. She started getting very touchy with him, and the heat signatures on the man rose in almost every part of his body. Slipping her hand into his, the woman led him to down the street a short distance and into an alley, where Xanath sensed clearly the bodies of two other men lying in wait. When the woman took her prey into the dark corridor, the waiting men jumped the victim and knocked him out with a swift blow to the head. Without wasting a moment, they patted through his clothes for anything valuable.

A little boy, perhaps five years of age or so, walked by the alley and paused when he heard the muffled sounds coming out of the shadows. He peered into the blackness and started when his eyes adjust enough for him to see the scene before him.

The woman and her cohorts looked back at the boy. Had this been any other section of the city, the men may have knocked the kid around and threatened him not to say anything. But these man knew better than to do that here. They've heard the stories and likely have seen firsthand what happened to those who harmed some of the children in this part of town. Maybe this boy was one of those protected children, or maybe not. They weren't going to risk it.

The boy, too, knew his place. He just looked away and kept walking as if he saw nothing in that alley. This was a place where you minded your own business and kept your mouth shut, guardian or no guardian.

Xanath pretended like nothing happened as well. If an idiot decided to sneak into a dark locale so that he could play with a stranger's body and get himself into trouble, then that was his choice to make.

His gaze turned elsewhere, where he saw a commotion stirring in a distant part of the city. It was too far away for his heat senses to determine what was happening, but as long as it stayed far away, he was not going to give it much more thought...until he noticed one of those heat signatures soaring up into the sky and flying away. That was certainly uncommon.

Some time later, he heard footsteps racing up the stairs that led to the rooftop he was on. Glancing around, he saw a girl a dozen years in age burst onto the roof, breathing hard. It was Nalia, one of the first children he ever protected after arriving at Salvation several years ago. Perhaps she might have been the very first child he saved - he couldn't remember. All of those human faces looked alike back then. In any case, she was now the eldest among his protected. There used to be ones older than her, but they all either left the group of their own accord or were kicked out.

"Xanth!" She was the only one who called him that. All of the other children used Xanath. "I heard there was a demon attack. Are you okay?"

She was also the only one who knew his true nature. The other children only ever saw his cloaked form in the shadows.

"I was not involved," Xanath said in his deep bass.

"Another demon got into the city?"

"It would appear so."

"How?"

"I do not know. But the city walls are not impenetrable by demons - I got through them before." Xanath's head then snapped toward the palace and his hands clutched tightly onto the edge of the roof to steady himself.

"What's wrong?" Nalia asked.

"Valtrox?" the demon whispered, too quiet for Nalia to hear. Regaining his composure, he looked back to the girl and said, "I...I do not know. Tonight is not a normal night."

"Should I tell the others to get off the streets tonight?"

"Not yet. They need more time to get food for themselves, and the disturbances are still far away. It should be safe for now."

Nalia chewed on her lower lip.

"You wish to warn him?" Xanath knew she was thinking about a boy whom she had been spending a fair amount of time with recently. The boy was known as Dirk, and he was another street kid a couple of years older than Nalia. She recently began to fill out in certain areas of her body and the older boys started taking notice of her. Nalia had asked Xanath to place Dirk under his protection as well, but Xanath refused.

The girl hesitated before finally shaking her head. "He can take care of himself. He'll be fine." She sat down on the edge of the rooftop next to the demon.

Xanath returned to scanning the city. His thoughts were on his former god, as he sensed that something dealing with Valtrox just transpired in the direction of the palace. But what exactly, he did not know. The palace was also too far for his thermal vision to be able to pick up on anything, so he did not bother looking. He was tempted to leave this part of the city just for a little while so that he could investigate. But even with the unspoken agreement amongst the mortals here to not harass the street children in this area, Xanath still did not want to abandon his self-imposed post, especially with the strange happenings going on this night.

Something was zipping around near the corner of his vision. It was relatively small, and the heat signatures it gave off were reminiscent of those from the rapid beating of dragonfly wings. But this was neither the right time nor place for there to be dragonflies. Either way, a bug out of place was still just a bug.

He would have ignored it had it not come zooming straight at him. He pulled his arm across his chest and tried to backhand the creature to swat it away.

There was a loud series of cracks as Lawfer stretched his neck from side to side. Though just fifteen he already had the physique of a grown man. Unfortunately his soft voice and boyish features made people took away from his large build. His hair was now just barely above a stubble; running his hand over his head he smiled imagining it as a tiny field of golden wheat.

Viral, his guardian, was a war veteran and presumably friends with his parents. However, the old fart completely avoided the subject even at a hint. Truth be told, Lawfer never saw him much as a father figure, but moreso a much older brother. He was a teacher, but never quite a role model. The two were just too different people. Probably because Lawfer never respected him much as a fighter, but as a killer, there were no better to be found. Where Lawfer wrestled beasts head on; Viral dropped them without much effort. The fact that his parents trusted a man, who can best be described as an assassin born, with the welfare of their child only causes to doubt his own parent's moral integrity. As said about his killing prowress, so can be said of his friendship: no better can be found.

Lawfer raised his arms smirking as Viral checked his armor's holdings. Satisfied that in his meticulous nature would again defeat the veteran's inspection.

"Rumor has it that a demon was seen inside the walls of Salvation itself." He replied lowering his arms. "A fairly strong one too. I can only imagine what kind of bounty this abomination will fetch. Of course an old housewife would be one of the few people able to relate to you."

Buzz suddenly went tumbling backwards with a yelp as she was hit fairly hard. She struggled to get her flying back under control and barely got it before her wings were squished between herself and the very wet roof. What in the world? Who did that? I thought I wasn't going to hit anything. She turned around toward the thing that hit her and jumped slightly as she noticed it was a person with a girl standing beside them.
“Who are you two? People don't normally stand on roofs in the rain. What are you doing? Haven't you heard about the demon that came in the city? Do you know anything about that? It may not be a good thing to be out tonight. The guards are out.” Buzz suddenly seemed to realize what she just said and glanced towards the edge of the roof for half a second of silence and heard a few voices. They were talking about how some people seem to just disappear in this area and that they need to be careful. Drat that's Bremian's voice. The guards are still after me! She looked back to the two in front of her and, considering she hadn't really given them any time to respond, said just as quickly, “Do you know anyplace that the guards don't search around here? I haven't been in this area much. I really need to get out of the rain. It's not good for my wings and I don't know what the guards will do if they catch me. They're easily angered tonight. I know that. They don't give up even when you don't have any item that could be brought back. After all, you can't bring back memories. So do you know anyplace dry that a kid can stay safe in this area from the guards even when they're acting like they were bees and you had just stolen some honey?” She stopped to breath and look hopefully at the two, without getting within easy reach or even within reach if they tried to lunge at her.

Viral gave a short laugh and nodded. "Yes, I won't deny it. That old housewife was probably a beautiful young woman at some point, just as I was a strapping young gentleman at one point, something you always seem to forget. Heck, she may have even been one of the women I had a few wonderful nights with."

He gently pulled at a few of the straps and gave a satisfied grunt. Aanother day where the young boy flawlessly donned his armor. "You know, sometime I should see if you can get your armor on in under two minutes. You never know when you'll need to get right into your battle gear at the blink of an eye." He knew the boy could do it if he put his mind to it but it was something to occupy the kid and get him to think of different situations in which these skills would come in useful. He was, after all, a descendant of two important figures in the Gate War.

"So, any idea where the demon ran off to?" he asked suddenly, checking Lawfer's weapon and giving it a quick feel to make sure Lawfer had kept it sharp. "If this rumor is true, we'll be able to buy the palace itself, or at least a manor. Demons that cause trouble in Salvation are usually prime targets for many, especially other demon hunters. And we need to keep up our reputation of being some of the best." He gave the kid a sturdy pat on the back and walked to the cupboard where he pulled out a few rock-hard biscuits. He knew the kid hated them but they were a surprisingly nutritious and an old recipe he learned from the chefs aboard Hel's personal airship.

The thought of Viral's "wonderful nights" sent a visible shiver up the boy's spine.

"So that's how you got your green arm." Lawfer shoot back with a laugh; ultimately confident his armor and equipment was in pristine condition. Even though Viral was never quite a father figure or role model. It was still important that he be content with Lawfer. It was still imporant, even though Viral would never admit it, that he made him proud.

"Well rumors are very tenuous things." He continued. "But in substancial amount, they can be quite reliable. To be put bluntly: Anything to get out of the swamps and into the palace."

Lawfer found a rock, Viral often called 'biscuits', placed in his hand. The grimace on his face rivaled any death thrown expression.

Nalia gasped at the unexpected voice and would have fallen off the edge of the roof had Xanath's other hand not shot out to catch her. They both looked around at the source of the sound.

Xanath cocked his head, though the movement barely registered under the head hood of his cloak. The only thing he saw was the dragonfly, already considerably cooled off by the cold rain. Did dragonflies suddenly learn to talk?

Nalia could not see anything at all until a flash of lightning revealed Buzz. She got up and walked over to the little creature and leaned over, her hands propped just above her knees, to get a closer look at the chatty thing. When it finally stopped talking, Nalia asked, "What...are you?"

But it dawned on her just as she spoke those words. "You're from the Tree House, aren't you?"

Without needing an answer from Buzz, Nalia faced Xanath to explain, "It's alright. She's one of us."

"Bee, isn't it?" Nalia asked, returning her attention to the Trixie. "Oh, you poor thing, you must be tired. I'm sure there's a place our two you can hide out at around here."

Nalia glanced over to Xanath again, almost as if asking for permission. The cloaked figure did not move so much as a centimeter.

With a smile, Nalia turned back to Buzz. "Alright, let's get you out of this cold. I'm betting you must be hungry too? We don't have much, but what we do have we'll share with you while you hide out here. The stairs are over here."

She wasn't sure whether to pick up Buzz or to let the little creature move on its own, but decided on the latter.

Xanath remained as still as a statue as the two departed from the rooftop, and only went back to his vigil after the two girls disappeared from sight.

"Yeah, we heard about the demon attack," Nalia said as she guided Buzz down the decrepit stairs that groaned under each of her steps. "But I heard that it flew away, right?

“No it's not Bee. It's Buzz, at least that's what the other kids call me. Yes, I am from the Tree House.” Buzz took off and flew after the girl hoping to give her legs a bit more of a rest, but stayed slightly out of reach of this new girl. After all, two kids that she knew at least somewhat tried to grab her and perhaps turn her into the guards.

“I'm not too hungry. I picked up some food and ate it when I went into the pala-” She cut off in the middle of what she was going to say looking surprised and somewhat fearful. She paused for a moment, thinking, before saying, “Where I was last, but I accidentally got the guards angry and couldn't get back to the Tree House. One of the older kids was outside of it and betrayed me to the guards.” She paused when she heard that the demon flew away. “It flew away? I didn't hear that! I only heard that there was a demon in the town. Do you know anything else about it? I couldn't ask before cause the one who told us about it at the Tree House said we were all chicken and dared me to go into the palace and find out why the ruler was never seen and what he hid in there for.”

The little trixie suddenly stopped in mid-flight falling a little ways to the ground her face both surprised and slightly scared. Her hands were suddenly crossed in front of her mouth as if to hold it shut. Her eyes had widened farther and she backed up a step or two looking at the girl with worry and hoping that she didn't catch on to what she had just said. Oh no! What did I just do? She may think I still have anything I took from the palace. Drat, just as I was about to find someplace safe I think I'll have to run again... Her eyes grew somewhat sad at the last thought, but she started to glance around the staircase for a small hole or something to dive into.

Viral stifled a chuckle at Lawfer's face and idly placed his freehand over the hilt of his sword at his hip as he walked to the door and opened it for the boy. "Well, rumors can also be cleared up by a certain friend of ours." He followed the boy out and locked the door behind him. Salvation was not a city to keep your belongings unsecure. Definately not how people would expect a city called Salvation, especially considering the "Ultimate Evil" was stopped with millions of lives lost.

He carefully stepped out, took a huge breath of the musky swamp air and headed out to a small run-down shack that belonged to a young man who had probably tried nearly all types of drugs on the street and probably spent what little money he earned on getting them. But he never approached the boy to make friends but for information. The boy wasn't a great thief but he was great at gathering information. Perhaps he had connections, in fact Viral was sure he had connections of some sort, as some of the drugs the boy took were rare and harder to smuggle into Salvation than dragon eggs.

He rapped at the thin sheet of metal that served as the boys door and said, "Jeld, 'its Viral. We need information and we need it now."

The door opened quickly as a malnourished, short boy poked his head through the opening. "Demons? Aye, the demon that got into Salvation. I knew you two would be coming for that. 'Tis gonna cost ya, though. It was hard to get this information."

Viral flashed a few gold pieces and quickly shoved it into the boy's pocket, who gave the grizzled veteran a grin of blackened and missing teeth.

"Right, big demon. I mean, real big as in uh...Rothygut size. Can crush a horse's head without much thought. Big horns it used to gore a kid or two. Burned cloak and ripped up. Nice silvery swords. Was chasing a creature it called a demon. It had a mask and a black cloak...the chased 'demon', that is. The one you want, the one that is known to be a demon went into the Southern Forests. Uh...Demon's Bluff...aye. Watch out though, lots of demons in that area and not all of them have a bounty. By the way, Lord Quettle has put a bounty of two hundred gold to kill the demon. One thousand gold to bring it to him alive. Don't ask me why, if it were up to me, I'd have it killed."

Viral glanced at Lawfer and nodded as he turned around, ignoring the continued babble of the drugged kid. That was all he needed to know. "By the way, use that gold for food. You look terrible."

Viral walked over to the nearby stables to a tired old man who looked to be near Viral's age but not nearly as fit as the veteran. "We need horses, Jed," he called out as he walked to the horses they tended to use the most. "We're going to take them to Demon's Bluff. I'll pay you in full for the horses if they die but I doubt they will."

The old man followed behind them with a look of concern. He swore loudly once Viral finished and shook his head. "No! Charlene and Scarlet ain't goin' down there. They'll get eaten, an' you guys too!"

Viral shook his head and pulled out two more gold coins, quickly shoving it into the old man's hands, effectively silencing him. The old man still narrowed his eyes and shook his head but he no longer complained.

"Come, Lawfer, let's not waste any more time," the war veteran said, as he climbed atop Scarlet, the horse he usual took on longer trips. "Time is money, after all." He gave a grin before spurring his horse towards their catch. Like him, Scarlet was an older than her counterpart so Lawfer would catch up quickly, but it always gave Viral a small thrill to just ride as fast as possible and let the boy catch up.

Unfortunately, a storm had been brewing and now it appeared to be releasing its weight on the city in sheets of rain. So much for smoking Viral thought to himself as he fingered his pipe, an object of affection that he had with him even back when he was fighting for Hel. He glanced back at Lawfer and gave a grin, shouting over the rushing wind, "Looks like it's going to be a fun night!"
***
Thirty minutes of riding along the main roadway brought them to a massive forest. About a third of the forest was a burned mockery of its former glory, a mark that Valtrox granted as a curse to the god of nature. The forest will never recover and what beauty it had was stained by the many demons and bandits residing and fighting within.

"Now we have to find the beast..." he grumbled as he sought shelter underneath the dead trees. He dismounted from his horse and gently stroked its muzzle. He usually did not tie up the horses because they knew they had no where to run in most cases. They merely stayed in shelter and grazed on the sparse grass and shrubbery that grew here and there.

Viral trudged along the road as he unsheathed his sword and popped open a vial of blackish liquid that he had previously carried along his weapon belt. He gently tipped the vial over the blade of his sword and rubbed it along the edge, giving off a light sizzling sound. "Massive forest and one demon to find. This is harder than I anticipated...but it's just a day in the life, I guess."

Another hour passed as they wandered almost aimlessly through the forest, distant growls and shouts disrupting the songs of birds, crickets, and thunder. It was almost unsettling and occasionally brought Viral's thoughts back to the war. He could remember seeing his allies getting cut down by abomindible machines of war with thousands of whirring blades, hacking and slicing through the troops. He remembered the dragons swooping down and carrying away friends to rip them to shreds high in the sky or send them plummeting onto their comrades. He remembered the uneasiness he got from the demons that he worked with and the demons he fought against. He remembered Habdebza, the scourge of Lustria and perhaps the second biggest threat to the world, right under Valtrox, in his personal opinion. Sure, Dominatistradz was almighty, but he spoke his mind. He did not lie or cheat and manipulate like the shapeshifter. Heck, he didn't even know how the "Prince" of the underworld was destroyed, other than it involved a spectaculer explosion that literally wiped the location from the world. Nothing exists there and the ground is permanently blackened and hard.

He stopped suddenly and closed his eyes, rubbing them with his free hand. I hate Demon's Bluff... If the demons weren't dangerous enough, a wandering mind could spell the end of me and possibly Lawfer. Then again, Lawfer was good enough to get himself out of it if things get tough. He glanced at his partner relaxed slightly. Back to the grind...

He glanced around for any signs of demon activity and sighed as he moved a few fern leaves. Nothing...oh by all the gods...wait a minute! Just as he was about His eyes widened as he leaned in to see a small particle of black cloth...slightly burned. "Aha..." he said with a grin directed to Lawfer. "It appears our cloaked demon isn't as good at hiding as it thought!"

He pushed the shrubbery away and began to follow the trail of fine debris before it ended in a small clearing. THe burned cloak was lying against atop a rock next to a stream that led into a deep pond, along with a few very high quality daggers, family crests lining the hilts of the weapons. Viral cautiously strode to the weapons and frowned. He recognized the crests but he could not remember where, for the life of him. "I don't see the longsword. Keep looking around but don't move too far, Lawfer. Be careful, this one isn't a pushover, especially if it dared set foot in Salvation."

Nalia glanced back when she noticed that Buzz was no longer flying along after her. She caught the two mentions of the palace, of course, but gave no indication that she did. This was a place where you minded your own business, after all.

She recognized the fright on the little creature, as well as its darting looks. Nalia had seen them all too often in the faces of many other urchins who spoke too much and feared that they would be targeted by the other street kids for thievery, and it pained her to see yet another one showing such fright.

There was little to no honor amongst thieves when it came to the street kids living in the slums of Salvation. Nalia found herself fortunate to be among Xanth's protected, for he would not tolerate such behavior within the group. Stealing food to share with one another was fine, but going much beyond that was forbidden, especially if a protectee stole from another protectee. This was so ingrained in some of them, including Nalia, that they could not even imagine stealing from urchins from other groups that didn't abide by those rules. But not all of the protectees could follow those rules, of course - those were the ones who left the group or were forcibly removed by Xanth.

Nalia found that if an urchin from another group didn't want to trust you, there wasn't much you could do about it.

"The hallway we passed by has an open window at the end," Nalia said. "Or you could always fly back up to the rooftop. I doubt he would pay any attention to you as long as you leave him alone. But I wouldn't recommend flying into any of the rat holes here. Those things are rather aggressive. Except for Peetie, but he usually doesn't come up to this story anyway. I'm going to keep heading for the hideout. You can follow me if you want. It's up to you."

Buzz looked slightly surprised at the mention of an open window and seemed to relax as she gained a small thoughtful look. Why is she offering me a way out? Perhaps I can trust her. Why would she not want to take things from me? Perhaps I can trust her. I really do need somewhere to hide that's safe soon because I can't fly much farther and running isn't going to get me anywhere either with how much I've already done tonight. I can't deal well with mean rats either without getting big again, which I don't feel comfortable doing without clothes.... She hasn't made any moves to grab me or hold me either...Perhaps she could help me find something to wear that is around my big size too! It's so much more comfortable to sleep in my more normal size.

With a small, tired sigh, Buzz looked at the girl and said, “Who's Peetie? And who was the man that was up there? He was so quiet and still. I don't think I've seen anyone who grew up on the streets that still almost as if he knew everything that was around him and wasn't worried at all, even about the guards.” She paused as she carefully took off and hesitantly flew towards the girl landing gently on her shoulder. She still was ready to take off, but her exhaustion from her earlier exertions was catching up to her and it showed a little. After a moment she added a little hesitantly, “Also I'm more comfortable when I'm larger is there anyway we can find some clothes that would fit someone around 8 inches tall? I'll give them back as soon as it's safe to fly back to the Tree House.” She paused for another moment before saying, “I don't know your name, What should I call you?”

Zyergi leaped onto another rooftop, drawing closer and closer to the slight sparkle, still barely being able to make it out in the pouring rain. As he neared, whatever was glowing suddenly dissipated in to the building below, leaving only a tall, cloaked figure staring off into the distance. Odd...It couldn't be a guard, and odds were it wasn't the demon from before. An assassin, perhaps? Zyergi felt something strangely familiar about this entire situation.

Deciding to take a closer look, but not wanting to take the risk of being caught, Zyergi began to perform a complex series of spells. He was a very experienced thief and assassin, and had some formal experience as a spy; espionage came like a second nature to him.

"Animadverto," he whispered. His form slowly faded into the rain, become completely invisible. "Nidori." His scent dissipated, though he doubted it would have mattered in this rain. "Sanus." As long as he kept this spell up, any sound he would make would go unnoticed. "Aestus Estus." This was the trickiest one. In a sense, the spell completely wiped out his physical being, storing it inside a unique dimension-although that wasn't the best way to explain it-for the time being. He was little more than a spirit, as far as anyone was concerned. He jumped, testing out his new body, or lack of one. The woven patchwork of spells took a relatively large amount of energy to keep up; he would be visible again in a matter of minutes.

Floating silently through the storm, Zyergi tried hard to make out the mysterious figure, but couldn't see anything through his quarry's large cloak. Wondering what someone was doing standing the middle of a rainstorm, he edged around the figure, attempting to think of the best way to open the door to the stairs below him. He might be as silent as a ghost, but anything he interacted with would still be noticeable to the outside world.

Lawfer followed Viral obediently. Once the job got started he seemed to zone out. Thoughts were overridden by instincts. Morals silenced by survival. The people Viral knew and contacted made the boy disgusted, but he would never let it show. The job must get done at all costs he reminded himself. "No honor. No pride." He thought while quietly. "These people are just a single grade above the very demons we seek to exterminate."

As they plodded through the marsh; Lawfer wrapped his long brown cloak around himself lest the bright armor attract unwanted attention. Although the strategy called for Lawfer to distract the enemy, and Viral to end it swiftly, there was no reason to battle the entire wasteland. Not unless it would draw some kind of profit. He found that the more corrupt the beast, the worse the stench, and as he stalked closely behind Viral; the stagnant oder drew a sickening rage within the boy.

"Enemy" his mind cried.

The boy resisted the urge to recklessly charge the beast. His body began to burn wildly; every muscle twitched, every tendon clamped down, ever vein pumped recklessly.

"ENEMY" his mind screamed again.

Lawfer's breaths were becoming heavier and more frantic as he struggled to keep himself from blindly rushing this monster.

Viral felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end as he heard Lawfer's breath grow heavier. It was unsettling and got him slightly off edge himself. "Lawfer," he said, holding his free hand out to the boy. "Hush. Control yourself. Control gives you strength over your enemies. Control gives you power over your enemies. There is no strategy greater than control." It was an old mantra he heard before, from who he couldn't remember but it helped him relax a bit.

He glanced back at the regal looking weapons and picked up a dagger, feeling it with his, letting his palm grow comfortable with its feel. It was nicely balanced, unnaturally sharp, and gleamed beautifully as a flash of lighting blasted through the sky nearby, nearly making him jump. He cleared his throat and placed the dagger in his belt before turning to the child. "Follow me. I don't think the demon would have gone far, leaving his things behind."

Viral crept towards the stream and peered into the water.

"It isn't pleasant when your things go missing," came a quiet voice near the pool. It was surprisingly feminine and not the harsh gutteral voice that demons were infamous for. It even had a pleasant ring, a sound of youth and vitality, and would have been calming if it wasn't for the fact that the storm, the scary woods, and the many demons located around.

Viral jumped at that and spun around, his blade pointed towards the sound, only to drop ever so slightly. "Speak quickly, girl. Where is the demon that entered Salvation. That is its cloak, I know."

The girl's visible portion, her face, was beautiful by all standards. She appeared to be no older than twenty and had long silvery blonde hair that floated around her gently pointed chin and caressed her slightly pointed ears. Her high cheekbones framed her regal face, and her thin pointed nose was only an accent over her full lips. Yet what was most striking about her had to be her eyes; irises that were a dark, the color of blood. "I know of many demons in these woods, some decent, some that could use a lesson or two. I could direct you to some. And considering you are here, in the middle of a forsaken wood," she glanced up at the sky, "In the middle of a storm, looking for a demon to slay, you're likely demon hunters looking for a good hunt. Or money. I'm willing to say it is for money, though, but I won't bet on that, considering you, young boy, have an old geezer to follow around who I would imagine would be happily rocking away in a chair at home, remembering days long ago, or perhaps a terrible war that took its toll."

Viral narrowed his eyes a bit and took a step closer to the pond. "Last time, girl. Tell me where the demon is," he growled threateningly.

The girl gave a small thoughtful grin and said, "Alright. I'll show you the demon but..." her eyes drifted to a small pile of clothing by another pile of rocks. "I need a few things first."

Viral looked over at the clothing and turned to Lawfer. "Watch her and don't let her make any sudden movements," he said quietly, adding with a whisper, "Don't let your gaze wander. Although she doesn't fit the description of your archetypal demon, I don't quite trust her either. You never know, she may entrance you or try to seduce you to become her slave." He gave the boy a pat on the back as he walked over to the pile of clothing and began shifting through it.

"Dirty old man," the girl said with a small smile before her eyes turned to Lawfer. "So...how old are you? Seventeen? Thirteen? I can't quite figure it out and I have gotten semi-good at figuring these things out." She swam closer to Lawfer as another flash of lightning shined through the sky. "While I haven't tried seducing in a very long time, I don't see why it would be of any benefit to make you a slave of mine..."

Further up the stream from where the three were meeting Mhyr sat with his cloak over his head, sodden though it was with the rain cascading from above, it still kept it out of his eyes at least. He had been cleaning the stains of a demons blood from his armour and sword, their constant presence within these woods were proving troublesome, fortunately this one had fallen for his traps and had not been too hard to dispatch, but he would have to be wary of others, especially if they were working together.

As he finished he did his best against the rain to dry the delicately curved sword before he returned it safely to his sheath - it a useful weapon and far sharper and finer than his previous sword, it was far more flashy too, though he had taken it from a noble looking person, unlike that noble though, this sword was a blend of both style and substance, instead of just style.

His sensitive ears twitched as sounds of talking could be heard, even over the storm raging above them and quickly gathered his things, making sure that his large crossbow and hand crossbows were loaded and undamaged by the rain he slipped into the trees, moving stealthily towards the group as he strained to understand what they were saying.

It was difficult, but he could make out some words, definite talk of a demon, Hunters then, probably have something valuable on them, but may be quite skilled, he weighed up his options as he crept nearer, staying hidden in the bushes and examining the trio, an old man seemed to be in charge and had apparently partnered himself with a moderately young boy, though the boy looked heavily armoured and armed. The pair appeared to be harassing a woman who had been bathing in the pool, but he couldn't see the entire picture clearly from where he was.

Perching himself as comfortably as he could he settled in his hidden corner to watch the group and eavesdrop their conversation, hoping to learn something about what they were after, their intentions and if they had anything valuable. He rested his large crossbow carefully on a log and took precautionary aim at the youth, if this situation turned violent, then he was fairly confident the old man would prove no great threat, disabling the young warrior would be more important and the girl was more likely to be the victim in this, though one could never be sure when demons were around.

Viral's words calmed the boy down a bit, but why was his chest burning so much? The hairs on his arms felt as if they were suddenly going to burst into flames. No demon had caused such an ill feeling like this before. Then again, no demon he had ever fought before used such fine weapons.

As the young woman began to swim over; Lawfer let his cape fall revealing the armor that shined even in the darkest of nights. The occasional flash of lightning almost seemed to make him glow. The glowing aura would hurt the eyes of those who spent their existance in the shadows, light the immediate area, and make attacks much easier to evade. In a swift movement his hooked spear sliced around into the water without making a single splash.

"You should know my weapon has a foundness for beheading." Lawfer snarled raising the edge of the blade to her chin. "But for you, I'd rather lift your carcass to the sky, and let the heavens take you." He added as a bolt of lightning crashed violently nearby.

Without even knowing it, the boy's instinctual rage had been quelled by her soothing voice. He was finding it more and more difficult to press the facade. His mind soon began doubting if this even was a demon, and Lawfer would be damned to take an innocent person's life.

The girl winced slightly at his armor at the sudden glare of light that eminated from the armor with every flash of lightning, revealing a reddish tinge to her lightly tanned skin and averted her eyes to his hook, which gently rested under her chin. "Hmm...charming boy," she replied as she lifted a single delicate hand out of the water and placed it gently on the weapon, fingering the sides and letting a small droplet of blood fall down her finger. The woman's arm itself was interesting. It appeared to be covered in faded tattoos at first but upon closer inspection, one may notice they appear to include a lattice of reddish veins barely visible in the darkness and even with the light provided naturally and with Lawfer's armor, only ever so noticible. "But I'll guarentee the heavens will have no interest in taking me. And..." she gave a soft chuckle as she swam a little ways back from the polearm. "If you lifted me with this, you risk your own life. Lightning doesn't always choose who to strike."

Her eyes closed as she let out a soft sigh. "Are you done ransacking my things old man? I'm sure you'll find other creatures in these woods that will be worth more than I am. And if you allow me to dress, I may show you the jackpot of demons. Heck, if you wish to kill a few notable bandits, I have a few tidbits of that too."

Viral only wrinkled his nose as he continued to sift through her clothing, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. Other than the shirt seemed a bit burned...and was of higher quality than he would have expected. Then again, she had with her some high quality weaponry. "I am looking for a certain kind of demon."

The girl sighed and said, "Yes yes, everyone is. But I figured you could make a bit of extra money along the side by dispatching a few others..." She opened her eyes suddenly and said very softly, "You know, these woods are very dangerous. If you don't watch your back, someone else will, before they plunge a dagger into it."

"No, lightning doesn't choose, but fortune smiles on the righteous." Lawfer replied lifting his spear from the water still aimed at the strange woman. His eyes focused on the faded tattoos just barely visible as she moved from the light. "Those markings, where have I seen them before?" He quietly asked himself feeling a sense of dread rise into his gut.

He glanced over his shoulders as the woman mentioned daggers.

The girl let out a quiet laugh, which made Viral glance over before continuing to look through her things, and shook her head. "No, I'm not good enough to send those daggers into your back. But believe me, I've seen creatures...monsters who could."

Viral snorted and said, "Demons are crafty like that. You're too young to know the full extent of what demons can do. All the demons left over are second-rate minions who scramble at the first opportunity for battle."

The girl turned to face him, an eyebrow raised defiantly before she once again resumed her passive appearance. Why won't they just leave a bathing women in peace? she thought to herself, trying to hide the annoyance from her appearance. "You don't know the demons of this forest like I do," she replied simply.

It was Viral's turn to snort, however he just shook his head and said, "Lawfer, take her weapons. When we find what we're looking for, we will give them back, young lady. But until then, for our safety, you will carry no weapons with you."

The woman smiled and said, "Fair enough. Just don't dirty them, it's taken me a while to clean them." She looked to Viral and said, "So, either you turn away so I may change...or you may be sick fiends and watch. In reality, I do not care, it'll just change how I think of you two."

Viral backed away from her clothing and stood next to Lawfer, crossing his arms. "I shall not avert my eyes, my lady. I'm afraid you'll have to suffer through us watching." Through the side of his mouth, he whispered to the boy, "Don't let possible demon suspects fool you into letting them go. As much as I hate to admit it, sometimes we have to get a bit dirty to root out the weeds."

The girl rolled her eyes and swam to the edge of the water. "So tell me how this demon appeared," she asked as she reached out of the water and pulled a towel next to the shore.

Nalia continued walking download the stairwell.

“Who's Peetie?

"Peetie's one of the rats that live here," Nalia said. "A friendlier one than the rest. He's never bitten anyone, and he's a bit pudgy from the food that we give him. He's sort of our group's pet."

"And who was the man that was up there? He was so quiet and still. I don't think I've seen anyone who grew up on the streets that still almost as if he knew everything that was around him and wasn't worried at all, even about the guards.”

"Oh, him? He serves mostly as a lookout, in case any trouble comes our way. The roof's a good place for doing that. And if he does see any danger coming, I would send the word out to have everyone get off the streets." She chuckled. "And yeah, he's the quiet type. Been that way for as long as I've known him. I guess that makes him the perfect person for such a lonely job.

She glanced down at her shoulder when she felt Buzz landing on it.

“Also I'm more comfortable when I'm larger is there anyway we can find some clothes that would fit someone around 8 inches tall? I'll give them back as soon as it's safe to fly back to the Tree House.”

"You can change sizes??? Wow...um, well, I don't think we've anything that small. The only one here who's anywhere near that size is Peetie, and he doesn't wear any clothes. But there are some bags and scrap cloths lying around. I'm sure we can make something out of those."

“I don't know your name, What should I call you?”

Nalia slapped a palm to her forehead. "Oh! I'm sorry, how rude of me. That totally slipped my mind. I'm Nalia. I know a few of the people at the Tree House. That's how I knew who you were. There aren't very many people around these parts quite like you, after all."

She got off the stairs and turned down a hallway. A few closed doors lined the walls before the hall bent around the corner. A dirty and unshaven man sat in that corner on some equally dirty blankets that served as his makeshift bed, head drooping down. He smelled of cheap beer.

"Hello Callowe," said Nalia.

The man lifted his head and mumbled back a greeting.

"That's Callowe," Nalia said to Buzz after walking past the man. "He's a nice guy and a great story teller when he's more awake."

Up ahead, the few doors in this section of the building were boarded shut, and the hallway itself looked more damaged and abandoned than the previous sections were.

"Oh, and you were wondering about that demon, that got into the city right? I didn't really hear all that much about it, only that it attacked some people and ran around the city after someone before flying away. I think all of the increased guard activity probably has to do with that. Hmm, that does bring up a question. Since you can fly too, couldn't you fly right over the guards' heads to get away from them?"

***

Xanath had noticed another heat signature moving quickly along the rooftops, and although it was heading in his general direction, it had kept its distance. But then the heat signature disappeared, and that concerned him. He twisted his head to the side a little ways to get a better scan in the direction of where the heat was at just a moment ago, though his heavy hood barely moved so that in the darkness it would appear that he was still facing forward.

Still he could not find anything, and wondered whether he was starting to see things, or if all the activity from earlier that evening had yet to end.

Lawfer returned with the weapons in an open sack. He paused for a moment at the mouth of the pond before emptying the weapons into a slop of mud. He piled them back into the sack, dirt and all, closed it and shook it rapidly. He was about to say something when he darted his attention away from the mysterious woman.

"I understand, but can't you just watch her?" He asked sheepishly trying not to blush. Lawfer faced the other direction peering straight into the woods.
