In my area there's about 20 villages called "Novo selo", which literally translates as "New village". This has got to be the stupidest place name ever.

It's a pretty common practice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neapoli

I had a bit of a laugh about the 'siege of Kut' (WWI). 'Kut' is Dutch slang for 'vagina'.

There are towns all over Ireland whose name literally means "Big Town".

Kalaspia-Shimarata's flag represents the Union between K&S. The dark blue represents the sea and the light blue represents the sky. In Kalashi language considers light blue and dark blue to be different colours. England colonised, and unified K&S, between 1774 and 1953, and English, light blue and dark blue are considered to be the same colour. Therefore, the contrast between dark blue and light blue represents the union, but the differences between K&S where as blue being two but simultaneously one colour represents K&S being two, but simultaniously one entity. The opposite to the symmetry represents the unity and indipendance of K&S, whilst also representing the Kalashi culture of opposite symmetry.KS is 75% Christian, hence the cross.

The full name translates to:

The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one.

More of a story than a place name...

There's a desert lake in Pakistan called Hamun-i-Lora.
Hamun means lake. And Lora is Urdu slang for dick. So literally means Lake of the Dick.

It made us laugh like hell in Geography classes

Wilfred Test wrote:Here's why it's called Truth or Consequences:
Originally named Hot Springs, the city changed its name to Truth or Consequences, the title of a popular NBC radio program. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program from the first town that renamed itself after the show. Hot Springs won the honor. Edwards visited the town during the first weekend of May for the next fifty years. This event was called "Fiesta" and included a beauty contest, a parade, and a stage show. The city still celebrates Fiesta each year on the first weekend of May. The parade generally features area celebrities such as the New Mexico Chile Queen. Fiesta also features a dance in Ralph Edwards Park.

Hmmm... And that's according to the town's website. It seems the story I was told was an elaborate lie. According to the tale told by my mother's family, it was in the 30s, the entire town (small population at the time) appeared on a radio quiz program titled "Truth or Consequences". Based on the participants answers to the quiz they either got rewards for a correct answers (the truth) or had a penalty for incorrect ones (consequences). The town ended up answering the last question wrong, and the consequence was naming the town after the show. So much for old family stories!

And here's a good old fashioned Australian place name that I'd say now qualifies.

Anyway, what are some funny names you have come across?

Bald knob, WV, as well as Pinch (also in WV). But that's not my point. In German the past tense for essen (to eat) is aß. Now this may not look funny now, but when that weird letter is replaced by the English equivalent (two s), you get....well, yeah.

There are many villages with strange names in Poland. Examples:
Zimna Wódka (Cold Vodka)
Stary Łom (Old Crowbar)
Nałogi (Addictions)
Złe Mięso (Bad Meat)
Podła Góra (Vile Mountain)
Potworów (Monsterville)
Nowe Rumunki (New Romanian Women)
Szwaby (a derogatory name for Germans)
and, my favourite:
Mała Wieś przy Drodze (Small Village by the Road)
