Mod Olympics!

Postby [violet] » Tue Sep 08, 2009 5:56 pm

Original thread posted 10-11-2003, 16:30.

Previously known as the Mod Academy Awards, this time I decided it was more fun to imagine our Game Mods engaging in sweaty physical contents. Of course, that could be just me.

Here are the results from September through to the present. Note that some of our newer mods haven't had the same length of time to chalk up the results as the older mods, and nevertheless have posted strong showings. These are clearly the ones to watch for next time.

Without further ado, here it is:

1st Event: Help Requests Handled
  1. 857 Reploid Productions
  2. 625 Neutered Sputniks
  3. 569 Scolopendra
  4. 169 The Most Glorious Hack
  5. 92 The SLAGLands
  6. 68 Karmabaijan
  7. 21 Melkor Unchained
  8. 21 Ineptia
  9. 18 Yavin
  10. 18 Enodia
  11. 3 [violet]
  12. 2 GMC Military Arms
Total Help Requests Handled: 2,463

It's the blue-ribbon event, but there are no real surprises, with the favorites taking out the gold, silver, and bronze medals. Scolopendra and Hack in particular put in very strong finishes -- the smart money will already be looking for Hack to take out a medal next time.

2nd Event: Daily Issues Edited
  1. 16 Reploid Productions
  2. 9 The SLAGLands
  3. 8 SalusaSecondus
  4. 1 Enodia
Total Issues Edited: 34

A brand new event, and controversial in some quarters. Very few entrants so far, but still, it's gold to Reppy, silver to SLAGLands, and bronze to our Tech Modling, SalusaSecondus, in the only event he is eligible for.

3rd Event: Nations Deleted
  1. 557 Neutered Sputniks
  2. 286 Reploid Productions
  3. 189 Scolopendra
  4. 155 The Most Glorious Hack
  5. 90 The SLAGLands
  6. 41 GMC Military Arms
  7. 41 Karmabaijan
  8. 21 Ineptia
  9. 20 Enodia
  10. 20 Menelmacar
  11. 14 Melkor Unchained
  12. 12 [violet]
Total Nations Deleted: 1,446.

NationStates's own "big bad" Neutered Sputniks claims the gold in this most brutal of sports. There's daylight and then Reppy and Scolo for the silver and bronze.

Let's check the medal tally!

Reploid Productions: 2 gold, 1 silver
Neutered Sputniks: 1 gold, 1 silver
The SLAGLands: 1 silver
Scolopendra: 2 bronze
SalusaSecondus: 1 bronze

4th Event: Nations Ejected from UN
  1. 347 Reploid Productions
  2. 130 Scolopendra
  3. 111 Neutered Sputniks
  4. 84 Enodia
  5. 64 The Most Glorious Hack
  6. 44 Karmabaijan
  7. 29 The SLAGLands
  8. 3 Ineptia
  9. 1 [violet]
Total Nations Ejected: 813.

Once again it's the three heavyweights in amongst the medals, this time with Scolopendra just pipping Neut for the silver. With only one event to go, Reppy looks hard to beat.

5th Event: UN Proposals Removed
  1. 418 Enodia
  2. 41 GMC Military Arms
  3. 10 Neutered Sputniks
  4. 8 Reploid Productions
  5. 7 Scolopendra
  6. 2 The Most Glorious Hack
  7. 2 [violet]
Total Proposals Removed: 488

A complete whitewash! Enodia dominates, racking up 10 times the score of the silver medallist, GMC. Neut snaffles a bronze medal, which may come in handy for the final standings. Once again, [violet] stumbles in gasping for breath at the rear.

And that's it! The final standings are:

Reploid Productions: 3 gold, 1 silver
Neutered Sputniks: 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze
Enodia: 1 gold
Scolopendra: 1 silver, 2 bronze
The SLAGLands: 1 silver
GMC: 1 silver
SalusaSecondus: 1 bronze

But of course, there's more to the Mod Olympics than just medals. For the record, here's the complete list of all Game Mod actions. No doubt our viewing audience today will be as impressed by these numbers as I am -- a harder working bunch you will not find!

It's the mods who keep this game ticking over, day in, day out -- every one of them is a champion.

All Game Moderator Actions
  1. 6,662 Reploid Productions
  2. 5,523 Neutered Sputniks
  3. 3,391 Scolopendra
  4. 2,071 The Most Glorious Hack
  5. 1,385 Enodia
  6. 1,046 The SLAGLands
  7. 1,028 Karmabaijan
  8. 343 [violet]
  9. 291 Yavin
  10. 181 GMC Military Arms
  11. 149 Melkor Unchained
  12. 126 Ineptia
  13. 49 Menelmacar
Total Game Moderator Actions: 22,245.

Game Mod Olympics II!

Postby [violet] » Tue Sep 08, 2009 5:58 pm

Original thread posted 11-03-2004, 16:26.

Yes! It's time for the Game Mod Olympics, where our mods compete against each other for no discernible reward. But still, it's exciting!

Last time, if memory serves (because the forum search function sure doesn't), Reploid Productions won the most gold medals, with Neutered Sputniks in hot contention. This time, however, there's expected to be strong competition from the fresh young Game Mods. Experts are predicting a few changes on the podium!

Our Olympics opens with our two UN-related events:

--- Nations Ejected from UN ---
105 Sirocco
100 Reploid Productions
94 Cogitation
62 The Most Glorious Hack
31 Scolopendra
24 Enodia
2 Melkor Unchained
1 GMC Military Arms

Gold! Gold for Sirocco! Pipping Reploid Productions at the post, it's an upset in the first round!

--- UN Proposals Removed ---
155 Enodia
7 Scolopendra
2 The Most Glorious Hack
2 Cogitation
2 Sirocco
1 Stephistan

No surprises here, as Enodia creams the competition in his signature event.

Now for one of the most popular events, nicknamed the "Hardest Mod" competition:

--- Nations Deleted ---
380 Cogitation
170 The Most Glorious Hack
128 Sirocco
73 Reploid Productions
72 Scolopendra
72 GMC Military Arms
36 Menelmacar
22 Stephistan
14 Karmabaijan
12 Neutered Sputniks
9 Enodia
2 Melkor Unchained
1 [violet]

Another shock! Those who believed Cogitation was more thought than action are forced to eat their words, as he romps home for the gold. And yes, that's right, Neutered Sputniks finished outside the medals. Who'd have thunk it??

So after 3 events, let's check the medal tally:

Sirocco: 1 gold, 2 bronze
Cogitation: 1 gold, 2 bronze
Enodia: 1 gold
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 silver
Scolopendra: 1 silver

The new Game Mods are certainly creating a splash! But can they keep up the pace? Enodia is off to a fine start, but the experienced pundits know he tends to peak early. By her own high standards, Reppy has started relatively slowly, but we know she has the goods to come home hard.

Time now for the "Daily Issues" events:

--- Issues Edited ---
6 Reploid Productions
3 Sirocco

--- Issues Processed ---
896 Sirocco
18 Reploid Productions

Reppy scores a couple of crucial medals, and Sirocco proves he's not afraid of a queue of three thousand player-submitted issues.

Now for the "Most Communicative Game Mod" award:

--- Telegrams Sent ---
177 Cogitation
161 Enodia
145 Sirocco
90 The Most Glorious Hack
53 Reploid Productions
18 Scolopendra
6 Karmabaijan
4 Melkor Unchained
3 GMC Military Arms
3 Ineptia
2 [violet]
1 Neutered Sputniks
1 Stephistan

It's a close one! All three medal winners cross the line within a few seconds of each other. But Cogitation snags the gold, which means our tally so far looks like this:

Sirocco: 2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze
Cogitation: 2 gold, 2 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 gold, 2 silver
Enodia: 1 gold, 1 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Scolopendra: 1 silver

Sirocco has won a medal in every event so far, which is an astonishing performance. But with the Task events coming up, can he hold off Reppy and Cogitation???

Let's find out:

--- Tasks Resolved ---
198 Cogitation
137 The Most Glorious Hack
126 Sirocco
83 Reploid Productions
58 Scolopendra
8 Enodia
7 Karmabaijan
5 Ineptia
4 Melkor Unchained
2 Stephistan
2 [violet]

Amazing work from Cogitation here, really knocking over those tasks.

--- Total Tasks Dealt With ---
414 Sirocco
338 Cogitation
227 The Most Glorious Hack
171 Reploid Productions
105 Scolopendra
17 Ineptia
11 Enodia
9 Karmabaijan
6 Melkor Unchained
3 stephistan
2 [violet]

Reppy finishes fourth in both events; a strong but unlucky performance. With Cogitation and Sirocco both scoring another gold each -- with just one event to go! -- they've opened up a crucial break on the rest of the field. Yes, it's a two horse race now, and it'll all come down to the final event!

But let's check that tally one last time:

Sirocco: 3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze
Cogitation: 3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 gold, 2 silver
Enodia: 1 gold, 1 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver, 2 bronze
Scolopendra: 1 silver

And here it is... the final event.

Sirocco and Cogitation limber up on the starting line, shooting each other hard glances.

And they're off!

--- Total Moderator Actions ---
4,846 Cogitation
3,064 Sirocco
1,820 Reploid Productions
1,776 The Most Glorious Hack
830 Enodia
733 Scolopendra
473 GMC Military Arms
308 Menelmacar
161 Neutered Sputniks
135 Karmabaijan
106 Stephistan
53 [violet]
37 Melkor Unchained
35 Ineptia

Cogitation! Cogitation crosses first!

An incredible contest, as Sirocco, despite winning a medal in every single category, is pipped at the final post by Cogitation. Hack puts in another great effort, and is unlucky to finish outside the medals.

The final result is:

Cogitation: 4 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze
Sirocco: 3 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze
Enodia: 1 gold, 1 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver, 2 bronze
Scolopendra: 1 silver

A brilliant performance by these guys. But let's not forget the rest of our competitors, all of whom have done great things just to be here. Well done mods!

Mod Upheaval!

Well, kind of. Today we have the THIRD NOT-QUITE PERIODIC MOD OLYMPICS, plus some promotions, and a reassignment thrown in. Whoo! Exciting times, exciting times.

First, it is my pleasure to announce two big promotions. In recognition of outstanding service over a significant period, Scolopendra is hereby promoted from Game Moderator to Senior Game Moderator. And for an enormous amount of technical work behind the scenes that nobody ever sees, SalusaSecondus is promoted to Game Admin. Well done guys!

Now for a reassignment. Oftentimes a mod will be very active for a while, then, as their RL circumstances change, change down a gear. Titles should reflect a mod's current role, not their past service, so from now on if a mod becomes less active, his/her title will change accordingly. This is not by any means a demotion or punishment, just a reflection of the mod's current availibility. Thus, Melkor Unchained, one of the game's original mods but less active these days, is moving from Senior Game Moderator to Game Moderator.

This means we now have just two Senior Game Moderators -- Reploid Productions and Scolopendra -- but both are highly active.

How active? Well, let's find out! The latest Mod Olympics kicks off with some UN-related tasks:

--- UN Cheat Checks ---
771 : Reploid Productions
483 : Cogitation
465 : Scolopendra
212 : Sirocco
79 : Stephistan
67 : The Most Glorious Hack

126 : Enodia
43 : Sirocco
42 : Cogitation

3 : Stephistan

After these three events, we have:

Reploid Productions: 2 gold
Cogitation: 1 silver, 2 bronze
Scolopendra: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Enodia: 1 gold
Sirocco: 1 silver

On to the "Life and Death" events: who giveth and who taketh away?

--- Nations Deleted ---

Whoa! Stephistan crashes her way to the front in "Nations Deleted"! Reppy just misses out on a medal in that event, but picks up a handy silver in the Lazarus Stakes.

Cogitation picks up 2 bronzes for a total of 5 medals -- a real consistent performer, this one, but yet to score his first gold.

Reploid Productions: 2 gold, 1 silver

Our two Senior GMs come out on top, with strong challenges from Sirocco and Cogitation the all-rounder unlucky to miss a top-3 spot.

Congratulations and thanks to all our hardworking Mods, both Game Moderators and Forum Moderators!

Yes! Yes! It's the Game Moderator Olympics!!

Postby [violet] » Tue Sep 08, 2009 6:01 pm

Originally posted 14-10-2004, 15:55.

Has it really been so long? It seems like only a few weeks ago that our game moderators were leaping, sprinting, jumping, and tossing for your entertainment. Well, here they are again, because it's time for...

The GAME MODERATOR OLYMPICS VI!

(It might actually not be VI. It could be V, or even IV. I'm guessing here. Here's the thread for last time, anyway.)

This is where we review what our game mods have been up to since mid-May: who's been deleting nations, who's issuing warnings, who's ejecting UN rules violators, and much much more. It's the culmination of five months of work... so without further ado... let the Games begin!

As is traditional (since last time), we open with the "United Nations" events. Last Olympics, Reploid Productions came out of this stage in the lead, with strong performances by Cogitation and Scolopendra. And, of course, Enodia had a lock on the "UN Proposals removed" category. But this time around, things could be very different.

So let's find out: Who's been sniffing out the UN cheats? Who's been booting out offenders? Who keeps the UN Proposal list clean and who sends out warnings?

--- UN Cheat Checks ---
1226 : Scolopendra
1060 : Reploid Productions
948 : Melkor Unchained
897 : Sirocco
885 : Cogitation
271 : The Most Glorious Hack
105 : SalusaSecondus
73 : Karmabaijan
45 : Stephistan
42 : The SLAGLands
35 : Menelmacar
22 : Ineptia

--- UN Warnings Issued ---

34 : The Most Glorious Hack
19 : Scolopendra
11 : SalusaSecondus
8 : Melkor Unchained
5 : [violet]
4 : Stephistan

Scolopendra: 2 gold
Sirocco: 1 gold, 2 silver
Cogitation: 1 gold, 1 silver
Reploid Productions: 1 silver
Melkor Unchained: 2 bronze
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 bronze

Scolo bursts out of the blocks, but Sirocco picks up medals in three out of four events -- including gold in the brand new "UN Warnings Issued" event. Cogitation steps into Enodia's traditional event, scooping up the gold, and collects a silver to go with it. Cog has been a highly consistent performer in the past... is this his Olympics??

Now for the always popular "Life and Death" events...

--- Nations Deleted ---
833 : Scolopendra
492 : Sirocco
311 : Cogitation
256 : The Most Glorious Hack

66 : Reploid Productions
58 : Karmabaijan
48 : Stephistan
46 : [violet]
22 : SalusaSecondus
22 : Menelmacar
15 : The SLAGLands

Last Olympics, Stephistan pwned the "Nations Deleted" event and Scolo pipped Reploid Productions as the Giver of Life. But now it's an arm-wrestle between Scolopendra and Sirocco, with each taking a gold and a silver.

Melkor is unlucky to miss a medal here -- just 9 restorations behind Ineptia.

Let's check the leaderboard:

Scolopendra: 3 gold, 1 silver
Sirocco: 2 gold, 3 silver
Cogitation: 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 silver
Melkor Unchained: 2 bronze
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 bronze
Ineptia: 1 bronze

Now onto a few "all-rounder" events...

--- Issues Accepted ---
29 : Sirocco
2 : Melkor Unchained
1 : Reploid Productions

--- Telegrams Sent ---
890 : Sirocco
759 : Scolopendra
412 : Cogitation

75 : SalusaSecondus
38 : Karmabaijan
32 : Stephistan
16 : The SLAGLands
11 : Ineptia
8 : Menelmacar
7 : [violet]

Sirocco claims the Issues Accepted event, as expected, but tops the Telegrams Sent list for the first time, too, and snares a silver for Warnings Issued. It looks like Scolo and Sirocco are pulling away from the pack!

Cogitation grabs two more bronzes, confirming his status as a proven all-round competitor. Also notable are strong performances from Melkor and Hack, despite neither getting their fingers on a medal in the last two events. Reppy is up there with them, but doesn't seem to quite have the raw power she's showed in previous Olympics... perhaps she's carrying an injury?

Sirocco: 4 gold, 4 silver
Scolopendra: 4 gold, 2 silver
Cogitation: 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Melkor Unchained: 1 silver, 2 bronze
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 bronze
Ineptia: 1 bronze

A stunning result -- looks like this is turning into a two-horse race. But as we enter the stage of Help Requests events, which nag will have the staying power?

131 : GMC Military Arms
57 : Stephistan
37 : SalusaSecondus
19 : [violet]
12 : The SLAGLands
10 : Menelmacar

Unbelievable! Once again, Sirocco and Scolopendra take a gold and silver each! With just ONE EVENT remaining, they're locked on 5 gold medals each!

A strong showing from Melkor in both events confirms that he's back on the scene in a big way, too. He nudges ahead of Reppy to move into fourth spot on the leaderboard behind Cogitation.

Sirocco: 5 gold, 5 silver
Scolopendra: 5 gold, 3 silver
Cogitation: 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze
Melkor Unchained: 1 silver, 4 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 silver, 1 bronze
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 bronze
Ineptia: 1 bronze

A hush falls over the crowd... this is it... the final event...

And there it is! Sirocco, who last Olympics pipped Cogitation for third spot, comes home with an incredible 6 gold medals!

Sirocco: 6 gold, 5 silver (last time: 2g 1s 1b)
Scolopendra: 5 gold, 4 silver (3g 4s 1b)
Cogitation: 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze (1g 1s 5b)
Melkor Unchained: 1 silver, 5 bronze (-)
Reploid Productions: 1 silver, 1 bronze (2g 4s 2b)
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze (-)
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 bronze (-)
Ineptia: 1 bronze (-)

What an enthralling contest it was. And a performance like this can't go unrewarded. It's my pleasure to announce that Sirocco is hereby promoted to Senior Game Moderator, joining Reploid Productions and Scolopendra at the top of the hallowed GM ranks. Well-deserved.

Additionally, after long and outstanding service in the forums, Tactical Grace is promoted to Game Moderator... so watch out next Olympics, a new player will be on the scene!

Congratulations to all our hard-working mods! Combined, there were almost 70,000 moderator actions over the last five months -- and that's not even counting the incredible efforts they make in the forums. This place wouldn't work without them -- thank you mods!

OMG! Game Mod Olympics!

Ah, to think it was October last time we ran the Game Mod Olympics. It was warmer then, much warmer, unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case it was colder. Or if you live near the equator, it'd be pretty much the same. But that's not important. The important thing is that it's the first Game Mod Olympics of 2005!

(For your convenience, here's the thread for the last Olympics.)

This time there's controversy right from the start. As Scolopendra peels off his tracksuit, the crowd gasps at the sight of his bulging biceps, his trembling triceps, and his... uh... quietly impressive quadraceps. Steroids? Some kind of genetic enhancement? A huge, realistic-looking exoskeleton piloted by the actual Scolo? All seem entirely plausible. So as the genetically enhanced, steroid-taking, Scolopendra exoskeleton strides to the first event, cracking the ground and causing nearby babies to burst into tears, the other competitors know they're in for a tough battle.

Amazing! Scolopendra steams through the first two events, brushing aside all challengers. Then, however, he has to stop to vent all that steam from his exoskeleton, and Hack powers ahead to grab two golds.

After the UN events, it's Hack and the three Senior Game Mods with most of the medals:

Scolopendra: 2 gold, 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 gold
Sirocco: 3 silver, 1 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 silver, 1 bronze

While Scolopendra scales back up to full power, Hack snatches a third gold! And in the prized "Nations Deleted" event, too, after which contestants receive their medals on a dias made of skulls. As popular as it is tasteful. Ineptia again shines as the Bringer of Life, but not as brightly as Scolo, nor Sirocco, who is building up quite the silverware collection.

Not much action in the "Issues Accepted" category, and in both the other two events, it's (1) Scolo (2) Hack (3) Sirocco! This gives Scolo his first real break on Hack, but there are still the crucial Tasklist events to go. And Sirocco has more medals than anybody!

It's a slaughter, with Scolopendra tossing the hapless bodies of his competitors around like rag dolls, then forcing the dolls into compromising poses, just to make it extra embarrassing. There are excellent performances from other mods, but it's hard to recognize this when Scolo is jumping up and down on their twitching bodies.

And that's it! The final medal tally:

Scolopendra: 8 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (last time: 5-2-0)
The Most Glorious Hack: 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze (0-0-1)
Sirocco: 1 gold, 7 silver, 3 bronze (6-5-0)
Reploid Productions: 2 silver, 3 bronze (0-1-1)
Cogitation: 1 bronze (1-1-3)
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze (0-0-1)
Ineptia: 1 bronze (0-0-1)

A record-breaking 8 golds from Scolo is truly amazing, as is Sirocco's grand total of 11 medals (for the second Olympics in a row). And what about Hack, who went from 1 bronze last time to a fistfull of medals today?

Now for promotions! I am pleased to announce we have two. First, Melkor Unchained has proven he's back on the scene, so his position of Senior Game Moderator is hereby restored. The young 'uns among you may not know that Melkor was our first mod, and, as he will tell you if you give him the chance, he once moderated the entire site by himself for six weeks. Last year he went quiet for a while, during which he dropped down to regular Game Mod, but it's high time he got his Seniorship back. It's very well-deserved.

Secondly, Myrth has served admirably in the forums and has, foolishly or otherwise, agreed to take up the mantle of Game Moderator. So expect to see him in the next Olympics!

And keep an eye out for Hack -- a very strong performer this time around. Definitely one to watch.

To all our mods, forum and game, a huge thank you and congratulations on a fantastic job. There were over 84,000 game mod actions in the last four months, which is astounding (and well up on the last Olympics), especially since it doesn't even include forum moderation. THANK YOU MODS!

Game Mod Olympics? Why, thank you, don't mind if I do

Postby [violet] » Tue Sep 08, 2009 6:03 pm

Originally posted 11-05-2005, 22:29.

Initially there were lacklustre ticket sales in the lead up to this Game Mod Olympics, attributable to Scolopendra's remarkable dominance the last time this event was held. After all, who wants to watch Scolopendra (wearing, don't forget, that formidable exoskeleton) pound one hapless competitor after another into the dirt? Just his small but dedicated band of crazed groupies, one would imagine.

Then the rumors began to ripple through: there was a new kid in town, a kid with a steely glint in his eye and a bag of new tricks. Myrth, NationStates's newest Game Mod, was said to be ready to take it right up to the reigning champ. Suddenly, interest bloomed. Ticket sales ran hot. Even Scolopendra's groupies began to look nervous. Maybe there was a real competition here after all.

So here we are! As is traditional, the Olympics gets cracking with the UN events:

The crowd gasps! Scolopendra has clearly spent too much time in the arms of his adoring fans and not enough on the training track, and is left gasping as others power past. And none fleeter than Myrth, who beats out all comers in three out of four events, and takes silver in the fourth! What an amazing start!

Myrth: 3 gold, 1 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold, 2 bronze
Sirocco: 2 silver, 1 bronze
SalusaSecondus: 1 silver, 1 bronze

The new kid has gone out hard early. But does he have the endurance to keep it up, or will he come to a sticky, premature end?

Things turn brutal, as Myrth grabs two more golds. But Sirocco continues to make him fight, collecting well-deserved silvers, plus a gold in the all-important "Issues" event.

Myrth: 7 gold, 1 silver
Sirocco: 1 gold, 6 silver, 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold, 2 bronze
SalusaSecondus: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Reploid Productions: 1 silver, 1 bronze
Cogitation: 3 bronze

The marquee events are still to come, but Myrth is already out to an unbeatable lead! Scolopendra's groupies stop lovingly stroking his body to gnaw their fingernails: will his all-time record of 8 golds be broken??

Yes! It will! That's an unbelievable 9 gold medals for Myrth! A new record!

Myrth: 9 gold, 2 silver (last time: 0-0-0)
Sirocco: 2 gold, 6 silver, 1 bronze (1-7-3)
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold, 2 bronze (3-2-1)
Reploid Productions: 1 silver, 1 bronze (0-2-3)
SalusaSecondus: 1 silver, 1 bronze (0-0-0)
Cogitation: 3 bronze (0-0-1)
Scolopendra: 2 bronze (8-1-1)

A truly stunning performance from the whippersnapper. But also awe-inspiring is Sirocco's effort to rack up 9 medals, which takes him to an incredible 31 from the last three Olympics. Clearly a distance performer! Sirocco has been there over the long haul.

All our mods put in amazing efforts, day in, day out, to keep this site ticking over, and all deserve to take a bow. Since February they've performed over 51,500 moderator actions, and dealt with almost 10,000 individual player requests for help. Thank you mods!!!

[Edit/Update]: Corruption amongst Olympic officials uncovered! Myrth was awarded a silver that should have gone to Reppy. Sackings all round!

Yes? Yes! YES! Game Mod Olympics!

Talk ran hot leading into this Olympics, as it became clear that last time's record-breaking winner, Myrth, was not going to see out the whole event. With his early exit, who would step up? Would Scolopendra return with an even bigger exoskeleton? Would Sirocco, always up there amongst the leaders, snatch the ultimate glory? Would a new champion emerge from among the fresh-faced challengers? And who can write off Reppy, Cogitation, or any of the long-time proven performers?

As usual, Game Mods enter the arena to the sound of all their national anthems being played simultaneously, creating the unique mood that listeners can only describe as "cacophonous" (CD in stores now). It's handshakes all round, then they line up for the first series of events: the UN Challenges!

Fris! Fris! Fris! The crowd goes wild as Frisbeeteria picks up three more gold, which--wait for the official confirmation--yes, there it is! Frisbeeteria has equalled Myrth's record of nine gold and two silvers! Unbelievable!

Katganistan romps in for silvers in all three events, and--you guessed it--Sirocco cleans up the bronzes. There are strong performances from other mods, particularly Scolopendra and Cogitation, but this day belongs to the new mods on the block!

Frisbeeteria: 9 gold, 2 silver (last time: Did Not Compete)
Katganistan: 1 gold, 9 silver (DNC)
Sirocco: 1 gold, 10 bronze (2-6-1)
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold, 1 bronze (1-2-0)
Reploid Productions: 1 silver (0-1-1)

Never before have so many medals been shared by so few competitors. And Sirocco has now raked in 42 medals over the last 4 Olympics, a truly incredible effort.

Since May 11 this year, Game Mods have performed 104,345 actions. They recently dealt with the 42,000th lodged request for help. These are mind-boggling numbers, and make it clear just how important they are to the smooth running of this site. So thank a mod today!

Well done mods!

New version of NationStates means: Game Mod Olympics!

The people wanted to know: could Frisbeeteria continue his awesome form from the previous Game Mod Olympics? How would new kid on the block Euroslavia perform? Was it possible for Sirocco to earn any more bronze medals?

This year, contestants entered the arena performing the native dances of their homeland. Crowd opinion ranged from "Beautifully evocative" and "Profoundly moving" to "I just wish he'd put some clothes on."

Then it's straight into the action! As always, the Olympics gets started with the famous UN events:

Whoa! Frisbeeteria leaves the competition in no doubt that he's here to play. In the first event, UN Cheat Checks, Fris pounds the opposition into the dirt and laughs at their flailing bodies. And he wins the next two comfortably, too... but with a decreasing margin. By the fourth event, Fris slips into second place, beaten by the always feisty Katganistan. The murmurs begin: Has he gone too hard too early?

And what a start from Euro! Medals in all four events show he's not intimidated by this field.

Sirocco powers out of the blocks in the event he has made his own over many, many Olympics. But then it's business as usual, with the awesome trio of Frisbeeteria, Katganistan, and Euroslavia dominating the other events!

SalusaSecondus comes in second in the Daily Issues event, but is led protesting from the field after it is explained to him that this is a Game Mod Olympics, not an Admin Olympics.

Frisbeeteria: 6 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze
Katganistan: 2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze
Sirocco: 1 gold
Euroslavia: 3 silver, 5 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver

This Olympics sees the introduction of a new event: "Watchlist Modifications"! This confusingly arcane event, which appears to be a kind of cross between marathon running, syncronized swimming, and duck shooting, measures the Game Mods' ability to track down the most vile NationStates evil-doers.

Sirocco: 1 gold
Euroslavia: 3 silver, 5 bronze

Frisbeeteria, Frisbeeteria, and again Frisbeeteria! Followed by Kat, Kat, Kat, and Euro, Euro, Euro! What amazing--even monotonous--consistency! That's what the crowd pays its money for!

The final standings:

Frisbeeteria: 10 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (last time: 9-2-0)
Katganistan: 2 gold, 7 silver, 2 bronze (1-9-0)
Sirocco: 1 gold (1-0-10)
Euroslavia: 3 silver, 8 bronze (Did Not Compete)
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver (1-0-1)
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze (0-0-0)

An astonishing 11 medals in his first Olympics for Euroslavia! Amazing stuff.

Also noteworthy is Hack continuing to nip at the leaders' heels, once again picking up metal. The crowd loves to see old campaigners like Hack still able to take it up to the young pups.

But the real story is the complete dominance by Frisbeeteria, who came very close to performing more moderator actions than every other Game Mod put together. It's particularly remarkable given very strong performances by Katganistan and Euroslavia--this field was no push-over.

Since November 1, 2005, there were 99,903 Game Moderator actions, dealing with 13,183 requests for help by players. Once again, it's astonishing that this small group manage to do so much. They keep this game running.

Congratulations and well done mods!

The Game Mod Olympics: most boring ever?

Postby [violet] » Tue Sep 08, 2009 6:08 pm

Word on the street was that this could be the worst Game Mod Olympics ever. "Pff," people said. "Game Mod Olympics? You mean the Frisbeeteria Olympics. Who wants to pay good money to watch Fris belt the living crap out of whoever comes near? If I wanted to see an uncompetitive mismatch between grossly mismatched opponents, I'd stay at home and beat my children."

Certainly Frisbeeteria's dominance of recent Mod Olympics was indisputable. Despite brave showings from the other athletes, in particular Katganistan, Frisbeeteria had run rampant, finishing some events running backwards, just to show off. And the less said about the buttocks-wiggling incident, the better.

To avoid the ugly sight of empty stadiums on international TV, organizers herded the city's homeless inside, prompting some commentators to remark that this was surely the least fragrant Games of all time. By the time the moderators emerged, large sections of the crowd were asleep, facing the wrong way, or accusing each other of stealing.

Those few in the crowd who were actually there for the performances noticed Katganistan was wearing a sleek black head-to-toe bodysuit, complete with little wiggly cat ears. Some believed that this was the latest in aerodynamic sports engineering, while others said, "I dunno, man... I just think she's really into cats."

But now the time has come! As per tradition, first up is the UN events:

--- UN Cheat Checks ---

The crowd yawns as one, as Frisbeeteria smashes them in "UN Cheat Checks," flattens them in "UN Ejections," crushes all comers in "UN Warnings Issued," and misses gold in "UN Proposals Removed" only because he stops to sign autographs! Yes, clearly it's going to be another one of those days. While Frisbeeteria begins to audibly speculate on where exactly he's going to find room for yet another trophy, patrons begin to talk amongst themselves, wondering whether it might be possible to sell their tickets for the other events, what might be on TV, and how likely they are to get out of the stadium with their wallets.

Frisbeeteria: 3 gold, 1 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold
Katganistan: 3 silver
Euroslavia: 4 bronze

Then it's on to the Life & Death events! Amnesty International calls it "a monsterous travesty against all humanity," but you can't argue with the ratings!

As officials began lifting the fallen bodies into sacks and carrying them off the field, Frisbeeteria pumps his fists in victory. But is his bravado for real? Spectators can't help noticing that in "Nations Restored," Katganistan not only beat him, but did so resoundingly. As Frisbeeteria nervously eyes Katganistan's little cat ears, which are fluttering delightfully in the breeze, the word starts to go out: we may have a contest here.

Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 2 silver
Katganistan: 1 gold, 4 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold
Euroslavia: 6 bronze

Everyone but Sirocco gets confused about when the "Issues" event is meant to start, and as a result he sweeps it. Frisbeeteria, looking noticably sharper and more focused, cleans up in "Telegrams Sent," but is pipped by Katganistan in "Warnings Issued" by the barest of margins!

Meanwhile Euroslavia picks up his eighth bronze medal, a remarkable achievement, and one that causes commentators to flick through the record books, looking for the most medals ever won by a competitor who failed to score higher than bronze.

Frisbeeteria: 5 gold, 3 silver
Katganistan: 2 gold, 5 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold
Sirocco: 1 gold
Euroslavia: 8 bronze

Frisbeeteria: 5 gold, 6 silver
Katganistan: 5 gold, 5 silver
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold
Sirocco: 1 gold
Euroslavia: 10 bronze

Spectators who sold their tickets now frantically try to buy them back, at grossly inflated prices. The eyes of the world turn to watch: is this the moment that Frisbeeteria is finally unseated?

No! It's not! In an inspiring contest, Frisbeeteria beats Katganistan for the final gold! And that means he once again wins the Games! It was the result everyone expected, but, in a complete surprise, by only the barest of margins.

All credit to Katganistan, who breathed new life into the competition and came agonizingly close to walking away with the ultimate prize. The crowd stand to applaud both her and Frisbeeteria. And there's a special cheer for crowd favorite Euroslavia, who's claimed a record-breaking, jaw-dropping 11 bronze medals.

Frisbeeteria: 6 gold, 6 silver (last time: 10-1-0)
Katganistan: 5 gold, 6 silver (2-7-2)
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 gold (0-1-0)
Sirocco: 1 gold (1-0-0)
Euroslavia: 11 bronze (0-3-8)
GMC Military Arms: 1 bronze (0-0-1)

It's been almost five months since the last Game Mod Olympics, during which time 83,213 moderator actions were made and 11,026 help requests from players processed. The fact that the mods do this day after day and year after year shouldn't take away from the fact that they are truly amazing numbers.

Congratulations and thank you to all mods!

Is it that time again? Game Mod Olympics!

Postby [violet] » Tue Sep 08, 2009 6:10 pm

Originally posted 24-04-2008, 16:58.

It's been a long, dark 18 months since the last Game Mod Olympics. This was actually scheduled for last year, but during the torch relay, protestors snatched the eternal flame and scampered away with it. For the last six months, special police have been leaving no house unransacked and village unburned in an effort to find it--and at last they have!

An alert, wary crowd rises to its feet as Special Inquisitor [Classified] runs into the arena, bearing the somewhat battered torch proudly aloft! Wild, scripted applause breaks out--magnificent! It's such an electric moment, not even the gentle spattering of blood droplets from the torch can ruin it. Special Inquisitor [Classified] runs a lap of the arena, and--look at that! He still has time to jot down the names of spectators who do not appear to be as Happy and Enthusiastic as the government ordered. How dutiful!

With the preliminaries over, here come the athletes! There was some talk of boycotts, given the contentious location of this Game Mod Olympics, but all that's left behind now--it's time for action! The crowd oohs over Frisbeeteria, a legendary competitor in past Olympics and still looking fighting fit, despite perhaps getting past his prime. And bouncing past--Katganistan! Those who said she'd never legally get a living cat's tail grafted to her buttocks didn't count on this country's fine back alley chop shops!

First up are the UN events. The competitors take their places... but wait, what's this? A squadron of blue helicopters are descending from the sky! Is this part of the ceremony? Wait... they seem to have "UN" painted on the side... they're landing now... men and women in dark suits are emerging... oh no! They're UN lawyers! The crowd screams in panic as the lawyers begin handing out cease and desist letters, demanding no association with the competition going on here today!

Finally, it's all straightened out, and the lawyers step back into their helicopters. We can only watch in awe as they fly away, marvelling that world poverty is so under control that they can take time out to attend our Olympics.

So let's continue! With... the "NationStates Organizational Body We Had Before World Assembly" events!

It's Fris vs Kat for most of the way, as the two favorites jostle for position. Frisbeeteria elbows Katganistan aside in "Cheat Checks," trips her just before the finish line in "Ejections," and double-teams her with The Most Glorious Hack in "Proposals Removed," but Kat uses her genetically enhanced tail to vault ahead in "Warnings Issued"!

Frisbeeteria: 3 gold, 1 silver
Katganistan: 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze
The Most Glorious Hack: 1 silver

Now for the always popular Life & Death events! As a special feature of this Olympics, organizers have promised that any crowd members who fail to smile at all times will participate in this event!

Ah, some things never change... when it comes to obliterating nations, Frisbeeteria is a machine, but when it comes time to restore them to life, he's got other things to do. Kat, however, rushes from nation to nation, tenderly breathing life into their governmental lungs.

Although the Big Two are dominating, just as pundits predicted, let's not overlook the plucky performance of Scolopendra. With all thirteen million of his little legs scuttling away, he's picked up four bronze medals already!

Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 2 silver

Sirocco starts his pet event by glaring around forcefully at anyone who dares take to the starting line. All other competitors shrink away, except for Hack, who runs a respectful distance behind, stopping whenever Sirocco looks around.

In "Telegrams Sent" and "Warnings Issued," though, Katganistan smashes all comers! Perhaps it's age creeping up on Fris--or perhaps it's Kat's ability to talk twice as fast by using a complicated series of grunts and meeows? One thing's for sure: when it comes to warnings, Kat's got it covered.

Katganistan: 4 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze

It's almost the exact same results as last time! The crowd gasps at the sheer predictability, just like they were told to! As we've established, when it comes to being kind and helpful, Katganistan takes the gold. Fris is close, but left cursing there aren't more events where you have to stomp on people.

Katganistan: 7 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze
Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 7 silver
Sirocco: 1 gold
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver
Scolopendra: 9 bronze
Euroslavia: 1 bronze

Amazing! With only one event left, Katganistan takes an unassailable lead! For the first time in as long as anyone can remember, Frisbeeteria has been usurped! All that's left for the great champion is to pull himself together for one last victory in the final event!

But no! He can't even do that! Kat flips past in a series of cat-wheels, mewling with delight! In fact, she racks up so many "Moderator Actions" that she clocks the scoreboard, ruining its 5-digit formatting! The competitors gasp, waiting for the inevitable screen explosion, and for Kat to run a lap of honor in slow-motion to inspiring music while flames and glass rain down around her... but it doesn't happen. It's just bad formatting. Still--amazing!

Katganistan: 8 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze (last time: 5-6-0)
Frisbeeteria: 4 gold, 8 silver (last time: 6-6-0)
Sirocco: 1 gold (last time: 1-0-0)
The Most Glorious Hack: 2 silver (last time: 1-0-0)
Scolopendra: 10 bronze (last time: 0-0-0)
Euroslavia: 1 bronze (last time: 0-0-11)

And look at Scolopendra! He's running about in excitement... in fact, he's taking his ten bronze medals over to the eternal flame... he's melting them down! And... and he's pouring the molten bronze over his body! He's bronzed himself! There is now a magnificant, bronze statue of Scolopependra towering over the stadium! Fantastic!

What an incredible Olympics! Since September 2006, there were 224,462 moderator actions performed and 35,706 player and automated requests. Thank you and congratulations to all our mods!
