How do you remove images from the backgrounds of items you wish to put up here on the forums? For example I made this:

Image

For the Jolt forums and since both Jolt and my image had a white background, there was no problem. But now the forums have a different color for the background so it looks rather odd. I'm hoping there is some graphical genius out there that can tell me how to just totally take out the white and just make it transparent.

Both .gif and .png file types support transparency- you'd need to go into an picture editing program like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or GIMP to set the white to appear transparent, and save it as one of those file types.

How do I tell it to see them as transparent?

Or, putting the background as the color, "#EAEAE2" (hexcode) for the picture would do the job too (at least for now - there may be skin changes).

only problem with that is that the posts alternate colors. That would work if i posted on odd numbered posts but not even number posts or whatever color that is.

There is a beautiful little free program called Microsoft GIF Animator, made for Windows 95, and is now freeware, that does the job, if you don't want to get a large image editor program/purchased one. :)

Just a note to the transparent background thing. I have had problems in the past with transparent background .PNG files. While Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera treat these files properly, Internet Explorer does (or at least did) not. It converts transparent areas of .PNGs to white; or, at least it did as of a year or so ago. I know that they have released IE 8 and perhaps this has corrected the problem.

All browsers I am familiar with have no problem with transparency in .GIF files, however and .GIFs are generally smaller than .PNGs anyway. The drawback with .GIF is that it is an old format and allows only 256 colours.

Just some stuff to consider with transparent backgrounds I thought might be helpful to add.

The background colors alternate, so having a set background will show up on 1/2 of all posts anyway. :/
