Name wanted

Postby Cabra West » Mon Sep 21, 2009 1:24 am

My husband (wow, it still feels weird calling him that!) and me are currently looking to buy a house.
Now, we recently found one we adore, and we've put an offer in. We don't have it yet, but there's a good chance we'll be getting it, so cross your fingers for us ;)
Anyway, reason of this thread is, the house doesn't have a number, but is currently named after a saint. And since neither himself nor me can relate to that in any way at all, we're thinking of re-naming it once we have it, only we can't decide on a name that would fit... we neither of us want to go for the traditional corny kind of names like Pine View, or Bluebell Meadows or something along those lines, but we wouldn't mind letting the location of it play part of the name. It's in a village outside Cork, on a hillside overlooking fields and some hills.
I was thinking of "The Nest", but hubby says that reminds him too much of Hitler's Eagle's Nest. He ruled out "The Burrow" the moment I mentioned Harry Potter, and "The Shire" was out for the same literary dislike on his side.

Can anybody suggest anything? I'm just gathering ideas at the moment, so any input would be much appreciated! :)
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

Which, all things considered, I guess comes as no surprise.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

I'd call it submarine.
The kind of middle-class mentality which actuates both those responsible for strategy and government has little knowledge of the new psychology and organizing ability of the totalitarian States. The forces we are fighting are governed neither by the old strategy nor follow the old tactics.

Hehe... I kinda like the first one ;)

We don't live near the sea, but there are so many houses in this country named after landscape features that cannot be found in a 30-mile radius around the place, it sort of takes the irony out of a name like Seaview.

Elsewhere.

(Like all those crass rich businessmen who call their yachts "The Office", so they can say "Oh I was at The Office on Sunday and ...".)

Think of it:
"Oh, my husband's Elsewhere at the moment ..."

"Oh, dear, I left it Elsewhere, let me just get back to you on that ..."

"Sorry, I've got to be Elsewhere right now, I just hate having to leave this wonderful meeting ..."

"Oh, no, we're not going on holidays this year, we'll be ... Elsewhere." (I like this one, it suggest you're both doing some super-top-secret intense training course.)

Paint it red. For that is the color of fortune and will bring you good luck. You'll need it buying a house in Ireland.
