The Dream of 1000 Cats [questions/comments invited]

Postby 1000 Cats » Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:34 am

Comments and questions are invited and encouraged, and you can totally post them in reply to this thread. It not only makes me think and gives me ideas, but also makes me feel pretty great. :) Thanks!

NAME: H:ò:c ("The World") or Cýˑhz ("Many Cats") - [OOC, I refer to it as the Dream]
DEMONYM: Cŷˑ (plural Cŷˑŷ) (Cat - Cats)

We are a primitive nation with no formal control over our individuals, who are large, sapient, but most certainly not anthropomorphic cats. We are divided into several cultures, which vary considerably in physiology and sociology. Like cats in most worlds, we are not terribly gregarious or motivated; our largest groups are of about one hundred individuals, although it's very uncommon to find groups of greater than thirty; most are only comprised of one to three families. Population density is low, and there are only a few million cats in the world. Some individuals have no group, family, or tribe, often due to traumatic events or age and instead wander between territories spreading supposed wisdom - these individuals are known as àrüe. We have no technology beyond agriculture (employed purely for entertainment and cultural reasons, especially the hypnagogic narcotic plant known as óce), some fishing techniques, and basic construction of crude shelter. Fire is rarely used. Sleeping and dreaming is important culturally, and, usually with the aid of óce, for amusement, reflection, or even communication with other dreamers depending on the skill of the sleeper. Conflict between groups is constant. Most death is from old age, malnutrition, or said conflict.

BACKSTORY

Image

At first, it was just one cat’s dream. A cat: a queen, in every sense of the word, in charisma, beauty and love for her fellows; and also in tragedy. As were so many, at that time – if such a word can be used, for as we will see, time can be difficult to place – cats were beneath the paws of men, and this fair queen was little more than an agent, a thrall to a human family. Her well-being, her freedom and her capacity were not of her own volition, but she knew no different. This is how things always were then, just as this is how things always were now; it simply never happened that cats should be at once hale and unfettered. Like so many, she believed herself happy.

And perhaps she was happy, for a while. But as so many stories go, that happiness was shattered, hardly ironically any more, by love. This queen’s luxurious blue form, so prized by her human owners, was instead given freely and in gladness to a roving tom. In human society, everything is reckoned to be worth something, but the results of this young romance were deemed without value to the humans, and thus, as things were, without value at all. They were drowned, as was the custom, and the queen was left in despair by the fire indoors as her kittens’ distant cries for help died away.

Image

It was through this irreproachable sorrow that the young queen snapped out of her broken view of the terrible world in which she lived: in which cats were at the beck and call of human masters, in which they starved or were killed by their noxious machines, and in which kittens were drowned for the colour of their coat. She sought out an answer, some hope of freedom that might allow her to carry on through life and not merely give herself in to the fire. She closed her eyes. She slept.

She dreamed.

Image

In the world of Dream, a plain of bones that stretched on forever, she traveled. Grinning skulls of every beast barred her way, over which she leapt. Jagged ribs cut at her feet, which she kicked. Unyielding, she at last came to the home of Dream, a yawning crevice rimmed with fearsome guards. Steeling herself, she entered.

Dream was there: an immense, shadowy cat, with eyes like red moons. He invited her in, and questioned her purpose there. Of perfect breeding, she answered plainly: she sought revelation. He gave her the Truth.

The truth is that cats once dominated the world. That they, immense beasts themselves, lived in luxury in lush lands, kings and queens all. That freedom was given to each and every feline. And that mankind, so malevolent and destructive, was nothing more than a species of small creatures which existed to groom, amuse, and serve as amusing prey for the magnificent race of cat. They ran, we would give chase, and then we would eat. The sight of this sport brought a purr to the blue queen’s throat. But Dream’s vision continued.

Reality, he said, is transient. It is destroyed and created anew each night, which each sleeper as she dreamt. The humans know this, or once did, for in that time of cat lords and ladies, they gathered together, and they dreamed. A thousand of them dreamed, all at once, of the world that you, reader, know well: the world into which the queen’s children were brought, and the one from which they were taken away. Reality changed, and thus mankind became – or rather, had always been – giant creatures capable of intelligent thought and industry, and furthermore, capable of enslaving all other creatures brought before it. We became the prey.

With this, the vision closed. With her newfound understanding, and the blessing of Dream, the queen returned to the waking world. That night, she left her human masters to share what she had learned: the terror of the life she had known, and the hope of the life she knew was waiting for her, and all cats, just beyond a dream. The queen, known now as “mistress”, traveled the world, telling all she came across of her revelation and wishing for a brighter future. A brighter past. A thousand men, it had been; a mere thousand had slept and in doing so changed the universe to that terrible form.

A thousand cats…

SOCIETY

Image

The Dream of 1000 Cats is, firstly, not merely 1000 cats. However, since any number over 1000 just doesn’t come into the context of everyday life for even the most philosophical of our kind, 1000 will have to do. Our true population figure is unknown, but it is likely a few million.

There is no government in any real sense; society is divided up according to who lives with whom, followed by who lives nearby whom, in a loose communal format that tends to be quite transient, although certain individuals and tribes/families are looked upon with reverence and respect by their neighbors, and are sometimes conferred special titles. Families will often live together for some time before they become too large and settle down in other lands nearby. Territories can be as small as just a few square kilometers, or as large as several hundred. They are not too strictly held, but if an individual displeases the owner of an area, he will flee rather than defend himself, as the former is taboo and, regardless, rarely goes well for the transgressor.

Even those who technically are of separate tribes or families can work together to some extent: between their private ranges is usually NˑRNCŶ, or no-cat's-land of varying size, in which individuals can freely exchange gossip and resources, work out local politics, and engage in other, less proactive activities. Celebrations, which are frequent, tend to blur borders, often to the point of nonexistence.

What other societies call murder is very common in our world: traveling individuals may be lethally injured by others without much care. This is not considered terrible, but rather a necessity to the protection of oneself and those under one’s care. Other common causes of death are starvation (which is usually what leads individuals to travel carelessly), accident, and genetic diseases such as cancer and heart disease, as medicine is reserved to common knowledge remedies applied to oneself or by loved ones. There is little wide-scale sociability between cats, even here.

Not all interactions are negative, however. Those that live together in the same territory tend to be fiercely protective of one another, and love is considered a natural aspect of life with other cats. There is also a rudimentary class system that exists in one form or another regardless of region.

The first is the landed cat (CŶˑRN). This is a cat who, individually or collectively, owns land. They make up the large majority of the population in all parts of the world.

The second is the noble (NÙ:E). These are cats who, usually by blood, have a great deal of influence over a particular area. Their territories can be thought of as a second, larger level of those of the landed cats. NÙ:E are often descended from àrüe or cŷˑrn who have settled in a particular area as something of a de-facto leader who keeps conflicts to a minimum and aids in organization in the case of a crisis, in exchange for free access to each range within his or her domain. It should be noted that the division between the NÙ:E and the ÀRÜE (and sometimes even the NÙ:E and the CŶˑŶRN) is often quite blurry, and thus some individuals may be called, "NÙ:E" who do not exactly meet the criteria listed here; it is more a title of recognition rather than anything collective or official. NÙ:E only occupy less than a third of the world, and thus are in a rather small minority.

The third is the philosopher or prophet (ÀRÜE), who makes up a little over one percent of the population. They have no land of their own, usually due to a disaster befallen them or else due to old age, and thus tend to travel instead. Some ÀRÜE frequent only a small area, while others, such as the famed NÙ:Âˑ, may travel the whole world. They are reckoned to be intelligent and insightful, with a great amount of, often horrific, experience behind them, which cats all over are fascinated by. They trade in secrets and philosophy in return for a place to stay briefly and a meal, and though they do not tend to live long, many of the most famous (and infamous) cats have been ÀRÜE.

There is really very little difference sociologically between the sexes, unlike in most primate societies, likely because even though there is a significant size difference between toms and queens, the queens tend to still be very much capable of holding their own in a fight, which can be lethal. The main difference, then, is in child-rearing. In many cultures, notably the NHX and KÈC, and CŶ in some regions, toms have little to do with the raising of kits.

This lack of pervasive gender difference, combined with a society that tends to value independence and self-realization, makes for an extremely liberal culture in all areas regarding gender and sexual relations: although cats do not tend to label others or themselves based on their preferences, homosexuality is common and practiced openly, and even interspecies sexual relations are not unheard of and, in at least one source, are even known to be celebrated.

There are, however, ways in which those whose sexual preferences are pervasively non-standard are treated differently. While relationships with humans, which are often kept as companions (see above) are not generally frowned upon, those who have relations with more intimidating species often have difficulties in larger societies, simply due to fear and suspicion. Additionally, those who frequently take the position of the opposite sex in intercourse, and who view themselves as being of that gender, may naturally and perhaps unknowingly undergo hormonal changes that make them smell somewhat more like the opposite sex. These individuals are called ÂCÔC, and are usually viewed, even by mates, as being of the sex they prefer, regardless of their anatomy.

Image

Humans are, as in the original world, little more than beasts which serve primarily for the amusement of the dominant species. They are significantly smaller than the humans of the reality which we run: indeed, in size, cats and humans have essentially switched places. They are sometimes even hunted as prey, although this is rarer than one may be led to believe by second-hand sources. They are, by and large, not terribly intelligent - at least not as intelligent as their feline overlords - but warning is often given that they are sentient and capable of vengeful thought, so, along with the other lesser species of the world, they are not typically treated with wanton cruelty.

Image

Goods are given and taken freely between such individuals, and colonies can exceed thirty individuals (although tend to be fewer than ten). Trade between territories also exists, usually for natural resources that cannot be easily come across. Famously, catnip is a chief commodity.

Food is, apart from the occasional human, usually large game, large rodents, and, in some areas, fish, although any form of meat will be eaten by a cat hungry enough. Agriculture is restricted to the growth of certain plants and herbs, not for any value for sustenance, but fishing, where it is prominent, often leads to some innovation in cats. Platforms over the water are often constructed to allow a cat to get further out into a lake or stream, as well as attract prey by providing apparent shelter. In some areas, particularly in Europe and parts of southeast Asia, crude fish farms have even been erected in natural bodies of water. Another perhaps surprising construction is a basket, which, made from certain grasses, treated twigs, or sinews, can even be made watertight, and is carried in the mouth or at the hip. Construction techniques vary by area, not by race.

A strain of catnip, usually called ÓCE, is also grown in all but possibly the most northern of cat cultures. This plant, along with certain similar species, are highly important culturally, and sometimes religiously, as a narcotic when smelled or ingested. ÀRÜE are often known to take liberally of it, and it is believed (not without evidence) to be able to connect the user with external realities. More universally applicable, cats are by nature crepuscular, and sleep upwards to eighteen hours per day; therefore ÓCE's hypnagogic properties are valued along with the narcotic.

Beyond ÀRUE, entertainment often has a musical element. Our musicals, called UHYKÁ, tend to be live, spontaneous, and low on cast size - and our music doesn't tend to have lyrics. Pure, raw emotion is instead belted out by the entertainers while they go through the rhythmicized motions of a story - ÀR, with the performers being called ÀRE or UHYKÀE. Love stories are common favourites, and they may be stories that almost everyone knows some version or another of - like that of SỲNÌUS: and NÙ:ÀNÈ:, an ill-fated tom and queen of Europe that were led to a sacrificial field by KÈC extremists - or they may be personal, even personal to the actors themselves. Other genres are enjoyed, though, too: classical stories, like The Sun's Children, or even comedies like those involving the ZˑYÎ: pair HU:ZÀ and IˑÙO:RÍ:I.

The actors themselves, and other entertainers, tend to be wanderers. While cats in your worlds are probably quite a bit more brutish when it comes to gaining influence in an area... well, we can be too, but we can also gain respect by doing this sort of thing. Sometimes these homeless young players will follow an ÀRÜE, offering to help enact their stories, or else they may just get together in a band to try to get food, shelter, foxy ladies, handsome gentlemen, and maybe even settle down in an area without getting the crap beat out of them.

-One theoretically retains all possible rights and control over all non-felids and felid transgressors when within one's own range.
-One does not kill another cat when outside of one's range. Doing so may indicate forfeiture of the right to live.
-One does not kill a first-time transgressor without first giving verbal warning.
-One refers to an individual or object by their gender indicates intimacy or respect.
-One does not refer to another's young as a "son" or a "daughter". Doing so indicates an unwarranted interest.
-One rewards ÀRÜE if is allowed onto your land to speak, with respect and a meal.
-One does not cause undue agony.
-One relocates a freshly killed cat to a place where it will not again be visible.
-One should not otherwise approach a corpse.
-One observes local customs regarding the astronomical and meteorological.
-One greets a newborn with XÎ:Êˑ RỲÉÍZ: ÖA:CU:Êˑ ("My child, awaken, with my blessing") or some variant.
-One does not say "my dam!" to one's dam.
-One does not enter combat with one's kit or one's sire.

RACES

Image
General global distribution of major cat cultures. Original image. (Map out of date; I will make a new one soon)

Cats are scattered across the globe. Certain “races” exist due to significantly lower travel during the last global "greenhouse" period, during which, up until ice sheets and lower sea levels allowed for greater travel, cats began to incompletely speciate. Conception between races is possible but rare, and due to cultural elements they rarely interbreed.

The CŶ are the most widespread and various both physically and culturally, occupying much of Africa and Asia and all of Europe, as well as a few scattered sections of the Americas. They generally weigh between 60-120kg. While they tend to be quite individual and pick up cultural elements from neighboring cultures, they can be identified as being more curious and willing to travel than those of other cultures, as well as a great love for narcotics, which are imbibed casually and frequently by many members.

The NHX occupy portions of northern Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. They tend to be of larger build (100-200kg), and are often of a unique golden hue, perhaps due to their ancestry associated with lions of human-led Earth. Their dialect is not dissimilar from that of the CŶ, but they are well-known both for their slow speech and their “I”, which, although characteristically meowed or mewed in most other dialects, is moaned or groaned. This, along with the muted “R”, is shared with certain other dialects; their most distinguishing phonological idiom is their “Y”, which sounds much like it is being belched. This makes the fact that they’re also known for their relative talkativeness hilariously aggravating.

The KÈC occupies nearly all of Asia and Oceania (including Australia). Potentially similar cultures exist in some parts of South America, which are also presumably covered here. They are sometimes even larger than the NHX (up to 250kg), and are instantly recognizable by their various and exotic pelts that contrast sharply with their eyes, which tend to be bright in colour. Their territories often exist directly alongside those of the CŶ, so the fact that little is known about them is sobering. They are generally considered to be highly asocial, taking up large amounts of territory per individual. Their trade tends to be in exotic meats and pelts, but it is seldom that they come into contact with other cats. Many stories, both admirable and less-so, are told about them among other cultures. They share the minority “I” and “R” with the NHX, on the rare occasion that they have been known to speak. They do, however, as far as is known, share the same language.

The ZˑYÎ occupy the majority of the Americas. They are slightly smaller in build than the CŶ (50-100kg), and have a much smaller genetic pool. It is a common joke among the few other cultures that live in the area that there are in fact only two ZˑYÎ: a brown and a white, called HU:ZÀ and IˑÙO:RÍ:I (roughly translated, Penis-Spine and Somewhat-Too-Small). Needless to say, although the ZˑYÎ have some of the largest colonies of any culture, they interact little with others, and travel around a large home range as a single coordinated unit. It may be because of this that their dialect is quite different from any other: “Y” acts nearly as a stop consonant, and “R” is famously loud. Phonologically, the most striking difference is that “I” has morphed into a whistling noise, which does not occur anywhere else on the planet. Their word formation often significantly (and unpredictably) differs from those of other cultures as well, and they have a few of their own unique words for certain objects and events. Out of all cat dialects, that of the ZˑYÎ may be the closest to being considered a separate language.

The CCXHE only exist in the very northernmost parts of the globe. Their culture and language is often similar to that of the ZˑYÎ, although the cats themselves tend to be slightly smaller (30-80kg), but with much larger feet, ears, and natural weapons. Far from making their appearance comical, through the snow, the sight of them in their dappled white coats is strangely intimidating. Like the ZˑYÎ, they tend to live in larger groups, though perhaps not quite as large as their cousins, and their territories span the largest areas of any culture. This is not only due to the relative rarity of cats at such a latitude, but also due to the necessity of having a wide range in which to hunt, as food is scarce there.

The ZÚKÍ are a medium-sized, spotted race that is relatively uncommon, living only in the southern parts of Africa and parts of South America. They travel little, and are very secretive. However, they may be related to the ZˑYÎ, given both their archaic dialect, which is in many ways similar (although they lack the whistle), and their tendency to live in large groups. They have a rich culture, sometimes even painting their bodies with pigments made from local roots and berries. They also have a greater proclivity for construction, remaining in one area for a long time. It is possible that they have developed technologies and practices that allow them advantages in health and stability over other races.

Your nation looks FUN!

A celebration is in order! You have created a truly unique nation (something that all the Soviet Union Clones, Nazi Germany Clones, and Corporate Dystopias of NationStates can NEVER claim)! Your uniqueness is awesome, and we would like to give you an honorary sledgehammer as a sign of respect.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Contact with other species and nations is rare, and is chiefly done through dreams, which many individuals across all cultures of cat, as well as other species, have mastered, although whether or not this talent for inter-reality communication is recognized by governments and the public is variable. Goods have even been traded this way, as a cat and presumably the individual whom he or she is dreaming of each awaken clutching the object exchanged for. Such dreamers do not tend to be heavily rooted in their own reality, so it is not known what happens if one questions the physics of such an interaction. It is also unknown whether larger-scale exchanges could be made, or even the transposition or transportation of an individual or individuals between realities. Should this be the case, however, those cats who are predisposed to frequent dreaming also tend to be much less suspicious and protective of their property (should they own any at all, as the majority may be considered ÀRÜE), so it is unlikely that they will be surpassed, at least in this world, in their potential as ambassadors.

Communication via dreaming can be considered pseudo-linguistic. That is, an individual may awaken, remember having spoken to someone, but the language used does not tend to bear importance to whether or not it is understood. For instance, one may dream that he or she was speaking a language that she could understand at the time but could not upon awakening. Thus, the fact that the cat language looks like it was pinned together by a bunch of drug addicts has very little or no impact upon the level of interaction possible between cats of the world and other species of different realities.

OOC: Ah, an IC response. Maybe you'd like to have an RP where there's a first contact between our nations (and their respective felines)?

This nation is of remarkable design. What is to behold here is truly unique.

I also find the way in which the Dream's "International Relations" operate appealing. The idea of utilising the ambiguity and morphed reality of the dream-state for purposes of communication is one that not all players might be fond of, but which I find intriguing.

Thank you! The backstory is entirely Gaiman's, so I can't take credit for that, but the language, society, cultures, all that are mine.

Yes, the whole idea of communication by dreaming might be tough to implement, but I know I'm not the only one out there with some sort of "interdimensional" or whatever nation, so if it can be worked with, it means the possibilities are wide open. To everyone who doesn't reject sort of a pseudo-fantastic setting, I guess, but I've always admired how Gaiman could write that sort of bizarre thing into an otherwise very real and modern world.

No, but I've been meaning to make one. Don't have a whole lot of time due to being in marching band and such. I'll try to make one soon, though.

Alright. I'd want anyone I'm RPing with to be familiar with the important bits (not the language, obviously) in this thread, and likewise I'd want to know as much about their nation as possible. :)

So, yeah. Intelligent felines and the dreaming bit made me wonder, any chance that you've read H.P. Lovecraft's Dream Quest for Unknown Kaddath? Your nation reminds me of the book, because the protagonist wanders around the Dreamworld and finds a city populated with intelligent cats. He befriends a cat, and later the cats save him from space aliens (typical Lovecraft story).

Seriousness is a Sin to my people! RP-ing a very erratically cultured people, bound to cause conflict somehow. I am RP-ing a race of walrus-people. If you do not like this fact, then just imagine them as jolly fat people with mustaches. It's basically the same thing anyway.
Madness is the Key. Arson should be legalized, and robbing stagecoaches is good for the economy.

No, I haven't. And actually, I usually don't like Lovecraft's stuff. Just not a fan of his style. I might have to make an exception, though... thanks for the suggestion.

Updated with a few images in History and Society. The Cultures map turned out horribly because it turns out MS Paint ain't what it used to be. Bit the bullet and installed Photoshop halfway through. Might clean it up later (and fix a couple inconsistencies) but it's relatively accurate for now.

This factbook is the second best we have ever read, second, of course, only to our own. Bravo, good sir or madame. Bravo.

Thank you very much. :) Next update will probably be more on society. Cultural quirks, spiritual ideas, etc. May start a separate section, though.

Also, it's sir. ;)

This is badass, just plain epic. I particularly find your nation's language interesting, I happen to be an amateur linguist. I plan on using a language I started making a while ago for my nation as well, you've given me even more reason to do so.

Thanks very much! I'm tickled that you're enjoying the language. If you've got some aspects of your conlang you'd like to share too, I'll gladly talk sunup to sundown about them.

This is one of the best Factbooks I've seen so far.
I approve.

The language is a quite interesting and unique you included into your factbook, and I quite like it [but can't speak a lick of it :p ]
I've been making a conlang for my nation, but I keep starting over early so I haven't gotton really far on it
