There's a whole slew of reasons why they'd hate me:

1. I'm not a Baptist..
2. I'm a veteran, and so therefore represented and defended the US of Fags (as they would likely say)
3. I would in fact defend homosexuals, lesbians and the what-not
4. Even though I am Christian, I hate Dominionist Theology and actively oppose the imposition of Christian (or any other for that matter) religious moral enforcement into the civil law.
5. I'm not a Dispensationalist
6. I do not subscribe to the Young-Earth Creation Theology
7. More importantly, I accept perfectly Evolutionary theory within the context of the theological framework of Evolutionary Creationism
8. I would hold a civil conversation with someone who wasn't Christian, or was gay or what-not

Except their isn't. Stop getting your knickers in a twist, and WBC just trolled OP hard. Ignore them like anything else that offends you, and stop being so sensitive. They're cretins, but they're also protected by something called the "First Amendment", which makes their speech legitimised.

I would love to support them, as I think that with their actions they make an important point about the way free speech works. It's a dangerous concept, yet America embodies it like pretty much no other country in the world. It's only natural that opponents of such things stand up - Maybe not quite as drastically as the WBC, but they do make a very valid point.

Where to draw the line? They offer, in themselves, the best example for this omnipresent question when discussing civil liberties. Many people are just trying to get their head out of being controlled by a greater force, and attempt to accomplish that by supporting an increase in civil liberties. While this in itself is not a particularly bad thing, it's very egocentric and stubborn, and encourages abuse of those rights -the possibility of which the WBC is dedicated to point out.

Just a thing to consider before you hate on them.

I've got news for you. Don't take something that was written two millennia ago about some dude that was born without a (human) father too literally. You don't believe the bible, you believe in it's teachings. Or not, depending on your faith/absence thereof.

They came to my home-town once to picket gay marriage, 'some people' tossed rotten garbage and a bunch of water-balloons at them; mind you it was cold. Police did not catch the assailant...I respect their right to free speech, and did not toss things at them because I wanted to suppress that right; I did it because I found what they were saying insulting.
