HIA S-17 Anti-Personnel/Light Armor Vehicle

During the failed "rolling thunder" style of urban engagement that was found in the battle of Hamaii, Haruspex forces suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment. While the losses cannot be blamed on technology, it became clear that a dedicated anti-personnel fighting vehicle would provide valuable assistance in an urban environment.

The temporary solution in Beautancus were self-propelled anti-aircraft (AA) guns. However, these vehicles are neither armored nor as mobile as a main battle tank (MBT). Therefore it was envisioned that the new combat vehicle should be built on a tank chassis and offer the same or better protection as an MBT. The protection of the S-17 is superior to most MBTs, as active and passive protection is used, and additional armor (the vehicle lacks a manned turret), is distributed to the hull of the vehicle.

When used in urban terrain, the S-17 is employed on a 2 to 1 ratio, meaning two S-17's protecting one MBT. In rural operations that ratio is reversed, i.e. one S-17 protecting two MBTs. This results from the complexity of fighting in urban terrain and the need for a versatile anti-personnel machine that can engage multiple targets at once and on different height levels. The introduction of such a vehicle makes urban fighting less stressful on tanks and can relieve them of some of the workload so that they can concentrate on their main objective of engaging other tanks and hardened targets.

The S-17 is based on the chassis of the well-known S-80U MBT which was used in large numbers by the Haruspex Legionary and has been manufactured under license by many other countries. The rear of the driver's compartment, at the front of the vehicle, has been raised, providing greater internal volume. A new mount is equipped with two OWS-25R 25mm dual-feed cannon with a cyclic rate of fire of up to 600 rds/min. A total of 4200 rounds of ready use ammunition can be carried.

The cannon can fire a wide range of ammunition types including: High Explosive - Tracer (HE-T), Armour-piercing discarding sabot (APDS), High Explosive Fragmentation (HE-FRAG) and Armor-Piercing - Tracer (AP-T). A dual setup of the GL21 automatic grenade launchers, followed by a singular HIA K1-2b 12.7mm HMG.

A total of four launchers for the anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) which can fire various types of warhead, are mounted on either side of the main armament. These include a tandem HEAT warhead to defeat targets fitted with explosive reactive armour. To enable targets to be engaged under day and night conditions when the S-17 is stationary or moving, a computerized fire-control system is fitted.

1. Main Turret: On the top of the vehicle is a turret which mounts a dual pair of both anti-infantry cannon and a dual automatic grenade launcher. The turret is controlled by a gunner inside of the turret and has the ability to rotate 360 degrees and barrels can angle up to 85 degrees. Weapon mount is mainly designed for use against other vehicles and against infantry but can angle high enough to be useful against aircraft. Both weapons are in a single sleeve and elevate together.

OWS-25R - 25mm auto cannon. This weapon is a dual feed armament, and has Peritelescopic combined day / night sight for added offensive capabilities. It's mount allows for low weapon depression angles, and stabilized firing for while on the move.

2. Automatic Grenade Launchers: Weapon is GL21 Automatic Grenade Launcher mounted in the turret with a higher payload than a standard grenade launcher. Weapon inflicts massive damage when firing bursts and is well liked by most turret crews.

3. K1-2b 12.7mm: A singular mounted weapon directly in center of the turret. This weapon is effective at both anti-infantry roles as well as against light vehicles and low flying aerocraft.

4. R7-SGFFM

The R7-SGFFM is a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance. The system takes a top-attack flight profile against armored vehicles (attacking the top armor which is generally thinner) but can also take a direct-attack mode for use against buildings or fortifications. This missile also has the ability to engage helicopters in the direct attack mode.

The missile reaches a peak altitude of 150m (492 ft.) in top attack mode and 50m ( 164 ft.) in direct fire mode. The missile is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker. The tandem warhead is fitted with two shaped charges: a precursor warhead to detonate any explosive reactive armor and a primary warhead to penetrate base armor.

5. Smoke Dispenser (2): Mounted on either side of the vehicle and launches smoke grenades. In addition to smoke grenades, tear gas grenades are also common for security operations. While other types of grenades can be used, they have been rarely carried. Recently, there has been consideration for the use of prismatic aerosol and decoy grenades to help protect the vehicle against lasers.
