AOCAF Cup XXXI - RP/Rosters/Scores

Postby Delaclava » Sun Jun 26, 2011 8:49 am

Welcome to the 31st AOCAF Cup, hosted in Delaclava! You can post your rosters and roleplay here, and look for scores when they are posted.

The scorinator will be Commerce Heights' xkoranate 0.3.2, using the NSFS formula with xkoranate-style modifiers. Scorination will occur at 10-11 PM Eastern Time.

There will be four groups of six, and each team will play their groupmates once for a total of five games per team. The top four from each group will advance. After points, the tiebreakers are overall goal differential, head to head result(s), and then wins (note the absence of goals scored or goals allowed as a tiebreaker). If the tie is still not broken but must be to decide advancement to the knockout, one playoff game will be played. The sixteen teams will then be sorted according to points, then overall goal differential, head to head result(s) if applicable, wins, then coin flip. The sixteen teams will then participate in a single-elimination bracket to determine the champion. Preferably, groupmates will not rematch in the round of 16, and I will adjust the bracket so that this happens if the alterations can be minor. The bracket will stay fixed, and teams will not be reseeded after each round.

These are the 24 teams that have signed up to participate, in their respective groups:

Goalkeepers:

1- Roberto BENNEDETTO (Team: FC Mildrid)
Height: 6’4’’ - Weight: 193lbs – Age: 20 years old
Roberto Bennedetto is is the best goalkeeper in Erathore. No doubts about that. He surpassed Galigilygano as the best keeper of the modern day when he put on a flawless display in the 55th World Cup. During his young career, he has won the Seria-A golden glove twice and has won it in the King’s Cup. With so many years in front of him, we could possibly see Bennedetto become the best keeper in the world.
Rating: A+ - Team Relationship: A+ - Morale: A+ - Form: A+

Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 29, Goals 0

12- Alessio Affonso GALIGILYGANO (Team: Juvillian Martinax)
Height: 6'2'' - Weight: 191lbs – Age: 30 years old
Galigilygano has been considered one of the greatest keepers to play in Erathore for the majority of his professional career. Lately that title has been taken from him and bestowed upon the young Roberto Bennedetto. Galigilygano does not care; he is far too professional for that. He missed out on the majority of the 55th World Cup do to him having sustained a serious injury but he looks set to play in this one, albeit as a sub. Galigilygano pulls off saves that he deems to be comfortable and not too risky, but if a more spectacular save is necessary he will not hesitate to perform it. Galigilygano is reluctant to challenge an enemy offender due to him having broken 3 ribs in his first professional game that saw him missing a few games.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: A
Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 25, Goals: 0

23-Atmosa PHERA (Team: Charzzan)
Height: 6'3'' – Weight: 199lbs – Age: 27 years old
If not for his fame and his looks, one may never notice Atmosa Phera. The quite, shy, and good mannered keeper prefers it that way. He is much the same in goal, never adopting the popular keeper stance, rather he stands with his hands by his sides, always never seeming to pay attention but almost always making the saves. He is widely considered the best penalty shot blocker in Erathore.
Rating: B - Team Relationship: A+ - Morale: B+ - Form: B
Played None
Caps: 1, Goals: 0

Defenders:

2- Ermanno GAVINO Amedo (Team: Arro)
Height: 5'8'' – Weight: 160lbs – Age: 29 years old
Gavino is a very skilled and talented player that has carried Arro from Seria-B into Seria-A on his back. He is wonderful at herding opposing forwards onto their weaker foot and pushing them away from goal. If the forward tries to make a break, Gavino uses his wonderful slide tackling skill to dispossess them.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: B – Morale: B – Form: A
Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 39, Goals: 0

3- Fredrico MANLIO (Team: Manlio)
Height: 6' - Weight: 176 – Age: 23 years old
Fredrico Manlio is the great-grandson of Diauiditori Manlio, the great striker of Erathore and founder of the Manlio football club. However there are some on the team who resent him for his connection to Manlio. Despite the immense pressure that comes with this relationship, Fredrico performs very well, almost flawlessly.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: A

Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 39, Goals: 2

4- NERO Romo (Team: FC Mildrid)
Height: 5'8'' - Weight: 167 – Age: 25 years old
Nero has been trained to be a top footballer since his youth, participating in most of the youth high level club teams of the country. Even though he had the misfortune of always landing on a losing team during that age, as a professional he toke Elidoro FC into Seria-A before transferring to the Erathi powerhouse team FC Mildrid.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: B - Morale: A - Form: A

Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 37, Goals: 0

5- Barino DINO (Team: FC Mildrid) - VICE-CAPTAIN
Height: 5'9'' - Weight: 166 - Age: 25 years old
Barino Dino is the best defender in Erathore as exemplified by him being named Defender of the Year in this past season and coming in 5th place for the same award two seasons ago. He is fast, strong, and plays to win. Hopes are high for him as he makes his international debut in this World Cup.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

Played WCs 55, CoHs 47
Caps: 18, Goals: 1

15-Vanni DEL NARAN (Team: Charzzan)
Height: 5'7'' – Weight: 161 – Age: 22 years old
Since being placed on the national team, Naran has found that his domestic and international game have improved immensely. He has crisp passing, good heading, good standing tackles, good speed, just an all around good player.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A – Morale: B – Form: A
Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 24, Goals: 1

21- Mariano ALBERICO (Team: Vincanto)
Height: 6'3'' - Weight: 181 – Age: 29 years old
Alberico is not a clean footballer. Given his brief stint in the military, he likes to argue with officials and players from the other team. A lot. This has resulted in many a yellow and the occasional red. However he produces results so he is kept on the team. He plays hard and plays to win.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: B - Form: A
Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 33, Goals: 0

Midfielders:

6- NARAZO Del Pietro (Team: Charzzan)
Height: 5'7''– Weight: 163lbs – Age: 27 years old
Narazo Del Pietro is a player who can play both sides of the field, although he prefers to play on the right side. His passing has improved immensely and this results in a better game for him and the team. He is pretty good at distributing the ball, but his real strength comes from his slide tackles and his speed.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A – Morale: B – Form: A

Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 39, Goals: 7

7- Alexio DEL NIERAN (Team: Dunboor FC-Cafundéu) -CAPTAIN
Height: 6'1'' – Weight: 165lbs – Age: 22 years old
Alexio is a quiet and respectful footballer. He enjoys training whilst listening to dubstep and classical music. He is equally adapt at offense and defense. He is always respectful to the referees, calmly and rationally arguing with them and if proven wrong he apologizes to, and then thanks the referee. He has been compared to an artist creating a masterpiece on the field and it is evident why. He is widely credited with being the most proficient at bending the ball in Erathore. This has caused many a keeper to scramble and fail to save his ball that curves first one way then another. He recently transferred to one of the best teams in the world, Dunboor FC, on a 3 year, $65 Million contract.
Rating: A+ – Team Relationship: A+ – Morale: A+ – Form: A+

Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 47 (Record Holder), Goals: 37 (Record Holder)

8-Espen Úpaddol ROLODEL (Team: FC Mildrid) --Elf
Height: 6' - Weight: 153lbs - Age: 3251 years old
The first non-human player in Erathore, Rolodel has proved that you don't have to be human to be good at footy. In 47 appearences for FC Mildrid, he found net 37 times, earning him the golden boot and several other awards. He is looking to nab his first few caps and goals in this tournament. Rolodel blends speed, power, and skill together to form a weapon that he uses to deadly effect.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale A - Form: A

None
Caps: 3, Goals: 2

11-Marichristo AMURI (Team: Charzzan)
Height: 5'11'' - Weight: 163lbs - Age: 30 years old
Another newbie to the team and the international scene, Amuri is the classic goalscoring/assisting midfielder. He has incredible stamina and speed, as well as a deadly chip shot for one on one situations. He has good balance and strength too so defenders will have a hard time pushing him off the ball.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

Played None
Caps: 5, Goals: 1

16-Julio LANZIANO (Team: Valengren Kickers-QPEMA)
Height: 5'7'' - Weight: 159lbs - Age: 23 years old
Another player making his debut, Julio Lanizano is one of the premier midfielders in Erathore. He might be small but Julio makes up for it with speed, a sublime left foot, wonderful technical ability, and pure skill. He knows when to pass, when to carry the ball, and when to shoot. Despite numerous offers, Lanziano has admirably stuck with Nicostrato, although rumors are that he would like to move internationally. It will be interesting to see how this affects his play.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A
Played None
Caps: 3, Goals: 1

17-ANTONIO Casento (Team: Astria Yaburi)
Height: 5'11'' - Weight: 173lbs - Age: 24 years old
Antonio Casento almost singlehandedly delivered back to back promotions to Astria Yaburi and this has resulted in AY playing in Seria-A for the first time in their history. He is widely praised for his sheer speed and skill throughout Erathore. Unfortunately for him, Mettis, Rolodel, and Del Nieran are all slightly better then him so he will not be starting. However, he will most likely be a commonly used substitute.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: B+ - Morale A+ - Form: A
Played WCs 55, CoHs 47
Caps: 6, Goals: 2

23- EMLIO Fredrico(Team: CR Submiria-Churchma)
Height: 170cm – Weight: 72kg – Age: 30 years old
Emlio is a player that loves to play the game. He trains everyday, wears his jersey around the house and has been known to sleep in it from time to time. As a player, he works as a second defensive midfielder, with more freedom to go to the attacks, mostly due to his ability in controlling the ball and making precise passes. His favored and most classic move is performing a backwards pass with his heel after catching the ball on a bounce.
Rating: B – Team Relationship: B – Morale: A – Form: B
Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 41, Goals: 2

Forwards:

9- Erurcion Naryaiel (Team: Vincanto)---Elf
Height: 5'10'' – Weight: 149lbs – Age: 8958 years old
Another elf to add to the team. And just like the other one, he is up to the task. Naryaiel is fast, good with the ball, and has a natural talent for getting goals. Just like any striker. But what sets Naryaiel apart is his wonderful passing/opportunity making. He was praised this season, not only for scoring goals, but for his inventive play and long passing. He has a vast array of tricks to use, only Alexio Del Nieran can rival him in that area. Naryaiel is also a set piece expert, scoring and setting up multiple goals on them during this past season.

None
Caps: 0, Goals: 0

10- Gaspare MALVOLIO (Team: Juvillian Martinax)
Height: 5'8'' – Weight: 163lbs – Age: 26 years old
Malvolio is the fastest footballer in Erathore. When he was 13 years old he posted a 4.54 40-yd dash and has continually improved that to wear he runs a 2.56 on a bad day and a 2.14 on a good one. He has impressive dribbling skills to match that speed as well. He also has a massively powerful and fast shot that can go from ground to goal faster then the keepers reflexes.
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A– Morale: A – Form: A

Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 41, Goals: 19

13-Alessandro METTIS (Team: Reial Capital)
Height: 5'8'' - Weight: 161lbs - Age: 25 years old
Competing in his first international tournament, Alessandro Mettis looks set to make a splash. A big one. He assists as many goals as he scores and he scores tons of them. He possess' high stamina, speed, strength, and a good shot. His skill shot is approaching from the left flank and curling a precise lob into the far top corner of the goal. As a person and a teammate, he is very respectful and loves a good laugh, just like the vast majority of Erathi footballers.
Rating: A - Team Relationship: A - Morale: A - Form: A

Played None
Caps: 4, Goals: 1

16-Lucifer ANDREA (Vincanto)
Height: 6'2'' – Weight: 176lbs – Age: 26 years old
Lucifer is a jack of all trades, master of none. He is also damn good at those trades. He's fast, he's strong, he's good. What more must be said?
Rating: A – Team Relationship: A – Morale: A – Form: A[/b]
Played WCs 54/55, CoHs 46/47
Caps: 33, Goals: 15

21-CESC Celestino (Team: Eldorado-Cafundéu)
Height: 5'7'' – Weight: 159lbs – Age: 18 years old
Cesc Celestino is a wonderful forward who, at the age of 18, has already been subject to a $21 Million deal to the best league in the world. With 6 goals in 5 U-21 games and 8 goals in 11 appearances for the senior team, Cesc is undoubtly the most accomplished player of his age. A product of the FC Mildrid Youth Academy and a promising striker FCM slipped him into the senior squad at age 17. He was named player of the week during his professional debut game against Drago de Celio. He finished the season with several awards and 38 appearances and 23 goals. This attracted the attention of Eldorado from Cafundéu, who signed him on a $23 million contract.

Controversy and Minor Riots Reign as AOCAF Cup Squad is Announced

Yes you read it correctly. The AOCAF squad was announced earlier today and already people are protesting and simultaneously silently cheering. First things first. Why? Well that is pretty easily answered. If a nation wishes to participate in the AOCAF they must be in the region of Atlantian Oceania. Which we are. So no problem there right? Wrong.

We used to be part of Rushmore. We still are in fact. Except that's not recognized because we are officially part of Atlantian Oceania. It would take me, what…15 hours to get to Starblaydia? A day? A week? It would take 3 hours to get to Civil Citizenry. See the problem? Of course you do. Now the root behind this is our government and how all they care about is footy (which isn't a bad thing if you aren't in a position of extreme power) and it's affecting us. Moving regions just to compete in a tournament is ridiculous. And people know it. Which is why the good folks in Arro have started to say something about it. A minor protest, around 500 people, but it was still a protest. After chants of, "We're in Rushmore foo'!" and "You smoking cocaine BITCH?" went on, peacekeeping troops showed up. Then the protesters bailed in a smokescreen of tear gas. Yup. Good ole King Lorenzo didn't take too kindly to people protesting so he had his thugs go disband them. No one was seriously injured or killed so that's good. But still it goes to show that people don't like what's going down. And the government doesn't like the people not liking whats going down.

It's easy to see this snowballing into a serious problem. Let's not aggravate the problem any more then we have to people.

Now to take a look at the AOCAF squad we can see………

Carlos Woods---Demolition Expert
0500hrs---26th June, 2011
Arro, Itazan, Erathore (226,782pop)----8th and Main---Servinos (Bar)
Locations of Importance Nearby: Arro Police Headquarters (3761 government agents)---9th and Main

Carlos Woods took one last drag of his cigarette before tossing it to the ground. He glanced up at the 3 men surrounding him. They were like him. They wanted what he wanted. But unlike him, they thought that they could pull it off and survive. He knew they wouldn't. Carlos knew that they may destroy the police headquarters, but he knew they wouldn't make it out alive. But they didn't know that.

"You ready?" he asked in a half whisper. This was their last chance. Last chance to back out. He knew they wouldn't.

"Yes" came the reply, just as he predicted. "Good. Everyone have what they were supposed to bring?" Nods came from the other men. "Alright. Lets do this," said Carlos as he pulled out a 9mm handgun. He was a decent shot and that's all that he needed to be. He wouldn't be a shooter. That's what the other three were for. They were rednecks, spending their free time drinking beer and shooting shit. They would shoot. He would plant explosives. That building would fall. Those corrupt government agents would die. They deserved too. They were corrupt, immoral, and they just deserved it.

The 3 men got their weapons out. A shotgun, EMI Model 90 assault rifle, and a EMI 2010 Pistol were taken out. Perfect for a distraction. Perfect for killing. That would fit the plan thought Carlos to himself as he opened the door to the street. They kill the government agents with the loud weapons whilst Carlos entered the building through a side door and planted your run of the mill TNT at strategic points in the building. The rest would be history.

They made it down the block easily, moving at a brisk jog until they came to a clump of bushes right before the entrance to the building. It was modern looking, roughly 5 stories high and as many wide. It was gray in color and not very pleasant to look at. "Ok. I'm going to wait here. You three move towards the building. The moment you see a cop or peacekeeper or anyone, shoot them. Then shoot whoever else shows up. I'll wait for 2 minutes after the first shot is fired and then make my way to the back door, then proceed to plant the explosives. Just keep them occupied. Are you ready my brothers? Good. Let's do this." He slapped each one of them on the back as they exited the concealment of the bush and moved up towards the building. It didn't take long for the rebellion in Erathore to claim their first kill as a night watchman rounded the corner of the government building. It didn't take long for him to see the 3 men with guns and for him to start to yell a warning. It didn't take long for the 7.62x39mm round from the Model 90 to exit the barrel and travel at over 2,000ft a second towards the watchman.
It didn't take long for the bullet to hit the watchman in the right eye and travel through his brain and exit through the back of his head. It didn't take long for the hydrostatic pressure to liquefy the watchman's eye and brain before sending a mixture of crimson blood and gray brain matter through the gaping hole in his skull and splatter on the face and body of his partner who stood transfixed with shock before a hail of bullets cut through him, tearing muscle mass, pulverizing bones, and exploding his internal organs. It didn't take long for either of them to die and when they did, the wall behind them was no longer gray. A mixture of crimson blood and grayish brain matter now adorned it.

The game was on thought Carlos Woods to himself as he silently started counting to 120. One one thousand… he heard the boom of the shotgun rip through the night before being answered by the pop of pistol fire…89 one thousand…the clatter of the assault rifle rang out, accompanied by men screaming and calling for their mother, maker, saint, anyone and anything. 120 one thousand…the distinctive noise of the EMI 2010 pistol called out several times in rapid succession. It was a beautiful symphony of blood, gore, and death. It was also time for Carlos to move.

He sprang up and started sprinting. He knew what he had to do. He knew where to place the charges. It was all up to him.

"…have confirmed reports that the Arro Police Headquarters was indeed destroyed last night. A spokesperson for the police stated that a group of over 70 armed men attacked the building with military grade weaponry and explosives. They managed to kill 247 unarmed officers, 37 off duty peacekeepers, and 132 civilians before destroying the building. In total all 70+ assailants were killed along with 562 government agents and 178 civilians. In response to this attack, King Lorenzo has instituted a country wide curfew of 10pm. More details to come…"

Sportgirls National Football Team

Manager: Patty Heatherly Cook (The Babbage Islands)

17: Samantha Barnes, 19, D, Armoury
18: Diane Clayton, 23, D, North Ward

None of this generation of Sportgirls are capped.

General observations: New manager Patty Heatherly Cook was a distinguished winger for Bloomfield National and The Babbage Islands, winning 84 caps and scoring 33 international goals. Together with fellow winger (and later husband) Orson Cook and Hall of Fame attacking midfielder Tegan Nash, Patty was instrumental in the switch from classic 4-4-2 to the revolutionary 4-6-0 formation that became the Bumblebees' signature. Although this young, relatively untested squad will stick to a more traditional scheme, Patty is expected to instill a love for the attack. With Greenfield MVP Chloe Phillips on one wing, charismatic leadership from veteran midfielder Bailey Lawrence, and Bridgeview's schoolgirl sensation Madeline Morris at nine-and-a-half, these Sportgirls are ready to provide some exciting football.

The Kagdazka and Pazhujebu Football Association (KPFA) is proud to present the Federation national team that will play in AOCAF XXXI, managed by the notorious witch Baba Yaga and captained by goalkeeper Zubeida Ichuvihaja. A few major changes can be seen from the Federation's most recent squad. Starting striker Zlatko Zedafski has retired from both club and international football, allowing room for a new face to come in up front for the Urchins. Former starters Vsevolod Ogorodov and Yuzhissa Aghimaqaj have been left out of the team entirely, the former due to poor club form and the latter due to a lack of confidence possibly stemming from his disastrous sending-off in the World Cup 55 group stage.

New faces include new starting defensive midfielder Odšahe Yakoko, better known as the engine behind the consecutive league triumphs of his club (Zhevassi), one third of FKM's spectacular attacking unit in Oleg Rostov, and two up-and-coming youngsters each from Zhevassi and Juvapanam in Udachin, Ghedafghupa, Dhivadha, and Gašughumi. Players returning to the team after time away are new starting left midfielder Yegor Zbruyev, fresh off of a championship year with Ojedo Cerro in the Liga Aguazuleña, as well as Krevetka's Demyan Ilych, Tout-Puissant Outremont's Aquillius Razava, Vulkan's Peregrina Thašighi, and Grêmio Lux's Bolov Narozhylenko.

Uniforms

There are not proper "home" or "away" strips for the Federation national team. The wisteria and green colors are worn when the team plays in Kagdazka, and the purple and black colors are worn when the team plays in Pazhujebu. For away matches, or for neutral venue tournaments like the AOCAF, the team alternates between the two uniforms. These kits were created by Cotdelapoms.

Out of Character Stuff

1. Read this. I've worked hard on it and mostly kept it well maintained. I'm delighted when I can tell that someone actually takes five minutes to do some research. I'm not so delighted when I hear made-up demonyms like 'Kagdazkan' or 'Pazhujebuan.' Which brings me to...

2. The proper demonym for a person or thing from Kagdazka is 'Kagdaz.' The proper demonym for a person or thing from Pazhujebu is 'Pazhujebi.' The two countries are VERY separate, connected only politically, NOT culturally and CERTAINLY not geographically.

3. With those two things said, as long as you don't kill anyone, RP permissions should all be considered set to 'yes.' My RPing may be quite low during this tournament, being preoccupied as I am with Baptism of Fire hosting duties, so go nuts.

Tiago Mendez---Age: 54---Occupation: Customer Service Representative
1907hrs---28th June, 2011
Eliodoro, Itazan, Erathore (89,873,631 pop)----Ally way of 32nd and State
Locations of Importance Nearby: Erathore Capital Building---1st and Country

Laughter rang out in the alley way. His friend had just told a joke. And it was funny. Hence the laughter. Tiago Mendez took a drink of beer. It bubbled in his mouth, popping and fizzing as new bubbles came and old bubbles popped. He had been out drinking with a few buddies, two to be precise. It had been two days since the destruction of the governmental building in Arro and the general feeling was good riddance. It had also been two days since the government crackdown in form of a 9pm curfew and the general feeling about that was that the government could go fuck themselves. Still, not very many people were out past 9 and with good reason. Twice as many police officers, twice as many peacekeepers, four times as much brutality. There were a few horror stories of officers beating the living crap out of someone then just leaving. However Mendez and mostly everyone else brushed them aside and adopted a 'even if it is true, how could it happen to me?' mentality. This would lead to his death tonight.

Anyhow, back to the account of Mr. Mendez & Co. They had been drinking and impressive amount and had lost all track of time. And most likely location as they were stumbling around an alleyway trying to get home. The more important thing for them in their current state of mind was trying to get home. The thing they should've tried to pay attention to was the time. It was 9:07pm. 7 minutes after curfew. 7 minutes after the police had free reign to do what they wanted to anyone out on the streets. And they were out in force. Several officers were near Tiago and his friends. He didn't know that they were there. They didn't know he was there. Until one of his friends suddenly had to vomit and chose a garbage can to use. In a moment of desperation he picked up the tin lid and threw it to the ground before heaving into the can. The lid smashed into the ground with a loud crashing noise that alerted 2 police officers who went to investigate.

"Police nobody move! Put your hands up!" Shouted the officers with their guns drawn. Tiago and crew reacted with laughter.
"Come on. We're just a bunch of friends," excepted slightly more slurred and hard to understand. "Hands up NOW!" Shouted the police officer. He didn't want to deal with these drunk people. He would rather be at home, at the bar, anywhere really. But something about this job, the power it gave him, was intoxicating. It created a river that he was powerless to swim against. Tiago Mendez and his friends did as they were asked and the two police officers got their hand cuffs out and approached them Just as they were about to handcuff them, Tiago turned around and patted the police officer on the shoulder, most likely something that his drunk brain thought was a good idea.

It wasn't.

"Sgt. Alexson Kadu, Officer ID#9027, recording video log #3461. At roughly 9:10pm last night, my partner and I encountered a group of 3 drunk individuals who were out past the mandatory governmental curfew. We approached the men calmly with our guns holstered. We asked them how they were and what they were up to. Suspects replied with a sentence or two containing several expletives revolving around the police. It was now that my partner and I asked the men to come with us for questioning. The suspects walked towards us then proceeded to jump at us. My partner and I pulled our guns and fired our guns at the suspects. When it was safe to do so we checked them for a pulse. We couldn't find a pulse and when an EMT showed up he declared them dead………"

Regards: 3 men shot and killed by police

'Just gonna got down some quick notes here. The men killed were Tiago Mendez, 54 years old, Hemersfield Shenson, 49 years old, and Ingat Olson, 56 years old. Detected a .11 BAL in them. Removed 16 bullets from Olson, 11 from Shenson, and 23 from Mendez. Several of these were pulled from the back of the skull. I also found burn marks surrounding those bullet holes, signifying that they were shot point blank.

Ok maybe he was excited to play in the AOCAF despite not particularly liking the circumstances regarding Erathore's application and acceptance. Maybe it was the fact that the group he and Erathore had been drawn into was the thing that rekindled Alexio Del Nieran's interest in playing for Erathore for the time being.

The hosts Delaclava, Osarius, Sportgirls, the recent champions and tied for second most wins Pacitalia…and then the bid daddy. Starblaydia. 6 time winners of the AOCAF and 5 time World Cup winners. Despite not being ranked number 1 in the world anymore, they are the team who everyone wants to play. To win or lose it doesn't matter.

"Starblaydia," Del Nieran said to himself. Even the name itself was something of elegance, of power, of sheer beauty. Erathore had only met Starblaydia once on the battlefield known as the pitch and it was in a Di Bradini Cup game. That was Erathore's first U-21 international game and it was debatable on if it was Erathore's first every international game period. The game ended in a 2-2 draw and Erathore would go on to be knocked out of the tourney in the Round of 16. An interesting fact was that in the 3 Di Bradini Cups the Erathore U-21s had entered, they had been knocked out in the Ro16 in each one.

Erathore's first game was against Delaclava in two days time. Plenty of time to relax. And feel insecure. Alexio Del Nieran felt insecure. He never felt that way. He was one of the better footballers in the world, having recently won Dunboor State and Emperor's Cup with Dunboor FC in Cafundéu. So why was he feeling so insecure? Because of the current political and overall state of Erathore. Protests, riots, dead civilians and dead government agents, it was hitting the fan. And all of this in about a month. It wasn't just about football anymore. It was about the population rising up against strict government oppression for several decades. If he wasn't a footballer, Del Nieran would most likely be out there fighting against the government like so many others were.

He let his mind wander to a few other things before eventually rolling over and falling asleep. The last thing that went through his mind was something to do with the nations in his AOCAF group and the phrase, 'the bigger they are, the harder they fall'

Assistant Manager

Keeper

1 GK Mariaddren Undodhen, Telecontarë (Starblaydia) ~
Age - 809
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 174 lbs
Undodhen has proved to be a steady and reliable keeper for the national team, though prone to the occasional howler. It is likely this proneness that has kept Undodhen from moving to a larger squad either domestically or abroad and could be a reason for Dart to finally get his chance between the woodwork.

Defenders

17 Hanutaut Lilithian, Soldarian FC
Age - 606
Sex - F
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 154 lbs
Agile and a superb little bit of tackling skill are her best attributes and she uses them well to confound attacking players into making plays that they would rather not.

12 Dwier Titenburg Jr, Royal Khaldoon (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)
Age - 421
Sex - M
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 162 lbs
Titenburg continues to tow the backline with the grit and skill needed to stifle even the most powerful of attacks on a game to game basis. He has far surpassed his father's shadow when it comes to football and will likely not be forgotten any time soon.

9 Thankanion Elenelwa, Mar Sara FC
Age - 604
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 180 lbs
A strong and physical presence that will put some bite into the backline alongside Titenburg.

Midfield

24 Espy va Drake, Telecontarë (Starblaydia)
Age: 721
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 159 lbs
After becoming a folklore hero for the lower class of the world, va Drake has made himself one of the living legends of the game after help leading the side to a title in World Cup 53. He has traveled far and wide while plying his trade, donning kits for no less than four countries clubs, and finally returned him when he signed with United before last season. Seen as the driving force in the middle of the park alongside Hawk, it is up to the opposition to try and figure out how to deal with the brilliance the winger and his other attackers have rather than them to create magic.

21 Aintôrthea Durosa, Cafundó do Juta (Cafundeu)
Age - 730
Sex - F
Height: 5"10"
Weight: 144 lbs
Durosa is one of those players that can play just about any position, as her skill set is vast and adequate in multiple areas. She has done exceptionally well in her CMSC seasons, nabbing goals and assists with regularity and has continued with her transfer to the Cafundeu league. Her good knowledge of va Drake's typical playing patterns has made the two to be a devastating pair for the opposition to contain.

14 Laborious Hawk, Petardos S/A (Cafundeu)
Age - 685
Sex -M
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 213 lbs
Words do not even began to define his talent, his talent defines words. He was awarded one of the spots that the Vanorians have in the World Cup Hall of Fame, with it being very well deserved, as he has and continues to earn everything he has been given every single day.

8 Morronuth Neltanta, Wexax United ~
Age - 716
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 164 lbs
A strong and physical player who uses his body well when shielding off opposing players off the ball. Lacks the pace of some of the squad but is great at keeping possession and finding an outlet pass.

28 Faeron Soldarian, Raynor City United
Age - 599
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 163 lbs
Soldarian continues to live in the shadow of more well known players both on the national team and with his club. Despite this, Soldarian is seen by all on the squad as the emotional leader and the linchpin the in the middle that allows the more attacking minded midfielders being allowed to play their game.

Strikers

6 Allandren Fresco, Petardos S/A (Cafundeu)
Age - 474
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 167 lbs
Fresco has proved once again that he is suited for any role that his managers wish to give him, easily adjusting to Hearts style of play and learning his preferred moves. A great shot and football IQ make him a very dangerous attacker for the Marauders.

11 Lucas Hearts, Hondo FC
Age - 858
Sex - M
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 153 lbs
Hearts is an out and out goalscorer who has a nose for the goal and a talent for getting open even in a crowded box. His skills work quite well with the skill set of Fresco, and it produces a lethal one two strike force that will put fear into the hearts of those teams that must face a proud Marauders squad.

When Erathore and the rest of the world looked back on this moment they would view it as the event that sparked the rebellion. It was supposed to be a peaceful rally with the people using their voice as a weapon. Singing songs calling for reform, calling for an end to the actions of King Lorenzo and his government. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. Like at all rallies and protests, there were government peacekeepers on hand to keep the crowd in control.

Despite the peaceful intentions of the majority of the crowd, there were still some people who had more violent intentions in mind. Yelling at the peacekeepers, throwing things at them, then finally swinging punches before being tazed and arrested. No body got too hurt. And it was better that way. Better for everyone. But all it takes is one person to ruin everything. Throughout history it has generally been the strongest or smartest or most charismatic figure that has drawn others to his side and have them do what he wants. That was the case at the rally. A charismatic business man whose name was Artur Brais starting speaking to the crowd. Talking about how free they could be if they choose to break free from the government oppression. Not many people listened to him at first. Then one did, then another, then three more, then ten more, more and more and more people started listening to him. Listening to his message of how obtainable freedom was if they just fought back. Soon even the most peaceful man felt the stirrings of rage within him. Rage at being treated unfairly. Rage at the government only caring about money. Just rage in general. But they didn't know what to do with their rage. So they just started yelling. A couple fights broke out to which Brais said, "Stop. Stop! Why do we fight amongst ourselves when it is the government who we should be fighting?" And with that he turned to face the peacekeepers. "They are the ones to blame," he said quite dramatically pointing his finger at them and making himself as tall as he could. It was quite cheesy looking back on it but at the time it worked. The crowd rushed at the peacekeepers yelling and screaming, throwing rocks and glass bottles. It was quite the scene. The peacekeepers didn't react as the protesters crashed into their shields. They waited a second before pushing them back and dropping to one knee to allow the row of peacekeepers behind them a clean line of fire. This wasn't surprising. Rioters and protesters were shot at with guns all the time. Granted they only shot rubber bullets but still. Unfortunately these were not rubber bullets. They were the real thing.

"Government officials confirmed the death of 327 protesters and 137 in serious condition at their hands. They also stated the the protesters were armed with guns and shooting at their soldiers, who fired back…"

Sorthern Northland national football team
Image

Formation is 4-4-2 with a style modifier of +3.

Number, name, age, position (n/a for goalies and forwards), club (club's country in brackets, if not a Sorthern club)

Goalkeepers:

1: Yasser El-Borolossy, 28 y/o, 17th of October
13: Cathal Ó Sicín, 29 y/o, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh
23: Stephen Nightingale, 24 y/o, Atletik Thessia (Mytannion)

It's said that you have to be a bit mad to be a goalkeeper and Sorthern keepers arguably are. El-Borolossy is known to celebrate goals by jumping around on the crossbar, whilst Ó Sicín's call up is a remarkable rise to fame with him having been spotted by Baile an Fheirtearaigh whilst playing park football just under a year ago. A former poultry farmer he likes to keep a chicken in his goal. For luck he claims. Nightingale meanwhile is fairly sane. Having previously been a club mate of El-Borolossy at 17th of October where he was rated as one of the best in the land for sitting on the bench and looking bored, he is well suited to being a third choice keeper. Even if moving to Atletik Thessia has given him ideas about actually playing.

Defenders:

2: Grace Tyler, 21 y/o, right back, Beningrad
12: Rachel Campbell, 23, right back, Areck Furness
3: Hafdís Valbergsdóttir, 29 y/o, left back, Snowspire Communal
22: Paddy O'Mahony, 20 y/o, left back, Royal Khaldoon (Queer Poco el Mono Ara)

The two starting full backs couldn't be more contrasting. Whilst Tyler, having learnt her trade at Beningrad from former international Laura 'not just in the squad 'cos I'm the daughter of the founding ex-leader of the nation' O'Bagels, has gone into the the national XI almost as soon as she's established herself at club level, Valbergsdóttir has had to be more patient, but has an extra level of maturity about her in having had to wait for her place at the top level longer. Campbell meanwhile gets her place after vastly impressing for club over a couple of seasons, whilst O'Mahoney is certainly one for the future.

5: Saif Al-Mukbari, 32 y/o, centre-back, East Reading
6: Michael Beck, 31 y/o, centre-back, Castrograd
15: Didier Lacasse, 29 y/o, CF Septentrionien
16: David Black, 29 y/o, centre-back, Petardos S/A (Cafundéu)

With both the first choice defenders over thirty, and the reserves rapidly approaching that landmark the Sorthern defence isn't the fastest in the game. What it does have though is a fantastic reading of the game. Some younger more athletic blood could probably be useful and one is left to wonder whether the writing just may be on the wall for these four, particularly with Al-Mukbari and Beck being linked with moves away from their respective clubs.

Midfielders:

7: Saiorse Ní Fhionnagáin, 20 y/o, right winger, Corcaigh
21: Tadhg Ó Lorcáin, 29 y/o, right winger, Ranca Toco (Cafundéu)
11: Baral Qaavigaaq, 32 y/o, left winger, Juvapanam (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
17: Fearne Gibson, 24 y/o, left winger, Windlesham Town

Ó Lorcáin and Qaavigaag, the later revitalised by moving to foreign lands, remain as a potent point of attack on the wings. Despite having had two years to establish herself for club, Gibson is still mainly a player brought on from the bench for impact and looks unlikely to do anything more internationally. Whilst Ó Lorcáin remains a potent force it seems he'll have to settle for a place on the becnh with Ní Fhionnagáin looking set to be given the nod. It was in the AOCAF Cup that Siobhan Ní hÓgáin made her breakthrough in international football which proved to be the start of Sorthern Northland fielding a mixed sex team. With Ní Fhionnagáin being a protégée of Ní hÓgáin she will be looking to make a similar impact.

4: Arnold Tnetennba (vice-captain), 28 y/o, central midfielder, Juvapanam (Kagdazka and Pazhujebu)
8: Aisling Ní Cheallaigh, 30 y/o, central midfielder, Rio Bonito (Cafundéu)
18: Alejandro Carmona, 23 y/o, central midfielder, Castrograd
14: Jean-Pierre Gagnon, 25 y/o, central midfielder, Parr City (Mytannion)

A second mover to Kagdazka and Pazhujebu (well one of those at any rate) Tnetennba has fully matured into being worthy of being a mainstay in the national team since his move abroad. Also moving on up from reserve to first choice is Ní Cheallaigh, who having spent years being talked about the bestest playermaker ever in Sorthern Northland, once she gets a chance, now has that exact chance. It's just a shame that at twenty-nine at the time of the World Cup she may only get one more chance to prove so. Still Carmona and Gagnon are both players more suited to the box-to-box role taken up by Tnetennba, so at least she shouldn't be usurped by anyone.

Forwards:

9: Eulàlia Marxuach (captain), 32 y/o, Beningrad
10: Clive Costly, 19, Snowspire Communal
19: Joana Crescas, 26 y/o, Castrograd
20: Joaquim Crescas, 29 y/o, Castrograd

Marxuach have both proved to be lethal at club level, whilst questions had previously been asked about Marxuach at the top end of international football, her performances in captaining Sorthern Northland to the World Cup 55 title have gone a long way to quietening her critics. The early end to Dermot Wolfetone's career due to illness has been a bitter blow for Sorthern Northland. Having played just one season of professional football, Clive Costly looks to be Wolfetone's replacement, partly on the basis of having a rather good season for Snowspire, eighteen goals in a début season is no mean feat, and partly as part of a government campaign for there to be more people called Clive in football. The Crescas siblings make up the back up and though they've proven to be reasonably dependable for Castrograd neither of them is particularly prolific.

1-11 will be the starting line-up.

Starting Line-Up
[ 4-2-3-1 ]

S. Robinson
Jenkins, Monte, Harris, Reade
Walsh, Orlova
Roberts, A. di Corradi (c), Ibrahim
M. di Corradi

Alain Montblanc will retain his stewardship of the side, and hopes to see his team do reasonably well in spite of the quality of opposition they are to face. The team's style will be the usual Montblanc possession game (modifier +1.5) which relies heavily on midfield dominance, much like the senior squad. The main difference being that the Flying Sparks -- as the under 21s are affectionately known -- tend to play more cautiously, and the influence of both Donovan MacLean and Elissa Barca-Carthy (more defensive minded coaches than Firebirds gaffer, Benedict di Corradi) is certainly noticeable.

With the removal of Jayson Dhanda from the squad, the captain's armband passes to Alessandro di Corradi, who will be expected to drift between the opposition's lines in his free role, popping up wherever he can do the most damage. His sister, Maria, will also start, as the team's lone striker. Playing just off her, to the left, is Romario Roberts. Though Roberts is a striker by trade, he has played several times in wide areas for Greeningham -- understandable, given the competition he would face for a striking role -- and looks comfortable. This move sees Carmelo Reyes unfortunately relegated to the bench, while Hamzah Ibrahim retains the right wing berth. It is also worth noting that Roberts is the only player in the squad over the age of 21. This is apparently due to Benedict di Corradi's request, suggesting he has high hopes for the Greeningham City wonderkid. It might also be to accomodate the di Corradi siblings, whose partnership looked promising at times last summer.

Behind them in midfield, acting as holding midfielder/playmaker and support player respectively, are Elena Orlova and Maryann Walsh. The two have limited experience together, having only shared pitch time sparingly. However, they have developed an understanding quickly in training. Interestingly enough, their backups -- Serenity Lewis and Reinaldo Gonzalez -- share a similar level of understanding, having come through the Firewood City Academy together. Lewis and Gonzalez are a more attack-minded, dynamic duo, though, which isn't really to Montblanc's preferences for the most part.

Defensively, Habib Kouli takes on the starting berth at right back, with Bowsston United's Gillian Reade stepping in as backup. The rest of the defence remains the same as it was in the DBC. The only change is that Montblanc now favours starting Michael Harris alongside Claudio Monte, instead of Micah Robinson. Robinson's pace will be useful later in games, as will his aerial dominance. However, in the DBC he was guilty of some shocking lapses in concentration, which may have hindered his chances somewhat.

Bluth Corporation midfielder Basil Hallward as a reputation as a skilled tailor, and he was in the midst of making a superb new uniform for fellow midfielder Dario Grey when forward Henry Wotton got it in his head to pay him a visit. "Hello, Henry," said Hallward. "Not to be rude, but as you can see I'm busy with our new teammate here...I'd love to chat, but now's not really the time."

"Oh, come now, Basil. You may be busy but I'm sure ol' Dario here wouldn't object to a bit of chit-chat while you're measuring him inside and out, would you, Dario?" retorted the ever-gregarious Wotton.

Grey nodded and tried to say, "As a matter of fact I wouldn't," but before he could finish Hallward interrupted him. "I...I don't want you corrupting him. You have your thoughts and that's fine, but Dario here is a perfect specimen of a soccer player, an absolute beauty, and I really don't want him to be spoiled by you."

"Balderdash!" snorted Wotton. "I'm sure Dario here has a fine mind of his own and can decide on these things for himself. But you're right, Basil, he does have the ideal body type." Turning to Grey, Wotton continued: "You know, Dario, I've long said that keeping your body intact and healthy is the most important thing. I mean, I love soccer but it's just a game! No sense in sacrificing your body for that. No, no, no, my boy, I daresay that you shouldn't do anything that risks you getting hurt. You really are a museum piece, a prototype for Blutharian soccer players from now until eternity, and it's my opinion that you shouldn't do anything to jeopardize that."

"Henry, please..." groaned Hallward. But Grey was intrigued by this way of thinking. "Go on, go on, Mr. Wotton. I'm quite intrigued, I do say. But don't I have an obligation to my teammates--I mean, what happens if I just let something go on by when I could have set up a score or prevented one on us? What'll happen then? Won't I risk getting cut?"

"Hogwash!" laughed Wotton, who was fond of multi-syllabic exclamations ending with the "sh" diphthong. "After all, my dear boy, a physical specimen of your quality doesn't come along every day--everyone'll instantly put the blame on some other guy because such a perfect athlete like yourself would be too talented to make such a mistake. Worry about yourself and your own health, let others worry about theirs."

"That's true," murmured Grey, "I hadn't thought of it that way." As he finished the sentence, Hallward was putting his measuring tape away and making some final notes. Seeing this, Wotton excused himself and left: "It's been quite sensational chatting with you, my dear Dario...quite sensational, and I hope to have another opportunity." Once Wotton was out the door, Hallward began: "He's quite a charming fellow, he is, and well-meaning too, but he also corrupts everything he comes near. I really do wish he hasn't influenced you too terribly. Please don't allow yourself to be taken in by him." Grey, however, was in a daze..."I don't know, Basil...I really don't know."

Several days later, Hallward visited Grey to deliver the uniform he had sewed. It really was a masterpiece: shorts with the seams and hems so well-hidden that there was no distortion, and the shirt wrapped perfectly around his neck and upper arm. "I hope to see you wearing it our first game," said Hallward as Grey came out to model it for him. "I'm quite pleased with what I've done, and nothing would please me more than to see it in action." Grey, however, was still obsessed by Wotton's remarks from a week earlier and barely heard Hallward, murmuring a plain assent that just as easily could have been to a multi-million dollar business deal as to a single pen. But after Hallward had left, Grey removed the uniform and packed it carefully in his suitcase for the plane ride to Delaclava two days later. Admiring its beauty, a perfect sheath for an athletic ideal such as himself, he pondered the possibility of injury. "Oh, how I wish this uniform could take the damage instead of my body," he sighed as he fastened the suitcase's latches.

A Preoccupation with Domination
Roshanak looks to extend trophy cabinet

Starblaydia Coach

67 Caps, 16 Goals
An action-packed score draw with the reigning and four-time regional champions was just the sort of result that Starblaydi fans were looking for. Though kicking off a tournament with a draw isn't quite what the six-time regional champions were after, based on their recent results this was definitely a step in the right direction for new coach Isabella Roshanak in her first outing with the senior side.

Coming off the back of last year's* third place in the Di Bradini Cup, Starblaydi football is on the rise since its Last Sixteen elimination from World Cup 55 at the hands of Aguazul. Led by a resurgence of patriotic pride in the national team, Starblaydia now demands, nay expects, trophies from their boys, girls and elves in white.

Though the stand-out result of this first Matchday was probably the host's demolishing of newcomers Erathore (where are they on the map, again?), it's not really a huge shock as the most famous footballer in Erathore is a Starblaydi legend out of retirement. 5-2, however, is nothing to be sniffed at, especially if it serves to really get the Delaclav people behind their team and generate interest for this AOCAF Cup.

Starblaydia's interest, after holding their recent AOCAF Cup nemesis Pacitalia to a draw for the first time in years, has certainly been boosted. With over 160 years and eighteen tournament trophies since the national team's inception, still nothing shines as quite as good as the glint of gold for a Starblaydi football fan.

La Furia Azule fall 5-2 to to Delaclava

Alexio Del Nieran watches hopelessly as Deleclava score their 5th goal

We kinda expected it. Granted we didn't expect to lose by so much but still, we expected it. The game got off to a good start, with the elf Erurcion Naryaiel scoring a beautiful curled shot in the 21st minute. Then the hosts of the tournament quickly scored three goals, one of a wonderful header, the second on a point-blank shot, and the third on a long range attempt that hit the back of one of the Deleclava players backs to give it intense top spin. Going into half time, the score was 3-1. Deleclava was quick to score again after halftime, chipping the ball neatly over Bennedetto as he challenged. The defensive line fell to pieces after that and Deleclava scored again in the 75th minute. Their player more or less strolled through our defense and tapped it in. It was sad. Thankfully Erathore managed to put one last goal in the net in the 89th minute when Alexio Del Nieran scored on a beautiful 33 yard goal by just sending a rocket into the upper right corner of the net.

All in all a complete catastrophe…

Northern Switizin-Fangson Desert

"Out of ammo! Need a clip here!," shouted Roi Xesús Abreu. He was a good shot, better then most in his small rebel group, and was careful to not go full auto, but when you didn't start out with much ammo in the first place it can be quite hard to make it last. They were down to no more then 3 clips a piece. Xesús only had started this firefight with one clip, and now 6 minutes later he as out. One of his men threw him a clip. Xesús looked at the man and nodded his appreciation. He felt a surge of relief as he slammed the clip home and chambered a round. He popped up his head quickly to see where the Erathi soldiers were. A bullet zinging off the rock infront of him forced him to crouch back down but also told him where the soldier was. He waited a second before looking over the rock again and aiming down his sights where the soldier should be. Sure enough he popped up and fired at a rebel. He carefully squeezed off a single round and took satisfaction in seeing it impact in the soldiers left temple. A quarter of a second later he dropped to the ground. Xesús dropped back down into cover and looked back at the road where the rebels had come from. A flatbed truck was parked there with a steel turret housing a machine gun the group had managed to steal. It was a shame they didn't have any ammo for it or else it would be a huge advantage. He fired off another round and missed. That same soldier proceeded to fire his own gun and hit the rebel who had thrown his clip to Xesús in the throat. Xesús looked on in shock as the rebel started bleeding. It must have missed the jugular as blood wasn't gushing everywhere but a fair amount of blood was spilling out. Xesús got up and moved back towards the truck.

"Afonoso, Rocha, Xabier, Brexio's been hit. We need to go now! Grab Brexio and get in the truck! Let's Go!!" he shouted. The three didn't hesitate to comply with his orders The crouched down and sprinted to Brexio and grabbed his arms and started pulling him back as Xesús and Xabier provided covering fire. Several puffs of dirt near their feet showed that the enemy was zeroing in them. That meant it was time to go. Brexio was laid out in the back seat with Afonoso fitting his rifle through the machine gun slot on the steel turret. Rocha was already in the truck, sitting next to Brexio and holding his head in his lap and applying pressure and bandages to his wound. Xabier jumped into the passenger seat and pulled out his pistol and started firing as Xesús got in the drivers seat, turned the car on and threw it into gear before speeding off. It had been a close one. Brexio would live. But it had reminded them that they needed to be more cautious. You couldn't fight the military in a relatively open space.

Postby Bluth Corporation » Fri Jul 01, 2011 5:07 pm

Throughout the build-up to Bluth Corporation's opening game against Cafundeu, Dario Grey had heard rumors of teammate Cyril Vane's skill at free kicks. The rumors were quite well-founded: in pickup and amateur games before joining the national team, Vane was stellar, either scoring or setting up a score within thirty seconds on nearly seven out of every ten attempts taken from his opponent's side of the field. But he was also a bit standoffish and reclusive: he had few close friends on his teams, and his brother (and national team teammate) often remarked that Cyril used his kicking skill to make him wanted when he certainly wouldn't be wanted for his personality. Yet in Dario's mind such impressive artistry more than made up for Vane's social deficiencies, and when the team first got together right before departing for Cafundeu he warmed to the forward.

By the time the game came, Cyril and Dario had become close friends--seatmates on the plane, roommates in the hotel, and tablemates at team meals. For Cyril it was all new and exciting: never before had he enjoyed such a close relationship with a teammate, and for the first time in years he felt as though someone outside of his family truly valued him as a person rather than as a ball-kicker. Indeed, Dario's affection was for Cyril's person; but it was rooted in Cyril's own immaculate physical skills, such that in Dario's mind the physical gifts necessarily determined the person. As game day approached, Dario became more and more eager to finally see Cyril in action.

The game against Cafundeu was an uneventful and, surprisingly for a newcomer facing the second-ranked team in the region, closely-matched one. Jeremiah Johnson scored for Bluth Corporation with 22:18 remaining in the first half, and Cafundeu tied the score with 17:49 left to go in the second half. As the game wound down, the crowd got on edge as even the Blutharian fans realized that at this point in the tournament no attempt would be made to resolve a tie after regulation, whether through overtime or penalty kicks. Even with just a tie Bluth Corporation would have made a statement, but a ragtag bunch winning their first international game against a regional power would have been a monumental upset, and the Blutharians were desperate for just one more point. With just over a minute left in the game, it looked as though Bluth Corporation might have its chance as Cyril Vane was tripped up by a Cafundeu defender. Vane was awarded a free kick, and as close to the goal as it was it seemed certain that he would score, giving Bluth Corporation a late lead.

With everything set up, the referee blew his whistle. Vane approached the ball, intending to bounce it inside the left goalpost and into the goal. A sure thing, he thought, I've made so many kicks just like this before. But on the last step before the kick, his ankle just perceptibly rolled to the inside, throwing off his aim by the slightest fraction of a degree. The ball nevertheless looked good, until everyone in the stadium saw it clank harmlessly off the outside of the goalpost. Dario Grey was in position to redirect the ball back towards the goal, or at least to the waiting feet of Oscar Wilde, but as he moved to do it he realized he would have to go to the ground to make the kick before a Cafundeu player got to the ball first--a sure recipe for a pulled groin. Opting to preserve his physical perfection, Grey pulled up and Cafundeu kicked it clear down the field.

Vane should have been frustrated but was not; meanwhile, Grey felt sick inside. He knew he could no longer associate with Cyril. The immaculate gift had been sullied, and Vane no longer seemed the epitome of physical perfection Grey had perceived until then. As the team walked off the field after the game, Grey came up to Vane. Expecting that Dario would be trying to offer consolation, Cyril tried to stop him: "Dario, Dario, you know, I'm not the least bit bothered by it. I mean, all my life I've found acceptance through my ability to kick a ball, but now that I've found the joy and beauty of true acceptance, for me as I am rather than for my skills, I don't need those skills anymore."

Grey's response, however, was anything but warm: "I came to you because I saw you as an ideal of perfection in physical abilities, much as myself. But now that that perfection is not there, you're worth nothing to me. I no longer have any desire to spend time with you. Good-bye, Cyril."

Back in his hotel, Grey was in his room's closet setting out his clothes for his upcoming day off. Without meaning to, he caught a glimpse of the new uniform Hallward had tailor-made for him, on a hanger towards one end of the clothes rack. Despite it not having yet been worn, Grey couldn't help but notice a massive stain, almost like coffee (Grey didn't drink coffee) on the uniform shirt. Grey was shocked, and stopped poking through his closet as he tried to contemplate the mystery. He racked his memory, trying to figure out what he possibly could have done with the shirt to cause it to be stained in this way, but could come up with nothing. But after a bit, he shuddered as he suddenly remembered--it was barely there in his mind at first--the silent hope and prayer he had made that this uniform, and not his body, take any damage over the course of the tournament. Could it be true? It seemed unlikely, but while he relished in his still-immaculate body there was, in the smallest corner of his mind, the nagging knowledge that his body had only been preserved by his refusal to sacrifice it for his team, that the blame for the failure to seal the win that should have fallen on him for his selfish play had instead been redirected to Cyril, and that his rejection of Cyril was unjustifiable--and that despite all that, he was doing fine and his new uniform was not. Unlikely and incredible though it may be, Dario could only conclude that his uniform was indeed showing the stains of his own sins.

The next morning, the team held a brief meeting before the players went their separate ways to enjoy their day off. The first item on the agenda was an announcement that Cyril Vane had blown out his knee exercising on the treadmill the night after the game. He would not be with the team for the remaining duration of the tournament.

Demi scores a pair but Foxes settle for draw with Starblaydia
Opening match of AOCAF 31 mirrors Pacitalia's first-ever regional match

Alberto-Vicente Marro

Right midfielder Demi Santos scored a goal in each half for the Blue Foxes but his offensive contribution was not enough, as Pacitalia settled for a two-all draw with Starblaydia in the opening group-stage match at AOCAF Cup 31.

Demi's goals, in the 29th and 72nd minutes, brought his international career total to eight. Putting the Blue Foxes ahead only temporarily, both tallies were matched mere minutes later by deft strikes from Starblaydi forward Aidan Kuu (40th) and attacking midfielder Ázëwyn Fëanáro (79th).

Striker Ambrosino Giurimano was substituted after an hour's play for Adrian Manoliu. At the back end, Ami Bellagente came on in the 75th minute for Sergio San Cristobál after the starting left-central back earned a yellow card for tripping Kuu.

It was a fitting end to a match for two teams who are, on paper, still quite close in talent and skill. Arguably it will also be the toughest test for both sides before the knockouts, as they move on to face hosts Delaclava (ranked 31st), 15th-ranked Sportgirls, 16th seed Osarius and the unranked Erathore side.

History repeats itself

In Pacitalia's first-ever group stage match at the AOCAF Cup, the Blue Foxes fought hard for ninety minutes, earning a 2-2 draw against the then-four-time champions and top-ranked Starblaydia.

It was a match that many see as defining Pacitalia's entry into, and success at, the regional championship. Pacitalia might have been a newcomer then; the side's talent, however, was on full display.

Fast forward to Pacitalia's 20th consecutive appearance at the AOCAF Cup and it's clear the tables have turned a bit. There's a new class of titans at the top — along with the Blue Foxes, teams like Sorthern Northland, Cafundéu and Krytenia are perennial contenders, and Sarzonia made its return to regional competition en route to an eventual second title at AOCAF Cup 29.

Starblaydia, on the other hand, is not as challenging an opponent as it once was. The nation hasn't captured the regional title in the last seven tournaments. They've come close, no doubt — losses in the final in AOCAF Cups 25 and 29. Another miss this year and they'll tie their last streak of eight straight appearances without silverware, when, after their fifth title at AOCAF Cup 14, they failed to win it again until AOCAF Cup 23.

But the Purple Peril have not returned to the championship after a break, they've been a participant all along. The interest level from the country's media and fans certainly has, however, returned to its former peak. The tables certainly turned in the history books as Starblaydia and Pacitalia faced off in the opening group-stage match at AOCAF Cup 31 (the third time the two rivals have met to start the tournament).

This time, the Foxes were the side coming in as four-time champions and the regional number-one. And the result was exactly the same as in Pacitalia's debut, sparking a new level of confidence in an underrated Starblaydi side that will certainly challenge Pacitalian hopes of an easy ride to the end of the group stage.
