I'm trying to get into the Free Masons, so that I can work my way up to Master Mason.

Once I get to Master Mason, I'll be eligible to join the Shriners.

Then I plan to go through the process to become a Shriner, and once I am a Shriner, I will receive a cool hat.

I'm fairly certain that you don't have to be a Master Mason to be a Shriner.

Master is only the third degree.
But yes you do.
After master you can go to the York Rite or the Scottish or in this case the Shriners. There are various other masonic bodies though.

My ex-husband was a member of DeMolay, a Mason's organization. His mother and sister were Eastern Star members, which a Mason's womens auxillary.
