An Inconvenient Accident (Closed)

Postby New Freedomstan » Sun Dec 04, 2011 11:23 pm

Regional Soviet #15, Border to Ishgar
"Is it a plane?" operator 237-489 472-102 said "It seems to be going to slow to be a plane. Perhaps an Ishgarian attack helicopter?"
"No, lad." 474-855 378-483 "That ain't no helicopter, and certainly not Ishgarian."
The two PCC operators sat huddled over the radio station, the fell North Nefreedian winter having arrived and their listening post not being entirely made for the northern weather. The operators had frequently cursed the construction team, who obviously had to be some southerners from the Redlands who wouldn't be too worried about the extreme cold endured in the far north.

"It seems to... organic and human?" 472-102 said, wearing three layers of blanket over the PCC uniform "Should we alert the AA batteries?"
"No, no, no!" 378-483 replied "Are you insane, lad? If we waste bullets, the Overseer will have us sent to #20! Unless you want to develop cancer, we just send a report and leave it to heads wiser than ours, lad."

______________

"From these reports, we seem to be dealing with a subhuman infiltrator." Commissar-Overseer 376-384 777-281 said "However, it has already passed the border defences, so it is too late to gun it down at the border. Inform our batteries in #14, it seems to be headed there. Shoot on sight."
"What about the commissars manning the LP? Should they be..." one of the aides began to ask
"No, they did everything by the book. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? The humanoid features are just something messed with the radio. Remember what happened during the Maltropian nuclear crisis? It's probably just a big bird."

______________

Regional Soviet #14
Research Station #2 was located in the western parts of Regional Soviet #14, the most staunchly xenophobic region in all of New Freedomstan. The recently elected Regional Foreman, Ida Johansen, was also the Commissar-SectionalOverseer of the Subhuman Containment Section. While some would call this a conflict of interest, those "some" would soon find themselves kindly reminded that such talk is really dangerous to ones health. After the rise of the Humanity First Party in the Region, the top-secret Research Stations was now further bolstered by local militias in addition to the Commissariat troops.

Like most of North-Western Nefreedia, Regional Soviet #14 was very cold and very mountainous. Little existed in the way of agriculture, and the industrial metropolises dotted both sky and terrain with pollution. A sign of progress, to many from West-Nefreedia both from the South-West and North-West. However, what gave the South-West the name "Redlands", the massive iron deposits, did not exist in the North-West. While mountains dominated, what gave the relatively sparsely populated area some form of economy beyond the massive industrial People's Collective was the sprawling forests. While the forests were reciding from the cities themselves, wildlife and forests generally not reacting well to liberal applications of anti-pollution laws, most of Regional Soviet #14 was devoid of civilization.

Peaks towered over the windswept terrain, and the heavy snow that had lasted for weeks had finally subsided. The bears had long since gone to slumber, and rabbits, wolves and foxes were the prime actors in the forests (apart from the occasional hunter intent on getting some meat for once). The land snow-swept had one remarkable dot apart from the local timber-town (population: 5000). While normally nearly impossible to see, Research Station #2 was now clearly visible in the snow. The nearby timber-town provided the excuse for the regular trains to the Research Station, and the townsfolk generally knew to keep well away from the Station. While on paper the area barely had five thousand inhabitants, rumours abounded of a vast underground complex beneath the Station. However, it was the very extensive Anti-Air batteries that would prove most important about the Station itself.

__________

"The hostile subhuman is nearing our batteries," Militiaman Anders Jernmaske said "We have orders to shoot on sight from national command, and from Johansen herself." there was no question which Johansen he meant.
"Well, then you don't need my confirmation. Fire at will!" The Commissar-Overseer shouted into the intercom to the AA batteries surrounding the station. After a few seconds of firing, they stopped.
"It's falling, sir." Jernmaske said "I think it's dead."
"No use picking the corpse up."

_________

289 metres away from the timbertown, some newly fallen snow provided just enough of a dampener for a certain wayward head of state to survive. Having listened into the exchange over the radio, a man in his fifties watched as the giant fell. Waiting for a few second, the man with the greying beard and the weary green eyes cautiously asked:
"Snakkeru Nefridisk? Sprechen sie Deutsch? Do you speak English?"

The snow was stained with blood as the man lie on the ground. His snow white hair was flecked with ice and his flight goggles lie broken and smashed upon the ground from the impact of the rough landing. His bright aquamarine eyes were staring up at the cloudless sky. He was in a heap as he was in pain. He looked both tall and frail shuddering from the burning pain of his wounds while the most remarkable thing about him was not his height. It was his long white wings which at the present the were stained by his own blood which dripped down as he tried to move. This wasn't the first time he had been shot, and of the several times he had been shot this most certainly wasn't the closest he had come to death, but it never gets any less painful. He put his hand upon his collarbone feeling where he had been hit.

It's broken...well at least it missed my heart. I'm glad my wings didn't take too much punishment or the fall itself would have killed me. he thought as he could finally make through his hazy sight from the loss of blood. He saw a man with a greying beard and weary eyes who asked carefully, "Snakkeru Nefridisk? Sprechen sie Deutsch? Do you speak English?"

"I...do speak English honored sir, if you would please f-forgive me for my rudeness." He said as he weakly his his fist over his heart and lowered his head in a bow. "J-joy and salutations, comrade and well met. I don't suppose you could find it in your heart... to help me up. I cannot move. I think I've broken a few bones and I can't move too far."

MY TRANSMITTER! By the Just God ... I should probably where am I? I could have sworn... he thought as he looked around him trying to get his bearings.

"Here, let me help you up comrade-beastling," the man said with some accent, although it was barely noticable. He rushed down to help Maven on his feat. Remarkably, he managed to do so with only some struggling, grunting and what was quite evidently cursing in the man's native tongue.
"By Marx' beard, aren't you cold?" he said when he had got Maven on his feet "We need to cauterise and tend that wound. Lucky for you, the commissars think you are dead so won't send in a kill-team to finish you off. Unluckily for you, I'm not that kind of doctor and the doctors around here won't exactly be too happy to help you. We need to get you out of this cold. If you are trustful enough, my cabin would do. It's outside of the town, and far enough away from the Station for them not to notice. I hope, you can never be entirely sure of what the commissars see. Where are you from, comrade-beastling? You seem to be far away from home."

"I am from the Beastling States of Crystal Spires...My beloved home. I was trying to find my way to the United States of Peace but my transmitter faced interference. You... would open your home to me? You are very kind." Maven said with a shiver "I don't suppose they thought they would need to send a kill team. After all that was a big fall there's snow and I could have already been wiped out from hypothermia. I'm also losing a lot of blood so why would they need it? I just don't know the true extent of my injuries..." he held his hand out and it began to heat up as a small flame seemed to manifest upon it. Maven took the flame and pressed it upon the bleeding gunshot wound he saw trying to muffle a shout of pain.

They would actually send a kill-team? Why was I even shot? Where exactly am I? Maven thought as he tried to walk carefully following the old man. It is one thing to shoot an unfamiliar aircraft or even flag me down for having been lost, but to open fire upon an unarmed man? I, this...

"Aggghh...honorable sir, pardon my rudeness, I forgot to introduce myself. I am...Maven, Maven Auryn." Maven said with deep hesitation.

Perhaps it would be unwise to announce I am the High Chancellor. Maven thought as he grit his teeth feeling that perhaps there was more to that single bullet.

"I need my transmitter, it's important. I need to call for help... Let someone know, anyone." Maven said as he felt mild panic set in.

"Maven Auryn... now where have I heard that name..." the old man said and furrowed his brow, but then stopped "Oh well, it's probably just one of those names. Transmitter, ja? How does it look like? We must hurry, as if it is too heavy it may be buried in the softsnow." after looked at Maven's wounds, he added "And you may yet join the Allfather in Valhalla, comrade, if we do not hurry."

"It looks like a bulky watch with a small monitor on it. It's...I can see it from here. It's over there. I must get it." Maven said as he reached for it and began to punch his passcode and opened up the interface. "Lead me good sir, lest I do end up more of a burden then I should be." Maven said as he punched the communication clearance codes.

This is Maven, I am calling to your position because my transmitter has been tampered with and only you and the Pecians are in the closest position to where I am. My position is somewhere in Paradoxia where I have been attacked by an unknown hostile force. I have sustained multiple gunshot wounds and request immediate assistance. I am with a friendly local, and am uncertain if the attackers are from the United States of Peace and if this was merely a clever assassination attempt so I called you because you're the person closest to my position that I can trust. I'm sending my coordinates now but be advised, my transmitter has been tampered with, and you cannot rely completely on the data I have sent. Please respond.

"Thank you kind sir, I am rather confused as to my location. Where am I?" Maven asked weakly with a childlike innocent smile.

"You don't need help to walk after such a fall?" the old man said with a somewhat puzzled look, then proceeded to slowly walk towards what one could just make out as a cabin. It was located far away from both the town and what in the distance looked like a fort with AA emplacements, and some huddled apparitions moving about on top watch-towers.
"Some of you beastlings are tougher than the glaciers. Comrade-Beastling, you're in Region #14. Within the Socialist Worker's Republic of New Freedomstan, or Nefreedia for short. Or Zeelania if you are old-fashioned."

Maven Auryn recalled the words spoken in the treaty of Caltris.

Regional Soviet #14 have closed it's borders to non-citizens. There is no way anyone can get into Regional Soviet #14 without the PCC finding out.

We cannot simply disregard the popular will of the people, which expressively forbids any foreigner to thread on the soil of Regional Soviet #14 without being accompanied by PCC officials or a member of the Regional Soviet of Region #14...

Inspectors would have to contend with the full might of the People's Civilian Commissariat in making their way to the research stations. And we do not take responsibility for any deaths that may occur, as you have been warned....

Such are our laws.

"By Fornt's beard..." he barely uttered with a look that showed not horror, but more denial and disbelief. "I ah... if it is not rude of me to ask, are you perhaps a PCC official, or a... I admit I know little about the area friend, as do many foreigners as one might expect given that this place is forbidden for foreigners to enter. No news goes out from it. I confess I find myself heartened greatly by your kindness." he said as he had the feeling there was more to what this gentleman was saying. Maven however trusts easily and is often warmed easily by acts of kindness and ploys of compassion. He also smiled muffling a chuckle at the comment of him being stronger than a glacier. It is true, as Maven has been known to have ripped a huge wooden door of the High Council off its hinges in a fit of desperation, but that would be another story to tell that he felt was not what he should be focusing on. Instead he spoke to the man directly.

"It is true that beastlings have incredible fortitude and above average strength, but there are of course things we trade off in both health and dexterity. In my case I am a rare being, an endangered species that is known as a 'storkii' which is a beastling that humans believe to be half human and stork by history, I am very light, and my metabolism is incredibly fast and because of that I face health consequences as my blood sugar drops quickly. This is easily remedied however with glucose and sweets. Otherwise I don't suppose there's much to a man like me. I'm rather simple." This statement couldn't be further from the truth, but Maven believed it was so. He pondered his circumstances having a sinking moment as he imagined the immense trouble he would be in. Perhaps the NFreedians were reasonable, and they would just allow him to return his way to the United States of Peace after a deep apology, that of course however would mean he'd have to allow himself to be found by rather cross PCC officials.

This could prove to be a big international mess. I hope the Dominion received the coordinates. I am hoping I don't end up being mobbed. Maven thought as he imagined the claims of speciesism in New Freedomstan. But surely they cannot all be true, as Comrade #1 was a generally reasonable man, as long as he and I wouldn't discuss about liberal values such as believe in civil and personal freedoms. I suppose there will always be those who are not speciesist and this could perhaps open the door to diplomatic relations. Maven thought as he half smiled with optimism filling his mind.

"Not anymore," the old man said as they approached the cabin "I was for around twenty years. Still got the uniform, one thing they allowed me after I... resigned. Neither am I a member of the Regional Soviet. And I know quite a bit about beastlings in general, although admittedly not of storkii. Worked in the Research Section before being transferred to the Subhuman Containment Section when it was created. Didn't like it much, but one have to do what one have to do."

He opened the door to the cabin. While outside the cabin had looked quite old-fashioned, being woodwork, inside there were far more modern conveniences. An electrical heating unit durred in the background, while the old man got out of his coat (where you could also see a small radio piece). He was quite obviously in his late fifties, a grey beard running down to his chest. A furrowed brow spoke of a lifetime of questions and searching. The cabin was divided into four rooms, one living room, two bedrooms and a kitchen. In the living room was a television, a stationary computer, a couch, two chairs and a table. The paintwork, however, was faded and the wood was clearly visible. The cabin had little in the way of decorations, only a single picture of Comrade #1, the old man and a few others taking a photo inside what looked like a lab. The old man looked younger on the picture, with a shorter beard and less wrinkles.

"Now then, get down on the couch." the old man said as he laid some kind of wrapping on it "As I said, I'm not that kind of doctor but I'll see what I can do. The only anasthetic I have is some vodka, if you would like it."

"'Tis all well, I can bear with the pain. I'm afraid I'm a terrible lightweight, and I'd rather not be spilling all sorts of ghastly or embarrassing secrets or worse babbling about the written works of Tolstoy sang to the tune of the ballad of Erenor. Egad there was that time in Terradin when I had just a tiny bit of Dwarven ale and it did not end well, and there are certain things that happened that night that I don't even remember, and I suppose it's best if I don't know" Maven said with a strained smile as he lie on the couch and removed his pauldron which had bullet dents marks on it.

"I can't see the full extent of the damage, but I am hoping for the best." He said with a quaver as he noticed the picture and was bewildered by it for a moment. At the very least, Maven was sure at this point that the man was not hostile. "Also, what exactly goes on in the research stations? I've heard horrible things, but of course I've also heard silly rumor mills and crazy things spewed by the press all the time. They love secrets and those types of things. 'Tis a matter of building the intrigue to get a payoff from what are usually rather mundane things. I do not know however anything that goes on in the majority of your nation. 'Tis all some sort of secret, as if your people were all those old legends of the mystics in the wood. Nonsense, Your people are comrades under the banner of equality are you not? For the abolishment of the oppressive class system instilled by greedy capitalists. Ending the tyranny of those who exploit the workers? If so then the NFreedians will ever be comrades to the Beastling States, no matter how strangely elusive your nation's conduct has been, but I would like to know the truth, I confess."

"The people of Zeelania have been socialists since the First Revolution," the old man said, while inspecting the wounds located on Maven's wings "I'll need to use alcohol to cleanse the wound. I'm honestly not sure if your kind gets intoxiated from something like that." he went to a first aid kit located in the house, and got some tools "Luckily for you, only a few bullet seems to have hit and they went completely through. The AA batteries are designed for taking down aircraft and helicopters, after all. They don't seem to have actually used AA or HE bullets however. If they did, there'd probably be little left of your wing by now. Hopefully, just cleansing and sealing the wounds will stop the bleeding and you won't develop gangrene." the old man set to work, removing some bullet fragments after cleansing the wounds with alcohol and cleaning with antibacterial soap. He then grabbed some bandages and sealed the wounds.

"You might need stitches for that," the old man said with a furrow "But I'm not certain. I've stopped the bleeding at least, and there doesn't seem to be much of an infection. I may know a guy who may be willing to help. Although, he voted HFP so it would be difficult to get him to keep his mouth shut. I'd rather not risk it. As for the Stations, well... It depends on when and which you mean. I worked over in Station #3, then got transferred here a month ago. I... resigned over disagreements with certain procedural changes in the last few months. I don't know much about what foreigners know of Nefreedia, and most younglings know little of how the rest of the world is like. I haven't been outside the country in twenty years. Are you hungry?"

"I'm rather famished actually. I haven't rested easily for a while, flying this far takes time... but resigning over disagreements 'eh? I know the feeling. In my younger days before I was employed as a Prosecutorial Mediator by the High Council, I worked as a Scribe in an old templar's office and I absolutely hated it. The man was a complete Zealot, and he was so obsessed about rigid codes of Spirean politeness to the point where I am pretty sure I've picked up all the ticks on it. Though I cannot say that it didn't serve me well at all. I did become a Prosecutor, but I suppose after I resigned from that position I found that suited me better. Though, judging by your expression I can see that this is not merely about an obnoxious coworker." Maven said with a slight sigh as he wondered what types of food there would be here in New Freedomstan.

"I hope you have no objections over meat," the old man said "I have some pre-prepared lappskaus, bread and some grinded deer-meat. I guess you can pick out the beef from the lappskaus. But it tastes much better with beef and deer." he said, as he set to preparing the food. The lappskaus can he just pured into a pot over the stove, while putting some of the grinded deer into another pot.

"I must admit I know very little of the Crystal Spires," the old main said while occasionally stirring in the pots "Apart from some of the propaganda that has started appearing after Peace joined some kind of subhuman alliance. Not much specifically about the Spires though, apart from the Spires being filled with." the man stopped for a second, then seemed to try to imitate another voice "Filled with deranged subhumans who think themselves socialists while opposing the Revolution and the suppression of fascism and nazism both internally and internationally. Individualistic beasts who roam the lands, while the human proletariat desperately struggles for freedom." he stopped imitating the voice "Of course, I don't take much stock in our reporting of foreign news. Too biased for my taste, and I should know. Dealt quite a bit with some Commissars from the Education Section over the years. One of my partners even worked in that Section. They do tend to take a certain point of view on matters. But templars? Is your country religious?"

"Aye, religious we are. In Mystrian Forntianism there is the belief is that the Gods gave of us their essence. The Just God lives through the justice we deliver to ourselves and others, and the responsibility is on us as believers to preserve the existence of Gods in the world and seek apotheosis with all aspects of the divine through empowerment. But our religion is strange in that its application is rather secular, for example I believe strongly in the Just God, but the Just God isn't conceived as an external being but rather the objective concept of universal justice embodied. This means that there's also overarching principles that support one another along with the other Gods and Goddesses in Mystria. As for the question you had about templars, a templar is of The Holy Order of Idealists or are Knights of Fornt. They are soldiers, scouts, and rangers dedicated to protecting the Faith. Their duties extend to learning the manners of Apotheosis and self perfection, healing the sick, ministering and teaching the ignorant, and punishing the wrongdoers who violate the Law and the virtues of Justice and fairness. It is known that the Knights are responsible to uphold the Law and thus if a government is deemed Illegitimate and disordered it is the duty of the Knights of the Order to take the government down by force. This makes the knights at odds with governments of all nations, but keeping the Knights of the Order is a sign of a good Government and the Order of Idealists are deeply revered for their selfless service as they do work in harmony with the Guardsmen and protect the citizens and they serve the citizen with intense devotion. They do charitable works as part of their duties and uphold the Forntian Code which was said to have been laid down by the Just God in the founding of life. The code which was said to have been a small subsection, then expanded to include an ever-changing governmental system of religious belief.

"We the people of the Just God for the promotion of good and the common welfare thereby affirm Rights to all Reasoned Beings to foster the spread of loving-kindness, compassion, and above all else fairness.

Reasoned Beings are endowed with reason and conscience, should act kindly towards one another in a spirit of goodness, and promote the furtherance of goodness and happiness for all sentient beings.

A True believer will not use harmful words and actions based on ignorance, hatred, or greed. The True believer sees greedy, hateful, and ignorant acts as a scourge leading to chaos which shall return all reasoned beings to the hell of the Abyss.

Do not falter in the face of injustice, stand tall with courage and integrity. Speak with Knowledge and Seek the Law in times of strife and comfort. Aid the weak and the needy, Raise the Humble and downtrodden, Exalt the Humble and Humble the Exalted. For only in balance can one be true.

Blessed be those who govern and serve the good and welfare of the all,
Cursed be those who govern and serve only themselves.

The Lord deems them Corrupted and with the Rod of Judgement Smite their Greed, Stupidity, and Hate.

Such is the Code, but naturally there's also the concept of apotheosis and that's a completely different story. Spirean religion is a complicated affair, but it does tend to color everything in our society. Strange as that may be, the religion encourages revolutionary thought in their charges and a Forntian is expected to maintain a classless society as it is fair and ordered a core concept. Though revolutions occur when fascists try to incur upon our people, but their overthrow would have never happened if it had not been for the brothers in the cloisters of the Forntian temples. It was the belief that communism is true social justice that lead to the uprising against the Archon's agents when they incurred upon our society. The idea that most people have of Spireans is that we're limp wristed Liberals, but the truth is that Spireans are completely ruthless against fascists because the idea is religiously unthinkable and counter to core beliefs and so the fascist ideological elements usually come from atheists of all things. How strange it is. Foreign religions seem to express some sort of imperialistic belief of some sort of holy dominion by external entities, rather than being a part of a divine whole which is supposed to work together and not against itself which is just strange. Atheists believe that they are to serve no one but themselves which leads to greed. We view these concepts as worthy of ridicule, or ignoring. Theology is a fickle thing." Maven said with a raised eyebrow and shrugged. "Moreover there's just to much justice to deliver to worry about trivial things. The Charge is to get out there and end greed, ignorance, and hate, and it works."

The old man had finished preparing the food, and set out a rather large plate to Maven. Two loaves of bread, some butter, lappskaus (beef stew with potatoes and various vegetables) and some grinded deer-meat, heated and seasoned. The old man had prepared a smaller plate for himself as well.
"Eat and be healthy," he said "Sounds more like an organised mass philosophy than a religion. New Freedomstan has mostly done away with religion, although the Church still has some strength in some areas and a few people are still christian in most areas. The Asatru faith also had a resurgence a century before the First Revolution, and still have quite a few practioners in the north. I'm among them, although it is more about a certain view of things and respect of nature for what it is than worship of the Gods themselves. About four fifths of Nefreedians are irreligious though."

"It works and 'tis fitting for such a nation as diverse as the Spireans." Maven said as he ate with an overtly dignified manner. Ticks indeed. Regardless of the pain he endured at the moment, he had the constant proud, strong, polish and composed poise of a gentleman. He finished his meal and carefully set the silverware in the order they were presented as and looked at the gentleman who was helping him. "Honored Comrade, your kindness is truly beyond all one could expect and more. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It seems at the moment I will be unable to fly for obvious reasons, but I do not wish to risk getting you into trouble. What is the penalty for a person keeping a foreigner sheltered here without permission, and what is the penalty I would face? I know that it is very possible that the People's Civilian Commissariat may very well end my life if they deem me hostile as they'd be entitled to. But I'm afraid this is all a big misunderstanding. My transmitter has been tampered with, and it usually instructs me on the proper flight paths to take to the locations I need to reach. To attempt to get to the United States of Peace and then finding myself here is very concerning. Imagine all the airplane flight paths I could have crossed. I'm a lucky man that I made it here at all."

Maven allowed his gaze to rest at the window as his thoughts went to the research facilities and his curiosity increased. "So your scientists have never seen or learned anything about Storkii then? I can imagine it would be difficult considering there's hardly any of us left. I imagine there's all sorts of research being conducted. We in Crystal Spires have been doing a lot of Xenobiology as well. Also I don't believe I caught your name?"

"Think nothing of it, comrade." the old man said, having finished his meal with much less dignity than Maven had. "My name is 772-348 472-474. Names aren't that important here. The penalty for keeping a foreigner? Considering my age, I would receive summary execution rather than hard labour camp. Any foreigner in #14 is automatically considered a spy, so keeping a foreigner receives the punishment of High Treason. It depends quite a bit on which Overseer is assigned, however, as accidentally flying over the area and getting shot by the PCC is a bit of a special case. You being non-human though... You'd be sent straight to Station #3. Since you would have commited a crime, there would be no questions of consent upon being sent there. If you had been captued in Region #1 or Region #9, you would have been able to chose to be extradited to your own country upon paying a fine and being interrogated by the SSS, or being sent to Station #3."

The old man took away the plates, and returned to the chair. He continued:
"I don't think we know anything about storkii, no. I've never heard of us having any in Station #3, and I worked there since it was established. The other research stations deals exclusviely with pony research these days, and none of the transfers included any human storks. Quite a few other things, as Station #1 and #2 were emptied to make room for ponies. Station #4 and #5 were also established. Station #3 is really the only one which commits to subhuman research, the others being only interested in ponies." he scratched his beard a bit "Very narrow-minded, if you ask me."

"Ponies are their focus then? I see, but as for the harsh penalties for helping one such as me, that is very concerning my friend. I will try to not stay long as I have already intruded too much and I cannot in good conscience put you in such a grave risk. My duty to the good and common welfare forbids me from putting myself above your safety. You are a citizen and I cannot have that burden put upon me especially if I have committed a crime unintentionally or not." Maven said as he got to his feet in a daze. "Station 3 then? It seems rather ominous and I fear what kind of treatment I would face given that it is a place where suspected spies are kept. My wing is not well enough to fly any semblance of distance, but I will find some shelter. If anyone asks about me, or where I have gone, speak the truth. Do not lie for me, as they will likely spare you for direct cooperation. I am heading in that direction in hopes that I will find some safe area until my wing heals."

Especially because I am a civil servant, and it is my duty to look after your welfare. Serving the Law does not end at arbitrarily defined borders, and you are one of the people, thus I serve you. The Law is everywhere, and although these laws in New Freedomstan don't seem to inspire the freedom and welfare of the common good, they certainly seem to promote equality or so I'm so often told, and this is to be respected. Maven thought as he reached for his transmitter with weakness as he put his pauldron back on and his beret.

"If that means that I walk out into the snow and seek shelter in the woods, then so be it, but I do not wish to burden you with my presence especially if it will lead to your execution. I thoroughly guarantee that I am not a spy however, and perhaps if the PCC would have me speak with Comrade #1, I'm sure he will know too. 772-348 472-474, I thank you for your kindness and compassion. Please take care of yourself." Maven said with a bow as he placed his hand over his heart in sincerity. He limped over to the door and pondered what would possibly face him. He was in deep, deep, trouble and he had unknowingly put another man's life at risk.

"Comrade #1 is dead," 472-474 said, his tone having changed a bit "And so is the Party, having split into various petty-parties. I suggest you get some sleep. You are wounded, and if you head out into the woods in those clothes you'll freeze to death. The PCC won't suspect one of their own." he stopped for a moment "Well, they would, but not immediately. And I know of only two ACS officials in this area, so there are probably only a dozen or so. This cabin is pretty much the only guaranteed unsurveiled building you'll find in this area. And once they send someone to check up on what they shot down, and don't find anything, they'll do sweeps. Until you have regained your strength, I suggest you stay here, but I won't force you. I insist on you bringing a proper coat if you decide to head out. I also suggest you make your way to Region #1 through Region #2. If you get captured in Region #2, try to say that you are a tourist or a diplomat who got on the wrong train and slept through or something like that. If you get captured in #14, there won't be any questions."

He went up, and opened a wardrobe. It was dominated by grey uniforms, a single PCC uniform (although, with the badge and rank insignia stripped off) and a few heavy fur coats. He took one of the coats, and offered it to Maven while saying:
"I suggest you do not head off into the woods. I have some contacts who may be able and willing to smuggle you into Region #2, but if you choose to leave at least take this."

"Comrade 772-348 472-474, it pains me to say this, but I fear you may be correct. I cannot go out in the weather now and expect to live long, nor can I put your life in danger intentionally. This puts me between a rock and a hard place it seems. Perhaps I will have to use cunning should it come to it to save your life. I will stay for the time being, but if they try to enter your home I will threaten you which will make it seem like you were under duress, so you could only comply. This makes deniability for you, but it does put me in a right nasty position it seems. You see at that point they will have no choice but to declare me hostile and then the whole of New Freedomstan will practically work together to kill me. That would be bad, because as powerful as I am, glacier or not I am vulnerable here. I cannot fly in my condition. I need some sort of plan if I am to stay in your company, a plan to protect your life." Maven said as he sat back on the couch with his skin still pale and cool to the touch, and his bright aquamarine colored eyes hazed by the pain.

"Let me get you some painkillers," 472-474 said, and got a small bottle from the first aid kit. He took a pill from it, got a glass of water but before he handed them to Maven he said: "These are designed for humans though. They shouldn't do something lethal, but you may react differently to them unless your metabolism and other bodily functions are very much like humans. We tested it on some dwarves, and they reacted as expected. But I advise you to only take them if the pain becomes too intense."

"Here. And true enough what you say," 472-474 said "Normally the sentence would be summary execution, although I'm on pretty good terms with most of the Overseers. As long as you don't stay here for long and there are any kind of exonerating situation such as they finding you threatening me, or I fake not knowing about how the hell a subhuman got into my cellar, the punishment would most likely be house arrest. And I can live with that, I managed to get transferred to purchaser service on the intranet for the local furniture cooperative. I don't really have to live this cabin, unless I head to the pub... And I don't really fancy going down there anymore.
You don't need to worry much about the PCC coming unexpectadly, though. That radio there," 472-474 pointed to one of the radios on the table "Is directly connected to this area's Commissarial communication. The one in my coat is also, through another system. If there is some kind of general message, we'll hear it."

"Then this should be plain enough that I can do my best to protect you as well. Deniability is what you need for that. I shall rest in your cellar for the time being," Maven said with a quavering voice as he took the medicine. With his speedy metabolism it would act fast and powerfully, but it would also wear off just as quickly. He would not be able to take more than the max dosage so he would wait until a moment like this one where the pain becomes so unbearable that it takes full concentrated effort to keep his composure. He had his dignity to keep intact, being shot was no moment to fall apart especially when a shout would create a racket, and he needed to be invisible. He carefully limped to the cellar where he finally was overcome by the pain and leaned against the wall and slipped into unconsciousness as a small blood covered feather touched the ground lightly.

Research Station #2, Defence & Security Overseer's Office

Commissar-Overseer Trym Trymsen sat by his desk, overviewing infractions and a report on a recent subject riot in Cell Complex #3. Trym was a man in his early forties, having participated as a soldier for the Communists during the Civil War and had served with honour in the New Freedomstani Army until requesting being re-assigned to the Subhuman Containment Secition. He still had the build and mindset of a soldier, which fitted remarkably well in certain Commissariat sections, and dealt with any infraction with impunity. His black hair was barely visible under the razorcut hair, and no facial hair was visible.

The office was smoke-filled, as the man was an avid cigarsmoker with little regard for any asthmatic coworkers or his own pension. His black-and-grey Commissarial uniform was as always clean, although hardly visible was the hints of blood having been washed off. His blue eyes gave no hint of emotion, and his left arm had long since been amputated as the medic corps during the Civil War had been remarkably low on medical supplies and remarkably well-stocked on hacksaws and prosthetics. After leaving military service, he had instead opted for replacing the prosthetic hand with a crude metal claw for the intimidating factor. He loved getting personally involved in various interrogations and was an avid believer in supporting the researchers as much as possible if the test subjects got "uppity" according to his very liberal definiton of uppity.

One of his subordinates knocked on the door, and he looked up from the report. The subordinate went in, saluted and after a brief period of coughing said:
"Comrade-Overseer, we found no body of any humanoid flier. Although we did find what we think is where it landed, although the snow has covered much of it."
"Any tracks?" Trym said, with a coarse voice signalling too many years of too much smoke
"No, Comrade-Overseer. The snow has covered everything."
"I want that thing in a cell within the next forty-eight hours, comrade. I don't care if it is alive or dead, it will head to Station #3. We can't have such a blemish on our report, if it is alive it will not excape. Sweep the town and any outlying areas, and send some kill-teams out into the woods if it has tried to make it's way."
"You would think any of the civilians would betray us to those monsters?"
"Remember the second rule of the PCC. Suspect everyone, always. I don't care if they have some pro-human and anti-everything else rallies regularily, and the HFP's words are taken as Gospel by these civilians... We are do not deal with trust, comrade."
"Understood, Comrade-Overseer." Trym's adjutant said, saluted and left.

__________________________

A couple rather loud knocks on the door to the cabin woke 472-474 up. (OOC explanation below)
"Kamrat syvhundreogsyttito!" a man on the other side of the door shouted "Skyld at vi vekkerø, men det er Overseerns ordre!"
"Skitt." 472-474 muttered, as he got up from his bed. He opened the door to the cellar, and woke Maven up quietly.
"Just be very, very quiet comrade." 472-474 "I know these men. Hopefully I can get some info on what they know."

He then headed up again and opened the door. Audible through down the cellars were what the rather loudmouthed men was saying.
"Halla kamrater." 472-474 said as he opened the door "Harikke hørt at jæ er pensjonert? Kanke bli med på no forsøk nå, vett."
One of the commissars laughed, but the other didn't.
"Næ, ær nok ikke det, vett." the man who had shouted earlier said "Vi må nok inspirere hyttari.
The man laughed again, and said.
"Seff kamrat. Vi skakke holde deg oppe lenge."

Footsteps proceeded inside, and they went around the entire cabin for a while. You could hear them checking under beds.
"Dere burde nok ikke sjekke loftet," 472-474 said "Er et skikklig rot eroppe."
"Kamrat, sjekk loftet." the female voice said, and you could hear there was some kind of suspicion in her voice. There were some footsteps up a ladder, and some more inspection this one further up.
"Ække en dritt her oppe," the male voice said "Trur vi har kasta bort nok ti her nå te rapporten."
The footsteps went to the door again, and 472-474 said:
"Hade a kamrater. Hundre+femtiseks, ska vi ta en øl nerre på pøbben en da?"
"Ja, men trukke vi kommer til å få no særlig fritid neste dagane." the male voice replied
"Å? Ærre no gærnt?" 472-474 said
"Er no flyvande udyr som hadde forvilla seg inn i landet, og vi skøyt ned faenskapet." the male voice said "Vi veit jokke no om det, så vi dro ut for å hente inn liket. Men når vi kommer dit, så er dekke no der. Så nå har Kamrat Trymsen mobilisert hele forbanna UFS te å leite etter udyret."
"Kamrat, vi bøkke fortelle for mye." the female voice said
"Slappa, kamrat. Gamle firehundreogsyttito er jo kommissar, og man pænsjonerer sække orntlig fra Kommissariatet. Men vi må fortsette, kamrat, så vi snakkas."

472-474 waited for a few minutes, then opened the cellar door.
"They didn't find a thing," he said "But the PCC knows that you survived the crash, but nothing about you besides you being a flying humanoid and that you've been shot recently. The Overseer of security have initiated a vast search operation though."

OOC:
"Comrade 772!" a man on the other side of the door shouted "Sorry for waking you, but it's the Overseers orders!"
"Shit." 472-474 muttered, as he got up from his bed.

"Hello, comrades." 472-474 said as he opened the door "Haven't heard I'm pensioned/resigned? Can't do any experiment now, y'know."
One of the commissars laughed, but the other didn't.
"No, isn't that, y'know." the man who had shouted earlier said "We have to inspect your cabin. Is some kind of flying subhuman that have got lost here."
"And you think I have it?" 472-474 said "Isn't nearly twenty years in the Commissariat enough so that you won't wake up an old man to see if he has betrayed People and Fatherland?"
"You know we can't make exceptions, comrade" another voice, this one female, said "It would be corruption, and then we'd have the ACS on our backs."
"Yeah, yeah. But can you make it fast? I'm sleeping of the booze."
The man laughed again, and said.
"Of course, comrade. We won't keep you up for long."

Footsteps proceeded inside, and they went around the entire cabin for a while. You could hear them checking under beds.
"You should probably not check the attic," 472-474 said "It's a real mess up there."
"Comrade, check the attic." the female voice said, and you could hear there was some kind of suspicion in her voice. There were some footsteps up a ladder, and some more inspection this one further up.
"Can't find anything up here," the male voice said "I think we have wasted enough time here for the rapport."
The footsteps went to the door again, and 472-474 said:
"Goodbye, comrades. 156, should we grab a beer down at the pub some day?"
"Yeah, but I don't think we'll have much spare time in the coming days." the male voice replied
"Oh? Is something wrong?" 472-474 said
"There's a flying subhuman that have gotten this far into the country, and we shot it down." the male voice said "We know nothing about it, so we went to retrieve the corpse. But when we get there, there's nothing there. So now Comrade Trymsen have mobilised the whole damn SCS to look for the subhuman."
"Comrade, we shouldn't say any more." the female voice said
"Relax, comrade. Old 472 is a commissar, and you never really retire from the Commissariat. But we have to continue, comrade, so goodbye."

"Then I must be incredibly careful from this point on, my friend. If it is true that they have swept the area, I wonder for how long they will continue to do so before they give up and stop searching for me. If it is something that they will dedicate all their resources and time to, how long would it take judging by terrain, conditions and visibility?" Maven asked with a slight hint of desperation in his voice.

I might not have enough time to find the team from the Dominion of Lubyak, and they can't reasonably reach so deep into Nfreedian territory. I have to find some way out or, without fail, I will be captured or killed and get this poor man killed for his efforts. This cannot be done. I will not allow it.

"I might also need to know a little bit about the Research Station #3 should I be forced to surrender myself or worse, should I be captured. You used to work there, what is the common procedures? Safe areas of passage and exits? Agh, I'm overwhelmingly faced with questions, this is becoming more dangerous by the minute. How long do I have?" Maven said with a nervous expression that he quickly tried to contain within his calm and peaceful facade.
