Do you believe in the death penalty?

Postby South East Europe » Fri Jun 05, 2009 10:27 am

Do you believe in the death penalty, yes or no? and what crimes should the death penalty be proscribed for? On the extreme right, homosexuality and abortion are crimes that deserve the death penalty. On the extreme left, not even murder or rape deserve the death penalty. Now, I personally say yes but only in extreme circumstances. I will tell you why, people should only be executed only if it has to be done. What are your opinions or sentiments?

I absolutely believe that there are crimes for which the punishment should be death.

I also believe that there's not a government on Earth that I would trust with that kind of power. :P

On second glance how are the two bottom poll options different? Aren't they pretty much the same thing?

A man or woman who killed 20 people should given the death penalty. A mass rapist should be given the death penalty.

It is a just punishment. We need to deter criminals, not rehabilitate them.

In before 15 people posting statistics that show the death penalty is not a deterrent.

Why 20? So if you kill 19 you're safe?

I think the death penalty is a more merciful alternative to life without parole. That being the case, I'd rather let ten guilty men go free than execute one innocent man.

WAaaaagh it's a hard choice. It would have to be only used for extra heinous crimes, and even then if they were 100% proveable. Which eh not many crimes are. So I suppose 'no'.

nope

not so much because i feel bad for the poor killer who now has to pay for his horrible crime but because no one should have the job of executioner; no one should have to work to get someone killed; no one should have to spend years of their lives worrying that they are doing enough to get the killer of their loved one executed.
whatever

I agree, for the 10 guilty men who were acquitted there are 100 who were never charged.

Why kill people when they make perfectly good work-slaves?

And besides, when you kill a person it doesn't give them the chance to later prove their innocence when further evidence is found or analyzed.

And the phrase "kill them all, God will sort them out" does not work here because some, if not most, people are atheists. :p

Well, credible sources tell me that it is still applied in a number of nations, including Japan and the USA. I do not think that the media there will jjointly fall for a hoax of that proportion. So yes, I believe in it. On second thought, I think I misunderstood the question. :D

Seriously: The death penalty should not exist. There always can be a chance that a convict is later proven innocent.

I think we should institute the death penalty for every single crime. Like, say, downloading a song from the Internet illegally, or stealing a raisin, or talking too loudly on your cell phone. Moreover, the death penalty should be dealt by crack squads of government forces roaming the streets shooting everyone who commits a crime without bothering to tell the criminal what they'd done wrong.

It would serve as a deterrent to encourage people to obey the law, or maybe just to leave the country. Either way, crime will decrease.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
