I think it's kinda hard to come up with something gameplay related, which everyone would find funny. You often need a bit of familiarity with either the region or situation in question to see what's amusing about it. Here goes though.

I liked the time the Pacific submitted an application to join ADN. It was just after Mammothistan became delegate. From what I remember he mostly did it on a whim, expecting a quick rejection. ADN didn't feel like playing along though, so started the application process, thinking that Mammothistan would quickly admit that his application wasn't serious. Having gotten caught up in a situation noone had actually thought through, neither side were willing to back down and lose face though. So we spent a month or so, posting cordial/snide replies back and forth, acting towards the rest of NS as if we all might actually be interested in seeing the Pacific become a part of ADN. What was really amusing though was the fact that the ADN leadership got to explain to the rest of ADN why having the NPO join ADN wouldn't be a total disaster, while the NPO senate found themselves having to pacify a bunch of irate district governors and Pacific citizens, who were pissed that Mammothistan had submitted the application without consulting them. :P

At that point in time the NPO and ADN really disliked and distrusted eachother, but neither side were willing to back down, even though the application process was leading everyone closer to an outcome noone actually wanted. It never did come to the NPO actually joining, but I think we reached the point of ADN getting the application vote going before someone decided to call it quits.

Mammothistan was involved in many, many things. Just not always as "mammothistan" :geek:

Coming as it does from Legatus, I somehow find it hard to care about your comment. I've seldom met a NS personage more silly then the esteemed Meritocratic diplomat. ;) Btw I'd totally forgotten about you and Democratic Donkeys mock rivalry until I read some of the old threads. Good times. :P

Hi, I was wondering if someone could describe the passing of Francos Spain's nation.

I heard when Francos CTEd there was some kind of tribute to him, but I've never been sure exactly what happened?

I have in my head for some reason that when he CTEd some nations moved in at the udpate (was it TRR or TP?) to give a kind of NS 21 gun salute. I don't remember where I picked that up but I was wondering if that really happened, or what did happen if anything. If someone was actually around at the time that would like to share that would be nice :)

Also, have there been any other noticeable salutes in the past when a famous nation passed into the netherworld? Did they ever come back?

Francos Spain went idle right when the NPO was in its campaign of taking over TNP. He had handed over the delegacy of The Pacific to his successor there and had moved into The North Pacific. When the liberation of TNP happened, the idle Francos Spain was kicked into The Rejected Realms, where it Ceased To Exist some time later. The new regime in The Pacific asked the moderators to place Francos Spain back in The Pacific for it to CTE there, telling them the player behind the nation had died in RL (which was later proven to be a fabrication just to garner sympathy for the regime of a player who had merely chosen to stop playing the game). The moderators denied this request, end so the nation Francos Spain indeed CTE'd in TRR.

I wasn't around for that, but I was going to say when LWU applied to join the FRA. Similar situation, but the FRA didn't let it play out for that long.

For those who like to read the primary sources, here's a thread from The Pacific's forums on joining the ADN. The LWU/FRA thread is here, but it's archived and not at all visible to the public. I'd be happy to post more of the application, but I'm not sure whether the archives are one of the okay-to-quote areas on the FRA boards. And if I stop posting to ask someone, I might not be back for a month. :P

Some previously-quoted things from the application:

Blue Wolf wrote:3. Is your region willing to use its own member UN nations in the defence of other FRA regions when they come under attack from the organisations which fall under the 'raider' category?

As long as we’re not defending the region against ourselves…that would be awkward.

Blue Wolf wrote:6. Has your region ever participated in an invasion of another region?

Yes, yesterday.

Really no need to gravedig back 8 pages to answer a question that was already answered, especially when your answer is wrong.

The first mods were Melkor Unchained, Demoness (or was it Feoras), and one other whose name evades me. Yavin might have been in that first group. Myrth came much later.

When did the SC split from the WA, and before that was the whole thing called general assembly, or was it just the WA. And was that during the WA or UN period?

April 1st, 2008: UN becomes WA
May 27, 2009: Commend and Condemn resolutions introduced
July 27, 2009: Liberation resolutions introduced
February 26, 2010: Security Council created

EDIT: One could argue that the UN became the WA on March 31, 2008, but nobody believed it at the time.
Also, one can learn a LOT of NS history just by reading through the news archive, incidentally.

What is now "The General Assembly" was The World Assembly.

Since there was just one council, there was no need for the split-frame. So when you clicked on "WORLD ASSEMBLY", it brought you to a page that looked like this.

Then the game creators decided to add the resolution categories: Commendation and Condemnation; it was clear that these categories made no sense with what usually the World Assembly did. All these categories did was really encroach the WA Author community with gameplay and there was a lot of messy threads. So the solution at the time was to draft these resolutions in two different subforums, one for "The General Assembly" and one for "The Security Council" and the resolutions were hosted in their own Resolution History galleries.

But note, we were still sharing the queue. So if three SC resolutions made it in the queue, the folks in the GA wouldn't see a resolution come to vote for the General Assembly for at least 12 days. This pissed people off. So we suggested to split the queues; the suggested split was called the "Unibot Model" by [violet] and other participants in the design thread. Which of course, warms the cockles of my ego.

That's the model that we have today, it was implemented by [violet] almost two years ago.

Many mostly internal changes to decrease server load, to prevent it
from killing us all under the weight of exponential playerbase growth:
- No more e-mailed daily nation updates! :(
- Endorsements are now "verified" rather than dynamic. Previously,
the game had to verify your endorsements every time someone checked
the UN page, to make sure they were all still there. Now they are
checked by the UN twice per day, and that's how many votes you have
for the next 12 hours.
- The "< 1 2 3 ..." thingy doesn't list page numbers for all four
hundred pages any more
