Absolutely. I simply say, as pleasantly as I can, that I'm not interested and firmly close the door. There's no requirement that I listen to their schpiel. And as Serrland says, this way neither of us wastes the other's time.

Personally I'd wait for their acceptance of me saying that I'm not interested if I were being polite. Closing the door in their face is a little rude

Why? I don't slam the door. I say, "Thanks, not interested," wait a second or so and then just close the door. Seriously, if they've been at this for any length of time, they have to be used to that response. If they take it personally they shouldn't be out proselytizing.

Obviously political canvassing is different from religious proselytizing, but I go door to door fairly frequently in election seasons, and this is the second-best response I could get. If you're not going to be receptive, and if otherwise I would spend several minutes discussing something while you stare at me blankly only to throw out anything I may give you, etc, I really have no problem with you closing the door on me. Don't be a prick about it, but go ahead and say you're not interested and close the door.I have no desire to speak to someone who doesn't want me there any more than they desire to hear me speaking when they don't want me there.

You're right about taking it personally. The people don't know me as an individual, and there should be no expectation to be treated as such. When you're canvassing you're just a nameless face. Doesn't mean you should be treated with any less respect, but it also doesn't mean people have to be chummy.

Jehova's witnesses appear more prevalent in the North East. In the South and west the Mormons seem more prevalent. Kinda miss the Mormons they have a better sense of humor. Such as when I ask if they would like a cup of coffee.

just say, "I'm sorry but im in a rush, but can you hand me a leaflet and I'll read through it later." then next time they come knocking hand them the leaflet and say "are you interested in becoming a JW?" before they can get out any words.

Edit: the last time they tried it took me two seconds to identify them and then the door hit the frame, simple as that.

My mate had some JW. They told him that IVF babies weren't real babies and only naturally concieved babies were. Then he told 'em by that logic Jesus wasn't a real baby. Then they walked off...

I laugh every time I remember that.

Over here in my home country, JW is a banned religion. And those that remain adamant in their faith, they usually spend their 2 years of NS in db for refusing to serve lol.

We got JWs once. My mother and I drove up the driveway and saw them standing there. I got out and headed towards the house, being a little kid, and my mom grabbed me and said loudly, 'looks like they're not home!'. Then she dragged me back into the car and drove off. We went and got ice cream.
