Rugby League World Cup IX thread

Welcome one and all to the nation of Saugeais, the site where the 9th Rugby League World Cup will take place. A new record of 40 teams have all entered in the hopes of being crowned champions of Rugby League, a title that Virabia currently holds. The Virabi, of course, have entered into this competition hoping to retain their title and number 1 ranking, but along the way there are many challenges, not just for them, but to all that participate. Could it be Sorthern Northland holding up the trophy at the end? Or maybe Chetkosk? The hosts, Saugeais? Maybe even one of the many newcomers to the World Cup. It will be wild ride over the next couple of weeks, but in the end only one will take the ultimate prize.

The Federation of Polar Islandstates Rugby League Team

Rugby league is by some way the smaller of the two main rugby disciplines played in the Federation - the newly formed national league is still in its infancy really - but the fans are keen, and the players passionate, and following an encouraging showing at the last tournament, they will be looking to make good progress here. Players are predominantly chosen from the strongest states at it in the nation, with the state of Landt Sibir dominating. Though for those who RP a domestic league championship, all of these players are in the shop window should you be interested.

Style Mod: +5
Long drawn out tactical grinds are for Union, players in the Federation that opted for League have done because they love to attack.

(We forgo a bench...((OOC: Extra work)))

Kits: Sice I've been gone, I haven't stoped developing Virabia. Instead I've done alot of development for a project that I may start rather soon-ish, perhaps including it in my rps for this RLWC. Anyways, things have... changed. Though I assure you it's for the better. The quintessential hippie-socialists underwent a bit of a loss in faith in their government, smoked some strong bud and are now well enroute to establishing something being called the Earth Republic, more on that later. Anyways, one of the outcomes of this rather abrupt change in philosophy is that clothes, they've become rather optional, rather more so than before. Long story short, the islands like one big nudist colony, except in winter or when biking (Trust me, biking naked is not as cool as it sounds. It is much less cool). Anyways, to reflect this, the League team will be going, not nude but in tight fitting speedo like things meant to protect those nether regions (can't have those getting injured). The rest of the "uniform" will be body paint in various designs the players come up with in the colours of the Virabi flag.

That's right. We're going TRIBAL.

Don't be too concerned though. We'll still win. We'll just look good while doing so.

The Fuji Chronicle
Host Bias
by Ju-San

I'll keep this punctual because, to be honest, not much time should be wasted on such filth and negligence on the part of the supposedly neutral hosting committee but today, I was browsing the official site of the RLWC, doing general research on the prey that the Yorozuyan team will undoubtedly beat in only a short time and it include a short passage about teams with chances of winning. Of course the pinko-Virabis in all their prissy ass faggotry were at the top of the list and below them the Sortherners, who are TOO FUCKING WASTED to spell the word SOUTH RIGHT. I mean, do they have schools in that country and if so, what must they teach. How to make a gravity bong? Damn, I feel so sorry for those kids, subject to the ABUSE and NEGLEGENCE that their elders show them. I mean come on, it's SOUTH. You sheep-shagging sons of hoars.

Anyways, I digress. I should save the truth for those who dare insult the glorious Shogunate, like the god damn hosts themselves. Saugeais, who neglected to mention the glorious Yorozuya anywhere on their list. I mean, it's not like we're second in the world and who the fuck's heard of Saugeais. What did they ever do to earn the right to host this thing, (most likely suck off a couple people at this new-fangled NSRB, who I should mention won't even extend membership to the glorious Yorozuya but clearly does to nations like Saugeais who show a level of ignorance that would make the drunks of Sorthern Northland look smart. Which, if you have ever spent time with those poor souls, you'd know to be very hard. I mean, the Sortherners, or from now on the Southerners are just plain stupid. An inbred lot that cares about nothing more than beer. Idiots couldn't even pick a DECENT FUCKING NATIONAL ANIMAL. I mean, a DONKEY. COME THE FUCK ON, who would want to pick such a dirty beast. In my opinion, which is also Natural Law AND THE FUCKING TRUTH, donkeys aren't even fit to be eaten by the lowliest of scum in Saugeais, which is the whole country. Still, being the noble person that I am, I'll forgo judgement for a little while and let them prove that they really do suck at life with their actions at the RLWC, a competition which I remind you was once hosted in the glorious nation of The Yorozuya.

See you at the cup, pussies.

Postby Wolfmanne » Thu Sep 29, 2011 3:31 am

Over the years, Rugby League in Wolfmanne has changed; it is a far larger sport and has experienced growth. It is competing with American football and could potentially be the sixth most popular sport in Wolfmanne. Rugby union remains the second most popular sport with Ice hockey third, Football fourth and Gaelic football fifth. The most popular is Lacrosse, the main summer sport in Wolfmanne along with Cricket (for men) and Softball (for girls).

Once exclusive to the province of Oxfordterra, it is expanded to another, Lexington, to the south of it. The major league of Wolfmanne in the sport the Wolfmanni League12, has 5 teams in Oxfordterra, 4 in Lexington and 3 elsewhere. Many of the former semi-professionals which made up the old team are now full-on professionals; many are paid excellent salaries. In Lexington there is a growth of Rugby Union players converting to the Rugby League code, which can be attributed to the folding of the Lexington Rugby Colt20, a U20 Rugby union league for those wished to be drafted in the Wolfmanne Premiership.

While participation isn't that high, spectators are; millions of telesets are expected to tune into the Rugby League World Cup and watch as the Red Wolves, in contrast to the Blue Wolves for Rugby union, compete in the RLWC. While not a favourite, Wolfmanne are a strong team nonetheless and are a favourite for qualifying to the Round of 16 and possibly the Quarter Finals, which would be further than where the Rugby World Cup team came four years ago (third in the Group Stages).

Roster

There have been several roster changes; there are more younger players now and a much larger pool to chose from. However all four substitutes from four years ago are now starters. Meanwhile, Joey Barnes has been appointed as Head Coach once again, after managing the Bolton Aces RLFC for four years, as the national team, along with many others, only compete in the Rugby League World Cup.

Along with the four substitutes, three backs and three forwards from the last Rugby League World Cup remain in the squad; they too are also starting. Gary Campbell has been designated as Captain, while Lloyd Bishop and Johnathan Lord have been designated Alternate captains.

Starting lineup

1. Toby Taylor-Thomas (Fullback, 27 years, 1.81m, Lexington City Rovers RLC)
Toby Taylor-Thomas is a player slightly below 6 foot. He is an excellent Fullback; able to make hard, strong tackles, think quickly, keep calm under pressure and kick the ball. Taylor has had four caps so far for the international squad, no of them starts and this Rugby League World Cup means that he will be starting for the first time.
2. Declan Greenwood (Right winger, 22 years, 1.78m, Bolton Aces RLFC)
The Winger made an impact as soon as he entered; he was already a potential 400m runner for the Wolfmanni Olympic team, however chose to dedicate himself to Rugby League. Drafted by the Bolton Aces in the first round 3rd overall was an honour for him and he has developed as the Aces top try scorer.
3. Dylan Chan (Right centre, 24 years, 1.85m, Oxfordterra Shock FC)
Dylan Chans' entry was no surprise; Chan is tall but still has excellent footwork, able to side-step opponents and offload it to the Winger to score the all important try. Chan is famous for being an excellent partner to Carter Carlyle, who also plays for Oxfordterra Shock. Together they have scored many tries and assists. He was drafted in the Second Round 13th overall.
4. Carter Carlyle (Left centre, 27 years, 1.82m, Oxfordterra Shock FC)
Carlyle, despite being shorter than Chan, is still a capable Left centre; Carlyle is able to sidestep around opponents and offload it to the Winger. He relies heavily on Dylan Chan, as he too must be an option, while being an option for Chan as well. Carylyle is able to sprint for a long period, although not at the speed of a Winger and a determined Fullback or Winger can bring him down quite easily but nevertheless, he's still a top-class player for Wolfmanne.
5. John West (Left winger, 29 years, 1.78m, Pinetown Pikes RC)
John West is a veteran from the Rugby League World Cup. He is a much more developed player, despite being older and has far more experience now. West's induction into the squad was controversial, as he isn't the top scoring Winger. The Pinetown Pikes, a struggling team who never make the playoffs, is his club and he rarely gets ball time; he has the pace and skill but sadly for him, his teammates don't.
6. Gary Campbell (C) (Stand-off centre, 30 years, 1.76m, Springfield Clovers RLFC)
The Captain of the Springfield Clovers and now the Wolfmanni team, Campbell is a playmaker, able to dictate the play the way he likes it. He already has RLWC experience and was the former kicker for the team, although now he is only the second choice Kicker. Without him it would had been unlikely that Wolfmanne would had made the Second Round in the last RLWC.
7. William Higgins (Scrum-half, 30 years, 1.73m, Alleuoins Avengers FC)
Higgins was the scrum-half at the last Rugby League World Cup. An excellent passer, he know where to be and is always the first man there. He has a short but fast sprint which can be used to gain ground before passing it off to Campbell. Higgins is infamous in Wolfmanne for scoring a try after a single attempt, running halfway across the field and scoring a try during the playoff final between Alleuoins and Springfield, which ultimately won the Barnes Cup.
8. Rory Armstrong (Prop, 24 years, 1.87m, Oldborough Saints United RLFC)
Armstrong is a man who can play Prop; a tall, heavy enforcer able to smash through lines. Armstrong was drafted 17th overall. He also has a heavy tackle, which is powerful enough to send someone flying several yards back. While Armstrong isn't the fastest man on the pitch, he is still an excellent Tough Guy for the team.
9. Kurt Schmidt (Hooker, 28 years, 1.77m, Oldborough Saints United RLFC)
Playing along side Armstrong for the Saints, Schmidt has the saving tackle of a Fullback and the speed of a jet. Schmidt is able to tackle effectively and this made made him valuable to the Saints; seeing potential in him, they bought him as a Free Agent just before the draft, however Schmidt certainly would had been a Round 1 - 2 player. Schmidt already has RLWC caps and is happy to add more.
10. Joseph David-Thompson (Prop, 24 years, 1.84m, Gailwyfle Guardians RLC)
David-Thompson is seen as a villain by many Rugby league spectators in Wolfmanne; he finished almost every season with the most Yellow and Red Cards. However he also has a track record for making people hate to play him and giving them Yellow Cards. David-Thompson in the national squad will probably generate controversy but all the players he's playing with are now his teammates. However in a club game, he is an excellent player, able to spearhead an attack with the ball quickly. He needs a clean record for the Rugby League World Cup and he has promised to be on his 'best behaviour'.
11. Johnathan Lord (Second Row, 27 years, 1.88m, Gailwyfle Guardians RLC)
Lord already has Rugby League World Cup caps and Captaincy of the Gailwyfle Guardians RLC. He is obviously someone who should be in the new squad. Lord is a fast runner and also uses his height as well to smash through lines at sprinting speed. He has the record number of tries for Forwards in the Wolfmanni League12 and as a result, has been granted alternate captaincy of the national team as well.
12. James Knight (Second Row, 31 years, 1.91m, Olympia Rampage FC)
As someone who has already been a starter on the Rugby League World Cup squad, Knight has first hand international experience. Knight is likely to be the Rampage's few decent players; Olympia Rampage has only reached one Barnes Cup playoff, where it played two matches, had a few beers and went home. Knight is the 6th Forward with most tries scored and the 2nd most as a Second Row, behind Johnathan Lord. The 'Old Man' has declining skill but still enough to stay in for a few more years.
13. Lloyd Bishop (Lock, 34 years, 1.88m, Olympia Rampage FC)
Lloyd Bishop has been struggling in Rugby league recently. His brother, Peter, converted to the Rugby union code and now plays as a Flanker for the national side. Ever since this has happened, he has struggled and has had a lot of stress - so much that he refused to take part in the Barnes Cup playoffs. Bishop needs regular counselling as he has become depressed after his recent divorce and is a heavy alcoholic now but Joey Barnes believes his old flare can be revived with more international caps. Can it?

Substitutes

14. Aden Boyle (Utility back, 26 years, 1.81m, Bolton Aces RLFC)
Aden Boyle, nicknamed as King Rugby League of Wolfmanne, is an excellent utility back; he has played every single position and often finds himself on the bench, being brought on when the moment needs it. Aden has confessed that 'he'd made a mistake making himself Wolfmanne's best player'. He prefers to play in the Centre, Winger and Fullback positions but can also play Stand-off half and Scrum-half. Aden Boyle plays for the Bolton Aces and knows Joey Barnes enough.
15. Ellis Shaw (Stand-off half, 24 years, 1.79m, Lexington City Rovers RLC
Ellis Shaw has played in the same team as Johnathan Lord and was originally made the 21st man picked but Lord personally requested him to be on the bench. Ellis Shaw isn't regarded as an excellent Stand-off half but is still quite decent. Shaw is the Vice Captain of the Lexington Rovers and has tactical experience, meaning he knows how to play Stand-off half. He can also play Scrum-half, which is his secondary position but is not a Utillity back in the sense he can play any position.
16. Bryce Murphy (Second Row/Lock, 23 years, 1.91m, Oxfordterra Shock FC)
Bryce Murphy is the lankiest person in the team; he is a fast runner and able to smash through the opposition. He is an excellent substitute when needed and is likely to peak in future years.
17. Roberto Gallo (Prop/Hooker, 29 years, 1.78m, Alleuoins Avengers FC)
Gallo is the only person not from Oxfordterra or Lexington and of non-Anglo-Irish descent (he is Italian). Gallo, despite having the Prop's weight, is still a fast runner and is short enough to play Hooker. He is an excellent Dummy Half and is able to create holes in the opposition's defence. While he doesn't have the Prop's full strength or the Hooker's full speed, he is still a good all-round player in the Forwards.

Reserves

18. Harrison Cartwright (Utility back, 20 years, 1.72m, Lexington City Rovers RLC)
Cartwright is the youngest person in the team; he has just been recently drafted first and is playing for the Alleuoins Avenegers FC. Although he played Fullback for his University team, he is used as an Utility back. Cartwright is not at the peak of his ability but within four years, he is expected to be starting one the lineup in the next Rugby League World Cup.
19. Jay Perry (Lock, 21 years, 1.81m, Lexington City Rovers)
Jay Perry was drafted the year before Cartwright first overall. He plays Lock and is a decent ball handler. He has played Scrum-half several times for Lexington, which makes him the only two-way player in the squad, although he will probably not play as a Scrum-half.
20. Archie Freeman (Second Row, 30 years, 1.84m, Pinetown Pikes FC
Freeman is an old player and is way below the peak of his performance. He plays for the Pinetown Pikes and is likely to be released, as Freeman has stated he would like to retire.
21. Ryan Reynolds (Fullback, 19 years, University of Syracuse)
Reynolds is the only University player in the team. He plays as the WInger for his team and is the top scoring player based upon points for Syracuse, most of them from kicks but also from superb kickoff returns, where has has had 4 in a season.

Saugeais National Journal
Country gets ready for Rugby League World Cup

Saugeais has been dressing itself up in recent months: putting up the banners, cleaning up the streets, putting on a warm attitude, all in preparation for the arrival of the Rugby League World Cup. Cities around the country that have been chosen especially to host the competition have had extra time to prepare, with the arrival of three new stadiums (Titan World Cup Park, Lowlands Stadium, and Jeanfield) to hold the multitude of rugby fans that will descend upon Saugeais. "We are proud to have been given the opportunity to host such a wonderful event," said Saugeais Rugby Committee president Kevin Sullivan. "We promise not to disappoint the players or the fans, and to eventually put on a great event." The Saugeais Rugby League head coach Josef Nevezski stated that playing on your home fields should give you an advantage. "I truly believe that home field advantage exists in sports. The roaring of the crowd for you to succeed certainly drives our players on, and I expect nothing less than great performances here with the World Cup being hosted by us." The current champions of the Rugby League Word Cup are Virabia. Saugeais' best finish was a quarterfinal appearance during the last World Cup.

Cynoceph Rugby League Week

As the national rugby league team head off to the Franklin Grounds, Metalton in Saugeais for the group stage of RLWCIX, we were able to catch up with the starting fullback J.Doogane for a brief chat about the upcoming world cup, the team's chances and how the team is preparing for their first foray onto the global stage.

PLAYER PROFILE
Image
Joshua Doogane
Position: Fullback
Club: Central City (Indica)
Age: 21
Height: 189cm
Weight: 93kg
  • Tackle breaker
  • Prolific speed
  • Good anticipation
  • Decent under high ball
  • Poor consistency
CRLW: Thanks for your time Joshua. I bet you're looking forward to the World Cup?

JD: You betcha. It's an honour to be selected to play and we all want to go out there and do everybody back home proud.

CRLW: In the group stage you will be facing a tough challenge from ranked teams Logria and Kulverint. How is the team preparing for those matches?

JD: They are both excellent teams. Logria will be a tough test, and Kulverint have threats lurking throughout their line; we will need to contain their one, seven and nine in order to compete.

CRLW: You had a great season for Central City, do you think you will be able to carry that form through to the cup.

JD: I dunno. I just play my footy and what happens, happens.

CRLW: You were certainly unlucky to get knocked out in the quarter finals, losing to a late try to eventual champions, Central Park Wanderers. Some say it was your knock on which cost your team the game. Do you still relive that match in your head?

JD: I don't really want to talk about it. We were so close, and then to see them win the title was very hard. That could have been us.

CRLW: You're still young, plenty of time to make amends. Back to the national team, what style of play will the team be looking to employ? Will you look to work it up the middle, or spread the ball outside to the edges?

JD: A bit of both really. I don't really wanna give anythin' away, but we feel confident in lettin' our football adapt to the conditions. We have a wealth of talent across the field, so we can hit the ball up through the middle, or move it through our hands if they bunch up too much.

CRLW: How has camp been so far? You've been together for a week, and the coach has left flying out to Saugeais to the last minute. Do you think you will have time to get acclimatised?

JD: I don't fink it will be a problem. We all have faith in coach Furner, so I am sure he knows what he is doing. It has given us a good chance to come together as a squad and work on our football as a complete unit.

CRLW: How has the team come together? The first match against Mytannion should prove a guide of where we are, surely?

JD: I fink we 'ave a good squad, and we are comfortable playin' together. You have to remember we have quite a few guys here used to playin' at a club level together, so they already know each other's game. It has just been a matter of those from different clubs gettin' used to each other, and the time together before we leave has been very good. I fink we can come out firing with a win.

CRLW: You certainly sound confident, and I hope you're right. Best of luck for the tournament ahead, I'm sure you will all do the nation proud.

JD: Thanks for havin' me.

Chetkosk Rugby League National Squad

Home/Away Kits

Nickname = The Antlers
Style Modifier = +3.0

Previously in NationStates...
In the last edition of this tournament Chetkosk entered unranked and unnoticed by the world. Through outstanding efforts on the pitch (and off it, for Rugby veteran and manager Kiril Bushkov, although we're not allowed to talk about that escapade) the Antlers reached the final against the odds, and were finally vanquished by the hosts and reigning champions, Virabia. Now more experienced, more skilled and more famous than before, Chetkosk returns to the Rugby League World Cup to attempt to improve on last time's 2nd place.

Look out for:
Andrey Simplicevic, star player and vice captain.
Aslan Kamensky, captain and part-time underwear model.
Ilya Lavrentiev, mountain of a man, though daily reminded of his 16th of an inch shortfall compared to Bushkov.
Evgeny Prishchepenko, fastest wing in the country
and finally...

Kiril Bushkov, manager and spy-evader extraordinaire.

RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP STARTS TOMORROW!

Lithatrius Amongst Championship Favourites

The 9th Rugby League World Cup starts tomorrow in Saugeais, with Lithatrius amongst the favourites in what is likely to be a heavily contested tournament. With the Lithatrianos ranked 7th in the world, bookmakers across the nation have given the national team good odds to do well, with slim odds offered to make the Quarter-Finals. Drawn into what can be described as a favourable group, the Lithatrianos have been matched up against 1 other ranked team (Swartaz - ranked 18th [11 places below Lithatrius]) and 3 other unranked teams (ABK, Kernansquillec and Prince Bartholomew Islands), bookmakers have offered strong odds of qualification. Odds below:

Other strong contenders in the tournament include:

  • Virabia: - Ranked first in the world, Virabia face an easy group. The only contenders are Cyborg Holland, ranked 11th in the world, and Virabia offer one of the strongest teams offered in international Rugby League for a long time.
  • Chetkosk: - A suprise offer, Chetkosk are ranked 6th in the world, one ahead of the Lithatrianos. One of only 2 groups to have 3 ranked teams, Lithatrian scouts have suggested that Chetkosk could be dark horses here.
  • Logria: - Many peoples favourites in the competition, Logria offer a strong team that Lithatrius could struggle against if drawn. Smart, professional and composed, the 5th ranked team in the world are a tough challenge.

A bye day to start a competition was a bit odd for the players themselves. For those teams playing a match in the opening round of matches pre-tournament training would be over. Tonight would be one of relaxation, a sort of inbetween of preparing and playing. Tomorrow those sides not among the top seeds would start their Rugby League World Campaign whilst the favourites watched on and observed. The Sorthern side among those watching on from the stands or televisions having trained tomorrow.

Their tournament might not be starting just yet, but the tournament itself was. That of course brought with it the various build-up. Newspapers offering rather one eyed predictions, bookmakers apprantly entirely writing off the higher ranked top seeds in favour of top seeds with low ranking points. The players themselves were aware of these things. As much as Eadbhárd Ó Maolomhnaigh the newly installed coach of the Sorthern team, and a winner of the tournament as a player, tried to keep his players shielded from the media there was little he could do to stop the hotel putting newspapers out.

Not just local newspapers either but international ones. A group of ten or so players had taken to a quiet room within the hotel and taken to reading those newspapers. León Jiménez, captain and a man actually senior in years to his coach had been the last of the group to enter the room and as such had been left to read what no one else wanted.

The Fuji Chronicle barely even deserved to be called a rag. It was utter drivel, barely fit to use as toilet paper in the eyes of many. Their rugby league columnist Ju-San in particular had made something of a name for himself over the years. As a brash, sanctimonious, self opinionated, reactionary eejit. Little it appeared had changed since he last spouted his nonsense.

“Yer reading that Ju-San idiot Leó? Not very nice what he said about yer mum is it?” shouted Fearghal Ó Dubhda, one of the young players, from across the room. As well read as some of them may have been there remained an element of school playground 'banter' about them.

“Now, now Fearghal, don't get too full of yourself.” noted Sean Freeman, clubmate of Ó Dubhda and close friend, “I think your mum was included as well.”

Jiménez though barely took notice of the exchanges flying across the room, instead he preferred to force his way through Ju-San's piece. He wasn't sure why, it's wasn't exactly enlightening, but he did it anyway. To appreciate the good you sometimes had to take in the bad.

“H-O-A-R.” he eventually noted.

“Yer what la'?” came the response from Ó Dubhda after a couple of seconds silence.

“H-O-A-R.” Jiménez repeated, “That's the word he uses, not whore, W-H-O-R-E. Hoar, adjective, especially poetic white or greyish-white, especially with age or frost. 'You sheep-shagging sons of hoars' is what he says.”

“Well, well, well, aren't you Mr. Spelling Fucking Bee champion? And after he made a big point of the difference between Sorth and south, he goes and calls us sons of grey haired women rather than sluts?” grinned Ó Dubdha, “So how do we take the piss out of him for that?”

“Simple init, we dye our hair grey for our first match.” offered Brennen.

It was an idea that seemed to go down well. Various players nodded and murmured their agreement whilst prop Andreas Schwartz offered his approval.

“Yeah we should do that. Good idea Sean. Easy for you mind, you don't even need to dye your hair, you greyed years ago!”
