WINNERS 11th Annual Posters Awards!

Postby AiliailiA » Sat Nov 05, 2011 7:30 pm

Apologies to Neo Kervoskia, but it being more than a week since the nominations closed I think it's best to just get this presentation done. For the sake of tradition, this first post will award the General Debating Awards and the Trophies according to NK's method (as best as I can tell) and I'll go into alternative counts of the results in the second post.

The Grand Prix for General Debating

Conserative Morality

The Bronze Medal for General Debating
Keronians

The Golden Trophy
Minoriteeburg

Congratulations to all this year's winners!

In the awards above, I tried to follow Neo Kervoskia's method from years past, as closely as I could tell it was done. Examining the 9th and 10th Awards, my addition of the nominations did not exactly match the Awards as presented by NK, but possibly some of the nomination posts had been edited after the closing date. It seems NK awards prizes to runners-up, where the first place getter has already won a superior prize. So I did the same in the case of the Bronze Medal where Conserative Morality and Keronians were tied on 5 nominations each. It goes outright to Keronians because CM has a silver medal and if you store silver and bronze together they go rusty.

Now, it seems very unfair to me that some posters got no awards at all, only because the nominations made for them were spread between Gold, Silver and Bronze. The best example of this is Sibirsky, who very nearly won the Grand Prix (with 8 to Bottle's 10), also came second for Silver Medal (with 4 to CM's 9) and had 2.5 votes for Bronze Medal. Alien Space Bats too, seems unlucky not to get some award (with 7 Grand Prix noms and 3 for Silver Medal).

So I will now present some alternative scorings for the first 6 awards (medals and trophies) and invite comment on whether one of these methods should be used in future Posters' Awards.

EDIT: Spoiler'd, on account of how high in the thread it is. People should feel free to congratulate each other, sulk, etc :)

My personal favorite is to count a Gold/GP nomination as 3, a Silver nomination as 2, and a Bronze nomination as 1. This would produce the following results:

Grand Prix
Bottle (10G, 3S, 1B) 37

Silver Medal
Conserative Morality (4G, 9S, 5B) 35

Bronze Medal
Sibirsky (8G, 4S, 2.5B) 34.5 *

Alien Space Bats (7G, 3S) 27
Farnhamia (2G, 1S, 1B) 9
Keronians, The Merchant Republics, Hydesland 8

Golden Trophy
Minoriteeburg (7G, 3S, 4B) 31

Silver Trophy
The Parkus Empire (6G, 4S, 1B) 27

Bronze Trophy
Nanatsu no Tsuki (2G, 4S, 1B) 15

ZombieRothbard (4G) 12
Nightkill the Emperor (3G, 1S) 11
Conserative Morality (2S, 3B), Sibirsky (2G, 1S, 1B); 9

*Nominations reading "x and y" and those reading "x or y" where counted as a half vote for x and a half vote for y. For example.

Next, a slightly different weighting. Golden/Grand Prix nominations are counted as 4 not 3. This makes it less likely that a poster will get the top prize by a winning a lot of silver and bronze.

Grand Prix
Bottle (10G, 3S, 1B) 47

Silver Medal
Sibirsky (8G, 4S, 2.5B) 42.5 *

Bronze Medal
Conserative Morality (4G, 9S, 5B) 39

Alien Space Bats (7G, 3S) 34
Farnhamia (2G, 1S, 1B) 11
Hydesland (2G, 1S) 10

Golden Trophy
Minoriteeburg (7G, 3S, 4B) 38

Silver Trophy
The Parkus Empire (6G, 4S, 1B) 33

Bronze Trophy
Nanatsu no Tsuki (2G, 4S, 1B) 17

ZombieRothbard (4G) 16
Nightkill the Emperor (3G, 1S) 14
Sibirsky (2G, 1S, 1B) 11
Conserative Morality (2S, 3B) 9

Now a quite different weighting, as suggested by Yootwopia. All three kinds of nominations have similar strength: 15 for Golden/Grand Prix, 12 for Silver, and 10 for Bronze.

Grand Prix
Conserative Morality (4G, 9S, 5B) 218

Silver Medal
Bottle (10G, 3S, 1B) 196

Bronze Medal
Sibirsky (8G, 4S, 2.5B*) 193

Alien Space Bats (7G, 3S) 141
Keronians (1G, ,5B) 65
Farnhamia (2G, 1S, 1B) 52
The Merchant Republics (1G, 2S, 1B) 37

Golden Trophy
Minoriteeburg (7G, 3S, 4B) 181

Silver Trophy
The Parkus Empire (6G, 4S, 1B) 148

Bronze Trophy
Nanatsu no Tsuki (2G, 4S, 1B) 88

ZombieRothbard (4G) 60
Nightkill the Emperor (3G, 1S) 57
Conserative Morality (2S, 3B) 54
Sibirsky (2G, 1S, 1B) 52

And finally, here are the results by the four different scoring methods, in table form:

I invite comment on whether we should use one of these other counting methods for the next Annual Posters Awards. Perhaps we should have a poll on it?

And I approve of the weighted 4,2,1 version.

If people think it would be better to spread the awards around I could make these changes:

  1. Farnhamia would keep KYC but lose the Mention. Other candidates for a Mention are Alien Space Bats (4th in medals by any accounting), The Parkus Empire (trophyist by any weighted accounting) and Katganistan (9.5 to NERVUN's 18, despite doing more of her work away from General).
  2. Put in more Honorable Mentions, by popular demand in this thread (people really should see the speadsheet I can see before deciding). Not too many though, it shouldn't be a "thanks for playing" award.
  3. CM would lose the half-share of Best Sig so -StGeorge has it outright.
  4. ... AND/OR ... CM gives up Bronze Trophy to Nanatsu no Tsuki, leaving The Parkus Empire with the Silver Trophy outright (or the other way around, or toss for it).
  5. Dumb Ideologies (8) would lose Outstanding Sarcasm to Norstal (5) but keep Humor which she won by an hilarious margin.
  6. Keronians (5 with one GP) would give up the Bronze Medal to Buffet and Colbert (3 with 1 silver) or Grave_n_Idle (3 with one GP), keeping Best New Poster which Kero won decisively.
  7. The Nuclear Fist (4) could give up Best WTF Moment to You-Gi-Owe (3) and keep the Award for Uncommon Insanity (12) since even the combined insanity of Lunatic Goofballs (4), Nightkill the Emperor (3) and Zeppy (3) does not match it without added insanity from Dumb Ideologies (2), Hammurab (2) or You-Gi-Owe (2).

I would not change any one of those without the agreement of the parties involved.

But I ask you all to give opinions on whether the prizes should be spread around a bit more, so posters don't have to share an award (tho, Nana and Parkus is a match made in heaven ... I can say that because Galloism would run out of fuel before he could fly over and bomb my house with turkeys ...) and no poster has more than one award unless they won them both by large margins.

Give your opinion on it, and I repeat: I won't change anything unless the poster losing an award agrees. Otherwise it stays just like it is in the OP.

Lifetime Achievement:

Dyakovo, Grave_n_Idle, Maurepas, Oterro, The Cat-Tribe 2

CM has a Medal however the medal awards are calculated and a Bronze Trophy in the traditional accounting ... also shares Best Sig. That's enough, or his ego will explode and mess the place up.

Sibirsky deserves something more than just Best Capitalist Pig because he had the most nominations overall even without the 28 for that! In any of the weighted systems of scoring he'd have a medal. I can't NOT give Sibirsky the Lifetime Achievement award which he won outright. Honestly, I think he deserves more.

So along with you coming fifth or sixth in the medals, and a bunch of noms across the categories, and only being one nom away from the Lifetime Achievement award, I thought you should get one of the Honorable Mentions.

Congratulations!

Next year I guess.

Hey wait. Maybe you and Mr Bananagrabber and Four-Sides Triangles could devise an eminently fair scoring system, which rewards certain numbers of votes in unrelated categories (like Insanity and Zooke) with a massive win in the Medals and Trophies. Then we could vote strategically (and at the last moment to adjust for votes from outside the cognoscenti) to divvy up the good stuff between us. You three would do the brain-work, I'd be the front-man, and to avoid any suggestion of corruption my demands would be modest.

A Lifetime Achievement award would satisfy me. Or bronze Trophy. Neither of those would attract suspicion, and you all could have the precious metals.

People who denounce the free market and voluntary exchange, and are for control and coercion, believe they have more intelligence and superior wisdom to the masses. What's more, they believe they've been ordained to forcibly impose that wisdom on the rest of us. Of course, they have what they consider good reasons for doing so, but every tyrant that has ever existed has had what he believed were good reasons for restricting the liberty of others.

The Unjustly Not-Banned Poster Award.
The Mod Most Likely to Start a Flamefest Award.
The Most Dishonest and Cowardly Mediocre Poster Award.

The Creepiest Poster Award.

I suspect Dyakovo for one would be proud to have this award.
The Unjustly Not-Banned Poster Award.

Any number of posters who oppose moderation in general or certain moderators in specific would be pleased with this. I've even seen some "unjustly not deleted" semi-troll posts/signatures offsite.
The Mod Most Likely to Start a Flamefest Award.

Any mod with "unpopular" opinions (e.g. Melkor or Nathicana) would have a good laugh at taking this one home.
The Most Dishonest and Cowardly Mediocre Poster Award.

Partisan hacks would see this as evidence that they're doing something right by pissing off their opponents.

So no. As long as you have an award, people will try to win it.

Vote Steel and Fire for the MDaCMP Award '11!

Ailialia, you did a fantastic job organizing this. The winners deserve the accolades, that much is certain! Especially my boys Sib, Trots, and Keron. I know some famous folks! Hows that for awesomesauce? In fact, I'm off to crack a beer in your honor right now!

'Yak is creepy in a quaint and old-fashioned way. You can see the creepy coming even before he types it.
He'd come third or fourth at best.
Hell, even I could beat him with my ageless genderless politically-correct creep moves.

Hmm, maybe.

The Mod Most Likely to Start a Flamefest Award.

Any mod with "unpopular" opinions (e.g. Melkor or Nathicana) would have a good laugh at taking this one home.

Both good mods imo. Dread Lady Nathicana came in fourth this time, why not throw the dread lady a bone?

Again, I doubt that a mere partisan shill would win this. Dishonesty and Cowardice are more fundamental qualities than mere partisanship!
